Drs comments were inappropriate, IMHO

Dont you think his comments are a little inappropriate?  To be dictating and saying that?  He can put the information in a research paper he is writing but to state it while dictating?

and besides, why would he take a chance, in this day and atmosphere, on such things causing suspicion about his intent?
But isn't that a little inappropriate?

inappropriate stepfather
I'm an adult, in my mid 30s, and have had a stepfather for the past 15 years.  Lately, he and my mother are at each other's throats, extremely unhappy, but he is too old to leave, in his 70s.  Ive never been close to my mother but go over there weekly or a couple times a week to talk or share a meal.  For the past few months, my stepfather has made me uncomfortable with sexual comments, looking at me in a sexual way, and suddenly wanting to hug me and will not let me leave without a hug, which he has never done before.  Its gotten so bad, I do not want to go over there anymore.  I don't want to say anything and cause a big stink because its all so awkward.  I don't know if he's getting senile or what.  He also takes constant pictures of me whenever i'm over there.  I've stopped going over there and I dread it, but I feel guilty.  Am I blowing this out of proportion?  Its changed our relationship.  I have talked to another family member about it too and she thinks I should tell him to stop, but I'd be extremely embarrassed.  I just dont want to be around that environment, but I dont want to completely cut off ties to my mother, even though we are not all that close anyway, she's my mom.
mL is inappropriate for solid
measurements for tissue specimens, etc., so either cc or cubic centimeters is appropriate. Ask any pathologist.
re: inappropriate stepfather

Some of you remember about this topic a few months back, and you all supported me so well, that I decided to post again on the subject.  I hope admin does not remove this, I know it should be in the depression forum, but no one goes there and you all were so nice before so...

I had told you about his advances, the comments, the suddenly wanting to hug, and the inappropriate looks.  I have been wearing all but a potato sack, messy hair and no makeup and even let myself not smell so good, to keep him away, but nothing works.  I still want a relationship with my mother, and she does not like to go out, so i'm stuck going over there all the time.  Ive even gotten downright rude to him, do not look at him or direct comments anymore, and he has gotten so daring as to now touch me inappropriately.

Last night we went to dinner, I didn't want him to go, but of course its my mother's husband so he's there.  I gave him the cold shoulder the whole night, ignored his flirting and just talked to my mother.  Towards the end of the night, when I was leaving their house, I hug my mother and he was standing right there waiting for his.  I am extremely uncomfortable with this, so I just say bye.  My mother got furious and wrote me an email as to why i've become so cold towards him.

Well, with me holding all this inside for so long, (besides telling one person who has a big mouth and really did not help me out much at all), I blurted out that I want nothing to do with this family, I will not be coming around anymore.  There is no WAY I can tell her why.  So i've just made the decision to stay away from the family, in order to spare her embarrassment.  I think it's the right decision.  I'm going to be extremely lonely, because it couldnt come at a worse time with the holidays coming, but I have no other choice.

This whole thing is humiliating.  I can't believe she does not see him doing these things, but she does tend to fall into denial to avoid things.  But with her accusing me of being "cold"...well, thats the last straw.  I need to stay away, and I don't want the entire family to know about this around this time, even though i'm ready to explode.  Writing here has helped me somewhat.  I wonder if i'm making the right decision.  My family adores this guy, his own family won't have anything to do with him.  I feel like i'm all over the place, but i'm just so confused and sick.  Wonder if i'm doing the right thing by removing myself and keeping this under wraps at least for the holidays?  The only person who is miserable is me, and i'd rather it that way than the embarrassment of this all coming to light.  Very lost.

Thank you guys for hearing me out.  Again, admin sorry about the off topic but I posted it here before and it really helped.

