Depends - one account I make 40 an hour, other - s/m

Posted By: it really depends on 2008-12-22
In Reply to: MT pay survey! - curious girl

I grunt it out to make 10 bucks an hour.  If I worked just the ER account, I would definitely make full time money for part time hours.

Durn second account.  :}

RE: Depends on the account
No it does not!!!!!!
depends on which account
It really depends on which account you are going to be working on as to how much of a response you will get.  There is one account manager who manages several who is NEVER around, doesn't answer emails or the phone and it's been whispered she may even work another job.  There is a huge group of clinic accounts without a manager, they got rid of her, probably to save money since there have been lots of money saving cuts going on.  Currently that one is being overseen by the HR lady with no transcription experience (the second in command, watch out for her, really thinks anybody can do the MT or Editor job without having any experience).  There was another account with a really good manager but a bad platform, but she finally left, so hard to tell who is there now.  The actual owner is a very nice lady but unfortunately isn't much involved and only knows what her second in command tells her, and she makes it look like she has all under control, and in reality she is the second top reason most people leave this company.  A new manager has been hired for the new account we have, but yet again she will be limited by what Ms. G. will allow her to do, which won't be much.  This used to be a really good company but steadily has been on the decline.  Tell me what editor will put up with bad platforms, 100% listens and low work for 3-3.5 cpl?  What MTs will stay on with bad platforms and being ignored when there is no work?
Yes, it depends on the account (sm)
I do think it would be strange to have a PE section.  The physical exam section is the "O" section, for Objective.  It would be redundant to have PE within O.  You may want to ask for samples.
Depends what account you are on. I have been
there just over a year. DocuScribe is easy to learn, not bad at all. I don't have that many ESLs, mostly they are residents, but still I don't know about other accounts.
I think it depends on what the account wants, and
In fact, one account I type wants it both ways: They want all abbreviations expanded in letters, and usually no expansions except in certain circumstances on all other dictations by that account. The 'twice a day' vs. 'b.i.d.' thing is trickier. If my account has no specific rules about it, then for the sake of continuity, if the first couple meds in a list are written one way (such as b.i.d.), then even if they say twice a day on the next med, I still type it b.i.d. That way there's a little more uniformity, and I think also the list is easier to read. Of course, it all boils down to the preferences of those you work for.
Depends on account, but discontinued
would be correct (sometimes it means discharged)
It depends on what your clients or account wants. sm
BOS sometimes does not matter. The only thing that matters is what the people who sign your paycheck want on their reports.

It depends. If you have a very difficult account

an hourly rate would be great, but being paid by the line I make $20+/hour and I don't think companies would be willing to pay that hourly, so I guess I would have to say I'd rather be paid by the line, unless it is editing and that is a whole different story.   I also think being paid hourly would make me maybe not work so hard to get lines and perhaps slack off occasionally.   Depending on what shift I'm working I'm up and down every hour or so, putting a load in the washer, feeding animals, loading the dishwasher, etc.  If I was getting paid hourly I should not be doing that stuff.  I am not very disciplined and find it hard to sit still for more than 2 hours, so I would have to have a change in my routine.  I enjoy the flexibility of being able to get up, even go outside and sit on the deck and watch the sunrise, etc.   Another pro for the hourly wage though is at least you'd know what your paychecks were doing to be every payday and could maybe budget better.

I find it really depends on the account.
I really lucked out that I am on an account that has been doing VR for a while and the docs all speak pretty clearly. The reports come to me pretty clean. I only have to verify demographics and make minor changes to the report and I can get pretty good line counts.

On the other hand, I know MTs who aren't so lucky and end up having to transcribe many of their reports because they are so bad and end up making less money.

I love my VR account. I decided to do VR to save my wrists. I have had problems with carpal tunnel, but not since switching to VR.

It also depends on your account specifics too...
if it is verbatim, you type what they say...
Depends on your account, I would guess.

Some accounts want a strict SOAP format, so you would disregard the other headings.

I personally work on verbatim accounts so we put in any headings they dictate.

It depends on the account guidelines.
For the majority of the accounts I work on abbreviations are only expanded in the critical sections, such as diagnosis, impression, etc. This is to the client's preference, and it is considered an error to expand an abbreviation when it is not necessary.

As far as dosages, I always transcribe what the dictator says unless it is a prohibited abbreviation or an error. Prohibited abbreviations are changed, per client preference, to the acceptable term. If it may be an error, it is flagged for review. If the doc dictates "twice a day," they get "twice a day." If they dictate "b.i.d." that is what I transcribe. It is also considered a error, at least at my company, to alter what is dictated.
Much depends on the account/accounts that you are on (sm)
Like everywhere else, I suppose... I've been with JLG for almost 12 years and have had the same main acct the whole time. It's a large hospital system, and yes, lots of ESL, but only a few that I would consider dreadful. Have been on some other accts with virtually no ESL. Have also been on work types where I could rack up lines like crazy, and other times (like now, for instance) struggling to get 1200-1300 per day. Have had times where I felt extremely micro-managed, other times don't hear anything from anyone for literally weeks. Paycheck has always gone out on time, but unfortunately no longer do direct deposit. I guess you could say they've been a little erratic since I've been with them, but overall I am pretty happy. I believe they have several different platforms - I'm on "EHR" (for the past year or so) and while it's a little slow going from the patient information screen to the document screen and back again, it works with your own Stedman's spellchecker and with Shorthand, so better than some others that I've been on. I will say that the support personnel have not always been the best, but, again, I've seen a lot of people come and go! Hope you find a position that's perfect for you - or at least nearly so!
I have been paid both ways. Depends on the account. nm
n
I guess that depends if it is a verbatim account...
I think even so I would type feces....
I agree, it depends on who you work for BUT also the account
and how long it has been on VR. If it has been on VR for a few years, piece of cake. If it is just starting out on VR - tedious work, low pay as it takes longer to edit than to just transcribe it.

