Are you a bad MT with lousy quality work?
My calls are answered immediately, i've been on the same account for years, i'm praised for my work, receive emails thanking me.  Maybe its YOU and not THEM?
At Wal-Mart here, they start at 6.00 dollars an hour.

To start expect to make about $6 an hour - sm
If you are good, meaning not having to look up a billion things and a quick and accurate typist then you can make more, $16+ depending on the type of work you do. I am not a fast typist, though I do not have to look up much (except for address which slows me WAAAAAAY down), and I currently make about $12 an hour with 4 years experience. So this is no huge money maker. As you are only looking to supplement, you could probably expect to make an extra $30 a week to start, presuming you can find someone to take you on for so litte work. In time you may get that up to $60 a week, but still it is not a fortune.
for the Lafayette area, you should be able to start around $12-13/hour depending
on the amount of expeience you have. But generally, Lafayette starts around $13/hour. Again, not a bad rate of pay to start for that area!!!
can you start out at $11.50/hour at a fast food place?

steady work...gearing up to start new account....but there was no work on Tues as it was a holiday
Be patient with your eyes open....
Work for 1 hour, then count your lines of the completed work - sm
either check you total characters in word (with spaces) then total them all up and divide by 65, and you get your total lines per hour. 10,000/65 is 153 lines. Or if you have a line counting program us that to figure you count, either way will work quite well. Maybe do it a few times and then figure an average over 3 hours or something like that, it will vary with the ease/difficulty of the work you are doing.
So it's time we all start doing our own work (sm)

We cannot afford a middleman anymore.

If you think that's bad, try living on the 7-8 cents a line and still having the expenses of paying for equipment, etc.

Time to just find your own accounts, folks.

I can start with the company I work for.
I won't name names, of course, but I do know that almost half of their MTs are foreign - I know this because I used to QA their work. This company is a small, family-owned company - maybe 150 MTs, so if even half of the larger companies offshore that much, that's a pretty significant number.

As far as how to make a reporter find out the actual number, I think the main idea behind the letter should be to get the information out there that offshoring exsists with companies other than computer technology and call centers. If more people knew that their medical records were being sent out of the country, they might pressure their mayors or governors or congressmen to find out exactly how much of this is going on.

It could work like the ripple on a pond from throwing in a stone - all we have to do is throw the stone and see what happens.
Can't find work...should I start a business?
I am about to finish up my certification at a local college and have been extremely disappointed to find that it seems no one is going to hire me to work for a company because I don't have 2+ years experience....even though I've spent the last 2 years transcribing school work....I am trying to decide if I'd just be better off to take what I've learned and try to start my own business.  Financially, I am able to do it, but I'm just not sure how much of a headache it might be.  What should I do?  I kind of feel like I've wasted a lot of time and money.  I'm pretty confident that I can do the work, but how can you prove that to someone who just wants to know if you have experience?  I just don't know what to do.
Would you do all that work for 12.50 an hour?

Off hour work shift
"posted by wouldn't have it any other way". Thank you so much for your post! I work a similar shift for similar reasons. I don't start until 8 p.m. most nights so like you my kids are in bed before I head off to work and I don't feel gulity taking time away from them. I do work one long day on Sunday to catch up, but I start at noon so we are all still able to attend church together and my husband usually plans a daddy fun day with them that afternoon. I WISH I had done this when my kids were even smaller as I breast fed and still worked off hours so I didn't have then in daycare, but I had to pump at work and my husband had to give them bottles when I was gone.

I agree it can be tiring, but you get in a routine, and honestly do you know any mom stay-at-home or out-of-the-house worker who isn't tired?

Being there 24x7 for your kids that is dedication! :)
Off hour work shift
I should probably add that while I am working I am dedicated 100% as my office is downstairs and I work with my door closed and locked. My husband is upstairs with the children and gets up with them if they get up before I am done with my shift. So, I don't feel guilty neglecting work either because I don't. :)
If MTs want to work 10+ hour days
...more power to them.  Not me - I'm gettin' tired of this.  They're lucky if they get 6 hours out of me.  I worked 10+ hours a day and weekends when I first started.  Now, I could care less.  I may not perform 1200+ lines a day, but I have excellent QA.
I work 4 ten-hour shifts...

