If you need an Expander too, you can get Instant Text, which has counting, invoicing, and reporting built in. :-)

I just tried Sylcount and

I count by gross line and compared to MP Count, Sylcount counted a lot less lines for me! I could see where you could get a higher line count if you are counting by characters though since it offers the option of so many other keys you can include that are not technically characters but are actual keystrokes.

Just thought I would let you know what I found when I compared the two by  counting by gross lines. :)

I like Sylcount.
.
sylcount
I downloaded Sylcount (30-day trial) and followed the instructions perfectly.  The first time I used it, it went fine.  Now when i use it, i get "Could not attach or start WinWord.Files cannot be counted & reported"  What did i do wrong??
Sylcount

If I remember correctly,  it has been a while since I used it, Sylcount stores by the file name after you count them, and keeps it or is easily recounted again.   I always name the document by date and then doctor initials, i.e. 6-6-07.jlc; 6-6-07.rbf, etc.  Then when I counted by Sylcount I would count all of those files with the doctor's extension and it would give me a list and a total.  It does not produce an invoice but if I remember correctly it does give you a list from which you can easily transfer or type into an Invoice, i.e. Quick Books, and also attach the list printed so they can see the daily totals.   Right now I just use a spread sheet, foro my 7 docs, do my daily counts, keep them listed and produce an invoice and attach a copy of the spread sheet for each doctor.  Again, all my files are easily accessible and countable since I can search from the extension of their initials.

Someone one else might have a better system I am sure.   Patti

Sylcount - great
I do not know about the other two but I like Sylcount because it can be set to count extra character for caps, bolds, underlines, etc.
I tried the sylcount download too and
I did not care for them. I went with Spellex. Good program. Don't have to save files to any rtf. format, just doc. works good. They have a free trial too.
I just use Sylcount. You don't say what "reasonable" is but this is $99 and SM
has paid for itself with its invoice program.
I used Sylcount before too and it was great nm

I used to swear by Sylcount but recently
to Practicount. You get the same counts as you do in Sylcount but you don't have to save the files in the rich text format for it to work. I found it annoying to have to save everything in RTF and my version of MS Word would always ask if I wanted to save it in RTF, and I'd have to answer "yes" to two different pop-ups before it would even save. There might have been a way around that, but I found Practicount worked just as well without that bother so I switched.
Maybe that's it. Mine is SylCount Gold and relatively new.
nm
I use the invoicing report that Sylcount produces.
.
Sylcount IV lines only. You can trial for 30 days.

Hmm, I use gross lines and Sylcount is always higher
I've compared Sylcount with several different line counting programs and Sylcount was always higher, even if it was only by 10 lines. I did find that PractiCount is the same as Sylcount and I ended up switching to that since you don't have to convert files to rich text format, but other than that, I always found Sylcount to be the best.
Might be a newer version. I used Sylcount a while back
I switched to PractiCount myself because it gives a line count similar to that of Sylcount but you don't have to save the files in any special format. When I had Sylcount, though, I definitely had to save them in .rtf format or it would tell me it was not a Sylvan .rtf file and that I had to resave document in that format to count it. I remember because anytime you reopened a file, you also had to save it all over again under .rtf format because it would default to something else. Real PITA!
Sylcount is good. It gave me a higher count
xx
I use a line counter system similar to sylcount--sm
It has an invoice feature within it. I save my daily files by patient name and whether CN, H&P, etc. If I had to run an invoice like that each month, it would be much easier to have your files by each doctor and then run the invoice feature on the line counter. It would count each patient during that month by name and list it on the invoice that way, as well as including the line count and the cost. It would be much easier than doing it by hand. Good luck to you.
I don't think it can do that, it you are meaning
HE to He, etc.
I know the meaning is not
derogatory, any more than my grandmother was being derogatory when she said "colored people."  Certainly, all the countries you mention (Middle East, etc) can  be considered oriental, since the word just means of the east. ("We Three kings from Orient Are.")  But I have never heard anyone use the term "Oriental" to describe someone from Turkey, or Saudi Arabia, or any Caucasian person in the eastern hemisphere; only to people from the Far East (many Americans tend to muddle people from these countries into a group because of their similar physical characteristics).   At any rate, Asian is  the favored term today.   Oriental things (such as rugs) are a different story.   My cousin (age 54) still uses the word "Oriental" for people from the Far East...  she also gets Arabs and Indians mixed up.       oriental/occidental
Sorry y'all are going through this

I'm still a student, but have been in the workplace for years and years.  It's painful going through re-orgs, etc (the business I was in, we had re-orgs every 2-3 years, and layoffs every 18 MO - 2 years).  I hope you all are able to make the right decision for yourselves and your families.

