That generation sure did have some hard times, and it seems to have
My brother and family moved into my mom's home when she became ill for the final time, but she had so much stuff there were only aisles from room to room, otherwise there was floor to ceiling STUFF that she couldn't part with, that she was sure she would need someday. I'm sure there was some kind of mental problem there. My brother and wife took over a dozen 2-ton wagons of junk out to the back 40, and filled in a wash with all the stuff, burned some, let nature take its course with the rest. I guess she had lived without material possessions for so long, that she held on to what she had, for a long, LONG time.
In these hard economic times...
Try the local pawn shop. We browse pawn shops every once in a while. It's amazing what you'll find there for a great price. I got my hubby a brand-spanking new, never out of the box, top of the line laptop for $200.

As for what kind...I've been a HP customer for my last 3 systems but these days you can get a really decent system at walmart that has XP or Vista with MS Office Suite for less than $500. Even though Vista is pretty to look at, personally I wouldn't go with Vista because so many companies still aren't compatible with it and you never know when you'll be changing MT platforms(this happens A LOT for ICs). I'm sticking with XP for as long as possible or until Windows7 comes out. Too bad more companies aren't utlizing Linux-based OS.
I did finish the test
I did finish the test, over the weekend.  Then Monday had my interview.  Then Tuesday was told I got the job if I wanted it.  The next day I called and said I'd take it.  She said great!  I'll have management get with you to arrange delivery of your equipment and everything.  I took the job resigned from my job.  The she called back 15 minutes later and said I couldn't have the position we discussed.  I think its time to get in another line of work possibly.  This one can really ruin your self esteem.

Check out Tatouage on HSN.com or ebay - these are rub-on transfers of different scenes that can be painted over when the time comes. Go on very smooth and look like paint. They are very detailed and look so real, but can be wiped off when necessary without damage. They are great and take a lot less time than painting.

in the future of all medical personnel from MT to MD. Looking at the whole picture, those of us from the baby boomer age are pushing 50 and as families, many of us had 3 or fewer children or none at all. So, in my opinion, that leaves a much smaller volume medical personnel to care for the aging in the future. So, finish that course so you can type my reports when I need them.
Definitely finish with blanks. nm

No way will she finish that course in four months.
Especially with all those kids, she probably won't even finish it at all. It's obvious she's not going to listen to anything you say, so she'll have to learn the hard way.

(If you want to be mean, wait about four months and then ask her for a loan, since she's rolling in the dough!)

The BBB is not as strong as some like to believe
Companies join it if they wish - it is not a requirement - if you are a member and someone complains then they might get involved if it is something they can do - but I seriously doubt they would get involved in $$$ issues.  As far as I know - if your business is a member they make record of the complaint and whether or not the issue was resolved..... I would file a claim in Small Claims Court for the amount owed you by this company.

And we were supposed to finish school and work FT (sm)

after being offered a job making $25/hr. with full benefits and supposedly a future?  And now we're supposed to go back to school at 50 y/o because of this govt?  Are you with the illuminati or what?

This happens to be 2006.  There are many, many people who did not finish school because they were offered jobs that paid quite well.  Unfortunately, those jobs are now being given to illegals, etc., remember "the jobs that Americans won't do?"

I won't be going back to school, I made enough money.

Do you relisten to your entire reports after you finish each one or how do you
edit your work before you send it in.  Do you reread each one.  Sometimes I think you can miss a word if you dont but not sure how to edit before sending without making minimum wage.
I leave a blank and finish the report. - (sm)
Sometimes (if I'm lucky), the doctor will say the same word again later in the report, only clearer.

Even if they don't say the word again, often once I've finished the whole report and am proofreading, if I listen to the word a while later, I can then understand it.

The post below that talks about reading the sentence out loud in that accent is also a good idea that sometimes works for me, too.

If the sentence is a fairly common one you might encounter in other similar reports (like in a physical exam, or a hernia operation, etc.), sometimes finding a few samples of those types of reports online can provide an answer, even if it's a different doctor.