Sat thru Tues. My DH is on a rotating 12-hour 3 on/4 off shift and we have at least 2 days off together. I love it; I start at 4 am but I am done at 230 and have all day to do what I want and rarely run out of work.

I think it's better to work by the hour than the line.
By-the-line SOUNDS good, but there's no control over what accounts you'll get, or how accurate the line-counting software they have is, etc. You may start out on an easy account, but as you pick up speed on it and start to make money, they'll switch you to a harder one. And when you pick up speed on that one, you'll get another harder one. And so on and so on. Benefits probably won't be as good at home, either. The only thing that's better about home is not having to deal face-to-face with management. But at least you have the security of knowing your paycheck is going to be the same each time, and won't dwindle down to less-than-nothing if you have a bad day, or a bunch of bad dictators, or no work. And you mentioned a RAISE. That's something most of at-home people will never see in our careers with any company. The only way we seem to be able increase the cpl is if we change companies. But then you still end up on that treadmill of being given work that you may do well, but you can't make money doing. They get ya coming and going.
Delete your voice files at the end of your shift or before you start work again. No

Maybe all this hiring with no work has something to do with the proposed 1 hour TAT?
Wasn't that kind of TAT mentioned in a company email?
That was my point. There will never be any steady work for anyone with TAT at 1 hour
I'm certainly not going to be sitting at the computer 24/7 waiting for reports to trickle in. We are so stupid to be putting up with this. Why do we stay?
Why do you say $20/hr? I work for a national, and at 11 cpl, 300 lines per hour, sm

that's $33/hour.  I'm not driving a Lexus or anything, but I'm comfortable.  Generally speaking, find a mid-sized national, big enough to have enough work for you all of the time, yet small enough to care and realize that quality work deserves quality pay.

They are out there.  Good luck!

Hired to work 40 hour week, 9-5 and then...
Then your computer goes down or you have a doctor's appt or a responsibility taking you away from the keyboard. The other two MTs on your acct have to work like crazy to keep up with a 3 MT work load and they do so like champs. Then, back you come and grab work off your schedule. This means the two MTs who covered you while you were off are not going to be compensated for working strenuously but instead, end up sharing their shifts work with you.

This is soooo frustrating.
Nationals with 10- to 12-hour window to work 8 hrs?

I did a search in the archives, but the info I found was a little outdated. Thanks for any help you can provide.

6-hour day, weekend work by choice, sm
optional access to group health ins even if I have to pay total premium, a company that understands what "IC" really means, a company that refuses to offshore US transcription, pay by gross line, pay based on quality and experience and no less than 9 cpl, but most of all,
CLEAR DICTATION!!

Can I ask where you work that pays editors per hour?
I have been editing for about 2 months now and have 7 years as a MT.  I am still working as a MT along with my new editor's position.  The company I am working for only pays by the line, so if you don't produce you get very little pay.
$18 an hour but I work inhouse in a hospital.
nm
No. I work four 10-hour days. I'm really fast, really
occasions, about every other month, I might do 8-10 hours overtime.

10K for 12 hour weekends, work privately

I have a 10-hour window to work 8 hours
and that works fine for me.
I will not put up with lousy
accounts solely to profit the MTSO and doctors. The bottom line is if they can't provide me with profitable accounts, I'm outta there. I am so tired of being given the ESL and rambling dictators just because "nobody else can do them." TOUGH! Why should I make peanut wages doing the tough work because other people can't hack it?
Even if they pass, how can they do the work? They will make pennies an hour and
zzzzzz
You cant have a 1 hour TAT and MTs have work. They are completely nuts. We are being used and abused
:
$25.00 per hour is more like it. I work now at per report and 14.5 cents per line
and average $30-42.00 per hour
This is not possible. You'd have to average 300 lph and work a 12 hour day. This person is stre

What do you consider a fair per audio hour rate for MT work?

