SUM Program Career Development Series
Interpreting Radiology and Imaging Dictation is the second unit in The SUM Program Career Development Series. Designed to help transcriptionists and editors improve their radiology skills and knowledge base, the unit contains 119 reports dictated by real physicians on actual patients across all radiology and imaging categories:

Plain Radiography
Contrast Radiography
Ultrasonography
Computed Tomography
Magnetic Resonance Imaging
Nuclear Imaging
Just transcribe the material and check your work against the accurate transcription provided.

The accompanying ancillary material provides guidelines, tips, and exercises to increase your understanding of medical imaging procedures. AHDI offers CEC credit to those who complete the exercises.

Bonus: an electronic version of the entire 750-page reference Radiology/Imaging Words and Phrases.

I have used the SUM ESL training CD, and the programs they have put together are outstanding.

Maybe stage 1?
!!
At my stage of farsightedness it has been

recommended by my ophthalmologist. but ONLY at this point in my deteriorating near vision.  You do make a very valid point, as my ophthalmologist did warn me that I will probably eventually require bifocals. I would NEVER recommend dollar store reading glasses to a person that does not have regular eye exams.  Deterioration of vision under any circumstance could be a warning sign of potential health problems.

I have been wearing glasses for far vision for almost 40 years.  This near vision problem just started recently. I only use the dollar store reading glasses when I am wearing my contact lenses.  I have routine eye exams every year, including glaucoma screening etc. and I am fortunate enough, at least for now, to be able to get away with dollar store reading glasses.

My appointment with the eye doc is coming up in December and I have this sinking feeling that the time has come for bifocals for my regular glasses or prescription reading glasses when I'm wearing my contacts. Worst case scenario would be bifocal contacts.  WAY too expensive for those and I'm not THAT vain!  I just like the far vision much better with contacts than with glasses.

Gosh, I'm only 45. I was in hopes that the companies that print the instructions/warnings, etc., on a bottle of over the counter analgesics were just making the print smaller.

Ain't life just grand?

Stage Fright

In answer to your first question, I just hope MT stays lucrative at least until I can collect Social Security.....four more years, I think.

About stage fright, my son teaches fourth grade. He is a wonderful teacher and is to at ease with his students. But whenever he has to speak in front of any other type of crowd, he's a basket case. If you're meant to be a teacher you'll do fine.

WAY better - now there's actually room on the stage...
for all the others!
I'm in the 'now what' stage, as well. I know I need -
to do something to get out of a profession that pays such low wages that I qualify for food stamps, but I'm pushin' 60, and it's getting a little late to go back to school, and working 12-hr. days, where would I get the time (or the energy)? I keep looking around for a profession involving writing/words, but the few I see out there, such as technical writers and other similar jobs, all want a B.A. degree. Most secretarial jobs require proficiency in computer programs I've never learned, and would again require going back to school. Would probably go back to an inhouse MT job (if I could find one.... they're kind of few and far-between), and I don't want to relocate. It really is a catch-22; need more education for the few jobs out there that I could do, but have to work so long & so hard each day at this one just to pay the bills and get by, that there's nothing left, unless I want to get by with little or no sleep each night. Flipping burgers at McDonald's is starting to look better and better.

not all kids go through the no grandparents stage (sm)
my son is 18 YO and guess where he takes his g/f on Friday and Saturday nights? To his grandparents house! He and his friends love to hang out at their house...dont' know exactly why, but I'm glad! At least I know they aren't out getting into trouble.  If you start out building a strong relationship with your grandkids, they will always want to be with you...and don't act too much like a grandma to them, more like a good, um not friend, but just a good person! I think that's why my kids love the most about their grandparents.  Kids are a blessing...at any age!
The RMT is just in beta now
and is meaningless, in any case. Very few employers care whether MTs have a CMT or RMT or whatever. Even fewer even know what a CMT is, and it's a sure thing no one's heard of RMT. The whole certification thing is simply a power grab by AAMT. Their goal is to sponsor legislation in every state that will force every MT to be certified to be employed. Since the AAMT is the only organization offering "certification", guess who will benefit from the whopping fees they will charge to take the test?
re: beta
Could someone who is computer literate please explain this "beta" stuff to me and what it means? Thanks !
Have seen them twice (Las Vegas and L.A.). They put on great stage show. Tickets were under $100.

