you said north and south (I think that is what you said), she was probably thinking right or left in her head, as many people will ask for directions in that manner. (Our brains tend to fill in a lot of stuff on their own ... not necessarily what is actually being heard or seen.)
I also agree with the others who said it does not mean a person is stupid if they don't know directions. We all have our dumb areas (at least to some degree).
You say you were amused, but your original note sounded like more of a hit to me.
I am good with directions but doing math is like writing with the wrong hand. :~}
