No more Wal-Mart for me
Did you read the article on how they are going to save money by cutting out full time employees for part-timers, going to hire younger people who don't look sick to save on health insurance costs, etc., making the job requirements include a lot more physical activity to exclude the retirees, etc. I refuse to shop there any more. Wait until all the younger ones turn up pregnant, are on drugs or alcohol and don't show up for work because they were out all night partying the night before. I am so sick of the corporate mentality! They don't give a rip about people any more-- just the almighty dollar so they can buy a new yacht every year.
Wal-Mart.

Point Is????  Walmart/Medquist….Sound The Same To Me….lol. It’s Called ‘Corporate America’…..Get Use To It Ladies, It’s Here To Stay And Growing Like A Giant….(Corporate America That Is; And Wal-Mart Also).  I’m Afraid They Are Just Like Every Other Business In America At The Moment. Think It Will Get Better:  Dream On!

I Don’t Care What Wal-Mart Does. They Can Hire Children And Beat Them With Wet Grape Vines & Feed Them Vinegar And Piss, I Will Still Shop There. At This Day & Time You Have To Go Where You Get The Most For Your Dollar. If I Were To Boycott Everything That I Had A Problem With, I’m Afraid I Wouldn’t Be Able To Buy Gas, Food, Cigarettes (Right & Left-Handed), Liquor For The ‘Social-Functions’ I Must Put On….Or Attend. Oh, also I Wouldn’t Be Able To Finance Anything…Ever.  So In Short, I Must ‘Turn The Other Cheek’ & Suck It Up & In Short I’ll Show The Other Cheek, Through In The Finger From Time To Time And As For Sucking It Up…Use 2 It….No Worries…LOL.

*No Worries

Wal-Mart
Here in the deep south, our Wal-Mart is definitely cheaper than our grocery stores. Winn-Dixie or Sav-A-Center do not hold a candle when comparing prices and I have done this with receipts. Wal-Mart definitely is cheaper on all products here and even though I do not like the hours it takes me, my pocketbook is better off. Had to shop around because DH is disabled and I need all the help I can get.
Wal-Mart
My two cents for what it is worth. Wal-Mart (like all other companies) offer insurance benefits to all of their full time employees. They do not offer to part time employees. This is just regular business practice. Also the statement made about selling insurance through Sam's is just a business decision. And people that do not work at Wal-Mart and do not have insurance, can now buy that insurance at a better price.
Get the facts before you post please. I happen to have family members that work at Wal-Mart and they all have insurance but they are full time employees.
Just saw some in Wal*Mart the other day
But that's one aroma that may be hard to capture!
Wal-Mart
I think the qualifications to work at the Wal-Mart in our town is that you need to have 1 tooth, dirty bra straps hanging down your arm, a tattoo on your neck. That's for the women. It might be different for the men.
shopping at Wal-Mart
Our Wal-Mart Superstore is supposed to be ready by October and it is only 20 blocks from my house.  It has been open for about five years and now they are turning it into a superstore.  Im ready.  I know some of my political friends ask how could I shop there as they dont have benefits for their employees, LOLOLOL, heck, my trans company does not provide me with any benefits either..so, sure I feel the employees pain but I need to provide for my family and that comes first..I cant wait till Wal-Mart Superstore opens, then I can do my grocery and department store shopping all at once while my car is being serviced in their automotive area.
Wal-Mart connection
My nephew has had it for 2 yrs and seems pretty happy with it, even after leaving AOL & MSN, so it seems to be decent.
My dad was a K-mart manager too...
for almost 20 years in the 70's and 80's. He has a four year degree. He is no dummy. Him being a "K-mart manager" afforded us a nice home, nice cars, and my mother was a stay-at-home mom for three kids. Managing and being responsible for a store that big is a lot harder than you think.
Link for Big Box Mart from Jib Jab (see below)

This is quite a chuckle.  Then again, the seriousness of it all isn't that funny.

