there are lots of good MTs like you.sm
but they are NOT the ones that are always applying to companies...they are not the ones that leave a client in the lurch or fit the description.

I have had a lot of really good ladies working for me for a LONG LONG time now and would do anything to keep them because a good Transcriptionist is so hard to find.

But there are those that give MTs a bad reputation just like in all professions.

Good MTs do not sit on these boards blasting people asking legit questions. Good MTs are the ones always answering the word boards, equipment boards, etc with kind and thoughtful answers. There are many of those...just wish I could find one or two more
Lots of good info Ace...Thanks. NM

It is a very good thing for lots of the MTS
to not have lived, say in the 50s on through the early 90s because they would have been out of luck with jobs and the ability to stay home. Those 2 just did not go together. I remember the last job where I worked in house fulltime (92) they told you not to have family/friends on the hospital property to visit- not allowed on the work place at all. I love working from home but I think the choice of this job should not be #1 you want to stay at home because then like I have said before the profession comes off as nonprofessional. I do not care how MTs look but others apparently do as they post these concerns all the time- iether neighbors and/or family thinking they do not really have a job, even a post on a board stating her husband telling her all she did was sit on her a___ all day long, not being taken seriously. I think a lot of MTers hurt their own self when they post their reason for doing this was just to work from home. Just what I read on these boards.
It's a good way to get lots of hits on your post!

Yoga is excellent. Lots of good tapes.

We are the largest consumer of goods. nm.
With all of the outsourcing, a lot of products are being made outside of the U.S. All countries are helping in the problems with our environment.
YES! Love it! Largest national. Been there 6 yrs.
!!
The largest service in the country does
Of course client preference first, but AAMT second, which covers everything else ;)
the largest service in the country does not --sm
constitute even half of all the other services that are out there that do not hold with bos. and bos does not cover everything else. boy are you brainwashed.
The largest MT company in the world. NM
Goldbird
The 2 largest nationals both list it in
Have worked for both and clients know exactly what is going on. MOST clients even ask for it because it's cheaper.

THEY KNOW.

Largest city in the state ...
and no jobs to be seen with unemployment double digits. Working outside of the home wasn't the issue, the point of the thread was overhiring by companies and not being able to make a living while tied to the company's minimum requirments. When there are so many MTs around the world and in the US, companies can overhire to keep their TATs low and keep us earning zip.
BBQ, slaw, cornbread, ham, casseroles, lots of veggies, chicken pastry, lots of desserts!! BIG fami

Thanks. I thought so. This is the largest hospital in our state
I am being ripped off.  Thanks for the reply!
It is all about the bottom line. One of the largest transcription sm
companies is Cbay and they are pricing everyone else out.

I have spoken to several doctors and many other people about this issue and no one, and I mean no one, gives a hoot who types the report up.

This is about dollars and cents and it is not going away.
Lots of inexpensive decorations at Big Lots. Had a party last year.

Sprint advertises they have the largest coverage area. They should have

a map on their website showing coverage area.  I haven't used a broadband card yet.   I know someone who used a Verizon air card and they said they were able to get service everywhere they went.  They were on the west coast, where it seems more reasonable that there would be a wider range of service.   You can check Verizon's website for coverage area too.  Another option may be for you to get dial-up at your mother's house.   You can get People PC for $10.95/month, but I don't know if they require a contract.   If none of the big ISPs have a local number you can get service through a small local provider and they usually do not require a contract.  I have traveled extensively and have spent several weeks in some places where dial-up was the only available option at the time and even though I had an ISP they did not have local service.

Another option is to try the free trials with various ISPs if they have service in your mom's area.   There is no charge is you cancel before trial period is up.

