Don't believe everything

Clark Howard talks about a lot of things; however, he is not God and does not always peg things correctly, so do your own research first.  On one show, he was knocking network marketing companies as well.  Yet, if you do your research, network marketing companies is what a lot of people go to first when needing extra money - again, reasearch the company.  Most companies pay only 40-50% because it is their product and need the remainder for research and manufacturing.  I recently got involved in one that deals with Fortune 500 companies which are products and services we all use every day - so own nothing and is a debt-free company that pays back 90% of the profits.  It is great.  My friend is making between $4-6,000 a month and has been in it only about six months.  Anything is possible, but no guarantees, of course.  So along with my one transcription account, I am now doing this too.