another Wal-mart hater
Our rural town had a Wal-Mart which ran out all the local business, fabric store, sporting goods store, hardwares, etc. until there was nothing left, got free tax cuts for 20 years then left to build a Super store near by.  I can't stand to go into those huge stores.  It literally takes hours to shop even for a few things and most of the workers are very rude or not around when you need.  I think Sam Walton's heirs got very greedy.  I don't think even Paull Harvey (commentator) advertizes for them anymore.
Like I said, I already tried K-Mart and Shopko.
I'm not spending 8 hours a day looking at their ugly selections. They could stock something that wasn't made cheaply overseas and looks it. I skipped WalMart. There is nothing in the yellow pages under curtains. The only listings under draperies and window coverings are two miniblind companies and a fabric store. I don't want blinds or heavy industrial drapes, and I don't have the sewing skills or a machine to make my own. All I want is a simple set of curtains with a valance to keep the sun out of my eyes. Why does everything have to turn into a political or ethical discussion? Talk about being a killjoy when I'm happy about my new office. Besides that, catalog ordering has been around for over a century. Were our ancestors wrong for ordering from Sears & Roebuck?
I live right by the Wal-Mart that...
someone was trampled in last year on BF.  I've never had any problems.  Everyone seems to be super curteous. (except for the men who are constantly asking their wives if they are done.)  Everyone was helping each other find where the deals were located in the store.
Wal Mart on my poo list
I went to Wal Mart as I always do. I wanted the laptop for $386. I work two jobs and really wanted to be able to remove myself from my desk to do personal stuff wherever or do my coding job away while watching tv. They only had 25 of them. I was like 35 in line. I cannot believe that is all they got in. Then I went to get the PS2 Burnout 3 game (I needed two copies) and the Scooby Doo double pack for Gameboy. They did not get extra ones in even though they advertised them for $8. They had what was in the case only, which was one of each. Oh boy how stupid. Then I got a few things like jammie bottoms and a remote control hummer for my son and the lines were awful. They were handing out these VCR/DVD combos that were not the right ones so people were MAD.
I only have ONE gripe with Wal-Mart..
I don't care what they do or where they build stores.  Many things have come before them and put others out of business, and eventually Wal-Mart will be put out of business by something else new and innovative.  Think about when supermarkets came along.. That put all the little mom and pop grocers out.  Are you shopping at a supermarket in 2005 or worrying about the vegetable man and the butcher shop on the corner?  Of course not.. It's in the past.  The only thing that I cannot STAND about Wal-Mart is the way they accost you at the door as you leave and ask for a receipt to prove you didn't steal the soda or the milk that is unbagged.  I resent that, and no other store does this.  My DH walks past and says "if you believe I've stolen something, please call the police."  Do you know why they ask for the receipt?  Because it's their own employees who don't charge friends and family members, for large ticket items particularly.  I refuse to prove that I didn't steal something every time I leave the store.  My solution is to make them bag everything.  I swear, if I bought a car from Wal-Mart, I'd make them bag it !
WHole chickens at Wal-Mart?!?!
I wish they had them here. I live a block from a Wal-Mart! I am going to request that they get them here. It's a Super-Walmart, so why not? Yay!
I have worked for K-Mart
He needs to dress nicer than baggy shorts.  Walk in the store and see what the people who work there are wearing... he should dress similarly.  Not sure how it is now, but when I worked there men were required to wear ties and dress shirts in most departments.
K Mart pay after 30 years?
No offense intended, but how in the world can you only make K-mart pay after 30 years as an MT? I hate to say it, but maybe you've been in the wrong field all these years. I make more than double per hour as an MT what I would make at K-Mart, and I have only been doing this a few years. I don't understand why you would be making so little.
Ex-Wal-Mart Manager
I had been transcribing for 14 years, decided to go that same route and go to Wal-Mart. Yes, steady income (salary) stocks, but medical not so good. Not a steady schedule, avg 55 hours or more (for management). Decided that if I put those kind of hours working at home I would make more and not have to deal with everyone elses problems or have to watch my back. So, went back home to transcribing -- love the flexible hours, especially for my children and family, and less stress.
Wal Mart wages
I worked there at a little more than minimum wage but most unskilled businesses pay only minimum wage. The scheduling is bad but no worse than any other shift work. Also unless you have worked there you have no right to put down Wal Mart.
Wal-Mart and computers
I did not need a laptop for my entire university career, though I did need a computer.  Laptops generally don't have a lot of memory.  If you really like the idea of carrying it around with you to make notes in class, that is a personal preference.  I don't know anything about Acer notebooks, but I know a lot about Wal-Mart.  I don't think they are the best place to buy computers.  I would recommend getting an actual desktop computer from a store that specializes in electronics if you are considering working from home as an MT.  You will have to anyway.  Or if you really need a laptop get a better one from another store.
Acer and Wal-Mart

