In Reply to: Check inside... - love it....

The second paragraph was in answer to your slam of me: [QA is overrated and yes they do need to get themselves.... QA are MTs that think they know more than a regular MT... in a nutshell....]

I stated a simple fact. Experience = knowledge. Plain and simple. I was not tooting my horn and I certainly was not insulting new MTs. I train new MTs for crying out loud! I am a mentor. I would never insult new MTs. In fact I used to be one myself, and that is why I have EMPATHY for new MTs and that is also why I have chosen the THANKLESS job of QA - to try to help the likes of you.

I am not certainly not selfish or condescending. If I were either, I certainly wouldn't have chosen this thankless job.

As far as my credentials, not that they should be any concern of yours, I have been an MT, editor, auditor, MT trainer, MT supervisor AND I owned my own business, and, yes I am still "simply QA" and darn proud of it.

Don't assume that you know anything about me. Period.

I have been an MT for 38 years. So I definitely know a LOT more than most of the newer MTs.

Why don't you concentrate on doing a better job and maybe someday you can be qualified for a QA position. Sometime in the way, way distant future...

The above is very condescending and very selfish...  After 38 years I would hope to further along than just QA; that's right JUST QA....  no big deal...  It's not like she's saying she owns her own company; she's simply (yes simply) QA...  Nothing special or maybe she is "special" after 38 years and never climbing any higher than JUST QA....

I don't like the way she comes off about new MTs or lazy MTs....  She is a very poor representation of MQ....

Also, be certain to check into this (see inside)
My daughter has her internet service through a satellite provider (Wild Blue). They apparently have very strict guidelines for how much time used and if my daughter exceeds her predetermined allotment, there are days she can't even log onto the internet while her account "rejuvenates" (or some such jargon; I have cable internet, so some of the terms are foreign to me).

Anyway, check into it. I can see where running over the limited time allotment could cause major headaches for an MT or anyone who works from home and relies on the internet.

(To the tekkies - Yes, I'm certain I've used incorrect terms herein but, as I said, I don't use satellite internet myself and understand very little of the technical jargon my daughter explains to me, lol!)

If you deleted the actual dictionary, it should be in your recycle bin. Look for the *.spf file.

Otherwise, here is a website with a ton of info on ShortHand for you, including how to print your dictionaries.

DID you check with Social Security& does your son receive a check???

Go to SSA.gov and research the payee options.  You may have to use the search engine, but your answer to this particular issue should be there.

I am disabled and while my kids were minors, I had to fill out a form each year on how I, as the payee spent each and every penny of the money they received.  I don't see how his mother can justify how she spent his money for things that you normally would pay.

That said, he is getting Social Security right?  Is your son receiving a dependent check?  Under law, if a parent is disabled and has minor children, each and every one of those children also receive a check until they turn 18 or graduate from high school, which ever comes first.

The check is a percentage of your husbands, so for 800.00, your son should receive at least 350.00.  If you have not been getting this, they would pro-rate it back to when your husbands disability started and that in itself, could solve a lot of your financial problems.  You can also find this out on their website,  HTH

no - don't check out wildblue. check out hughesnet. sm
i was on wildblue. i absolutely HATED it. i paid $400 for install and equipment and bill was $51.51 a month for smallest plan. no bills, had to be direct debit from credit card or bank. wasn't a lot faster than dial up and i frequently went over my download limit so i had to upgrade to the $80/mo plan. speed was no faster on their "fastest plan". they had a 1-yr contract and only 1-yr warranty. well 20 days (kid you not) out of warranty my tria (the eye on the dish) went out and it cost me a total of $275 for replacement and tech call (had to wait a week and a half before tech could come and then he no showed and rescheduled for the next day stating he didn't have the equipment he needed to fix me and the repair order had been in for over a week by that time. no call to say he wasn't coming either, just no showed). they TRIED to sell me the entire package all over again to get me locked into another 1-yr contract and i declined. it was best in their book so your warranty and equipment would be "new". i had to tell them for 5 months to change which credit card to debit from, never could get it right. had to tell them for 3 months when my phone number changed. i could not wait until the day my 1-yr contract was over. have heard really good things about hughesnet. i think it is a tad more a month, but supposedly a lot faster than wildblue and not near as many problems from what i have heard from others. wildblue was down for an entire week at one point throughout the year i was on it. always got lost signals and page cannot be found multiple, multiple times throughout the day. i used wildblue with VPN (with transtech) and could not keep a connection enough to get a decent line count as i was dropping signals too much and it did slow it way down. i finally got clinic work rather than acute care where time and speed wasn't a factor. research message boards for complaints about wildblue and hughesnet before deciding. also hughesnet i think told me a 2-yr warranty rather than only the 1-yr with wildblue.
Check the classified board here and check

I was hired by MQ to work at home.  It took four months for me to complete the program.  I passed MQ's test and was hired as a regular employee, not a trainee or intern.  They were confident I could do the job based on my test scores and previous nonmedical work experience.
Do they have both? (see inside)
I'm an SE with them. Yep, I have a schedule but it's compacted into 3 days. I'm allowed to work all I want past my line requirement. Usually, I do get on at the end of the payperiod to see what extra dollars I can get on my check. I was encouraged to do that.

