Go do Dell.com and click on laptops. To the far right is an icon that says "looking for Windows
If you click on that, they offer computers that have XP on them already. I have not checked into this, but the prices listed are the same as for Vista computers. You might check it out, and let us know if it is legitimate. Good luck.

Express Scribe is very easy. Files download, you will see them, click on one and it starts when you
press your pedal.  That simple.
Grease Lightening!
Grease Lightening is what I used to get red fruit punch out of my white carpet <G>  You can get it at WalMart.  I use it on everything now, including laundry stains.  Have gotten rid of almost all the cleaners in the house and use it on everything.  My hubby even uses it on the cars and truck!  GREAT STUFF!

Some who do ops tend to speak faster than lightening sm
I also see it as an excuse for a CYA for them. You have to watch them dictate to appreciate this, there's no need to talk that fast. You almost have to use their boiler plate op as they are unintelligible. They can always say, "That's not what I said." I don't trust those guys. Some ops are great, interesting, some are totally boring and monotonous, all have good and bad points. Psych reports are interesting but if you do them long enough you start to go "batty" - or perhaps it's just me. I like a mix.
I would get off during a lightening storm. My neighbors equipment got fried. sm
my TV volume got fried during a storm. My company has told all of us that if we fry our computers during a storm, we have to replace them. I can't afford that. I wouldn't risk it.

They're all self-explanatory. The English (from England) speak this way. "This young chap was involved in a fisticuff a fortnight ago full stop." You can't really change too much, but what it means is this young man was involved in a fight (or altercation) two weeks ago (period). Jeez! Full stop means period, it gets on your nerves after two pages of it! Type it like he dictates it and add the period after every "full stop." Period.
Wow, we are having one heck of a thunder and lightening storm from the heat, finally started to rain
some.....gonna hit 105 here in VA (near  Richmond)....yikes!  Hope we don't lose power, have 1 stand fan and 1 window fan if power does go (have a generator) but still, way to little for such heat. Our poor AC is gonna blow (along with the electric bill).

the little white piece of paper icon to bring up the window where you ADD your new entries to, type your abbreviation in the Keyword box, then drop down to the Text to Type box and put in what you need it to say, then click Okay. You're done! If you want to delete your entry, arrow down to it, then click on the Trash Can icon. It'll ask if you want to put it on the clipboard, say yes and hit okay. If you want to modify it, use the little hand on the piece of paper icon. I like to click on the Disk icon to save stuff once I enter it, too, as a backup. If you're working and want to enter a paragraph or a page, you'll hightlight your stuff, bring up the ADD window, copy and paste it into the Text to Type area using the commands on the bottom of that box, name it, and hit okay. To use hot keys and stuff, you'll have to read the instructions in the help file. Good luck! ..nm

I LOVE your little icon thingy!

As usual, I am contributing nothing to the conversation, but had to thank you for the smile.

Yes, the icon is in the systems tray. nm

Icon in rt lower screen, by your clock....

Looks like a keyboard and screen, very tiny, set mouse over it and it should say safely remove hardware -- click on it, and it will tell you what peripherals need to be clicked on before removing it.  If your peripheral is a USB and it has been installed before -- no, I don't turn my machine off UNLESS, I need to for it to be recognized -- I have an external hard drive that I have to do that with.

Hope this helps

Are you turning the volume using the home typist icon
or your regular volume control icon on the tool bar?

I have had that problem with some whispering dictators, so I mute the program itself just for that dictator.

It's a shame if you can't use it. I get a real rhythm going and my day just flies. I don't think I can type without it now.
Go to the "My Computer" icon or Windows Explorer (sm)
And click on the C: drive. Should be a folder named InstText. Inside that is a Glossary folder. Either copy the whole folder or go inside and copy the glossaries you want, then copy to your flash drive. Then install Instant Text to the new computer, attach the flash drive and copy the glossary files to C:/InstText on the new computer.

On your start up icon tray (right lower corner) there is
an icon that looks like a green arrow pointing down.  If you click once on that, your transnet status box pops back up.
Thanks Administrator for putting the MQ icon by the recently posted msgs!
Just as I suggested/requested. This really does make this board a lot more manageable.
I went to desktop icon for both DRUG BOOK and STEDMANS. Clicked

How old are your drug book and stedman's?  (I bought mine about 6 years ago now).  I hate to not be able to use them because I have added so much to them through the years.  ugh.

