I agree wholeheartedly.....
The hospital job is the Cadillac of MT jobs anymore.  If you're lucky enough to live in a larger metro area that pays better than rural, the hospital job is the last good job situation that you can find.  I'm homebased and local to my hospital job, regular employee, benefits up the wazoo, hourly pay PLUS incentive, all equipment supplied for free including my cable internet bill.  I left the national scene 3 yrs ago and God willing my hospital never decides to go with a national service, I will be there forever.  I'm making 35,000 working less than 40 hours a week.  I'm in heaven.
I agree wholeheartedly with you...
... my hospital forbids its transcription service to send its work overseas, and the company must sign a document every year with regards to that promise. HOWEVER, catching them if they are doing it surruptitiously is another matter. But like you say, it's a huge trainwreck going somewhere to happen. I think it's important to educate the PATIENT that there is always the possibility their confidential records could be leaving the country. For some that could pose all sorts of problems. I for one try to remind my own doc, nurses, etc., that my info. had BETTER NOT get offshored, because if I find out about it, I will sue. And I think all patients should make that point perfectly clear with their healthcare providers. Like you say, sooner or later something really NASTY is going to happen to someone's medical records, and for the institution that was negligent enough to allow those records to end up offshore, there will most likely be hell to pay.
Agree wholeheartedly with you.....sm

Oh. but I DO know how GREAT it is to not live with this type of personality any longer (married 13 years, divorced him and now 15 years without him and I am SUPER HAPPY).  Unfortunately, there are also passive-aggressive women out there in the world, equally as oppressive as the men who have this diagnosis.

By the way, my ex was never *formally diagnosed* - I diagnosed him myself.....and today I feel bad for his  wife of nearly 5 years; however, I never deal with them, have never met her....I simply feel sorry for her from afar....because horses NEVER change colors.

So, yes, I not only lost the oaf, but a mere 5 years after the divorce, I dropped 50 pounds and KEPT IT OFF!!!  *talk about big weights being lifted*

Best of luck to ALL who are going through life dealing with a passive-aggressive personality on ANY level.

I agree wholeheartedly. sm
Unfortunately, they are the only ones that provide any sort of credentialing for this field, as sad as that is.
I agree wholeheartedly...sm
I recently had a neighbor move in with two small kids. It was a father with these obnoxious little hellions. He asked me on three different occasions if I would watch his kids while he was at work because *you're home all day*. I told him no three different times, trying to explain that I work from home and that I did not have time. He even told me he had to go on nights soon and would it be okay if I could run over to his house two or three times during the night to check on his kids, or perhaps spend the night. and I am supposed to do MY work, when??? not to mention getting any sleep of my own due to running over to his house? Again, I said no. I could not do that. Then suddenly he would start showing up at my door mid afternoon or so and say he had to go pick up one son from school..the other was sleeping on the couch and could I just run over every 15 minutes or so to check on the sleeping one? I did it once, because he put me on the spot. the second time I told him flat out no! They just don't GET IT!!!
Nothing to add except I agree wholeheartedly.

Ditto. Agree with you wholeheartedly.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. There is no excuse.
I have learned to live by the basic rule of treating people as I would want to be treated. I'm sorry for your experience.
BEST POST ON THIS TOPIC. I agree wholeheartedly. nm

Wholeheartedly agree!!! this business screams UNION
How many people have the sheer determination and guts to carry it through?
Agree wholeheartedly - have to learn to be responsible someday - hopefully already know

I second that wholeheartedly!
Couldn't agree more, I just watched it all again this morning. Loving it!
I wholeheartedly disagree

First, if someone does not like her acting style or anything else about her, they are certainly entitled to their opinion.  I think through chance or intent I have seen  every thing released to date that she has done - Hackers, Girl Interrupted, Gia, Beyond Borders to name a few.   She steps up to every different role and continues to grow.     She is 30 years old and has been speaking more intelligently in interviews for years than a lot of 40 and 50 year old actors and actresses.  She is putting herself out there and putting herself in harm's way as does anyone who puts their face, famous or otherwise, on a cause.

