Better earplugs

If you can still hear traffic, your earplugs aren't good enough or you're not using them correctly.

Try getting foam plugs that are rated to block as much noise as possible. Look for the decibel rating and get the highest you can find.

They need to be inserted full into the ear canal rather than just stuffed in a bit. Roll them to matchstick diameter and insert them before they expand again. You might have to pull outward on your ear while inserting to straighten the canal so the plug will go in.

Also try a CD of rain or a waterfall rather than music. The music may blunt the noise, but it will keep you awake. The rain/waterfall won't.

Don't think the drugs evaporate from your system when you wake up. It can take days. If you're taking diphenhydramine to sleep, you're going to be working with it, too. Some drugs make you sleepier, but they can also interfere with your natural sleep so that you don't get enough rest.

Glad to help. I've used earplugs myself.

Not that I worked 3rd shift, but when my older son was still at home, he'd get home from work between 10:30 and midnight and wake me up every single time.  He's very loud with one of those voices that carry for miles.  If it was 11:00 and he was on the phone, all I could hear was, YAH, I HEAR YA DUDE. . ."  We could ALL hear him! :) The whole time he's slamming the microwave door, rattling dishes and silverware, etc. Earplugs were my only hope.

It's been sooooo quiet since he moved out on his own.

Transcribing by speaker or earplugs?
If by speaker, how in the world? But, if by headset, have you checked to see if there is a shortage in your headset? I have had that in the past, whether it be in the cord where it splits to L&R cords or in the ear plug portion itself. Have you checked to see if it plays that way on speakers outloud, with earplugs unplugged (assuming they plug into your speakers)? What about deleting and reloading the iType program?
Earplugs/muffs for sleep....

Anyone know of comfortable earplugs or soft earmuffs so I can sleep?  Neighbour above me runs her washing machine in the middle of the night, and I can't sleep.  (I've tried reporting her to property manager without success).

I've found most earplugs are uncomfortable, so maybe I have sensitive ears.  Anyone know of a soft foam type device that rests outside the ears rather than in?
