Does PC ShortHand work on Emdat or Word Client?
And if so how do I get it to work when using these platforms?
Emdat Software Question for Emdat Users

Hello:

I have a question about the Emdat software.  Regarding the cc: box, sometimes, you have to type in the address, because the address is not in the database.  I have found that when you try to pause the audio with either the foot pedal or the "F" key assigned to pause while typing the address, the audion will not pause; it keeps on playing.  You should be able to pause the audio while trying to type the address into the database.  Anyone else notice this, anyone?  Thank you kindly.

Shorthand users: Is there a way to type a word, use a slash and then type another word..sm

immediately following the slash and have it expand.  For example if I needed to transcribe mass/sebaceous cyst, is there a way to use my expanded sebaceous cyst without having to back space after I type the slash mark?  TIA

ATTENTION EMDAT USERS!!!...
If you use EMDAT, you may not have to purchase one of the Start Stop pedals that they say you have to.  When you are ready to sign onto InScribe, there is an options box, click on that and hopefully you will see the system that you already have.  If not, I suggest you load express scribe and then you can use it.  Just thought somebody out there would find this info helpful.  Hope it helps someone.
Shorthand users

I'm not sure if this will help you or not but it can't hurt to check.

On the autoreplace options page in ShortHand there's a box called "options" after the line for Use Alt+Ins to add current word to dictionary. Click on the options and make sure there is not a blank space in the keyword suffix box.

It used to make me nuts because every time I created a new shorthand entry it would put a space and . behind it and I had to manually delete them.  I did that for 5 years before someone told me about that suffix box and sure enough the space and period were in there.

Hope this helps.

Shorthand users. Can you tell me how to set up an entry for...sm
today's date and yesterday's date so it will expand correctly?  TIA
Shorthand users - what are your stats?

Hi all.  I was just playing around with my ShortHand program and noticed the stats button and it has been keeping track of my percentage typed and how much time it saves.

It was at 32% that Shorthand typed for me, and it saved me over a year of typing since 2005.  LOL.

I reset it and it was at 42% with just 3 reports.  It will be interesting to see what it will be Monday evening!

Shorthand users - How can I keep headings bolded in PE. I want to make
a shortcut for parts of the PE and headings need to be bolded.  I cut and copied what I want into SH but when it pulls up they are not bold.  TYIA.
Shorthand Users How do you deal with the space automatically put in after a shortcut (sm)
I find this especially annoying at the end of the sentence when I have to backspace to put in a period.  Do you just constantly backspace or do you know how to avoid this without typing in that command {@nospace}for each shortcut?  Sure would appreciate any help.  I am so tired of backspacing.
emdat & shorthand
I've used Emdat & ShortHand together for 4 years. The only problem I have found is that shorthand entries scroll rather than popping into the text, so I use shorthand for short abbreviations and the Emdat Autotext for longer macros such as doctor's normal formats.
Shorthand does not work well with Emdat.

Need to find an Expander that will expand properly in any platform being that the right working situation for me is so hard to find.

Any suggestions?

TIA

A majority of the software used IS Word based, or do you just want to use Word by itself? nm

PC Shorthand...Does it work in Emdat and Chartscript??
If so how do I go about setting up to work?
Yes it is word-based and it is a
terrific program.  I give it 2 thumbs up.

Need help with Word-based expanders ....sm

I am starting with All-Type soon, and the handbook says that their platform works with any Word-based expander.  That's all fine and good, but I have never used one.  I'm a PRD+ girl from the old WP51 days, and currently work in Bayscribe, and the Expander in it is a lot like PRD.  Are any of the Word-based Expanders like that?  I tried Instant Text once and hated it.  I don't want popup windows and such.  I like it to be simple, like PRD ... enter copdd and get chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, etc.  Are any like that?

Thanks for your help!

Winscribe-is this Word based? nm
nm
Yes. I also have shortcuts and it is word based.
This is my Expander I have used for years, and I did not need to have it imported into Bayscribe. It works along with Bayscribe. I do leave the Bayscribe spell check on along with it too and they both work fine together. Hope this helps.
I am using my first Word-based platform and am using autocorrect
to add my short cuts into because my other short cut program is attached to the other platform I use so I cannot use it or convert it.  I am having trouble entering things into and not getting the results I want.  My headings I need bolded and I am not sure if those can be added bolded into short cut or if I have to keep going and bolding them mannually.  Also, I am getting an extra space when I put in "yo" and want it to come out -year-old.  The extra space is between the age number and the first dash (-) in front of year so I have to keep going back and taking it out.  Also, I can't figure out how to Center without having to use the mouse.  If somebody could help me, I would appreciate it.  If anybody out there has a cheat sheet they can e-mail me I would be forever greatful.  THANKS SO MUCH!!!
PRD is a dos-based program, will not work in Word.
It is a great program, wish it would, but you might have to look at something like Shorthand. Same with Stedman's. It is a Windows installation, not a copy/paste like the old dos programs (WP, etc.)
If the platform the company uses is Word-based,
then it's on their end and I don't see how you can change that. If by chance their stuff opens and uses your copy of Word, then you should be able to find Word by clicking the Start button (left bottom corner of screen) choose Programs, then look for Microsoft Office and then choose Microsoft Word. If you have it, then once Word opens, choose Format, then Font, then choose your options there (12 is a decent size for a typical font), click on the Default button and Click Yes to apply to all documents.

If you don't have Microsoft Word on your machine, then it's on their end, and again, you can't do anything about it.