I have been doing VR editing for 4 years now with an account that has been on it that long also...can make up to $50 an hour, and some times as low as $30 an hour when we add new dictators.

Hope this helps.
Same for me, I made more 10 years ago. It depends so much on account, SM
work type(for me), and expanders. I find it hard to stay motivated when report after report is ESL and a work type I can't make money on. The above poster likes radiology, I like OPs. It is easier to stay motivated when you have that.
depends on location, I know someone who lost a local account - sm
in Woodbridge, VA, was charging .12 a line (60 character line), got underbid and lost it after having had it for years.  Now in order to get more but look less, she bids at .10 a line but a 50 char. line....comes out to .13 if a 65 cpl.   You can't get much over .10 around here on your own which really stinks, or do some fancy accounting which in this case works.
I do not know about words per minute, but lines per hour. And everything depends on the dictator.
x
I consider myself a pretty fast Mt, and I am lucky to hit 100 reports a day...depends upon account.

lines produced also depends on type of account, doctors, specifics, platforms.
nm
I make over $20 an hour
and I do VR work with some text, mostly VR. I live in Georgia but unable to tell you where I work as the last time the company THOUGHT I was recommending, was told in no certain terms they did that. Well, excuse me.....
what do you need to MAKE per hour? take that x 3 and that's your ans. (sm)

When you are an independent contractor, you have to pay ungodly taxes just to start out with.

You have overhead etc.

So say you need to make at least $10 an hour (my gawd you can make $10 an hour at WalMart! running a cash register)....

anyway, if you want to make $10 an hour after taxes and overhead -- then you need to be charging at least $30 an hour.

Now how long it takes for you to produce $30 an hour worth of work is yours to figure out.  If it's difficult work, you better charge a lot more than 7.5 cents a line (at 65 characters per line remember!/not 80 or 90 characters)

If its easy clinic work or ER work, then charging something like 12 or 13 cents a line would get you about what you need.

If its difficult work from a medical records in a hospital where you have op notes and tons of docs, you need to charge probably 15 to 20 cents a line.

There are so many hidden costs that docs don't want you to remember.

Those down times when your computer gets fried.

New programs, updates (again down time plus cost of updates)

New computers because everything goes out of date and you can't fix the computer because nothing is compatible anymore.

The updates on the internet costs - faster speed - the increase in costs from the internet company.

You get sick and just can't type - or family is sick.  There is no sick time to draw from -- you just hope you have some money saved - which you can't save if you are charging 7.5 cents a line as an IC.

Getting the picture yet?

Then there is the fax machine you probably need to be a proper business and the cell phone for when they just have to contact you.

The heat and a/c to keep you going at home that would not be running if you were at an office all day.

I tell them they might make $25 to $30 in 8-hour day...
...when first starting out.  I used to get asked, often by the same people several times, until I started breaking it down into financial specifics.  Nobody wants to hear that and they don't ask again.  Most people ask me about transcription to "make a little extra money".  I tell them that I had to look at my first MT job as an internship, making less than minimum wage to get experience while being home with my daughter (we were stationed in Hawaii when she was an infant/toddler - admin jobs paid $6 an hour and daycare, like everything else there, was outrageously expensive unless you could get on the base waiting list so working out of the home was not feasible).  I explain that entry level pay for many companies is 6 cents a line.  I tell them that training programs give basics, real learning is acquired on the job and much of their day will be consumed looking up unfamiliar words, drugs/capitalization, etc.  I explain that many doctors are foreign, have tough accents and/or speak quickly which also hampers production.  Once they get the picture that 10 years' experience is what allows me to pay the bills, I no longer get repeated questions from the preacher or fireman who may think that typing fast enough to keep up an IM converasation and having WebMD in your favorites are all skills and resources you need to do this job.
At 18 cpl, yes, I make sometimes $50 an hour. nm
x
Please tell me where I can make $20 an hour!
I left QA a couple of years ago because the company I worked for started paying per line for QA and then I noticed a lot of MTSOs following suit.  I would love to be paid $20 an hour for doing QA.  And I'm not talking SR editing, I'm talking QA, editing the MT for quality.  A lot MTSOs don't know the difference!
I can make up to $40 per hour....
But the keyword is CAN.  I don't always make that, but when I'm in a pool of one GOOD dictator, it is easily done.  I love those days.  If I could do that all the time I would be in business.  I think there are too many variants to determine an exact hourly wage.
Make sure it's okay with your account first,
off that they aren't going to get back right away.  Usually as soon as it's signed off, they consider it transcribed!
I make that much, but with my own account(s). sm
When I worked for a service, the most I could make gross was 45K a year. Now, I triple that with my own accounts. I am not sure what their secret is either, but mine is having my own accounts.
I make $43.50/hour and my doc knows that it takes me - sm
three hours to do his tape from transcribing to printing.

