Easy to do when you are doing a limited amount of docs.

Posted By: Not hard to believe. on 2009-03-20
In Reply to: 300 lph is kinda hard to believe, unless she does - nothing but 5-page templates & no actual typing.

I work on 2 accounts with a handful of docs. I have created templates for each one. Each template has approximately 30 lines already transcribed because the docs use the same ROS and PE all the time. In addition, I use IT which does about 50% of my Keystrokes for me. On easy clinic accounts like this with limited docs, 300 is easy.

It is only easy if everything falls into place, i.e. good docs, repetition, macros/expander -sm
This is not the norm. I average 130-175 lph, so it would take me a bit longer than 3 hours to make $100 (I am only PT now so I don't make much more than $50 a day) , and as she would be starting out fresh at a new job, probably with a national doing nothing but ESL the odds are she won't be making $100 in 3 hours.
Does anyone know if there are a limited

My limited experience with DQS
Tech transferred my PRD (expander program) for me. Had to make some changes to
it, but it works just fine. I recommend checking ahead, if possible, about
getting your expander program switched over, so it will be ready to go for you.
My experience and therefore my info to share on DQS is limited, as I was trained
last Apr. but have not made the permanent move over (I'm the one still on INET)
because it is a nightmare to try to use the DQS system on
dial-up, at least for me. High speed not available where I live. Anyway, I will
say this much, the actual transcription part of it, the screen where you type...
that part does seem like an improvement to me. The rest of it though seems so
top heavy with data from other hospitals that I will never need, the ADT
searches are mind numbingly slow... again, on dial-up. On INET, we just type in
pt name in seconds... DQS requires searches for various demographic info; this
is where dial-up fails miserably. I felt training was pretty adequate, and the
manuals they send out are helpful. I hear some MTs do great with it and
production is increased (though it seems not MTs who were on INET before).
Hopefully you have high speed or cable and the transition will be smooth. Know
whatcha mean about dreading/looking forward at same time. I tried to keep an
open mind as best I could. Good luck!
I look but am limited because I only have dial-up - SO I look to see if I can -sm
find something that is a little better than I have now (.09/line without spaces)---would love to find a .09 a line (or .10 of course) that paid spaces had consistent dictators so I could get a good rhythm going. So I look a lot, but cannot apply to many since I don't have high speed internet. I could get satellite of course but many don't want you to have that, so I am kind of limited and always on the lookout for a MTSO that allows/uses dial-up.
I think with just the limited background you have had
probably will need more training to do the 4s. Some folks say they just started in it but places looking for experience, most of them anyway. You might find a place to hire a newbie. The 4s mean everything so you have to be versed on any kind of medical dictation they can throw at you.
May be my limited experience, but
I like the platform. I worked for local doctors in WordPerfect before this, but I have worked in InScribe for two years, through two versions, and beta tested this current version. I like everything about it except for the lousy AutoText. It's too much trouble to enter individual shortcuts....have to save a list of 20 or 30 to make it worth your time to add them. Other than that, I'm satisfied.

New computer - dictionary seems limited

My desktop crashed so I bought a laptop.  The dictionary for the system does not seem to be picking up near the medical terms my desktop did and the new computer has a newer version of MSWord.  Is there anything I can do to expand this?  I have Stedman's but some of the things it is saying I am misspelling are very basic medical terms and I did not have this problem with my old computer.

Do you work more than your 5GM? I just wondered since I am thinking about getting a card. I think Verizon and ATT do the same. My daughter has 5GM on her cable and she went over once, but they did not charge extra.

Thanks a lot.
I agree, especially regarding limited use of expanders...nm

My accounts aren't limited to how much they can dictate...
in one day, so on the "catch-up" days, I work from early morning, sometimes 14-16+ hours to get everything (or most of it) done.  Otherwise, I hear, "Do you need help on that account?  Do you want to share it with someone so you don't get behind?"  Uh huh.  Sure.  I mean, of course.  They haven't dictated in days and decided to slam me all at once, but I'll share and then have days and days of a few hours' work.  Plus, sharing means constantly having to watch the incoming jobs so the other MT doesn't download them all. and leave me with nothing.  Geesh.  Sometimes you just can't win.    My accounts are MY accounts.  If companies would have set guidelines for clients (like don't expect to send 10+ hours of dictation once a week and get it all back in 24 hours), it would work better for both sides.
Prosthetics/orthotics - limited references available

If someone out there has a good web site for this speciality, I'd appreciate it.

