Picked up tapes for years for a clinic. Finally splurged
Drs wanted to try the phone system so I found a used one and it's much easier. Still drop off printed reports but have dictation instantly, especially nice for stat reports. Don't have to wait to pick up tapes anymore. I could see some of my older clients never moving away from tapes, but if you have one that's receptive to it, you might give it a shot. With gas prices now, it's easier to have a few scheduled dropoff days a week and you can always fax urgent documents to staff. I find that the local drs are usually quite loyal to good MTs so that is nice job security. They like the personal touch from someone they trust, not some big chain. My clients even offered to pay for phone system but I bought it so I could write it off.
Not Silent Type! Less than $1.75/page and you go to NJ to train. nm

Speaking of tapes, I used to type for a doctor
that dictated from home every night. He had a 6 year old little girl whom I had met before, and on every tape when he finished, she would sing me a song and say Goodnight.... She was so sweet, and so was he. When he moved away, he gave me a 5000 check as a gift. Some docs can be wonderful.
They train online, right? That means they train

Well you know what? Maybe they should care! maybe we seasoned MTs actually need something to
distinguish us from those who either aren't really good MTs. This could give a lot of us a sense of real accomplishment to be not just an MT, but an RMT. I think it would be great. I would go for it. I mean, come on, isn't that was credentials are all about nowadays? To SHOW everyone just how important you are? Hey, why can't our field have one??? I like this idea much better than CMT!!!!!!!!
Speak for yourself. This seasoned MT can't do

    Question for seasoned ER MTs....sm
I am very curious to know if those who have been doing ER work for a few years usually find a summer slow-down occurs at some point, in terms of work volume.  I'm on my first ER account, busy as a bee for months, but for over a month now the work has dwindled down to a trickle.  Have heard it's a seasonal low, but find it hard to believe it goes this low!  And if it true, please tell me it could pick up soon!    Thanks for sharing your experience.
Need some advice from some seasoned MT's!!
Can someone PLEASE give some tips or advice:  I have been testing with companies, but every dictator they throw out there is an ESL dictator and my ear is not as trained as I need it to be.  I really want to get better at typing ESLs and have been transcribing for 1 1/2 years.  Problem is, I am just missing so much of the dictation I don't even want to send it in.  Does anyone with a trained ear have any tips???
Oh please -- the recipe for the seasoned taters?!
    .
any seasoned MT can do 2000 lpd no problem.

I had training. I was trained by seasoned MTs who knew what they were doing. nm
All training does not have to be in the form of formal education. I didn't just decide to do this as a lark. This is my profession. Those ladies took me in hand and trained me well. I just had the basic terminology that I needed and they taught me the correct way of transcribing reports.

We have a lot of seasoned MTs interested; it is the newbie crowd that wants to be
at home only. I have to admit that was the biggest shock to all of us that are working on the set up of this. There are a lot of experienced MTs that like the socialization and structure of working in an office or hospital, as long as the pay, benefits and conditions are good. We are going to make it as close to (or better) working in a hospital so that it is appealing to all.
Oh and FYI, there are a LOT more quality-driven newbies, than seasoned MTs!
    Just my opinion!
After about age 35-40 everything's picked over anyway.
    All that's left are:

    1. Some loser that his wife threw out. If someone else didn't want him, there had to be a good reason. I don't either.

    2. Some mommy's boy who's lived at home decades beyond what is appropriate. Total head-case here. Cheap, immature, incapable of making a decision without Mom's involvement and approval. No thanks.

    3. The fat, the bald, the lazy, the angry and anything else that the rest of the female population considers undesirable.

If you're over 40, get a pet. They love you nomatter what, they're always happy to see you and they're not in need of therapy and/or medication.
it can be picked up and what you are
transmitting or receiving can be monitored by others. hipaa, you know.
They could have at least picked a guy with
nice white teeth, not yellow! Yuck!
eat them now, they were picked eons ago.
    why wait?
    She picked Steve.
    xx
You know, she could have picked better songs

Sure they were done by Elvis, but she could have picked better songs, and she could have done better with the ones she picked.  People complain that the guys should have done a Bette Midler week, but I could just see Elliott doing Wind Beneath My Wings, or Taylor doing The Rose...they would just have to pick songs that best suited them from that artist and then just do a great job. She should have tried Love Me Tender.

