word has both autotext and autocorrect plus macros

I really don' t see all that much need to buy a ShortHand program, especially when you are just starting out and probably put out a lot of money already. Just click on your toolbar, click on autocorrect, and you will get a menu that you can use to add in your new expansions.

if you would like to access this toolbar from your keyboard, you can create a macro that will do this.

Sub ATxtShow()
Dialogs(wdDialogToolsAutoCorrect).Show
End Sub

Paste this into your macro editor, and now record a "hot key" macro on whatever key(s) you would like to use.  I use alt-5, but you can use any alt or control key combination you have free.

I certainly hope this macro posts properly, I tried 3 times to post a macro that to count characters, and each time a quote mark was removed by the system, but I hope this will post properly.  I will follow up on this immediately after posting and make sure it is correct.

Can anyone explain how to copy macros & autotext to another computer?
I did this one time years ago and can't remember how I did it.  Thank you!
SpeedType and Shorthand are the exact same program. Shorthand is lots cheaper and also has a trial.

Converting Shorthand to AutoText
Well I have used my trial versions of Shorthand.  Speedtype has not responded to my trial version request.  So is there a way to convert my ShortHand dictionary so that I can use it in AutoText?  Not Autocorrect but AutoText.   Thanks
How to import Shorthand macros into ESP?
Can anyone tell me how to import my ShortHand macros into ESP? My company would not help me do it. I can't believe they wouldn't when they are the ones who tolld me Shorthand macros were compatible with ESP anyway.
Amen to that. Love Shorthand because you can do macros, too. nm

Just 1 more tip for shorthand. Macros versus expanders.

Terminology is so important here.  A macro is a function usually designed in the word processing program (Word, Word Perfect, etc.) and unless using the old DOS system, is usually used for making shortcuts for commands.  It can be used for documents, but is a little cumbersome to do it.

Expanders are just that.  They convert a series of Keystrokes into whatever has been defined for those keystrokes.  It can be a word, phrase, sentence, even a whole document.  But sometimes it can be a little slow if it is a long entry.

The easiest and fastest way I have found to insert my "normals" or "canned dictations", even those I made myself in either Word or Word Perfect is to use an import function.  It is much easier to revise the normal, too, and easier to copy.

In Word, establish the file location where documents will be stored.  I usually set mine to the name of the account I am working on (and change that data in the settings on Word - options/ file locations - when I change accounts.)   I store all my normals, whether created by the hospital or by me, in that file.  (By the way, I use a different shorthand dictionary for each account by using links.)   I give the document a logical name, and then create an import link in Shorthand.

So, my account is Onion Hospital.  My file location is set to C:onion.  My document is a physical by Dr. Celery, which I named as celerypx.    My Shorthand dictionary is onionhosp.

My command to retrieve this is:

{@KEYDOWN Alt}il{@PAUSE}{@KEYUP Alt}celerypx.doc{@KEY Enter}

When Dr. Celery dictates his hp, I get to the physical and type celerypx and the document is imported instantly.

This is even more helpful with op reports, where you have rather routine dictations for things like cataracts, foot surgeries, etc., and need to change from left or right or bilateral.

It is easier to copy the "normal" document and create one for each instance - left, right, or bilateral, that it is to pull up another command to search and replace the right, left, or bilateral, and change the verb tenses if it is bilateral.

So, Dr. Corn does a lot of cataract extractions.  I have

corncatrt.doc

corncatlt.doc

corncatbil.doc (never heard of bilateral cataracts, but just an example).

My command in shorthand reflects each one.

{@KEYDOWN Alt}il{@PAUSE}{@KEYUP Alt}corncatrt.doc{@KEY Enter}

(It is also easier to see if I do have a canned report for a doctor in shorthand this way.  I just pull up shorthand (Ctrl F10) and type corn in the screen.  It will show me all the entries I have for Dr. Corn.

You can use Shorthand in ANY program, it works outside your program
I have never found a platform it did not work with and I have worked on several different versions of Meditech. Just start using it.
It is in the Shorthand program.
Open ShortHand and click on help.
It's a really good program. I use Shorthand with it.
Instant Text also works
Shorthand program with Citrex

I believe that Instant Text will work and it is an awesome program!  I have been using it for about 7 years, really helps production and more.

Shorthand program question

I am using the trial version of the ShortHand program from pcshorthand.com.   I have some long entries in there and it seems to take forever for it to go into my report.  I sit and watch each sentence come onto the screen.  Is there a better shorthand program?  Where it just instantly pastes the entire text "BAM" instantly without having to stop and wait?

Also, maybe it just does it like this because it is a trial version????

Thanks!!!

shorthand program/bayscribe
I am having problems with this too. Did anyone resolve this? I turned of teh Bayscribe player, but how do you get ShortHand to start working>
Yep, in Shorthand & SpeedType since they are the same program.
nm
Is Shorthand a "separate" program/not DQS?
It sounds that way, but just checking.  Thanks.
Shorthand works with every program, it works outside the program you use, does not interfere.

