just type the letters that you saved your normal as, then do Control R. So if you named your normal, say, PE, right after you type the E, hit Ctrl R, and your normal will come in.

As to stopping the expansion one time only, the only trick I know of is to simply type two spaces, back up two spaces, then type your PT -- then arrow over across that extra space, and continue typing. If there's an easier way other than turning off the auto expansion, I don't know what it is either.
