We have a small local paper that comes weekly in the mail...

and I spend most of my time counting the spelling errors when I read it.  The best one was the headline one November that proclaimed - HAPPY THANKGSIVING.  Did I mention this is a FREE paper. I would never pay for something like that.

Another one I saw a number of years ago, mirrow instead of mirror. And one time at my old job at a manufacturing plant, they were taking a bus trip to some shopping "outlits."

I am a teacher's kid and stuff like that really bugs me.  Good thread by the way!

local business

Look in your yellow pages for companies that re-cycle as they will stand behind their cartridges -- at least in Portland they do.  I have a large laser HP and my toners cost me over $100 at Office Depot even their re-cycled one.  But several local companies offer for about $75 to $85 and they deliver and last just as long.  I do a lot of printing and so go through about 3 per year at 10,000 copies per toner.  Seems sometimes it is cheaper to buy a new printer.

Small Local MT Business
Hi Rachel,

What part of California are you in, and are you looking for any partners?

If so, please e-mail me.
I went to a local business college which sucked.

My first job was a p.r.n. position with a local hospital filling in for vacations and people off sick.  That's where the real education came from.

many opportunities
Coding is definitely the way to go and the money is so much better than MTing.  Check out Advance Magazine for healthcare professionals.  I am also starting to see remote coding jobs at home.  If more hospitals start using electronic records systems, there will be more coding at home opportunities in the future.  I love MTing, but it just is not paying for me and I am considering coding.  There is also a great shortage of coders, so the jobs are out there for us.  I will just do MTing on the side.
employment opportunities
Have you thought about getting into medical record coding? I have a friend who went back to school at age 59 and is now coding and she had no medical experience at all -had worked for Nokia and Motorola for years and got tired of the layoffs - she loves it other than getting the overseas dictation to decifer - but that would be easier for you as an experienced transcriptionist. It's just a thought - but you would probably breeze through the course or might could find a hospital that would train you doing ER coding.
Prior MT..BS.Ed...job opportunities?
Thinking of returning to the MT field. Little background: I'm currently teaching high school, Bachelor of Science in Ed. I was a MT off and on for 12 years prior to starting my teaching job 2.5 yrs ago, almost all of that experience in a hospital, one year with WebMedx at the end. I also did IC here and there locally. Not sure teaching HS is for me, LOL. But I hate to waste my degree too...are there trainer jobs? Should I look into QA or editing? Am I being completely silly for re-thinking my MT career?? I miss the medical community, have been a part of it for most of my adult life. I enjoy the education aspect, just not sure HS is the right fit. Any suggestions appreciated! Thanks :D
Mentorship Opportunities
Hi there everyone! I am starting my 3rd semester of an MT program at a community college in September. I am really hoping I can find a mentorship, either now, or at the completion of my program in December. I really wouldn't mind if it was unpaid since I mainly would like to get some "real world" experience. Can anyone here point me in the right direction of a mentor/intern opportunity??
there are opportunities for daytime work...
just keep scouring the sites...here, mtjobs.com, getmedicaltranscriptionjobs.com, indeed, jobster, simplyhired, but most importantly your local workforce site (unemployment) in your state (they list national jobs too). Good luck!
"Excellent MT Career Advancement Opportunities"
... yeah right. Anybody seen the article in AAMT's Plexus?
The article portrays career opportunities for the MT which includes editor, QA, supervisor, yada, yada, yada. These jobs are portrayed as "advancements" but no where does it address the pay compensation or lack of. From what I see in this forum the pay seems to be low considering the fund of knowledge and experience needed for being an Editor or QA specialist. The one thing I note is that the article does clearly recognize that need to have mastered transcription BEFORE being a QA specialist. Seeing what I see here on this forum it seems many QA people don't fit the bill. Not bashing those quality QA's that are out there, but think it's the company's poor management that don't recognize what is needed for QA.
Buy local. The local stores pay taxes to support your city and state. (SM)
Using online and catalogues does nothing to promote the local economy.  We complain about outsourcing and about the big companies gobbling up all the work so the jobs at local hospitals are gone, yet we do the same thing when we buy on ebay, catalog, and these web sites that may be located any place in the world as their primary business location.
weekly pay
I bring home right at 1000 a week, but that's a FT job, a 20 hour per week PT job, and a 15 hour per week PT job. My FT job just basically pays for my insurance costs.
once weekly sm
Take it, I did this for years and the once weekly is now hard to find, they want it back on the Net in 45 minutes sometimes. Why not work for yourself instead of some big wheel who make a profit on your sweat equity? BYOB - Be Your Own Boss!
I went local. Great local tech support, they know what I do and were able to set it up just for me
:)
Any other companies pay weekly besides EFD?/nm
nm
True. That is about my weekly pay.
nm
Sorry, I was making around $250-$300 weekly

Weekly earnings

Am relatively new to at home transcription so I am not doing as well as most poster.