I think you have picked wisely
because the field for nursing is unbelievable. Having worked at hospitals, doctor offices, etc. I heard from nurses not only the $$$$ salary but the perks that go along with it. One nurse told me about how she got her living expenses covered by 2 doctors vying for her working for them. I have been here for 30+ years so I am not in the same boat trying to raise children, etc. but if I had to do that now I would never be able to live off the salary handed to the MTs now. Good luck!
I picked up the Homedics Shiatsu
neck massager at Walgreen's last month, and it's so relaxing! Eight or ten minutes at bedtime and I fall asleep immediately. For anyone with tense neck muscles, this is a must-have. I've tried the seat cushion too-- nice!
The signal cannot be picked up on wireless if you
even if you DON'T, they can only pick up and use  your SIGNAL for access - not YOUR actual online activity.  How this fallacy began is beyond me.  If your activity could be monitored just because you use wireless then satellite internet would not exist and Linksys would be out of business.  Many MAJOR corporations, banks and government entities use satellite internet on laptops for salesmen, traveling employees and others who work out of the office in the USA and overseas.  Do you think they would risk it if there were an actual problem?  Your Keystrokes are more likely be picked up by spyware, adware, viruses and worms which are prevalent on ALL internet connections.  If any MTSO had a problem in the past it is because their own site was not properly secure - it had nothing to do with the type of internet connection.  The MTSOs are denying employment to a lot of good MTs just because they live where DSL and cable are not available.  All based on what is, in my book, an OLD WIVE'S TALE.
Is there a reason you picked Colorado or was it
    nm
I picked up a brochure and it stated that --sm
the student version did not come with outlook 2007, which I happen to like. Guess it will be the next up version for me. sigh.
I have not picked up a book in forever
I go to the Internet for everything I need to know. Keep in mind that you need to find reference sites that are legit, then the Internet is the way to go. In fact, my books are packed in a box and I have no clue where that box is. The exception to that is my Book of Style, and it is a rare use item, as well.
cherry-picked routing to VR and offshore
Ethical to route the work in a systematic way according to the documented processes of your company. Unethical to route work "as you see fit" if "as you see fit" is defined based on who you like and who you don't, as you described above. Tired of hearing the complaining? Get over it and get used to it, because it isn't going to stop and it is only going to get worse.

On what basis to you know that the "paranoid" plotting and speculation about dictation being cherry picked to go to India or VR is unfounded? I notice the natural variation in who is dictating, etc., the true "roll of the dice" as you describe it, and that doesn't bother me.

It isn't that it "has" to be more than just fate. It is more than just fate.

VR and offshore transcriptionists can't handle the tough dictation, yet we know they are being used. Do you think what is being routed to VR and offshore is random, the luck of the draw? I don't.

So I don't know why I shouldn't suspect that if on the average, in an ongoing trend, dictation is getting worse for domestic transcriptionists to a degree that could not be a cooincidence, it means that for reasons other than coincidence, easier work is being routed somewhere else.

I can tell you are comfortable with "the way things have always been," and change makes you nervous, but get used to the fact that whether it has always been this way or not, it is not going to continue to be that way.

Get used to the ideas of MTs standing up for their rights and fighting back or quit reading the complaints and type away in your happy, sheltered world. The status quo is not going to continue.
my supervisor cherry picked the normal
cataract surgeries, normal any other type of surgeries she could using the same illogical reasoning that you have used. That is because she is too incompetent to do transcription.
They offshore so you get the cherry picked leftovers.
Sound quality is lousy. Totally rigid on their schedule. They have the attitude that you should be grateful to work for them.
I'm sorry you feel picked on. Yours was the post I responded too because SM
yours was the one I found to be most unbelievable and in case you didn't notice, I wasn't the only one who found it unbelievable.