I am only accustomed to the per word rate in MT, but I know that the GT companies prefer the PAH rate.

I was wondering if any MT companies do use the PAH rate and what would be a fair price if there are indeed any companies using this method.

Ever think that maybe 15% is going to QA because of LOUSY DICTATION? nm

I must have a really lousy account.
I can do anywhere from 100-150 lines per hour at my job WITH an expander.  I rarely have to look anything up, except for patient information and addresses, which is time consuming and really annoying.  The work is not difficult at all, but needs to be "cleaned up".  However, I felt completely inadequate seeing my crummy production rate.  That is, until I figured out my lines per hour with my small IC account.  210 lines per hour WITHOUT an expander.  And this guy pays me by the gross page.  Imagine what I could do for him WITH my expander.  Hmmm....  Gonna have to think about what I'm going to do here to even out this production disparity.  I wish I could find another job like this guy.
Not a lousy reason!!!!
since it only takes a course that you can take on-line!!!
I can't believe what a lousy attitude this MT has
That certainly isn't the way to get a better raise next time.  If I were in your position, I would start training someone else for this job. When that person is up to speed, sayonara, Ms. Bad Attitude.
Lousy dictators
Hospitals and clinics have no policy or rules against speaking to a physician about his lousy dictating habits; however, they just dread the situation. I've been there and done that.

For those working within the hospital, you usually know which docs you can and can't speak to about this. Seems their egos are so fragile they might bruise, but really, who cares? We are talking patient care, which is what all of this is supposed to be about, right?

MR directors are usually the ones put in charge of "talking" to them or transcription supervisors but it all depends on the doc. Some are open to suggestions and really don't realize they sound so pathetic. Others know and just simply don't care...like I said before; they think they are gods and no one should dare approach them and even if you do, they then make snide comments while dictating and I have seen them get even lousier with their dictation....which says what about them? They DO NOT care about the patients, just themselves....
How about fine for lousy .... SM

dictations?   It costs us time and money with every ..uh ... aah ... ug..."The patient ..(shuffles paper) ... is a ... no, this is the wrong chart" . ... zzzzzzzzzzz ..

"Okay, let's start again", please go back up to the top ....  "Please delete that first paragraph " ... hiccough ..... aaaach ....   Uh .....  ...hmmm ... let's see...

i think anywhere from 14 to 20 an hour depending on hours worked, kind of work, etc.
nm
I do radiology now, paid by the hour, work from home, can it get any easier than that?

lousy accounts/dictators
I also lost my best & longest account because the hospital did not renew their contract...so ok, took the bait about a new account with great dictators, their biggest unbreakable rule is it is VERBATIM all the way, don't clean up the doc, etc.
Have the nicest sounding, very polite, all american dictator who can not keep his concentration or needs to go to MT school, I swear. I actually typed the report verbatim...then counted all the Patient's, patient...both billaterally...15, count them,15 times throughout the report!!! If I could have put in the ummms, and ugh's, I would have made my line count just on his dictation alone
No...not Mass....but QA is pretty lousy
this isn't the first time I've had trouble with them.
If you're lousy at speaking up for yourself,

It sounds awful, I know.  But you've just got to TRY to get past that uncomfortableness!  If you don't speak up for yourself, no one else will.  Don't sign that contract.  Call them up and tell them you need to raise your line rate.  Raise it a reasonable amount, and stick to your guns!  I know it's scary, but there are a lot of places out there hiring if your current place is going to walk all over you.  Good luck!

Lets hope it is not geared line count per hour the way we run out of work and are in so many
other accounts all the time. Boy that would be bad.
My point is, work a NORMAL EIGHT HOUR SHIFT..dont worry
It takes away from the quality and the turnaround time...
RE: I totally agree!! I work at home can came make upwards or $25+ per hour (sm)
Where outside of my home could I make that money, not have to pay gas, buy extra clothes, etc.  I am very happy right where I'm at.