Instant Text is relativley new to me, but helping prodcution.

I am not familiar with MP Lite. I know someone will be kind enough to share.

Thanks!

And what do you consider "a ton of money" ? What do you make weekly? nm
x
NEMT pays weekly. nm

Walmart is a weekly MUST and of course we're waiting for
x
As stated below, I agree. Overall weekly average is approx. 600 lph sm
Now, granted there are days I can do over 1200 lines an hour, but overall within the week you have those dictations that take a little more time.

I have made more money on this platform than any other. Absolutely love it!

What is, on average, a normal weekly IC report production?

I need your opinions please….

I am an IC who works for four doctors who each dictate approximately 100 or more reports a week.  They send them via over to their personal website and I download and transfer to Express Scribe (awesome program by the way).  They tend to call me often and will ask for one or more patient’s report to be faxed over immediately for insurance purposes.  Of course, they have no idea how complicating and time consuming this is on me, when I have to search for these specific voice files, one by one, and then transcribe the report, etc.  I felt a bit of an attitude the other day when it took longer to perform my task.

I am wondering, am I just too slow?  Is completing 400 or more reports (on average half page reports) a week slow, including transcribing these special request reports?  I feel so stressed all the time now; their phone calls for insurance purposes are becoming more constant.  I am wondering if they realize that I am not an employee, but an IC, and that there is a difference.  How may reports do most full time IC’s complete within a week, plus deliver 2-3 times per week?

Thanks for any and all advice.

Unfortunately it is legal..so yes it is business and they will continue with bad business practices
x
2 part time (totaling 40+/-) 1 pays weekly/1 biweekly.

Weekly for food.  Biweekly for bills.

I remember in Weekly Reader the article discussing "pay TV" and how we didn't see that anyb

would ever pay money to watch TV. I always thought it would be in a coin box on top of the TV set. I couldn't imagine having enough money to do that.

Weekly Reader also predicted that one day we'd go to the store and pay with a card instead of money, that our money would be "virtual" and stay in the bank.

That was about 1960. It was actually a pretty close prediction.

Curosity- I am curious if I am making the normal amount of money weekly for MT. Would anyone care
to share their weekly amount of pay?
Defragging & running spyware weekly helps the speed a bit, but more memory and a faster processor
s
Quick question or poll - What does one consider "good money" for weekly bring home income? sm

Would you consider $1000 a week, IC status, working 5 hours a day, 5 days a week "great money"?

What do you make a week and how many hours do you work?

This is for informational purposes only and not to belittle or degrade anyone or boast and put anyone on a soapbox about their income.

Thanks for your help!

I made my business your business by posting and...
I totally respect everyone's opinions. It is easier for others on the outside looking in. That's why I pushed the "post reply" button yesterday. I trust my fellow MTs and I know the more I read from you all, the more confident I am becoming. I just need that final push, not from him though. I also wanted to let you all know that the physical abuse while I was pregnant was documented by my doctor and the hospital. I only wish I had known then that it is a felony to abuse a pregnant woman. I also photographed my face from a couple of weeks ago and told several people in my circle. I had such high hopes for us. Now...not so much. I'm not saying that I won't try to get him to church, but I realize that God can only do so much for someone who isn't listening. j
Business is business. Internet forums are

How about a home health aide or an aide for Hospice? Get paid weekly, too. nm

For a business ad?! A business that deals
''Transcriptsis'' x2

''with good track record''

''serve our clients of all sizes'' (I know what they mean, but I just think the wording is funny)

''strive to achieve highest possible quality'' (once again, they never met an 'article' that they didn't hate)

''all departments including H&P...'' (or a comma, for that matter)

local
I am in a small town in Florida and I had one set up by a local one person company, cost me about 500 and he gave me a 5 year parts and labor warranty, I had a minor problem with it, I took it to his store and was back home in an hour - didn't have to have it shipped to me, didn't have to wait for "rebates" and would do it again any time.
would the local
mental health center be able to help? (if a child psychiatrist is not affordable) Might Social Services have a referral, or a crisis hot line possibly have referral information?

I think this child probably either has been exposed to visual porn in some form or is mentally ill.