Nope, my hubby picked mine up last year and
hopefully his deductions will clear out mine this year.
I can relate.....I took on extra work and now my DH just picked a fight with me, and is also winding
the kids up massively as I type this. Totally off your subject but he just dropped on me that he is cutting all contact off from my dad since he recently remarried and intimated that he was leaving me and my brothers nothing in his will......DH also said the kids were not allowed to have any contact with him either.  I can get around that and just leave with the kids when he is at work if I have to resort to that.  But this is bullsh*t.....I fear if it keeps up I am headed for divorce court.  He is getting weirder and weirder about money, though he professes not to care or want it.  Then he dropped that when his dad (75) dies his mom (70) was moving in with us.......WHAT!  So right now I am hoping that his mom goes first as he will never live with his dad, or that his dad lives another 15 years at least....We had promised my mom she could live with us, but now that she is dead, he says it will be his mother as he has to protect his interests (and the kids....as supposedely all his parent's money is to go to them.....he plans not to touch it). So needless to say I am LIVID, don't want to work right now, am not talking to him though he keeps coming in and ranting more....he has calmed down some but still driving me nuts.  He has to stop drinking, that is what it comes down to....much more rational then.  But I really think the writing is on the wall and it's scary as I have no where to go now.
I just picked up a UK account. I need a spellcheck for british medical. Any suggestions?
    tia
That is what I'm trying to do. I've picked up some smaller accounts, dropped the national, an
very hard to cut my hours. It takes time learning the new docs and systems, but I'm sure soon I'll be working less (I pray).

Thanks for your thoughts. I should have never gotten used to the bonus $$.

    train

I have done "Chicago" on the train.  From here, MS, its an all night ride but has sleeper cars.  Nothing interesting to see on the way.  But as corny as it sounds, Chicago is a great place to visit.  Zillions of Museums, fountains, outdoor art, great music, great transit system, ghettos, SUUPPPER shopping, fantastic restaurants........We did they family thing when I was 9, 11, 12, 14 and I did it bymyself when I was 21 going into my senion year of college.  Coming back with on the train with the college crew was a hoot.  Spirit of New Orleans is pretty cool, however, N/O is really not children friendly - a lot to see and do in the daytime, but the kiddies need to be in by dark.....AhhhheeeeeeeO TA

    To train VR

That is pretty scary.  I have been curious about VR - wondering how it really works.  If the doctor is doing the dictating, how can the Transcriptionist ever get it really trained? Doesn't the doctor actually have to train the program?  I do one doctor as a side line from my full-time transcription job and was wondering if that is something I would want to use for his work.  When I saw Dragon Program at Best Buy, the box said it would type it at about 160 lph.  Is that true?  If so, not so hot as I type faster than that.  However, in the future, I may want to save my arms/carpals and use it.  So am curious to know more from someone who has used the programs.  If adviseable, what programs are the best ones?

    TIA

    about to train soon
so I don't know any hot keys for this program yet, I worked on Meditech before this and DocQScribe before that. I'll give it a little while to get it down, hopefully it won't take that long
Had to train my male (sm)
Started by keeping the box really clean with that nice scooping sand that they like. Then I would walk over to the box and say, here kitty, and invite him to go in.
After his pee pee in the box, he gets a treat!
We still have an occasional problem, but only when the box is dirty. The pee pee in the corner means he doesn't like that dirty box!

Been married 29 yrs, get more now than ever but I say it took me 18 yrs to train to where he knows
    :O
I know they are in NJ. You have to train for a long
times - weeks?? - in the office. They have super long testing, and I remember one person, the owner, I believe, was very nice to deal with, while the testing person was horrible. In this day and age, I certainly don't have time to drive 4 hours round trip for a week or 2 to train! Told them "no thanks"!!
WOW, look at your train of thought. All sm
evil wrongdoers ----------------- right? Why don't you throw in the adulter, the priest pedophile ---------- and the bigamist, the serial killer. Do you know any gays? I would hazard a guess and say no. I hope I am wrong. But then again you probably know some and just don't KNOW that they are gay-they are too busy HIDING from judgemental dogoders like yourself who demand gays live the lie to suit the society that worships the almighty dollar and war instead of each other. Are you against violence films depicting killing or only films which depicting loving individuals and their problems? Please respond, I am really interested in this. I used to think like you a lifetime ago but having a gay relative opened my eyes to a lot of stuff hopefully you will never see-having a loved one lie for 25 years about who he really is and die from a horrid disease alone because people couldn't handle the truth. A death most robber, thieves, serial killers and rapists deserve but don't get as they get fat in prison on my money.
Again, its because you did not properly train him!!

    There were train bombings in
and I do not feel India is secure at all, let alone for medical records.  But I have noticed a lot of bashing of American MTs here lately.  I don't understand why.  Just because one MT is not reliable, that doesn't mean we all are.  It just seems to be the thing to do.  Also, it said as low as 9 CPL.  Well I would transcribe for and do at 9 cpl with over 20 years experience.  We are not necessarily more expensive, just the service overhead jacks up the price so much for their big CEO salaries and benefits, they don't want to pay the MT much.
