There is an Compatibility Pack for 2007 files, which can be downloaded from the MS site. I updated this and still had the same problem. Then, the lightbulb went off. The original author used a bizarre font that I don't have on my computer. When I changed her font to one that I have, I had a viewable document. Hopefully, my stupidity will same someone else some aggravation.