A netbook/notebook is made to check email, surf the net, do light transcribing.  It should perform as well as a larger laptop and has a better battery life than a laptop (4-6h compared to 2-2.5h).   You can check Consumer Reports or PC World to find out how well each brand performs.  Acer is a nice unit, plus it has XP.  Buy a full-size laptop and you get Vista.

As far as buying electronics from Wal-Mart, I buy all my PCs, cameras, etc., from there and have never had a problem with any of them.  The PCs are the same as the ones in Staples, BestBuy, etc., just a $100 or more less.  They also offer a service contract like the high-priced stores.  No, I don't work there.

Check at a local nursery/garden center for varieties that are bred for your area, then check online

had a similar issue with TWC and they had done some upgrades and the modem I had was no longer compatible.  The tech knew what the problem was the minute he saw the modem, only it took me about 3 months and threatening to cancel for them to get out here.
Hey! My Mom's a manager at K-Mart! She's no dummy.
Retail management is something to be proud of as well, especially after having Martha Stewart hose her out of her retirement, corporate HQ trying to get rid of the older, higher paid employees in favor of youngsters willing to work for peanuts, and WalMart and Sam's trying to shut them down.
Because you've been a K-mart manager, right?
What do you doubt?

That my dad has a four year degree?

That my mother was a stay-at-home mom?

That running a K-mart store is not easy?

Don't just do a hit and run, honey.
applying at wal-mart..or mickey D's
With all the uncertainty, the other day I was in the customer service dept of Wal-Mart and there was a place to sit and fill out an application and I thought for a second or two, maybe I should apply.I didnt but the way transcription is going, I envision myself working at Wal-Mart or McDonalds soon..
I'm fighting a super Wal-Mart

I'm in the process of fighting the planning/building of a super Wal-Mart down the street from where I live, which is out in a rural neighborhood, about 4 miles from town.  I liken this incredible increase in Wal-Marts across the US as very similar to what is happening in the MT world.  Wal-Mart gets something like 80-85% of their merchandise from other countries--it's just like outsourcing!  Think of all the jobs that have been lost to this in our country.

I understand what some of you are saying about not having the money to pay a few dollars more on whatever it is that you want to buy, but it's no different from transcription!  Those who are outsourcing the transcription to foreign countries are very similar to what Wal-Mart does with its suppliers.

Where does this leave our country?  It's certainly scary for the future of our children in the United States.

Agree on the K-mart. The one near us SUCKS.

My Wal-Mart does this too. I just look at the lady and smile.
Once I was stopped and she rummaged through bags saying that I had set off a trigger of some kind. It caught my by surprise. Yes, it is offensive.
Wal-Mart Higher and inconvenient

Something should be said about their false adverstisement.  Wal-Mart is not cheaper or more convenient as they say in their commercials.  In the small Wal-Mart you use to be able to run in and pick up something quick but not that is impossible.  A trip to Wal-Mart, no matter how much or what you need it takes over an hour.  Why do they put all those cash register lines in if they do not use them?  A gallon of milk is 30 cents more at WM than my local grocer.  This year, we did not buy any Christmas gifts from WM.  When comparing prices for one large ticket item we bought, WM was $30 dollarge more than the specialty store.  I agree, they are greedy.

Our community was one of the first in the area to have a Wal-Mart and the only reason for this was because we had a Howard's which went out of business a year after Wal-Mart opened up.  Then they opened up another store in a neighboring community.  Wal-mart stayed open for 20 years (in the terms and agreement) then decided to close and build the super store in the neighboring community.   I admit I still shop at WM for some things but if I have a choice, I go somewhere else.

I got mine at Wal-Mart for 3 or 4 bucks...

Wal-Mart has a flexible keyboard for about $18
I do not have one yet, but would like to try out the flexible keyboard. The picture shows the keyboard being rolled up like a rubber mat. That's what it looks like a rubber mat with all the keyboard keys on it. The keys look like the soft keys of a calculator.
Koss earphones....$5.00 at Wal-Mart

No brainer here. Stop payment on first check before you issue 2nd check.