Is there a way to copy Shorthand program from one computer
to another when I do not have the disk anymore?  Any help appreciated.  I recently bought a new computer and am looking to install my ShortHand on that computer.
Shorthand is great short cut program,
I wish you the best.
SpeedType and Shorthand are the exact same program.
SpeedType is just a different brand name and costs a whole lot more.

You cannot import into AutoText. You can copy your spf dictionary into Word and then you'll have to create the AutoText entries one by one.
Save yourself some $$ - Speedtype and Shorthand are the exact same program.

Get a decent word expansion program like PRD or Shorthand sm
autocorrect is very limited.  If you want to make money, your really need a good expander.
SpeedType and Shorthand are the exact same program. Smartype only
works in MS Word.
Shorthand and Speedtype are the exact same program, just sold
under different brand names. ShortHand does have a trial version.
Not on dial-up, but use ExText. I just keep my own Shorthand program open and minimized and use it

I use Shorthand for Windows and love it. I have found it works well with most every program. SM

I have used with Word and Word Perfect.  I have used it with Meditech and Cerner.  I have used it with RadNet and StarNavigator for Radiology.  I can use it with my email applications and on the internet if I choose.  If the Expander is open and running, you can use it with any and every window program you use.

I was really simple to learn to use too.  Very user friendly.

Instant Text Macros vs Word Macros

Thank you for replying to my VR macro question on mtstars.  I was hoping someone like you with knowledge of Instant Text and VR work could help me out.  Could you give me an example of how you would set up a macro to change a period to a comma and uncap the next letter in Instant Text for example?  Do you think using macros and commands like this in Instant Text is more productive than creating them in Word?

Speedtype is also the exact same program as Shorthand, but Speedtype is a lot more expensive.
SpeedType AND ShortHand both come with a converter file that will import your AutoCorrect entries to either program. You do not have to pay Betsy to do that unless you flat can't figure out how to do it. It's not at all hard to do. Productivity Talk has posts that even tell you how to do it -- for FREE.
{@KEY BkSp}-pack-per-year is for Shorthand. Using the semicolon works with both Shorthand and

;yo = -year-old

;py= -pack-year

etc...

PRD is a DOS program. I don't think it work with Word, a Window's program.

It will count everything if you go in the settings and program it to. Good program!
Sylcount is an awesome and accurate counting program also. That will count everything if you "tell it to".
I took shorthand too. But it sure comes in helpful for my expanders. I view words in shorthand for
i did use shorthand once in a job but i was so nervous the "boss" took pity and dictated the report on dictaphone.
If it is Shorthand, save the SPF file to a disk, then if you buy Shorthand yourself....
you can just drop the SPF file into it. That is not dishonest since you are the one who put the macros in. I am sure is it is another Expander there is a way to save the macro file and then drop it in the expander you buy on your own.
autotext

can someone tell me where I can download autotext software.  I understand it is free word expander.  I searched the internet and found rapid text and phrase something (cant remember).  Which is the better one or are they both the same.

autotext
I believe you can use autotext through Word and the function key is F3 -- I think.  I haven't used it for a while.
autotext
Go to insert, then autotext then check the box that says to suggest autotext entries.  Hope it helps.
Autotext

Hi me - does this work only if you use Autotext?

Autotext
Highlight what you want to save as an autotext entry, then click autotext, and name it.  I use it all the time.
AutoText
Thanks -- that was exactly what I needed. The only problem I had was that the font size was smaller when I inserted it in my document. Is there anyway to fix that?
autotext---
autotext was not made or intended to be used as a word Expander the way we use one. It has limited input. Once that input is reached, the file becomes corrupt and deleted. This happened to me once too, and I bought a Word Expander program instead of relying on autotext. It will never happen to me again. I lost soooooo much info that way. Most people are not aware of the limited input parameters and continue to keep adding words, etc. So sorry for your loss. I do understand.
Macros

I am not a Medquist Transcriptionist but could you tell me to record a macro and then run the macro that you just made.  I used to work at home and used Instant Text.  I now work for a hospital and can't use that.  They totally rely on Word capabilities.  I do use the Auto Correct but I think if I could use a macro it might be better.  However, it is hard to remember the various macros or abbreviations.  I also have to contend that more than one person is using  my computer.  Linda

Macros
Can you use macros on your transcription platform?
WP Macros

At Productivitytalk.com there is a forum for WP for Windows macros.  Hope this helps.

Dr. wants macros?
Tell anyone who wants anything you have worked hard at to enhance your profession as a confidential handler of information that you cannot copy or lend any information from your computer as it violates your high standard of patient or doctor confidentiality. That should shut them up!
What are macros?
What are macros and why are they helpful in transcription?
Use of Macros
I use macros for whole paragraphs (i.e. physical exams that the doctors use all the time). I use auto correct in word to use as my Expander (i.e. bp for blood pressure). I've yet to try the other Expanders such as Shorthand, but maybe someday.