Good luck to you all!!!

(NOTE:  Please don't infiltrate the MT market, us newbies will need jobs too )

thanks y'all

I appreciate your input, really, really.  I will take this under advisement and look for those books.

Another thing is, he seems really insecure, and rightly so, I guess, with all that's happened.  He seems like he can't do anything without looking at me first.  Do you know what I mean?  I mean, when someone asks him a question, he looks at me before saying anything.  As for playing and such, he's pretty independent, but it seems he lacks problem solving skills and lacks social skills.  That makes me really nervous because along with the PTSD the ex so kindly gave me, he also made me socially phobic because I depend so much on what other people think of me, and I DON'T want my child growing up like that!  Any suggestions on how to make him more of his own person?  I really worry that he is so dependent on others that it will make him an easy target, and he'll just conform to what anybody says and who knows what that will entail!

Wow, its sad y'all don't have anything better to do
This board gets worse all the time, sigh.
where y'all going?..nm
Please tell so that we can daydream.
ps CTA meaning to cover their a**.

I said he is the same on the inside, meaning,
he still is the most tender-hearted man I have ever known in my life, the same as 28 years ago when I married him. He knows that I firmly believe that his drinking is wrong and that it is killing him (which I don't want to happen), but, leaving him is not something I want to do (been there, done that). I choose to stay. Not everybody's situation is the same and, Biblically, I have absolutely no reason to leave him nor do I want to leave. I hate to see him killing himself this way and that is something that I pray about daily.
I was not meaning you directly at all
guess I was just trying to get across the point that in other parts of the states southerns are protrayed as such. I am white, my husband is black and my mixed daughter was an English major in college here in the south and an accountant now, She, along with me, shutter when we hear ebonics. Like where you live and where I live outsiders would probably not believe with all the diversity, huh?
IC status meaning

I worked 3 weeks for a company as IC status.  They wanted a schedule so I did one and then the work was not coming through so the third week was told not to do schedule; it did not look like the MD I was going to have would get into a routine.  I did the work at night or early morning.  Was told I had to work my schedule even if I had no work I had to be there in case it came in.  Does IC status not mean TAT and production but flexibility with schedule as long as you get the work done.  Also it went from 60 minutes to 120 and then at the time I finished the 100 minutes 85 more came through and it was like she expected me to do it right then.  I had 24 hours.  Also was called as soon as it uploaded at 4p.m. one day and was asked "ARE YOU TYPING".  It was not my scheduled time and it had only been uploaded about 30 minutes.  What is your take on this.  IC does not mean be harrassed if not an employee with benefits right.  No work for 3 days and then hounded as soon as it came in.  I am not there now because I voiced my opinion.

Do most of y'all have DSL/cable?
It seems like most companies now require it - anyone still on sloooooow dial-up?
well I'm older than y'all and I can tell you....sm

I got less than a decade on you but it starts happening around 40+ (*winks at the 39 y/o poster) and it happens.  At 40, I started writing down lists, whereas prior I never needed a list (to go shopping, let's say).  About halfway through my 40s, it was "where are my keys and/or my eyeglasses" things.  I talked to a bunch of women who confirmed this (older than me).  Now, I do the room - "why did I just walk in here?" - thing.

I try not to worry about it.  I had a dad (who died nearly 2 years ago at a very old age and more than twice my age *S*) whose short-term memory was not great from his 60s on into his 90s, but his long-term memory was so EXCELLENT that he could tell you a story about a horse, his neighborhood, and a situation that he experienced at 5 years old (an emotional trauma) with such clarity and lucency, you could picture the entire situation yourself.  That, in and of itself, amazed many!

So, don't beat yourselves up about this stuff.  There are lots of books out about this very subject.  When you think about these things, well....what's the alternative?  (I'm thinking some extra serotonin *LOL*) - but really, these things will occur and I'm not choosing the alternative, that's a given (i.e., death).  *LOL*  So, I'll live with these challenging things happening and try not to kick myself every time I mess up.