Inappropriate stepfather
What does your husband and other family members say about his behavior?  There is a possibility that his estrangement from his own children could have to do with a bitter divorce rather than inappropriate behavior.  You say the rest of your family adores him.  Why not talk to them?  If he is being inappropriate with you, he is probably being inappropriate with other female family members. I doubt he'd just single you out, especially with your doing your best to appear unattractive.   If you are not married, is it possible that there is a twinge of jealousy that your mom has a husband and you don't and you are imaging this? Not meant to be hateful, just wondering why you would allow this to continue.
inappropriate stepfather

I was molested by my stepfather from the ages of 8 to 12.  I ended up telling my mom when I was in my 30's.  She was horrified that she had not known what was going on, but did nothing.  Life went on with me trying to stay away from my stepfather and never letting him be alone with my two daughters.  Then one day I was at my mother's alone with my youngest daughter and he was there.  I was in the other room, working for my mom that day, and my daughter came in and asked me to come sit in the living room.  She laid down and went to sleep.  I thought she must be getting sick.  The next day she said she had something to tell me and my heart sank.  I knew before she said the words.  He had began to touch her inappropriately and that is when she came and got me.  I took her to the doctor I worked for and the police were called.  I also went and confronted him at his job.  Funny thing he was fired the next day for "some reason."  He was arrested, after running for a while, and ended up pleading guilty in court.  My daughter was 10.  I lost my mom and sister over it, they thought I over reacted, but my daughter had the reward of knowing she stopped this man from molesting others.  Not long afterward he developed lung cancer that very quickly metastasized to his brain and he died on a Christmas Eve.  You have to tell to protect others.  I live with guilt daily because I never told when I was young.  Stop it now before he does this to others, if he is not already.

Inappropriate stepfather
My heart goes out to you in this terrible situation. BUT, to not tell you mother the absolute truth is to go along with, be involved with, and perpetuate the environment that this degenerate soul buries himself in to continue hisr sickness. You must see how this sick man has placed himself in a family that will not speak out. They do this because they attach themselves to a person or persons in a family that keep quiet about inappropriate sexual behavior. Your mother is a victim too but until she has this situation blatantly shown to her, she will continue to go on protecting him. She may even go on to protect him once she is confronted also. That is a chance you will have to take. But that is not your problem at that point. You know this is an unhealthy situation and unlike your mother and stepfather, YOU know the difference. Your uncomfortableness is your ticket out of the situation, painful as it is, you do know what good mental health is. This situation is telling you that. It is sad, but sexual inappropriateness can run in generations of families simply because it is not brought out in the open and the chain broken. Just think that some other innocent female, child, could also be put in harm's way because this sick man is allowed to by not exposing his illness. I feel your pain about your concern for your relationship with your mother and what will happen, but you are whole and have no reason to dress entirely covered up. You have a RIGHT to be yourself and not go out of your way to minimize this man's illness. By doing so you are being part of this dysfunction. Be strong, seek professional guidance or a support group. You lose nothing. It is only a matter of time before your mother breaks out of this suppression. Chances are like so many other women, deep down inside she probably has some suspicions that something is not total right with this man. The hard part is hoping your mother changes.
Still inappropriate whomever he was talking to
Comments were still inappropriate for someone to overhear on the phone.  Suppose it was the woman whom he examined listening on the phone while he was discussing her size?  That is one thing the hospitals I have worked at tell you first up, do not ever discuss a patient in the hallways, elevators, offices because family members or the patient himself/herself could be nearby.
Totally inappropriate. You should relate this to
She should remove it or the company should remove her.

A lot of people think it is inappropriate to ask the salary of others...
probably why no one is answering your question...
IMHO...sm

QA gets the pits because the good ones aren't hard.  I've never done QA, but I know the reports with blanks I do have are from really awful ESLs or Americans.  I think I'm pretty good with ESLs, but some of it is just flat mush.  And of course there are those folks who don't really care about what they're putting out, figuring QA will cover their butts.  You're going to get the dregs just by nature of your job.

As far as going back to MT, if you love it, do it.  Life is short, why hate your job?  It's a big part of your life.  I work for MQ and I'm doing fine, contrary to all the nay-sayers out there.  I'd say research companies or look locally, because it's not all as bad as you might hear.  I've worked in offices, as an IC, and now as an employee at a national.  Good situations are out there, just do your research, and take all the complaining with a grain of salt.  Complainers are usually the loudest people on the boards, it's human nature.  Email me if you want to chat more.  Best of luck!