K-Mart managers...Good money! Yes!
You have GOT to be kidding. I don't know about TODAY'S wages, but K-Mart, (or Safeway or Target, etc)managers USED to make GREAT money!! Yes, they DO prefer a 4-year business degree. These are/were not low paying jobs. Minus the business degree, one would have to play "work up" and it could take 20+ years to get up that high. The pay was about 4-6 times higher than a beginning school teacher last I knew.
What happened to the lady who went to work for Wal-Mart? (nm)
?
Good for you!. That lady must be happy at Wal-Mart (sm)
Hmmmm...I have thought the same thing, transcription hasn't been that great lately.  What a relief it would be to just put the computer in the closet.
At Wal-Mart here, they start at 6.00 dollars an hour.
x
Our small town Wal-Mart doesn't do that.
There is a person at the door in case the buzzer is activated but I have never been asked to show a receipt unless the buzzer has gone off.
Speak for yourself..... I can transcribe anything... Can a Wal-Mart cashier?
x
Mine is a Super Wal-Mart too! They are usually up front near the
Request them, they are just about the best of any store! They roast them in the back where the deli meats and cheeses are.
If I quit MT, I'm only qualified to be a greeter at Wal-Mart. (n/m)

Wal-Mart really pays $32/hour for greeters (sm)
to work in their grubbies? Who knew?

Madeleine, if you like words, enjoy puzzling things out, type fast, have good hearing and excellent internet research skills, and are willing to educate yourself in an entirely new career (and probably to learn far more about computers and software than you already know), then check out your local community college, take a medical terminology course, and see what you think.

I love my Bissel bagless that I got for $40 at Wal-Mart...sm
does a great job with our animal hair, bunny rabbit shavings she kicks out of her cage as well as other carpet stuff.
My hubby bought me a light at Wal-Mart for

Christmas.  I suffer from SAD too.  It is by Light America and is called sunlight lamp.  It has a rectangular head that you can adjust the position on.   I have noticed a difference in how I feel since I started using it.

I wish I could adjust the brightness on it, but I just turn it where it faces the wall when I want it dimmer.

It sits on top of my desk hutch.  It isn't anything special to look at, I think it was around $20.

I use the Wal-Mart Green-Dot card and love it. SM

There was an intial $4.50 charge when I first got the card.  They waive the monthly fee if you deposit more than $1000 a month on it which I do because I have my pay check direct deposited to it.  The only fees I pay now are ATM fees when withdrawing money.  You can reload at Wal-Mart as well, but if you are loading cash, they will charge you a fee.  However, it is a payroll check, income tax check, basically any computer generated check (not handwritten) you can load it on your card at Wal-Mart for nothing -- no fees.

I started using the prepaid card through Wal-Mart a year ago or so because I couldn't open a checking account thanks to my ex screwing up a joint account we had when married and never taking care of the negative balance as he agreed.  I got tired of always running to the bank to get cash out of my savings account to go to the store and buy groceries, not to mention my bank only allowed 3 withdrawals a quarter from a savings account and then they start charging fees.  Getting the prepaid card is awesome.  I pay bills with it, use at Wal-Mart and the grocery stores with very little fees.  Plus you download a direct deposit form off the green-dot website to give to your employer for direct deposit.  It has all the routing info preprinted on it.  I've never had a problem.

Just make sure before you quit THAT WAL-MART IS HIRING..nm

Just purchased Dirt Devil bagless in K-Mart for $50 and

Actually Wal-Mart employees make less, i know a manager making 10.50

I feel differently about the whole anti-Wal-Mart thing...
If you don't like them, don't shop there.  If enough people don't like them, they'll eventually wither away.  If the little mom and pop stores didn't charge so much, people wouldn't go to the big department stores instead.  It's called competition and capitalism, neither of which are illegal.  At one time there was an uproar over supermarkets?  Are you still shopping for your bread at the bakery, your meat at the butcher, and your fresh produce at the vegetable man store?  No, of course not, you go to the supermarket without any sorrow in your heart for the little grocer who was put out of business decades ago.