If you have the capability to put that report on 'hold', and go on to the next one, that's also helpful, because you might get the same word again in the next report (especially if it's the same doctor), and you might be able to hear it, then. Even if you don't, setting it aside for a while and then going back to re-listen to it is often the most effective way to unravel some of the 'mystery-words'.
Thanks for the encouragement!
I really appreciate it. How long have you been with MDI-MD?

How long did it take you to get up to speed with all the reading and the tech stuff?
Thank you so much for the encouragement -
I have also started back on taking vitamins, calcium, and fish oil (the fish oil was recommended at my last physical for women in general to help prevent heart disease.) I am glad I am off of the Vicodin. I was afraid I was going to end up on Oprah.
Thanks for the encouragement

I had the feeling that I'd never learn these particular doctors... for one thing, the dictation was not clear and sounded like he was in a bucket or something.. Had that quality about it that makes me not be able to catch things. I was almost in tears, not to mention blowing my line count. I even had a sample to go by, but still couldn't understand. You know, if you can't hear it, you certainly can't transcribe it... sounded like Charlie Brown's teacher, only in another language! LOL!  Again, thanks.

I worked in a major medical center for 19 years and thought I worked with the most miserable people on earth.  Although sometimes a little lonely, my favorite part about working at home was not having to listen to miserable people gripe all day.  I wish there were more of you coming up - then maybe we would never have gotten into this India mess.  When I first started doing this I was like someone newly in love. I was so happy.  Everyone wanted to do what I do.  I am stunned at the way people talk to each other on the boards.  Scary.  Anyway, I really hope this profession holds out for all of us for quite a while longer.  Some people are better brand new than others who have been at it a long time.  Maybe you'll get the chance to prove that.
Thank you for the encouragement
Thank you so much for replying.  I am glad to hear your son is doing okay (besides the surgery).  It's really encouraging to hear other MTs going through the same things with these MTSOs.  I am so glad to hear that you were not treated this way by your current MTSO and that you were actually shown compassion!
Thanks for the encouragement

I feel like there is no where to go but on my own for the best money, my current service has gotten real strange on me all of a sudden and with 24 years of experience, there is nothing I cannot transcribe accurately when spoken reasonbly well.  I am not the sole wage owner at this point, am I just want this as an option, I work backup for 2 services.  Sorry about your mom's loss, I lost my grandma this year on my birthday, that is when my other service decided to make me prn.  I have my mom with me too and I had to do part of the euology, host the repast, etc.  because of the time I took off, they basically fired me

Thanks everyone for the encouragement....
Leaving my husband would be a hasty and impulsive move. It is so easy to just "jump ship" when the going gets rough. I am inclined to believe that this too shall pass. Thanks a million girls.

Do you find coding harder than transcription and are you paid by production/lines like transcription?

thank you for your encouragement -
When I labeled my original post as "challenge", I really meant for each person to challenge themselves to work smarter - it was not a threat or challenge to other MTs to beat me...

I agree with you though that people do not treat this most times as a real job and they think you can do whatever you want to and still make money at it. It is just like every other job, you have to work...

Now whether you work it smart or not is up to each individual MT...
Really need encouragement. sm
Started a new job, new platform, new acct. specs, new everything and very discouraged.  I've always maintained a minimum of 200 lph average, sometimes lower due to a difficult report once but made up with higher lineage the next.  Even starting on a new job.  Now I'm doing half of that at best and I don't feel like I've slowed that much.  I don't know what is so wrong.  I'm trying to get as much saved into my IT so I know that takes time but I've always done this starting new accts with new docs and it has never held me back so much.  I really need this job for the schedule and the benes but now I wonder how much is it worth when I'm making the same pay as I was making working pt at my last jobs? The people I've talked to say this is normal but it isn't normal for me, not over the past 10+ years, and that I'll pick up.  I just don't see how it will double, which is what it really needs to do.  I'm not a newbie but I'm making newbie mistakes because of my frustration and having to take the time to go back and fix these mistakes with formating, etc is just very discouraging.
need encouragement
I know what you mean. Same with the job I have now - same company, but less lines for same work about 50 to 60% less. Maybe you can make up "dummy report" with headings to store in your ShortHand or whatever you use, and then you can take out and leave in if necessary. That helps a lot, but takes time in the beginning. I hope this helps. You can do it I am sure. Many of the others make almost as much as before. I am old and do not want to push myself that hard. I have only one doc. Eveyone says he is the hardest even the company I work for, but won't give me a raise. HA! Good luck. Hand in there. You can always leave if you have to.