In this economy? I don't think 5 cpl for ANYTHING
Especially when they state they want someone who has experience, and is good at what they do. And more than that, such as 9-10 cpl, is an insult for straight medical transcription. MT isn't a 'career', it's a US sweatshop run by Indians.
economy
I think the biggest part of it is the economy right now. People are out of jobs, out of insurance, or worried about their jobs and trying not to spend any money, even on health care (dentists seem to be getting the worst of it). Unfortunately, aside from perpetuating the bad cycle of no spending = low business profits = job cuts, in medical terms it is especially bad that people are delaying things that they really need to avoid future problems/expenses, such as colonoscopies, screenings, etc. From everything I have seen so far, this is happening across the board with transcription volumes down. It's normal that we are in a slow period right now just after the holidays, but it seems there are a lot of people on these boards having a hard time finding a new MT job, even with a good resume. I don't think that is going to change until the economy rebounds. There are other challenges for the industry from India, EMR, SR, etc., but I think the economy is affecting our volumes in the immediate present more than anything right now.
Does it have a lot to do with the economy
Do you think it has to do with the economy or is this the way it has been for a while? I see posts from last year where people were being placed pretty easily and quickly.
I thought that maybe in a year things would look a little better. Hopefully anyway...
LOTS and LOTS of video tapes and DVDs.

already signs its bad for the economy
As consumers, we are cutting back, because the price of everything is going up and wages going down.  Its completely out of balance.  Since Bush has been in office, consumers have had to increase their spending because of higher prices in the last year by about 200 billion.  Three years ago, consumers were spending 100 billion, now we are spending 500 billion.  People have just started to cut back, thats why movie theatres are advertising more to get people back in there, not as many kids are eating out, especially with the gas prices skyrocketing.  We've got a complete moron in the office.
THIS economy is doing well, unemployment at 4.9%. Where do you get
x
I think it is the economy. People don't have the
money to buy insurance, or are contractors because their company won't provide insurance, and they cannot afford to have the surgeries they used to. Unless it is a true emergency I bet the hospital rolls are way down. The economy is just very bad right now, and most folks can't even put a doc visit on a credit card, because the credit cards are maxed out. BTW: Even McDonald's recently closed at a mall close to me. Even they are feeling the economic crunch. Yikes!
I think most in this economy would not have a problem
accepting an inhouse deal, some yearn for the chance to have a so called steady income, steady work. The pay seems good. You just said you ran out of work for a few days. You have to ask yourself would you rather sit around in PJs, no money perhaps or inhouse with money. Simple.
I have IE set to display text size as largest, yet this font is so tiny I can barely see it.

AND if another country's economy fails
it will greatly affect us.
In this economy I would not dare - they may look elsewhere, be careful!
.
This economy is so bad, and the past overhiring
have made MTSOs scared, I believe. I sent out a zillion resumes a day and finally ended up with 1 full-time and 1 prn just in case the FT runs out of work. It took a year while I worked at a bad place and went broke. But you have got to keep trying, please keep up the faith. Statistically the more you send out the better chance of getting a response. Did not help when Medquist's thousands of MTs left at once too, so the market is flooded right now. Good luck to you.
Yeah, the whole world economy is going to be derailed because

Do you realize that the Bush tax cut saved this economy after 9/11?
Everybody got a tax cut.  Now you can't cut taxes to those who don't pay any, can you?  That would be socialism.  BTW, do you realize that the unemployment rate in those countries with cradle to grave entitlements runs more than 10%, as compared to our 4.9%.  France for example.  I know it seems like a simple solution that the taxes from the high wage earners should be taken away and given to those who don't earn anything, but in economic terms, that can destroy an economy and therefore hurt the low wager earners even more.  Case in point, the Clinton luxury tax back in the 90s.  He put a huge tax on boats and jewlery and had to remove it because of the trickle down damage that did to all the jobs those luxury items created.
Make sure you don't have it in express or economy mode.
Is it faint all over consistently or is it uneven? If it's consistently faint, go to your Start Menu, Control Panel, Printers and Faxes, right click on Dell Printer 720, Properties, General, Printing Preferences, and make sure Quality/Speed isn't set on Quick Print. If that doesn't fix it, post again and we'll try something else. You may have to put in a new cartridge.
They encourage outsourcing, global economy.

economy doing well? did you ever consider unemployment is lower because after people lose their job
or temporary jobs. well, obviously unem. would look low. what town do you live in? we have major closings of businesses almost on a monthly basis.

we have stores closing all over the place. even 3 burger kings. gas is over $3.00, from $2.00, and is intended to stay that way.