Hope that helps!
I use it to transfer files but I think it is based on Word sm
for typing so you shouldn't have a problem with macros and Expanders as long as they are in Word. As far as the footpedal, I am not sure as I have a USB adaptar from RadioShack converting it to USB instead of serial, but you can download the free trial of DocShuttle and see if it would work.
If it's a Word-based platform, you can move your...sm
entries from Word by going to:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=8842

Use the "AutoCorrect Backup" and save it to your desktop. Then you can run it again to restore it to your Word in the new platform. Hope that helps.
Any Bayscribe users that miss all the goodies in Word - how do you improvise? nm
nm
Shorthand users: When I need to transcribe in all caps and use my caps lock key my abbreviations.sm
are only lower case.  Is there anyway I can use get my abbreviations to expand in upper case?  The only way I can do it now is by holding down my shift key.  Thanks for any help you can offer.
Check out CoPath. It is a word-based system.

Question for all who type on a Word-based platform.
Does anyone else use F3 to go from expansion to expansion?  For instance, I have gent that expands to gentleman, then I hit F3 to go to gentamicin, F3 again to go to Gastroenterology, etc., etc.  My question is this:  I am typing on ExText, and I have been making these entries, but in the morning when I turn the computer on they are all gone and I have to start over again.  In ChartScript they "stick" and in ExText they don't.  Does anyone have any ideas on how to get them to stay?  TIA for any suggestions anyone may have.
The majority of the software proggies are Word based. You
s
Smartype should work in any word based platform - sm
If Emdat is a web based platform, then it won't work. Fighting that (on Chartscript) myself right now and hate it!
Word & Emdat InScribe

Word can be used with Emdat InScribe, but in a limited fashion.  On the InScribe toolbar, there is a WORD icon. When you press that icon, it will open Word (if you have Word XP or higher) and you can type in a bare Word editor.  Your spellchecker will work as normal (if using Stedmans or any other 3rd party spell checker).

The problem with Word is that Emdat strips out many of the formatting that Word creates.  Not all the formatting is stripped out, only the major formatting features such as font size, font color, and fonts.  If you are in Word and setup margins within the document, they will transfer back to InScribe without being stripped and sometimes (not always) cause problems for the person viewing the final transcription.  To avoid this (and use Word), simply don't use ANY word formatting, but instead, just use Word to type.  This will work fine with InScribe.

InScribe 5.0 is Word based.  It is due out later this year (2008) and will replace the existing Editor (where you type now in InScribe) with Word 2003 or higher.

I hope this information helps.  If not, please call us at the Emdat Help Desk at 630-743-0500 x1.

Thanks,

How do you use Emdat's word expander?
I'm not sure how to add entries to it.  Also, can you convert your PC ShortHand to it? Thanks!
Emdat actually does have a Word client in it sm

Most places don't like for you to use it because it screws up the formatting, or at least that is what they say.  I could not get Emdat's Word client to open on it was installed on.

I have a friend who works in it.  She types in Word, pastes in WordPad, back into Word and over to Emdat...copy paste copy paste YIKES.  I may have that wrong and she may work in WordPad, copy to Word, copy back to WordPad and into Emdat, but in any case it is a hassle, but she says it works okay.

copying word into Emdat

You should never copy straight from word into Emdat....you should make you templates in notepad...you can even copy from Word to notepad and then into Emdat...or if you have something saved in Word, you can copy and paste it into you comment box on the Emdat screen and then cut it from there into your Emdat, but if you copy something from Word into Emdat, it will usually mess it up on the client's end (I leaned that the hardway).

I hate Emdat too...especially the spellchecker, and you just can't do as much with it as you can in word...I copy all my completed transcription into Word to double check it with the Word spellchecker to make sure it caught everything, which it usually doesn't.

I hope this is helpful and made sense, but it is a crapy plantform for transcriptionists, but it must be beneficial for the doctors end, otherwise, I'm not sure why it's even used!

Instant Text claims compatibility with all word-based programs
I have used it with Word, PowerScribe, ExText, and a program based on MS Office online, the name of which escapes me. Works great.
Emdat/Incribe with Word/Stedmans
I would like to know if anyone who types in this program is able to use the Microsoft Word option and Stedman's Spellcheck.  That is, without copying and pasting.
Is there a way to import autocorrect from Word to EMDAT?
I would still have to redo a bunch because they start with . but it would speed things up a bit!  Any tips for EMDAT appreciated.
is every word you have in shorthand like that?
nm
Line-based vs. hour-based requirement
Hospitals do have an hourly requirement, and generally incentive after a certain line level. MQ only has a line based requirement, which is 12,000 per pay period. The hourly requirement is strange, unless they now plan to convert to an hourly pay plan?
Does anyone how to enter a new word into shorthand sm

without using the mouse?  I clicked on

add new entry  (still trying to figure out what the 'key' is that opens this so I don't have to use the mouse)

keyword/text to type/ and then there is an okay butten.  I am use to doing this same operation in autocorrect but without using the mouse (where i use the tab and enter key once I program it.) .  The O on the okay button is underlined but I can't seem to use the alt/o to have the program OKAY my new entry.  I am trying to read this help guide and I am really struggling.  I wish someone could write instructions that weren't in computer languange.  sigh.  Thanks once again

Shorthand word expander -
Tech board is down.  Need to know how to stop word from expanding.  Any info would be appreciated.  Thanks
Shorthand ? When I type the word I the

first letter in the next word is capped.   There is no period so don't know why it caps.  Anyone know how to fix it. I'm new to ShortHand and I really HATE it.   My company offers a short class in it, but they want me to have more experience with it before I take the class.

Word shortcuts to Shorthand -

I'm dreading if I need to start some 13 or 14,000 abbreviations all over again on another expander.  All you do is go in and out of a new Expander putting all your abbreviations in when you could be making money already.

Know what I mean?