Many of the humanitarian roles she has assumed now are ones she has been asked to do.   Since practically birth, and particularly since her teen years, everything she has done has been under a microscope.    Now, everything she does is under a different kind of microscope and I think she is doing an admirable job of walking the line.  No question she has a wild spirit -  didn't most of us have some wild at 20 and 30?  She is now formally representing the US and I cannot begin to imagine how stressful it must be to have to say the right thing to everyone every time and still try to achieve the objective.  She has looks, brains, money and could be doing anything including sitting around whining about any number of trivial pursuits.    Is she an actress who wants to be a philanthropist, or a humanitarian at heart who wants to act?  I don't know, but I for one enjoy the entertainment and only wish I had all her gifts so that I could go out and make that kind of a difference.   For the record, in my mind there are no similarities between Princess Diana and Angelina, other than perhaps the eye of the world being on them at any given time.  Diana's circumstances were forced and tragic and I believe her unbelievable heart and empathy were borne mostly of her pain.  She did not strive professionally to be an actress.   As a member of the royal family, she was both expected and required to be involved in some charitable works or humanitarian efforts.  What she became is a reflection of her true heart, I think, and I admire her very much in that regard.   If a single child does not die of thirst and hunger on a floor of dirt because of Angelina Jolie or Princess Diana, I think the world is already a better place.

I wholeheartedly disagree with you...

I do work as an IC for an online company that does not require a line quota and does not dictate my hours.  They only require that the work I take is back with 24 hours.  So, I think you've made a blanketed statement here.  I certainly do believe that MTSOs do abuse IC status in more ways than one.  I have a whole lot of experience in this field, and I can tell you that it is abuse.

I wholeheartedly disagree. sm
If every company followed the BOS, then we would have standardized medical records. I've gotten copies of my records from various hospitals and clinics from around the country (I've moved a few times in my life) and most were a joke.
I concur wholeheartedly
with you, dnh. I also work for a great company at 8 cpl. We are required to commit to a certain amount of lines per day and our dictators are average to great. I work very hard to send in as few blanks as possible to QA and proofreading is a must, as far as I am concerned. I see so many disgruntled and dissatisfied MTs on this board. I wonder why they bother to continue in this profession if they are so miserable. All jobs come with pros and cons and you make the best of it or move on. In some cases, they may beg you stay. ;-)
I wholeheartedly disagree, I'm afraid....
AVG and many of the other free antivirus programs (I use Avira ... there's also Avast! and a number of others) do a fine job at protecting one's computer, usually as good -- if not better -- than the performance one gets from Norton or McAfee.

Actually, I usually recommend AGAINST using either McAfee or Norton, as they're system resource hogs, quite bloated, and generally slow down the user's system.

YMMV.
She's a mess and always has been.
I never understood the attraction to this dumpster-diving looking woman.
WOW! Now that is a mess! sm

It is odd that she wants to tell you what to do with clothing that she "gives" to you.  That is horrible!  In my opinion you did the right thing about telling her that you don't have anymore room in your clothes.  She does know why you are not accepting the clothes anymore.  If that does not make her change her tune then nothing will.  So, I think it is best, even though you two are missing out on a good thing, to have nipped this thing like you did.  You may be losing out now but if it would have kept on and perhaps all of you been at the same place at the same time with your friend wearing "your gifts" then it could have turned out to be sour.  Now the only thing sour is your "friend" that has an abundance of clothes right now.

BTW - what kind of a friend does that to another friend?  Hopefully, no friend of mine...

