When I worked for a national this happened to me frequently, especially when I would type and then get asked to do QA.  I would get paid for the typing and not the QA, so stopped doing the QA until they fixed the problem.  What I ended up doing was calling the payroll person to verify my pay information had been calculated right and matched up with my numbers before it was submitted for direct deposit.  Maybe you could do that?  I know you don't want to make anyone look bad, but you are not working for the fun of it. I know what you are going through with the money situation... I was living check to check and even $100 short on any check was too much to wait for, so I never had a problem asking about it.