The service area is limited, though growing.
I don't know if they are talking about WiFi or an Air Card.   WiFi connectivity is cheap, but unless you live in a large city you'll find limited access.  An Air Card (called different names depending on the company selling them) I then they start at about $249.00 and the fees are pretty hefty.  Not sure how good it works though I've heard people who loved theirs and they traveled a lot and said they never were unable to get a signal.

found a senior citizen on limited income,
word of mouth from someone else who uses her. She charges $10.00 an hour and does EVERYthing - including windows, oven, frig, at least once a month, bathrooms, floors, laundry, changes linens, and all surface areas weekly - all in less than 4 hours for 1600 sq foot condo. You might try posting a note on a senior citizen bulletin board in your area or go to a limited income residental facility and post a note there.

You have a baby, you have limited time to devote to work. sm
This career requires strict, constant concentration. It requires a lot of time to gain knowledge. It's not like stuffing envelopes or making bead necklaces or making telemarketing phone calls. You have to sit at your computer, with no distractions, with ALL of your attention highly focused. The thing is, your baby requires this, too. One of these 2 things will suffer. You wouldn't bring your baby to an office, and trying to do this job with a baby right there is the same thing.

Well, Word is easy to buy and easy to install. Word 97 works great. Cheap. SM
I still would not work anywhere I could not use a spell checker with grammar checker and a Steadman's Medical Spell Checker.

IF they want people to TRANSCRIBE MEDICAL REPORTS, then I guess they better get the programs they need.

It's like probably 110% easier to buy and install Word 97 than to try to program their own programming. And, yes, I do mean Microsoft Word 97. Why? Because you can install it unlimited times, in case you need to install the operating system again. And it has a few features that Microsoft, in its un-wisdom, took away in Word 2000 and 20003 and 2007. So, yes, I'd go with Word 97 for its cheapness and it works better than the later versions. Just my opinion, with 20 years experience being an MT. So what if they "don't have it" on their computer? It's easy to get.
Easy easy money they are!

I don't mind seeing those puppies filter in at all.  Same for H&Ps.  They are always different though, so can't really pop in the same pre-formatted autotext, but it's usually WHAMMO 2-3 pages at a time.  Give them a shot...you may just be pleasantly surprised!

pay amount
I work for them and have for years now. What they do is basically pay how they are paid so we cannot blame them. Basically, the client takes 1/2 of the total lines for the month and pays it on the 15th of the next month and the other half on the next paycheck and so on. I have always been paid my full amount with no problems. To figure out pay, go into the transcription program and look up your lines for the month and divide them in half...very simple really. Again, they have always paid correctly and I have been with them 4.5 years now.
for me it would be the same amount of...
of Keystrokes as I use yo and then the spacebar, which would still be 3 keystrokes. From typing, it is just natural for me to hit the spacebar versus using the ";". Is this what you mean?
amount of RAM

Is there a way to tell if low RAM is slowing things down or if it is just the platform?  I have various problems (aside from several-second delays with certain things) that I think may be due to lack of RAM.

I use a lot of online and computer resources, so I probably need a lot of RAM.

Any way to tell?

wow! do you know if it was a significant amount?