You are probably going to be really in a mess
if you ever have to explain to the IRS about fees for your animals. How about my 22 pounds cat- can he be my guard cat? If you can charge for guard, then you should be able to take off monthly fees for security monitoring. Hehe
the mess
Janet's right. SR/VR just totally mangles a lot of reports. What sounds perfectly clear and concise to me will be total nonsense in the SR/VR draft version of a report. You need to remove or add punctuation and also capitalization of words on almost every line, sometimes multiple times per line. You have to fix anything that needs to be put into a numbered format. You need to correct headings - add them or delete them. Entire sentences or paragraphs could be missing that the dictator clearly spoke -- I heard it, why did the speech engine miss it? I'm not talking about mushmouth dictators or ESL's. You could have very good dictators that the draft report is just a mess. It is time consuming and frustrating. There are some reports that would be quicker to just type from scratch, but not for 3-1/2 or 4 cents a line!
N'Awlins Mess
Well, between opening all the jail doors, and locking in all the poor "projects" seciton inhabitants, the mayor's pretty much taken a pass on re-election.  This goes beyond partisanship well into the range of sheer, corrupt, beaurocratic incompetance.   But the national-level response has been pretty pathetic, as well.  "oooh, we didn't know it would be this bad!"  Well, drive in, look around and use the radios the army gave you, General!   Sheesh.
Clutter - mess
I have five accounts that I receive schedule print outs from that I check off the names and it seems that they pile up weekly.  I cannot find the time to put them into their designated files.   I also have mail, other things all over my desk.   I usually take Saturday morning with a cup or two of coffee and straighten it out and SWEAR that I will keep it that way but the once again by Friday I am in almost the same shamables.  I thought it was only me.  I can find everything, do not lose papers or tapes -- usually -- and for a supposedly paperless profession I sure do generate a lot of paper.   But glad that I am not alone.  Now where is that schedule???
I'm an IC & I can tell you I'd get out of the biz before I'd work for such low pay. No Mess

quick fix when you mess up ? sm
Highlight your upper case text, then hold down the shift key, and press the F3 key. Everything should revert to lower case.
Except that what actually STARTED all this mess - sm
with overseas undercutting was ANY hospital or MTSO doing American business with cheap offshore workers. I know that our cars, clothing, and even our (poison-laced) pet food comes from overseas, and that's bad enough, but this is worse. This is American healthcare, and American ID's and information, and there should be laws against ANY of it going offshore. If Indian workers want to do American MT work, the only way they should be able to do is is by actually living here, and having to pay American prices for their food, rent, and yes - health care.

I could go on and on about all the greed in American companies these days, and not just MT. These guys don't seem to get that you can make tons of money (and maybe even MORE money, in the long run) by being honest and ethical, rather than by being greedy and unscrupulous.
If you don't want to mess around with paying
quarterly, have more withheld from your husband's check as you file jointly. With that and your deductions you should be okay.
Thanks for all the responses! - no mess.
:)
My husband doesn't see any mess that is his...

as long as it's his 5 pairs of shoes by the door, his clothing draped over the chair in the dining room and his misc. "stuff" piled on the dining room table (yes, the dining area is also by the front door) then it's invisible to him.  NOW, if it's mine or the kids' stuff anywhere - the house is a "disaster."  I intentionally leave all his stuff wherever he leaves it so that I can point it out to him whenever he starts to complain about the kids' toys in the living room...

This was a major national. You can mess with just about anything...
as long as you have a space bar.
Ditto what Wally said. Don't mess with it.

Young people can have heart problems.

I've been in a panic lately because my left-sided chest has been hurting off and on.  I've had two abnormal EKGs in the past.  I went to the doctor two weeks ago and he blew me off.  I'm in my early 30s, too.  I have high school friends who have had heart attacks and coronary artery grafting or died.  Oh, the doctor just treated me like a hypochondriac again.  I've got kidney problems, too, but they won't even do a urinalysis.  Evidently, none of my symptoms are serious enough to warrant workup or treatment.  Never mind the fact that diagnosed "reflux" was actually a hiatal hernia and diagnosed "constipation" was actually large kidney stones blocking my ureter.

Long story short.  LISTEN TO YOUR BODY.  FOLLOW YOUR INSTINCTS.  Get thee to a doctor and be persistent, for you, for hubby, for your kids and for your peace of mind.

I was impressed with this. My computer was a mess. nm

We should get paid more just to listen to this mess
You know, the people cut our pay and put us on things that we have to be mind readers most of the time to muddle through. I am doing VR and regular work but I cannot believe how dictators are changing their dictation time after time- on the same sentence. It is a wonder that anything comes out halfway right. Half of the knowledge about this job comes with knowing (or thinking you know) how to change these fricking sentences they dish out to us. On a day like this retirement looks better and better.
of course...you may not get it but you deserve it (small mess)
You mention annual and cost of living raises, what about incentive raises. Anything not in your job description should constitute some type of compensation.