RMT Beta Exam
How many of you are taking the beta exam for the RMT credential? Are you planning to take the final version after beta testing, or will you not take it at all? I'm curious. I received email notice that they have openings until June 1st. Should I bother? I know that many companies ask whether or not we are certified, but do you think it will come to their asking if we are an RMT also? Any and all opinions welcome. Thanks!
stage fright solution? I knew a wise older man once who
said the key was to think about the people you r speaking to, instead of yourself. Think about how much they need you, the positive effect you can have on their lives, the gift you are giving them in your education, how much they need the human contact, the kindness, the discipline, the "touch" of your voice and smile. Once the focus is off of YOU, and on THEM, it becomes much easier. Takes practice, tho.

I work as a beta tester and they pay me to do it.

I don't believe anyone would pay the 90-somethng bucks to do a beta SM

test which is practically useless.

Well I too have been selected for the beta test-sm

I am absolutely thrilled about this test and once I have 2 years acute care experience I will write the CMT as well.  To me it is very well worth the $95 US to write the test, even the beta test.  This is something that I would like to achieve.

No, it is not for everyone.  No, not everyone wants to spend $$ to take a test. We all have different ideas of what is right for us.  For me I want to have those letters behind my name.  In a couple of years I would like to trade them in for the CMT.

I know that there are many here who dislike AAMT and are stongly opposed to many of the things that they are doing but I have got to tell you I have gained so much by being a member of AAMT and especially the Online Chapter of AAMT.

If you don't like the fact that there is offshoring going on well that is too bad...it is here and it is probably here to stay.  What we can do is offer credentially, such as the RMT, for those in other countries as well so that the can be required to meet a certain level of education and training.  I know I gonna get yelled at here for this one, but this is my opinion.

Beta test? Can you elaborate on this a little bit more?
x
I think it's nuts that it's still in beta test but we still would have to PAY to take it. sm
If I'm helping YOU develop your product, I should not be paying! When game developers need people to beta test their games....the game company PAYS THE TESTER!  AAMT is absolutely out of their minds.
I tested the beta version
I enjoy using the software. I work in InScribe over half the day and have tons of shortcuts in there. Until now, I could not use those shortcuts in other programs. I imported the InScribe shortcut file to Ditto and now I use those shortcuts in WordPerfect and Word. The shortcuts work in e-mail, also. The pop-ups are not annoying - they go away after a few seconds if you do not respond to them. You can do functions with it, also. I have not tried whole blocks of text. For me, it's worth the price. I think you can download and try it before purchase.
Beta testers needed for MPLite

The beta testing for MPLite has been going well.  Phase 3 of the beta testing will begin on Wed or Thurs of this week.

We are soliciting 2 or 3 additional volunteers for this final phase of beta testing, and anticipate this phase to last no longer than a week.  Volunteers should be experienced working transcriptionists, but not so busy that they don't have time to read the help file, and set things up in MPLite.  We need the testers to actually work in the program, and not just look at it.

Testers will receive MPLite free of charge, and all subsequent releases of MPLite free of charge.  If you have the interest and the time to assist us, please send an email to support@mpword.com

Most likely, MPLite will be a the most popular program we have ever produced.  For a preview of it, see our website:

Anyone else get an email from aamt about REGISTERED MT beta test?
Seems pretty stupid to me.
U love beta fish? Aren't those the ones that kill

I remember my exhusband always had Japanese beta fish when we were married.  As I recall, if my memory serves me well, these specific male fish impregnate the female fish and then when she has the babies, the beta (male) squeezes all life out of the mom and kills her after she has the babies.  Just the idea of this made me hate this type of fish 4ever.