Encouragement

Since there have been so many changes in MQ, I am the same way on accounts I am unfamiliar with.  I notice how quickly I can type even difficult reports on my primary, and then even when I get an easy dictator on the other accounts, I still am not do not do as well.

You will get better as times go on.  You are just nervous and understandably want to do well.  I bet in a few more months, you will feel right at home and doing just as well as you wanted.

I wish you well in your new job.

How strong is your ESL experience?
At least, in my area. But ESL? I don't care for ESL and I know I could not type ESL day in and day out. Something to think about??!
Be strong, but be careful. sm

He sounds like the type that knows better than to come to your house and violate a protection order, but you never, ever know and it's still early yet. Keep your doors locked.

My ex was "pre-protection order"  (i.e. many years back) and he got through the basement window and was sitting at my kitchen table in the pitch dark. I can still hear him sneer, "Did you have fun with your boyfriend?"

I was grocery shopping and my mother was watching the kids. I got lucky because he really didn't want to kill me, just control me.

He finally gave up on me when I found and eventually  married  a great guy that doesn't expect me to fold towels in high heels and "poofy hair".

Sad part of that story is that he also disowned his own kids. But, after 15 years, the kids have realized that it was neither my fault or theirs. Their "father" lives with me. Their "donor dad" is living 5 miles away, a recluse, and drinking himself to death.

I send him a case of vodka on his birthday every year. Just kidding!

Keep strong. You can do this. Now, about the satellite,

you can move it with you.  If you move to a place where it isn't available, you're out of the contract easily.  My son actually moved to a place where when they tried to set the satellite they found that the neighbor's trees were an obstruction and you're obviously not going to ask a new neighbor to cut down or even into trees, so they let him off the hook, no problem.  The phone company should not be a problem as long as you're moving, again you can just move it with you, unless you're moving a long distance and then you'll just cancel this one and get another wherever you move to.

I do think you need to keep this in perspective with your kids.  They are losing their daddy (almost like he died to them) whether they feel good about it right now or not.  It really couldn't hurt for all of you to get into counseling.  Eventually it will be a problem for your kids when they "miss daddy" and they "forget" (and they will since they are of young age) how bad things were when you were together.  Of course, this is JMO and others might see things differently.

You can do it, we'll all pulling for you and saying prayers for you and your children.

Stay strong!!
I started my son in preschool and he got so sick, that I decided to keep him home with me. I've been a Transcriptionist since before he was born and I figure I could teach him myself. I sent to the local educational store and got a few things. This worked out fine for the both of us. He became healthy and stayed healthy. I know you stated you didn't think you could do this but it's not that hard. On the other hand, when my son did start school I kept a close eye on his teachers. There was one teacher where him and her just didn't get along. He would come home totally unhappy almost every day of the week. I gave it about three weeks, then decided I would get him changed to another teacher. This worked perfectly. He is now in 4th grade and has been getting either honor roll or principal's honor roll every since. You are the master of your child's future, not the teachers. They are human and a few of them will not click with your child. I taught my son until he could start kindergarten. When he started kindergarten, on his first day he came home and stated "Mom I knew all the work in school. I did it all and it was easy." That was my shinning moment in life. Always remember you are the mother of your daughter and you have to make decisions for her, even though some people will tell you different. Your child's education is in your hands, not the teacher's. Now days we have too many children growing up too fast, especially the girls. She sounds like a real sweet child and is doing appropriate things for her age. One more note, every though you don't think you can teach her, you can. It is so much easier than you think. Even if you just get something for her to write her ABC's and her name would be a real plus. You can search online for things to give your daughter to do at home in her spare time. If she gets tired easily when writing then you can help her by giving her extra at home, just 30 minutes or less everyday to do. She will do just fine and will show that teacher one day that not only was she ready for school but look how far she has gone. STAY STRONG MOM, MANY PEOPLE HAVE BEEN THERE AND SURVIVED. YOU WILL TOO! Hugs to the both of you!!
yep!! VERY strong in numbers!!! nm