And what would that amount to American?
x
that is if you EARN under a certain amount,
after that you must pay taxes on all. The goverment certainly isn't going to be left out of our money!!
If I could have made even the same amount
someone who lives near me, an ex-MQ'er, who went to work there.  She would never come back.  We worked on the same account, which MQ is losing, expected to go live there before the end of the year.  I wanted to stay with my account, of 7 years, had normals up the wazoo!
Can you rent a car for about the same amount? sm
That way you could come and go as you pleased!
I also make about that amount. sm
I have both a full-time job and a part-time job, and work about 60 hours a week. I don't do five 12-hour days. I work a normal 40-hour week, then for the part-time I scatter my hours in the evening. It works out really well for me and I average about $50,000 a year. For a long time, I was working a regular 40-hour job and only making about $27,000 a year. It's definitely worth the extra time spent. I work while the kids are in school, then I work for a couple hours after they're asleep. I have every Sunday off with them, and they're busy on Saturdays anyway while I'm working, so it works out well for us. You just have to find a schedule that will fit for you, and the most important thing is to find a company or service that will pay you what you're worth. Keep looking... they're out there...
Per page amount
I work as a general transcriptist for an insurance company and I get paid $3.00 a page no matter how long the page. In the area where I live I think $6 would be a lot of money, but if she can get it, that's a great per page amount.
Anyone can type in any amount they wish - sm
on a board like this, and claim it is their income.
I would not quit with just that amount
because I have spent that much over the past several years buying new home, tile for that home, granite, living - have also put money in the bank oh, say around 40,000. I would not retire from a job unless I won something in the range probably of over 10 million, then I might think about it. It sounds like a huge amount but even people who have won the lotteries have come up broke after a few years. You have to take a very tight rein on money like that and not be unwise in spending, otherwise it will be gone before you know it.
They equate to about the same amount of $$. nm
x
Normal amount?
There is no "normal amount" in this field. It's a matter of if your pay works for you and you feel like you are rewarded properly for it.

I would not poo-poo the amount of money
the people are making doing crafts. I have just bought out of state from a lady on Etsy some plates she made. I paid $25.00 for 3 plates and $40.00 for one. I called her on the phone to put in a special order and I asked where did she sell besides Etsy. She tells me there are several events she goes to, usually selling $20 or more a day of at least $20 each and she cannot make them fast enough. The plates are very ornate, beautiful (mine at least because I like the bling and asked for such) so I think if you got enough needing your product, hey don’t think a person cannot make a good living that way. She sells on Etsy plus the events she attends and possibly other ways although we did not get into that. I love crafts and only wish I could make something as beautiful but guess I will just have to stay with what I do best, MTing.
I think I smell either VR on the easy stuff, or offshoring of the easy stuff.

The TC? I've been paying the same amount
for over 4 years. I've never paid any money out whatsoever in over 4 years to work for MQ.

I've also never run out of work. On two occasions, we were running right behind the dictation - very closely - but I still had enough work to get the lines that I WANTED, not just the minimum production.

There may be a day come when I do actually run out. I will deal with that situation then.

I was just asking where you were getting your information because it is is nothing similar to how it works for me.

Good luck.
I was in the same boat until I threw a $ amount at him.

Then he said, "What are you talking to me for? Get back to work!"

want to make a different kind of dessert with them. Every year I always wind up making strawberry shortcake or strawberry ice cream and well those are great but I'm such a creature of habit that I really want to make something completely different. If you have any great ideas, PLEASE let me know!

Thanks!

a normal amount would be allowed I think
not gobs of blanks
For the amount of knowledge this job takes...
The constant demands to do more and more, increased accuracy requirements, I think #4. #2 would be a good entry level wage, but in reality I think most of us are stuck there.
Pay for amount of usage -- might not be bad idea
Phone bills used to be like that, -- shows my age. I say sometimes I think it would be nice that those that use the most pay the most,.  I have my cable TV on at the most 2 hours a day and yet I pay the same as those that watch 14 hours a day.  Just like we get paid on the production of work we do, maybe we need to pay for the amount of usage on certain items.
Agree. There's no way to do triple the amount
of lines on VR to keep your same amount of pay. VR takes too long to correct/edit. This is such a rip-off.
The dollar amount may not have been the point...
but I just find it funny that those who agree all say they are making $25+ an hour. Just wondered if you would still agree with her if you weren't making the money you are making. Many of us do support our family on our wage and there is no way I could do it on $11.50. I make a few dollars more an hour than that and we are still struggling to make ends meet. I guess I was just put off by the judgmental attitude of the OP that if we can't cut it with our current pay that we just need to reevaluate our lifestyle. I live simply, but I live in a high-cost area. There is really no way I could cut back on my costs. So if I ever make less than I am now, I will be forced to look for a new job.
Yes, there seems to be a tremendous amount of damage control on her lately by MQ. What is going on
and they are just as nasty as my office has been becoming lately with everyone worrying about their jobs now that our accounts have been switched to the NE region out of the local office.
On the pay stub it says "DEP adjustment:. So how many of you believe the amount you