I will tell you I am much better about my keys and eyeglasses today because I made places for them to sit (if I remember to not toss them wherever *LOL*)

You are all not alone, that's a given too

Thanks for the feedback, y'all.

Didn't think it was only me.  One national company, I did three months, worked until I got my bonus, figured I had deserved it.  The next company I went with I lasted six months, six months too long, not wanting to change, hoping it would get better.  The fourth national, I lasted two weeks, two weeks too long, and by that time, I knew what I was looking for, so the last company was 2 days.  Got wise!  And as another poster stated, I HATE to change jobs, but in this business, it seems to be forced on you.  When will these companies wise up?  But then, again, they have nothing to lose.

oh man I could go on a rant right here with y'all but DH just got sm
home from work so I am afraid I would get caught!
Y'all need to grow up

I have 35+ years in this field -- started out on the job with a typewriter and "tanks of dictation"  I for one read posts and it's " I only want to work Monday through Friday, I can't work because of kids, whine, complain, etc, I need benefits so on and so forth  -- I have been working for 30+ years   -- I KNOW how to search the internet, how to spell and I will spend time researching etc  -- maybe for those of you, PRIVATE insurance is an option  -- I know in my own personal experience last year when I broke my leg and was in a cast for 2 months, my hospital bill INCLUDING follow up was $26.

So, you didn't get a "Christmas/holiday bonus", so you didn't get an MT week gift  -- right now, be GLAD you have a J-O-B and quiit whining and complaining and most of all GROW UP!!!

btw  -- s/o makes $22 an hour  -- he "got a raise" but come down to the nitty gritty, he LOST HIS RAISE and is making $3.00 LESS -- no benefits either

Y'all are so sweet! s/m

The pink liquid is Clavamox/Amoxicillin. They give it to dry, and when you get home you add water to it to mix it up.  It has a short shelf-life.  It also comes in pills.

I only had one UTI in my life, which was the pits.  I do know about Azo (I think that's what they call it).  I can't remember if it's similar to/same as the cranberry juice/pills.  While I know many women swear by these products, the cranberry thing was also mentioned in my research for cats.

My vet is excellent, but he's very expensive (and oh, such a looker)!  It's nice to be on his "A-list.  Anyway, Lindsay totally freaks out when I try to use the syringe on her. She's a total piece of work, but so sweet.  At the moment, she appears to be acting better, but that's not good enough for me.  Y'all  obviously know all about that.  Of course, add the the QrazyQ "wages," as they call them, and it makes it even more stressful.  But having spent thousands in the good ole' days on my cardiomyopathy cat and even taking my "own" radiologist bud with me for her cardiac echo, $ was no issue.  I also used L-carnitine, Lasix, propranolol, and other stuff.  She lived at least 3 years longer from my protocol.

my vet told me last time that moist food is better, but I quit giving it to them a long time ago (3 cats chasing bowls, etc.).  I also read where dry food with sugar, etc. is also a no-no.

Actually, I found some Clavamox pills, but they're expired.  I think I'll try to give one to her, anyway.  It's 6 of one, half of the other, ya know.

Thanks for the kind words and suggestions.  I'll keep checking back here.  It really means a lot!

IC meaning independent contractor?
As far as I know...no...for independent contractor, they do not have to pay any benefits or even take out SS, so I would think it would be MORE not less for IC. Someone correct me if I am wrong.
I am not meaning to start a firestorm, but can anybody SM

explain this? I'm not trying to get banned, but every other site on the net survives just fine and there is no such restriction on them.

Maybe I'm dense, but I can't even make up a sensible reason for it.

Exactly what I was meaning in post below, but you say it so articulately. Thanks.
x
It sounds to me like this MTSO needs to look up the meaning of IC. sm
From your description, you have been more than understanding.  We set our hours and we work them, but are not sitting here every time something is needed.  I have worked 3 IC jobs (simultaneously) in the last 1-1/2 years, and can tell you there are wonderful companies out there that are very considerate.  You don't need this one.
Again, you've missed the meaning.

The interpretation is this: Money will speak louder than just writing a letter. Speak financially. Get it now?

'Plenty' meaning - the 6 or 7 people who

Wow, do most of y'all work in your bedrooms? sm