My prod sup said that they especially have so many people who won't pull their schedules and won't cover weekends that she'd never deny me work.

Didn't know they had ICs as well. Thought SEs like me were the only ICs MQ had.

Learned something new!

Hi! See inside

I think you can make more money on clinic notes as they are easier...even though you usually get less per line, you can usually pump out the lines quicker.  There was a recent discussion on the hosp/clinic board about this.  Here is the addy, but I'll add the link below too.

Some accounts use wav pedal, some use C-phone. You can probably rent either from them if you don't have one. You use your own computer.
See inside.

It was from Jan. 3rd.  It read:

It is so easy to convince yourself you cannot make as much money at a different company  or on a different account, or never find anything better, so you stay where you are, taking all the abuse in the world.  In management, this is called the Golden Handcuff, and they rely on it to keep the same employees, never give a raise, never give respect, and just continue to walk all over you.

In this profession you are very mobile if you can transcribe at all.  It may take a month to get used to a new system, a new account, or whatever, but your self respect is worth it in the end.  There are a lot of companies out there that actually do appreciate employees, and it certainly does not seem to be any of the companies who are mentioned frequently on these boards.

I changed jobs about a month ago, thought I would never learn, but in a week I was making far more with a small MTSO than I ever did with a large company.  Treat yourself to a new beginning and a new year.

Hope this helps.

I am saying that this horrible thing could have been prevented.  My sister woke up in the morning to her partially eaten chickens (whch are actually her pets) because the coyotes got to them.  She called feed stores and even the county to find a way to solve the problem.  Somewhere along the way someone gave her the following idea.  Her husband and some friends dug down a couple feet into the ground and put plywood straight down into the ground around the chicken coop.  This has worked 100%.

I am saying that if this was the first time her dogs had gotten out, there would've been no fault to her.  But, since this wasn't the first time she could have fixed the problem.  Worst case scenerio she could have a pen for the dogs to keep them in.

I hesitated in even responding because I knew I would get the reaction you gave, but if this could prevent her other dog from being a victim it is worth it (or any other dog for that matter).

My heart breaks for her.

I envisioned renting a studio in the little town near by. My radiology job I have now is with a national and I am making about 50G together with the PT job but...PAC system has just been installed and VR is being introduced. Imaging facilities are facing cuts in Medicare patients (20% of business) so I know they will look at transcription for cuts.

I am still contemplating this. They need 13 and so I think I have a few months to consider this. Am in Visalia.

Yes, the atmosphere is a consideration as well. Where are you working if I may ask?

I thought I was on the right track. I'd still like to have some more opinions.

It isn't my child. It is my sister-in-law's child. But even after that the office staff seemed happy to hear from her.

To reiterate, for you to stop by this morning to introduce herself and leave some work samples and a business card (she doesn't have any brochures) would be totally appropriate in your opinion, right?

Thanks again.

I worked with EditScript and tried using the same thing you did and it didn't work for me. I had a new computer without a 9-pin port, so I just returned the USB adapter and went and bought a 9-pin serial port and that worked great for me.

I say leave it alone. QA is not your job, and in all likelihood, the QA people would not take kindly to your pointing out other MTs' mistakes.

As well intentioned as you may be, believe me, don't do it.

My son is a full-time college student without a car, so it's not practical for him to have a job. Besides doing the lawn and the trash, he works for me by doing all laundry and dishes and I pay him $20 a week so he has a little spending money, plus it gives me more time to work since I don't have to do laundry or dishes! I know of at least two companies who hire people that haven't even finished their MT course yet, some of them have barely started the transcription portion or module or whatever. I have the ability to look at samples where I work, and it's disgusting the ridiculous errors that are in these finished reports!

i don't know who you work for or what their policy is, you'll have to ask them, but as for the laws on this:

The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) does not require payment for time not worked, such as vacations, sick leave or federal or other holidays. These benefits are matters of agreement between an employer and an employee (or the employee's representative).

this is from http://www.dol.gov/dol/topic/workhours/vacation_leave.htm