If I even went to him and said "I want to charge for the copies," you can bet he would be looking for a new transcriptionist. He has had plenty of offers from other transcriptionists to do his work at a lower rate, but he likes my work, and I will not jeopardize that whatsoever.

My ink costs me $32/month, which is an expense write off.
350 lph when when a majority of us don't even make $10 an hour out here?! What are you asking us
.
I do MT and make about $35-40 an hour. It can be done and is out there. Keep the faith! nm
x
Per line - could never make much per hour.
I do 350-400 lph at 12 cpl - no one will pay me what I make by the hour! Per line is the way to go, plus keep your flexibility.
It varies but make between $12 and $16 an hour - nm
xx
Wow, I make $15 an hour as an editor and ...sm
thought I was doing pretty good. I can make more per hour line wise, but I get easily distracted, which causes me after 8 hours to do very badly. ;o(
If I worked an 8 hour day I could make that much
money.   I only work about 5 hours day and make good money, but I have a good platform, paid for gross lines, fairly easy to get lines, etc.   I am an employee too.
You are pathetic. I make $35 an hour with
you would make some money.  Instead you want to stir up trouble and complain.  Why not look at what you DO have instead of what you DON'T have? The reason I am in MT is because I make $35 an hour and I can't make that anywhere else.  If you don't believe it, I don't care.  I'll go back to my work now and make some money, and you can sit on this board and b*tch and make nothing.  And it's your own fault!
I agree. I make 8 cpl and get $29.00/hour
you have to stay in one place long enuf to get used to the dictators, then you can make good money wiht them
I am a sub bus driver and make $15 an hour - sm
doing that, though I never know when I am working, waiting on a route....when that happens I will bring home about $1200 a month which will be nice on top of any MT work I do (still plan to do this but cut back some when I do finally get a route). So for now $60 for working 4 hours subbing for another driver, I can live with. Makes my life a little easier.
Although I would love to make $72 an hour...
I have to admit that is a bit over the top.  But my point was that unions are there to protect the workers and make sure they get a fair and decent wage for the work they do.  If workers aren't protected, corporates would have everyone working for slave labor kind of like MT is now.  Yes, MT is production paid and we all knew this when we signed on but we aren't protected and our pay keeps getting driven down by corporate.  At least unions have negotiations with corporates - give a little, get a little.  Compromise.  We MTs have NOTHING.  We have no say in decisions being made, even when those decisions negatively impact our jobs.  I know as an MT I would never agree to ILP or ASR as those two decisions are the downfall of our industry, only my opinion of course.  Corporate keeps making these decisions that will only benefit them and their own pocketbooks.  They are not looking out in the best interest of MTs because they don't have to.  As I said in my previous post, they keep chipping away at our jobs little by little because nobody is stopping them.  But if we as a whole had some sort of organized leadership negotiating on our behalf, then maybe we could stop ASR and ILP from taking all our jobs and the MT industry could once again be a respected profession that we could actually make a decent living at like it used to be.
It is possible. I make more than that a month, my own account. nm
x
A lot of us here still don't make $10 an hour. You're lucky. nm
,
I teach and I make 20.00 per hour. Not that great
but nothing to sneeze at either.  I teach community service classes (medical transcription, anatomy physiology and medical terminology) at a local college.
To start expect to make about $6 an hour - sm
If you are good, meaning not having to look up a billion things and a quick and accurate typist then you can make more, $16+ depending on the type of work you do. I am not a fast typist, though I do not have to look up much (except for address which slows me WAAAAAAY down), and I currently make about $12 an hour with 4 years experience. So this is no huge money maker. As you are only looking to supplement, you could probably expect to make an extra $30 a week to start, presuming you can find someone to take you on for so litte work. In time you may get that up to $60 a week, but still it is not a fortune.
but VR usually pays by the hour. A fast MT will make less $
x
Figure what you make per hour doing tapes
x
It really depends how much you make at hospital. If
zz
Depends on who you work for as to how much you make..
The first online company I worked for, unfortunately, found out later they were India-based. Anyway, I work in Escription and made SQUAT. It would take 12 hours or more to make $100. Now, I work for another company that uses Escription and I can make up to $26 an hour doing VR. I think these companies set something up in the line count as how to count it and also it depends if they pay for headers, footers, etc. I definitely got ripped off the first go round. I like the company I work for now and like Escription. You can make money on this platform, although I am paid more than 3.5 for VR. That is ridiculous.
You make 25-30 an hour by letting the editor do your job for you dumba$$!
You will get yours in the end sweetie. Having someone else do your job shows you are lazy!!
Even if they pass, how can they do the work? They will make pennies an hour and
zzzzzz