I know of hardly anyone personally who is working full-time with any good benefits to speak of.

of course unem. would look like it is going down. 2000 people lose their jobs, 500 people find lower-paying, service jobs, and then unem. is down?

just look around, if you think the economy is so great. we are suffering in our area. we now face heating fuel prices going up may 100%, which is just went up about 50% last year, for some excuse or another.

americans are being extorted, and it is by our own rich in this country, who are what, the top 3%?

ever wonder where ALL that tons of money goes that is saved by closing shops, getting rid of full-time employees and all the benefits.

DOES THE SAVINGS GET PASSED-ON TO US, THE LITTLE GUY? No, we are actually pay MORE for everythiing. do you grocery shop? ever notice prices going up almost monthly, if not some weekly? salad dressing, 99 cents a few years ago, now over $2, and going up to $3?

how is that good for the economy again?
Considering all that you mentioned, the fact that the economy is growing is amazing. But,

Dignity, get real. It's a changing economy. Get with the program.

Dear, I'm wondering if the economy has effected your paycheck...
something tells me it hasn't.
What on earth does that mean??

But why on earth would QA want
an exclamation point in a letter or report? They just aren't used in medical reports or letters, and here the OP is saying they want one in every letter? Is this a foreign-owned company, maybe on the planet Pluto?
What on earth?
Why should she give it a rest?? If you see a post with Toth in the subject line, just don't read it. It's not like there's not room on the website for another post.

There are a thousand reasons why someone could have gotten sucked into a terrible situation. It doesn't mean they were obtuse or saw red flags & ignored them or behaved in some way irresponsibly, & it's rude to suggest otherwise.

I can't understand what you think you are going to get out of censuring and/or censoring her.
What on earth is the 100 number

an no one ever answers?

WHAT on earth are you talking about?
How did you get any of that from my post?  Haven't you ever seen the jokes on TV about the hairy women from Russia or Germany?  Or that French women don't shave their pits?  Don't have TV or anything under that rock of yours?  How does a jokingly exaggerated TV-induced generalization make me nonCaucasian?  Or are you the racist here?  You certainly were quick to blurt out muhbaby daddy there.  WE were joking around. YOU need to take a nap.
eww, why on earth would you want to date.
And chances are you will find the person boring, annoying or unappealing.  I don't see why people date on those sites, its so set up.  Its better to meet by chance, more natural and less pressure.  I'm in my early 30s and I see my friends either divorced or miserable in their marriages, same with my family.  It gets old real fast, why not have something to look forward to, and use this time to figure out who you are, your passions, and the right person will be drawn to you to complement you, rather than being forced together because you feel like you should be in a couple.  At this point I have my own life and forcing a relationship into it would make me irritable and obligated...BUT if in the process of living my life I happen upon someone who fits in there without me knowing it...meaning I can stand him there...well that would be a big bonus.  No need for it, or want..been there done that...i'm old enough to know I want it on certain terms.  In the meantime, i'll just hug my dog and cat way too much.
HELLO, EARTH TO AAMT nm
anyone?
Why on earth do I need to "calm down"? sm
If you don't agree with my opinion, advice, or life experiences... that's OK. And I don't have to agree with yours. The OP is free to read all of the responses and take away from it whatever she can. She can take everyone's advice, or she can not take any of the advice... that's her choice. I was simply offering her advice based on what my experience have been. And let's be brutally honest here... she's going to continue to get beaten, and her children be beaten, regardless of whether she instigates it or not. Tigers don't change their stripes.

But since you want her to just leave the next time it happens, what do you advise her to do for food and shelter for her and her children? She needs to make a plan, and stick to it, with the least possible upheaval for her kids' sake. If she wants to plan for it, and then just leave the next time it happens, that may work too. I'm certainly not going to knock that advice. But, please, don't just shoot down other people's experiences and advice. If you have some real advice or a real plan to share with her, feel free. But don't just offer the pat answer of "you need to leave"... it's obvious she knows that.
How on earth do you KNOW FOR A FACT
Give me a break, are you that paranoid?
