little food, and no sleep when you're in your 20's & 30's, as I got into my 40's it just got harder and harder. I had a VERY high-stress second job, too; I had a trucking business transporting horses. I was actually doing that starting at age 19, so was doing that long before I ever got into MT. MT worked well with that for many years as long as I could set my own hours. As the years passed and I was getting pinned down to working a certain shift, it got really tense because my trucking biz was sometimes 'on-call' for horse rescues and middle-of-the-night hospital runs to UC Davis. On top of all that, I suffered from severe, intractible migraines, and the stress of what I was doing was probably not helping that any. Add to that the fact that I specialized in transporting large horses that other people couldn't load or handle, and trying to keep up with the overhead involved in maintaining 2 trucks and 3 trailers, not to mention time sitting in repair shops, and by age 45 or so I had pretty much had it. Even so, I had a really hard time making the decision to finally 'semi-retire' and just have one source of income. So I cut back gradually, making less and less hauling trips over the next couple years, and finally setting a quit date.

It wasn't easy learning to get along with just one income source, not to mention having to wait for a bi-monthly check, rather than having checks for varying amounts (plus cash tips) coming in almost every day. But with a little more self-discipline and a LOT of attention to my finances and spending, etc. I was able to adjust. There WAS a payoff, too. First of all, I had my weekends and holidays completely free for the first time since I was in my early 20s. Also, the lowered stress level helped me get the migraines under better control. There was also more time to get healthy exercise, rather than sitting in a truck all day. (haha... and my left knee sure did appreciate selling those trucks, with their stiff, heavy-duty clutches, and buying a car with a nice cushy automatic transmission!) It was also nice to get a suntan (or even lack thereof) on BOTH arms and sides of my face, and not just the left side!
;D