If no money, at least get this on your resume and added to your personnel file, yes?

go for it because if they say no you know where you stand. knowing where you stand can be important. if you do not ask you will never know and you may start feeling resentful.

just my opinion...

they certainly would not let you go or anything, right? perhaps you could ask for a review with your manager (something in writing) and then go for it ?
Yeah, sometimes I catch mess-ups...sm
when I go back through the report, and I say I am glad I proofread. LOL.
Have you seen photos of the tangled mess of
What an incredible MESS. To think that valuable, often sensitive personal information travels through that knotted mess made me nervous even BEFORE the attacks in Mumbai. And now the risk those records face there makes me nauseous. It's a huge U.S. security and/or identity-theft breach just waiting to happen.
RIPOFFS - How many others got taken by this person. PLEASE POST HERE. no mess.

Finally, a thought that explains the mess down there!
That would make sense, those that worked, had familes, had ties all fled when possible. Those few for whatever reasons did not make it out appened to get "stuck" with the lowerclass and those released from jails, which finally explains why in the world anyone whould shot at cops and enlisted servicemen/women trying to come in and help!

Good grief that has been driving me NUTS! As it IS an unAmerican response, unhuman response to distaster. Hecks, we had a string of house fires, and people who battle it out everyday in our area were bound together....we do living in a working class are where most families have two working parents...but still a shame to think that is the cause of this extreme maddness, but at least a better thought then they all just went mad suddenly!!
You have GOT to be talking about Transcend. What a MESS in that regard!
I threw in the towel after a few months, and regret that I waited that long. What a waste of my precious time! It was such a giant step for me back in time having to shuffle thru reams of paper, and most of which make no sense at all - no rhyme or reason to 50 pages of random rules, each and every silly report that pops into my computer. Uggghhh. It NEVER got better - actually worse when changes came in nearly daily and the whole mess was jumbled around again, with my highlighting and hints obsolete! I heard other parts of Transcend under different supervisors went smoothly, but the different accounts I tried were all the pits!! Forget about transcribing! Had to go thru hurdles to get there!
Gracious, that is one heckuva recipe. Too much for me to mess with
k
Don't mess with my line counts to get that $.01 savings !!!! n/m

Why is spellcheck acting up on me? Did I mess up the settings?
If you have any ideas why it is now checking headers/footers when it did not do that before, please advise. It is driving me crazy.
I transcribe a Chinese doc who stutters. It's a mess. nm,

actual typing time mess

I know exactly what you mean. We see it in E-mails all the time where I work. Although they aren't enforcing it, they do ask that we work our full shift AND get our lines in. I know Dictaphone Extext tracks your typing time and you can see that when you check your line count. It gets really depressing on the speech editing because actual typing time is a LOT less, so it takes longer to get my time in.

This is another way to get more out of the MTs. I think it's all crap, especially since if you were to go over 40 hours a week you won't get paid!

I would never anybody let mess around with my face. No matter how good
the doctor is, sooner or later you can see the 'plastic.'

And then you look worse than before and have to have a 'followup.'

Never, never......and I really mean 'never', except I am in a terrible accident, disgfiguring my face.

Don't be afraid of it. It's really hard to mess up Oriental cooking.

Here are the links to the recipes that I printed off of Google.  (I love the Internet!  No more cookbooks, only Google for recipes.)  I cheated on the plum sauce by buying a jar because our plums aren't quite ripe yet.  Buy the egg roll skins instead of trying to make your own, too.

http://www.cooksrecipes.com/sauce/homemade-plum-sauce.html

For the fried rice, you can use any type of rice.  I use brown basmati or jasmine rice mostly.  You can also throw in extra vegetables and leftover meats (pork, beef, chicken) to make a meal out of it instead of a side dish.  I like those Oriental pea pods, bok choy, water chestnuts, baby corn, and Chinese cabbage.

http://japanesefood.about.com/od/friedrice/r/friedrice.htm

I'm going to combine and modify the eggroll recipes so I have shrimp/pork egg rolls.  I use canola oil instead of vegetable, peanut, or sesame oil.  I don't care for sesame seeds or bamboo sprouts, so I add extra water chestnuts.  Use frozen or fresh instead of canned crab or shrimp.  Use diced, boneless pork chops instead of ground pork or sausage.