Pray for them all too.
I have a local ISP (sm)
I have a local ISP so unless you live in the State of Michigan I am afraid this won't be much help to you. :) Here is the link anyway, just in case. :)

I would take the local job. sm
what is so nice about the local job is that you have the same dictators over and over.  You can use your expander/templates/macros, etc to get really fast on a local account and work less and make more.  Good luck.  The local jobs are the best IMO.
I do both. Go local. Luv my local job. nm

local ic
Hi there! If I did a local account for a hospital, would I still need a license? I know for the state I am in I would need one if I had accounts of my own. Thank you so much!
Need to look for something local, like
a small clinic or doctor's office to get your foot in the door and get some experience. Most larger places require experience, but some only a year or so, so see what you can find locally, even if PT, and start there.
Now you know the local job market and my
home situation better than I do.  For your information, I make more working parttime at home doing MT than I would working fulltime for any of the local advertising agencies.  Plus, I don't have to travel or put my kids in daycare.   Thank you so much for your concern about my employment situation, though.  And please, get off your
I went back to local. sm
Local companies are popping back up because people are getting fed up and going back to local.

I had horrible trouble with downtime with Adelphia, so I switched. Last time I talked to Adelphia I talked to a "rep" who was obviously in India, who asked if I was enjoying the snow.

Arst uz enjozinz' snowz!

It was May!

Now I can call and say "Yo, Eric, hows it going? Having a little trouble here."

I went to wireless and I have toooooo many trees. They trimmed branches for free and they also gave me free dial up backup, just in case, so I won't lose any money.

I have had them since May and I haven't lost a dime. I've lost the wireless on occasion, but I have the dialup to back me up.

With Adelphia, I had downtime sometimes for days. Still had to pay the ridiculous bill though!!!
I like my national (PT) but my local is the best.

With my local I know exactly what I'm in for and how long it's going to take me.  With my national, I can work hard at it and do the extra or just meet the requirement.

My local has picked up a ton of accounts so I may be able to find a national that doesn't have a "schedule requirement," i.e. 3 hours 4 days a week and one weekend day.

With my local, I can say, "Hey kids, not much work, let's go get ice cream?"  They like that, but they hate "Mom's gotta burn the midnight oil."

It's a trade off. I'm not complaining.  I burned my nylons in the fireplace last October and I don't miss them!

I have one local account that does that (sm)

I've gotten used to the fact that he'll do a 2 page report on an established who is being seen for a an earache.  He has to go through all of the other medical problems, review of systems, etc., instead of just saying something like medical history is in patient's chart.

The other doctor in the same practice will just do: Chief complaint: ear pain. Examination:  Left ear is red.  Assessment:  Otitis media.  Plan:  Amoxicillin.

The hospital and the practice have tried to get him to cut his notes down, but apparently he likes to hear himself talk.

No skin off my nose, I see that I have a tape for him and I sing, "I'm in the money!"

thank you, that is great to know...how do you know it is local?
what is the best way to tell?  we have a (small) butcher shop here, but I see the trucks pull in from all over, and they even have told me their meat is just ordered from all over.

Do you from a farm?  I live in WNY, and there are plenty of dairy and cow farms, but was not sure they would sell direct...

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

I still will not eat meat, but my boyfriend does, and I have to make it every day...would feel much better if it was local...
I get it all the time. I have a local guy
who is amusing.  He addresses every report to me personally because he knows I'll be typing it.  Then he adds commentary and personal opinions.  "I don't what this yahoo was thinking.  G.D. idiot.  blah, blah  If you can figure this out, let me know."
Maybe get local accounts
I was lucky enough several years ago to hook up with a urology office that was expanding its practice. I did this at home for a long time. The pay was excellent and, of couse, only 5 doctors, so I got very used to doing them which increases your speed. Also, there was not all this looking up doctors from huge databases which really slows one down. Maybe you can check around your local city and find something like that. It doesn't hurt to try.  Good luck to you both!
If local co can be trusted, then go with them, but SM

will probably be more expensive. Again, they can probably customize it for you.

On the other hand, I just bought a Dell.

Get a local acct (sm)
The middle man is making money on your work. Cut out the middle man and you'll make more than $15 an hour.
I do not see how you can get around this with local accounts.
You are always going to run across patients that you know.  That is why confidentiality is so important.  Yes, I know things about people that sometimes I wish I did not know.  However, the people who work in my physician' s office know things about me that I wish they did not know.  My physician is a client of the service I work for, so I do not see any way around it.  In my opinion, typing reports is no different that actually working in the office with the patients.  You just have to keep your mouth shut.
Buying local ....
Unfortunately, some of us don't live in areas that have a lot of choice. My town is tiny and we have a teensy WalMart that has items that (I really think this!) have been there waiting to be sold since the day it opened years ago! I buy from JC Penney's from a catalog outlet here in town (if they're open) or online, sometimes I shop in one of the larger neighboring cities. Frankly, unless I'm buying cotton or watermelon, it ain't happening here :-).

However, in defense of your statement, when I lived in a larger city and had variety (and choices!) I did shop in town more often than not. I miss those days LOL.
