FTP

"FTP" means "file transfer protocol" and it is a means of getting files from your computer to somewhere else; either someone else's computer or a server (storage with an IP address). A good direct connection (completely secure, files can be of any size - great for voice files) is DropChute Pro - but it's a little pricey & only would be a good investment if you think you will get more clients. Also YOU will be the "server" for those voice files, which can be huge, depending on the format & how many you will have at any given time, so you will have to have a lot of room on your hard drive, or I would suggest getting an external drive like the new terabyte (1000 GB) drives.

Another option would be to pay for storage somewhere else. There is no up-front cost, such as you would have with DropChute or a similar product (around $200), but you would pay a monthly fee depending on how much storage space you will be using. The best one I've seen is mydocsonline -- especially since the doc you would be transcribing for already has the ability to convert to digital & you wouldn't need a call-in system. This is a system where you & the doc are both able to access an online "file cabinet." The doc has a password. You can get the voice files from there one or a few at a time (so you don't have to have as much storage on your home computer) and the transmission of the files is encrypted and secure. You can upload the files & the doc can get them at her/his leisure.

Windows has built-in transfer capability but it is not secure unless you make it so. Same with GearPlayer. You can use an encryption program (winzip pro or MEP or something similar) & send via e-mail attachment, but even with compression this probably would not work for .wav files.

Hope this helps.