Just one person's opinion though!  No flaming please! *LOL*

Value of SUM program...What would you pay???>>>

I asked this on the equipment board, but I think maybe I'll get a better response here, so I hope its okay to post it here, too.

Does anyone know what the SUM CDs are worth?  There are some on ebay.  The beginning one is 2005, and usually they are the older ones on ebay.  I looked on the HPI website, but they come with books and are VERY expensive.

Anyway, does anyone have an idea of what they are worth without any extra books?  I want to bid on them, but don't know how much.  They are at $9.99 each now.  There is a beginning one, an advanced one and a surgery one.  Shoot.  I want them, but don't want to pay too much, you know?

Thanks for any input.

SUM Program
First, realize if you are able to study independently. The SUM cd's that are on ebay now are the new 2005 editions. You will be able to find the additional books you need on eBay over a few weeks. My advice to you is 1) go to the HPI/SUM website and print out the Student Syllabus and assignments for beginning and surgical (this will give you all of your assignments and a list of what supplies you will need, 2) email the eBay seller and make sure she is including the password codes to "unlock" the cds (Without these, they are useless to you.), then bid what they are worth to you. I have seen them go from $10 to well over $100. I sold a one myself (and not the new edition) for $125. Since I now have everything I need, I will pass on a little hint for buying cheap on eBay. Look for the packages, purchase them, take out what you need, then relist the rest. I now have a second computer (used but fine), desk (nice and new), all the reference books needed for the SUM Program, every Stedman's book that I could ever want (the latest editions), flash cards from Career Step (which come in handy), the extra AAMT cd's that M-Tec uses along with macros and every possible item I could ever want. In the end, not only did it cost me nothing, but I actually came out ahead in the end.

So, if you have the time, this is an excellent way to purchase training materials. Good luck and happy shopping.

DQS program

Hello out there - Starting position who has DQS program.

I find it to be very poor.  (In fact those who know the Meditech program - I prefer Meditech over DQS anyday)

I have a lot of issues with the program; however, will just ask two questions, please.  Any advice is greatly appreciated.

1.  Does anyone have advice as to the quality of dictation.  I am not referring to the physicians quality, but the inability of the DQS program to have more than 4 selections for speed, which are terrible.

Is it me or is this par for the program?  1-2 speed hash marks are draggy, 3-4 is distorted.  There is not a happy medium for clear dictation but at a rate you can type quickly and accurately.

2.  Also minutes - never measured my work in minutes how many minutes a day approximately to produce 1500 lines a day ??

35+ years transcription experience - this is the worst program ever.  Hey that is just my opinion, I could be wrong (5000 lb gorilla).

DQS program
Thank you so much for your information. You have hit the nail right on the head.

I too did the same as you. It seems almost impossible to get more than 700 lines. I am so confused as I usually average 200+ lines/hour on all other typing plateforms I have ever used. (Even Meditech)

Your reponse has really helped realize the program frustration is not completely my fault.

THANK YOU - God Bless

See Clearly Program. Has anyone every tried this?
If so, did it work?
I believe you would need a program also.
I don't know of any free ones that could be used with a pedal but I certainly could be wrong.  Some companies have you test within their platform and it might work there.  Good luck!

Sorry not sure which board to put this ? on but I have sum program with 12 tapes side a and b, machine and answer key and have no idea of what kind of a price to put on this.  Any advice would be appreciated.  Thank you.
don't know what program UR using but I NEVER

My reports, especially with ESL, come in better than they (the ESL dictators) can actually dictate.  I have to do editing, sure, but it's mostly punctuation, or wrong word(s), setting up paragraphs, doing some headings - it's very rapid for me (used to edit in a previous setting but not medical) but, yes, it is less $, so you work smarter, not harder, in this biz.... I'm much faster on VR than straight transcribing and wish I had more VR.....