IMHO
I worked as an IC for a private practice for 4 years on an hourly rate. It worked out just fine. Of course you have to keep track. That sometimes can be difficult but it certainly can be done.
IMHO
Well, I'm a "newbie" also and am getting so discouraged with looking.  If it were me, I'd take it and run.  I haven't even been able to find a company that would offer that much of a chance!  Anyway, like I said, I am a newbie also, so I don't have an experienced opinion, but its an opinion all the same.
IMHO...

Okay, with an hourly rate you can do some figuring.  I believe that, even though one would typically have more experience doing QA, they do not necessarily make more money on a per hour basis because their line per hour rate is much lower than the MT rate to make up for the greater number of lines done when editing.  I think QA is primarily a bonus in that you don't have to do all that physical typing.  I think MT and QA makes about the same amount per hour in general.  Assuming this, then you can figure out where you are pretty much.

If you type 160 lines per hour at 0.08 cpl, then you are making $12.80 per hour.  I don't know for sure, but that sounds like a pretty average number of lines per hour and line rate for many MTs out there, so what you are making sounds pretty average, IMO.

If you want to challenge yourself, however, you can do better.  I can do almost 200 lines per hour and make 0.09 cpl, so that's about $18 per hour.  That's as an independent contractor working at home through an MTSO, not an employee, and not as an IC on my own accounts (make much more on those with no MTSO middleman).  Even if you stayed with the 0.08 cpl and upped your lines by 20 an hour to 180, OR if you went to 0.09 cpl and stayed at 160 lines per hour, you get a raise to $14.40 per hour.

Hope this helps!

Well, IMHO we MTs
are worth MUCH, MUCH, MUCH MORE than that!
IMHO your best bet is to find an
accredited community college near you that offers an MT course. They don't really help you find a job, but they don't make empty promises about that either. They will introduce you to other established MTs in the area, and you may find a mentor there. Also, the cost is reasonable and the instruction hands-on, usually by a CMT in your area.
Unethical, IMHO

I have this to say to that person

1.  Its stealing from your fellow teammates.  You are awarding yourself 4 hours of their shift and their work because you're too lazy or too incompetent to get your speed up.  They have bills to pay just like you do, and are sitting there out of work because YOU stole it.  Especially if THEY are honest and only work approved OT.

2.  Its lying to your employer and yourself as to how efficient you are, when you are falsifying your time card.  It is also putting them in jeopardy with the labor board, should you both get caught.

3.  Its bragging to post this - bragging that you are lazy and incompetent, and like to steal work, so you think you're smart and slick to have found a way around hard work and better skills.  Shame on you!

Thank GOD where I work the ONLY way you can type a job is if you are punched IN to the time clock.  So I know you're not my coworker.  I pity those that are.

IMHO, I would leave. (sm)
Some people/companies are using the hard times right now to profit themselves, basically just reducing pay when there is really no need. Yes, I understand that there are legitimate companies who are in trouble and really need their employees to reduce their pay or lay them off.

BUT, ask the doctor if his income has changed in anyway. Has the patient load decreased? Are the insurance companies not paying? Its just like these executives who get a 250,000 bonus after they get bailed out, yet they are laying people off left and right. Just does not make sense to me and if they really think they can find another LPN to do their transcription and do their nursing, then they need to try and find one. I am sure you can get another job somewhere else where you will not get taken advantage of.
IMHO, MTWS is better

MT Word Seeker is definitely better IMHO.  The search results are more to the point, perhaps because it searches 1100 medical / MT websites.

can't think of one female who dictates well, IMHO.

the point in a nutshell, IMHO sm
the point I think everyone is trying to make here is, yes, most of us have done it and succeeded with small children, BUT it is by no means easy. You have to be flexible and hopefully have a flexible employer. It's not impossible, it can be done, but it won't be a piece of cake! If you're motivated, organized, and willing to compromise a portion of your sanity, then by all means, go for it.  But the bottom line is this...you have to do what works for YOU, not anyone else! Think it through and make an educated decision, and not one just based on the opinions on this board.  Good luck to ya!
IMHO and experience, in most, if not all careers-SM
the better your memory and flexibility, the better your success.  If your memory is so-so, then find tools that will increase your success, i.e., account post-its and sample reports, even reading something out loud.  For me, if I handwrite what I am given in print regarding an account/doc, I am more likely to remember it.  Making handwritten notes takes time, but helps things stick in my memory.