Wall painting faux finish techniques sm
Has anyone ever done their walls in a faux finish technique?  I have a rather large room inhabited by my husband and the 2 dogs in the evening while I work, a big screen t.v., a beige fireplace, beige and hunter green wood look vinyl tile on the floor and hunter green furniture. One wall is paneled in a pecan paneling as it couldn't be done any other way. This room was an add on to the house. Right now the walls are a gray color but am looking to paint it something different, something that might not show the splotches caused by the dogs shaking their wet fur on occasion and fingerprints around the switches.  I found the softly aged walls technique on the HGTV web site were you use 2 colors and a divided roller and divided pan. I kind of like the look and it looks fairly easy for me to do.  Anyone have any ideas?
So, you think it is okay for hard-working MTs to earn 7-8 cpl for their hard work?? nm
:{
Also... to add one thing to that, for encouragement

I used to frequently get discouraged about the pay I was(n't) making, until I started looking at it from a different perspective, and it has helped me double my paychecks.

I think of all the positions I have worked in in the past, where I was grossly overworked and underpaid, and I would have given an arm for the opportunity to be paid more based on how hard I worked, and how much I focused.  Of course, in salaried jobs, you can work until you are blue in the face, and generally, you'll make as much as you will on a day where you just can't get moving.  Since I've always worked hard, I try to think of being paid on production as a positive thing.  I am in control of my income.  If I really work and focus, I can reward myself by having higher paychecks.  When all is said and done, if I'm not making the money I'd like to, it's no one's fault but my own.  The good thing is, I don't have to wait to find a better job or wait for my boss to notice me to change that.  I just buckle down and set some goals, and get there myself!

Also, thanks for the half-goal idea.  When I notice my numbers slipping, I use a "Power Hour" where I have to get the highest number I know I am capable of.  I keep making myself do those, until I hit that high number, and then I can go get coffee or switch the laundry or whatever.  Even when I don't hit that number for 2 or 3 tries, I've increased my production over those hours I was trying, so it helps quickly bring my numbers up.

Now, speaking of that... I've gotta go do one.   Thanks again for the tips and encouragement.

Thanks so much for the words of encouragement!!
I am going to take the job. I don't feel comfortable saying how much per line, but I am very excited to start.
Thanks for the encouragement and advice
nm
Love the encouragement. I need it!
Thanks for all the stories and encouragement. I have an Associate Degree (just in general studies) and I had my CNA license about 12 years ago. I worked in a nursing home/rehab facility for approximately a year. I am more interested in going back for a pharmacy degree of physical therapy, but I am just so hesitant because it will be extremely hard for me to put my full effort into school right now and continue working and trying to keep a relatively together house.

My husband does help at home but my son has always had me here and is reluctant to think mommy might be away or busy more than I am here for him. I feel I am stretched to the limit now.

I would love to go back to school. I am just afraid it will be too disruptive in our lives right now. Sometimes I think I am getting to comfortable at home and I know burnout is setting in. There are days now I have to force myself to sit down at the computer and work.

Well, off to the next report.
Looking for a website for encouragement
to help me get out of a rut and pick myself up.  I'm overwhelmed with house repairs, a cluttered house, work, not having enough "adult" time, needing to exercise and eat better and just can't seem to make myself do it, at least not for more than a day or two.   I don't feel I'm am depressed, just overwhelmed, but I find I'm not getting out of my jammies into late in the day if at all, I might not brush my hair all day, etc.   I know I have to do something now and just would like to exchange with others who are/have been in this situation.   Maybe another MT would understand more than non-MTs, but I'm not necessarily looking for other MTs, just a site in general and I haven't a clue how to search for this.