Every program I bring up is Adobe. All my desktop icons were my IT icon.
But to bring one up, it was the Adobe Flashplayer. I have needed a PT job for two months and cannot apply as Vista is not compatible. Also, ExpressScribe is incompatible with Vista so I could not take the tests. OMG, I paid 1600.00 for this (my first laptop Dell 1330 XPS) on 2/19 and have already had to have a system recovery. Now, nothing will upload and I am told my hard drive has the Conficker virus embedded in it; I am waiting for a new hard drive as I type this.

This totally sucks. Vista has rendered my computer useless. Dell does not sell XP anymore and even if I could get XP, it would not work in this particular computer. Dell is being very unreasonable, stating that even though it has been just over 30 days, I am stuck with this Vista and just "deal with it."

I wanted this to be the last computer I ever bought. Now, it appears not to be true.
I use a MSFT Natural keyboard at home and the laptop keyboard on the road. nm

If you use a standard keyboard you can buy an old IBM model M keyboard on ebay or clickykeyboards.co

That key printing never wear down because the letters are part of the key itself.  They just don't make them that way anymore because it is too expensive to make.  Some of the mechanical keyboards like Cherry have what they double shot key imprinting and the letters are part of the key itself and don't wear off. That IBM keyboard is very noisy from the type of keyswitch it has so you may not like that.  Logitech and Belkin make some membrane switch keyboards that are supposed to have longer lasting key imprints.  I have a logitech that has the longer lasting key imprints and it is pretty good.  You have to look on the specs to find out if has the longer lasting key printing.

I have experimented so much with keyboards and have done a lot of research.  Way too much info.

I use a laptop with a full-size keyboard (no separate keyboard)
I'm using a lap desk but previously was using a pillow with a book on it under the laptop. No additional keyboard though, I bought one with a full-sized board with regular size keys (an HP) which I LOVE and it took no time at all to get used to it. I also love that when the weather improves, I can take my computer outside and get some fresh air! What a great job... :)
Well, Word is easy to buy and easy to install. Word 97 works great. Cheap. SM
I still would not work anywhere I could not use a spell checker with grammar checker and a Steadman's Medical Spell Checker.

IF they want people to TRANSCRIBE MEDICAL REPORTS, then I guess they better get the programs they need.

It's like probably 110% easier to buy and install Word 97 than to try to program their own programming. And, yes, I do mean Microsoft Word 97. Why? Because you can install it unlimited times, in case you need to install the operating system again. And it has a few features that Microsoft, in its un-wisdom, took away in Word 2000 and 20003 and 2007. So, yes, I'd go with Word 97 for its cheapness and it works better than the later versions. Just my opinion, with 20 years experience being an MT. So what if they "don't have it" on their computer? It's easy to get.
Keyboard and mouse. Is there such a thing as a keyboard that has a mouse on the actual keyboard?
nm

Easy easy money they are!

I don't mind seeing those puppies filter in at all.  Same for H&Ps.  They are always different though, so can't really pop in the same pre-formatted autotext, but it's usually WHAMMO 2-3 pages at a time.  Give them a shot...you may just be pleasantly surprised!

Has anyone used the Smartboard keyboard? Everyone tell what keyboard they have and rate it nm

Kinesis Keyboard and keyboard tray

Okay, any lefties use this keyboard? How long did it take to get used to? I use my left thumb for the space bar and I notice on a diagram of the keys that I would always be hitting the backspace key.

I'm really interested in getting a better keyboard. I destroyed my left hand and wrist the other week when I fell because I'm becoming a real klutz.

I bought the Soft Flex gloves, but they only help a little bit. My production is down because of it and it's driving me crazy. I can only type an hour without stopping and then have to rest the hand for some time.

I did buy a Microsoft 2000 keyboard but have yet to recieve it. Is this a good one?

Do you use a keyboard tray with it or just set it on the desk? Do you think a kayboard tray would be the least expensive item right now that would help with a straight keyboard?

Any info you can provide to help me in making any decision would be greatfully appreciated.

'Scuse me for being old school, but I've only ever used a straight keyboard.

Does anyone know of a keyboard that has the backspace key in the center of the keyboard? NM

Split keyboard mounted on chair arms versus split keyboard on desk

For longtime comfort which is best - split keyboard mounted on chair arms or split keyboard to be used on the desk?

Also, why the preference over split keyboards that come totally apart versus split keyboards that are permanently connected at the top?

I want to revamp my office and there are so many different options.