Remebering my childhood as an animal eater, I think it is harder cooking for meat eaters and way more expensive than vegetarian foods.
IMHO Speedtype is a costly version of...

MS Word's AutoCorrect.  I bought is and asked for help in transfering my AutoCorrect entries to it.  The owner kindly answered she would do it FOR me . . . for an additional fee of $25!!!!  Being as I had just paid $189 for it, I thought that was terrible!  Her instructions for doing the transfer do not work.  I honestly think it is just a ploy to make more money.

I finally did the transfer myself, after numerous tries.  Now I don't even use it.  Since it isn't anything "special," it isn't worth the trouble.  I much prefer IT to SpeedType.  In fact, ANYTHING other than SpeedType is better, in my opinion.

Nope. Not her. Not starting trouble. Just IMHO.
Honest observations. Wondering if this board is a good or bad part of my day, and thinking out loud. But, as usual, mixed feedback and as this post above which I am answering shows, a lot of paranoia out there too. Probably this is it for moi. Just not my style. See ya.

TechSupport what do you think? IMHO this is all in preparation of EMR, compressing the
long, very narrative and repetitive version of straight transcription. You are building a new software, or at least a software template for EMR. Isn't this it?

Bayscribe kicks ExText's booty, imho. SM
I have worked on both. Bayscribe only has the 1 page on which you enter information. There are dropdown lists of providers (no additional lists or documents), you can easily change templates at any point in the report, and the only shortcoming to Bayscribe that I have found is the spellchecker, which works okay but could use some updating.

ExText, on the other hand, had multiple pages per report, no way to easily access provider information, changing a template required a bunch of steps, etc. etc. I never did make much progress with ExText, although I know that some of my friends love it.

It may be what you're used to, although I think it would have been a lot easier to start with ExText and move to Bayscribe than it was for me to start with Bayscribe and then move to ExText. Bayscribe is also fast to load and fast to work in-- no VPN.

Hope this helps.

Two comments....

First of all, everything you say may be true of the mother regarding her suspicion, but as I always try to do before I criticize and pass judgment on others, first try to mentally "walk a mile in her shoes."  You might be thinking the same thing under similar circumstances.

Secondly, she signed a waiver for her daughter to go on that trip with full knowledge that these "adult children" were not going to be supervised by these chaperones in any fashion other than just being "available" if they needed them and to help out if anyone lose their passport or suitcase, stuff like that.  The mother knew full well why she was letting her daughter got to Aruba... TO DRINK AND PARTY!   If she didn't know that, then she's a dense as they come.  I wouldn't give my daughter 2 cents towards a trip to Aruba at age 18.  There's only one reason to go to an island like that, to drink.  If the beach is what you want, we've been known to have a few beaches here in the USA, but they don't want that, they want to be free to party it up.  So you can't blame the chaperones, at least not in my opinion.

You should keep a separate record of hours worked so that should you ever decide to file something with the Department of Labor that you worked OT hours that were not paid you have a record to submit. Other MTs have done that in the past and indeed been paid the back pay they were entitled to.
thanks for the comments!
I appreciate knowing this can be done...

Thank you for your posting; I find it very useful.  However, I want to comment on the fact that, during training, I never heard of the BOS and received absolutely no feedback.  So, to think that newly trained MTs are ahead of the others, is not necessarily correct.

As a matter of fact, the very first time that I ever heard of the AAMT Book of Style was upon receiving the graded and corrected FINAL EXAM for my course (Career Step) which made reference to my use of a dangerous abbreviation.  I then inquired as to WHAT IS A DANGEROUS ABBREVIATION, at which time someone did RESEARCH and, after a few days of research, reported to me that she had to ask someone else and discovered that a dangerous abbreviation was defined by AAMT, as mentioned in the BOOK OF STYLE.  I immediately purchased a copy of the book and studied it on my own.

I think that none of us fits into any one category.  I hate it when I am stereotyped, especially with regards to what a potential employer may think I know or do not know, or may be capable of doing, as determined by the exact number of years that I have been working.  There are plenty of exceptionally good companies out there who have totally rejected me due solely to the fact that I have less than the number of years of experience that they require, while my current employer constantly gives me the most difficult jobs because I am, in his mind, "one of the best."    Of course, I can't wait until I have those required number of years of experience so that I can reject those very companies that rejected me back in the days when I only had 2 years of experience!!

I appreciate this thread.  It has been very educational. BTW, not only can it be a difficult situation when you work for a "family" business with the wife being the office manager, but I have had negative experiences as a patient when the wife was the doctor's manager.  It just doesn't work out.

While I agree that "other duties as assigned" can be interpreted in many ways, there must be a limit to this.

What I have learned from this thread.

1.  If you have two professions such as Nurse AND MT, write a separate resume for each.  Whether or not you reveal your transcription skills to an employer who is employing you as a nurse is your decision, but should not be required.
2.  As an IC MT, write your own contract.  Stipulate that your MT "business" includes certain duties only pertaining to medical transcription and performed at your location during the hours that you decide.
3.  Stipulate that because MT is your private business entity, due to conflict of interest (or whatever terminology you decide), you do not conduct your private business functions during the same hours as the employee job unless you want to and it is clearly understood that there will be separate charges.
4.  Once you have an established business and income for that business you may need some kind of business license or need to be registered.  The laws vary determined by your state and/or city, county, etc.  However, usually you do not need to register your business until it is actually making a profit.  In the meantime, the existence of your business on paper would offer you some kind of protection against an employer who has employed you as a nurse and is attempting to take advantage of your transcription skills.
5.  If an employer attempts to have you do transcription on the side, out comes the contract.
6.  Do not offer discounts to anyone simply because they are a friend or employer.  Treat them all the same, require them to pay extra for extra services.  Spell it all out in the contract.  In other words, protect yourself and set them up in the beginning so that they know they will not be able to take advantage of you.

Last I looked, the nurse practice ACT, at least for RNs, is rather specific and does not include such tasks as mopping floors or transcribing dictation.  You sound like a very nice person who has attracted someone who seeks to take advantage of your kind nature.  Don't let them do it.

You should go take another look at ripoffreport.com. Read the rebuttals, there seems to be more of them than the actual complaints. Pretty much most of the complaints are people who signed up to sell and decided they didn't want to anymore. Definitely not a fault of AmeriPlan. And like most of the rebuttals say on there, get your facts straight before you post your allegations on the web. There is always going to be some people with every company who are not going to be satisfied and complain about it.
some various comments you all might relate too

When asked what I do for a living, I tell them, the response I get the most is this "oh, i've heard of that.  Been wanting to get into it as a side job."  Gee thanks.

Or "Did you have to go to school for that?"  And actual disbelief when I tell them I did.

Or "Don't you get sick of not being around people?"  Again...gee thanks.  What am I a shut in?  I still at least go out and check my mail a couple times a week!

Or "Whats that"  Blank look on face or extreme disinterest or disappointment.  Gee, thanks again.

And here's the meanest one that I received from a guy I was dating for awhile "Are you just afraid of being successful?"  Hmmm.....can I get a gee thanks?

Thank you for your comments, but I would not be posting

and asking for any more money if I had not checked into the situation thoroughly first.  UPS even said that they hire extra drivers over the holidays that do not use UPS vehicles, so anything could have happened.  I'm not pleased about this situation, but I am trying to at least provide a Christmas for the kids.
