Having a couple zero-balance accounts open is okay . . .

Posted By: Former bank manager . . . on 2005-08-31
In Reply to: Quick question for x-bank manager - Excellent credit here

but the available credit DOES count just the same as having that same amount charged.  Lenders want to see open, good-rated accounts . . . just not so many that you have the potential for LA arge debt-to-income ratio.  Keeping 2-3 is good.  More than that isn't.  Hth.

Well, that is incorrect information. You should leave your 0 balance accounts open sm
that shows that you are responsible and not over your head in debt. When you have a credit line of 15,000 and your balance is 0, that is a great asset. I am a mortgage loan officer myself, and the mortgage brokers want to see open accounts with 0 balances. That also helps you debt to income ratio, which in turn increases your credit score!
They are checking accounts with higher interest, minimum balance required, I believe.
dd
I have a couple accounts through a medium-

sized company, but I also have my own private accounts.  Cutting out the "middle man" means much more per line.  Also, it means I am never out of work.  I tried juggling working for 2 companies, and it was a never-ending struggle.  They either both gave me too much at the same time, or both would run out of work.  Having some 1-doctor accounts of my own (with a much more lenient TAT) has worked very well.  When my company accounts run out, I do my private account work.

You're right in that we are only limited by ourselves.  Sometimes I tend to push myself to the max and then some.  Once in a while I just don't want to do ANY transcription at all for a day or so, but I truly love working on production.  Work more...make more!

Actually, NOT having open credit accounts hurts your FICO score.
I closed my credit cards 10 years ago and paid them all off.  All I have left is my student loan and my mortgage, which are both paid on time every month.  You'd think that would show me as a responsible consumer because I pay cash for everything and don't live off of credit.  Instead, my FICO score stinks now because my available credit to my used credit shows as maxed out.  It's complete bunk.  People are rewarded for using credit while responsible people who pay cash are punished by this FICO system.  I have a 4% interest rate on my mortgage, but the credit union tried to milk me at 12% interest on a car loan when they advertised 5% because of my FICO score.  My only option is to open up some credit cards or something, but then that shows as excessive inquiries or too much new credit.
You can't just open the attachment. You need to save it to a file and then open SM
your wave player and load it.
I have 2 middle age couple friends. One couple became pregnant from condom failure.
This is not just "irresponsible" behavior! Both couples are "fixed" now, because for them, reliable birth control was NOT. But it's an error to assume this stuff happens to people who are unmarried or irresponsible. Both these couples are raising 2nd families, now, but it wasn't "irresponsibility" that did them in!
Yes, if I could have the right balance of
administrative support and the power to hire/fire employees who are worth keeping/letting go.

Yes, I would.

How to balance it all.
I've been doing MT for 7 looooong years now and have recently gone back to school (pre-med).  I've had to find a new job, a child with ADD/depression who takes massive amounts of one on one time to get school work done, etc., and another little one.  I'm struggling getting work done and my homework.  I took a fairly light load (13 credits) but am just feeling overwhelmed.  Any time saving tips would be greatly appreciated!
It's tough to balance it all.
I've got a very full life, too. DH puts in a lot of hours at his job, but he doesn't see that I put in just as many. When he takes a break at work, he gets to sit down somewhere and actually eat or drink a Starbucks coffee. I have to make my own coffee, drop a kid off, pick a kid up or swap out a load of laundry during my "breaks" just to keep up. He does put in long hours at his job, and he's too tired to help out with household chores. He doesn't have time to get his errands done during the day either because he's got a demanding job. The kids do help out around here, too, but they have really full schedules with school, sports, jobs and friends. We've got pets contributing to the mess. Even my relatives call during the day for help with stuff. Cooking, grocery shopping, errands, bills and finances all fall on me to do. It's a load of bunk. I told DH I wasn't going to do MT full-time any more because of everything else I do around here. Why should I make as much money (or more) than he does, work just as many hours, and do EVERYTHING else that is expected of me? I even got hired part-time at an MT job, but they're trying to creep the hours up on me again. Plus, I have a second part-time job that's pretty demanding and just not worth what they pay me. I've got people demanding of me from sunrise to sunset, and I'm sick of it all! I'd like to sit on my backside and watch a TV program or movie for a change. I'd like to be have time to pursue my hobbies.

You (we) gotta get mean! JUST SAY NO to all the people badgering you all the time. Don't answer the phone or the door. Use caller ID and put a "do not disturb" note on the door. Lock or close your office door if you have one. Stay focused. Set work goals for yourself. I type at least 30 minutes of dictation before taking a break to go swap out laundry and stretch, then I get back to it. Assess your life and see what you can cut back on or streamline. Make a list of daily chores that take less than 5 minutes to do, and do those throughout the day. Delegate, ask for help.
How do you balance time
This especially causes problems for me working at home. I help take care of grandchildren and help my children also, hubby, pets, housework, cooking, errands, etc. I can't seem to balance that with my work. It cuts my production with the constant interruptions.
There is a balance though, people who are too social
People who tend to spend a lot of time alone seem to be a little sad.  Just mix it up a little and find your balance.  For me, if i'm around people too much, I feel absolutely drained, but if i'm totally isolated, I feel trapped and sad.  So I socialize a couple times a week by taking classes, seeing family members, talking to neighbors, meeting up with a friend, and thats enough.  Just not everyday, maybe not even every two days!
Balance Ball chair. Has anyone tried?
I found this in a catalogue: http://www.gaiam.com/retail/product/95-1004

I have a balance ball, and now and then I sit on it at my desk. It really does feel great, but the problem is keeping it steady. It's large and I have a hard time keeping myself at a comfy distance from the keyboard. I was thinking of getting this chair as a "supplemental" chair. I don't think it would work for 8 hours a day, but I think it would help alleviate some pressure and strain for periods during my work sessions.

And, this may be TMI - but this past summer I had a breast reduction. (Best thing I've ever done for myself!) The change in my body has definitely affected my posture and has alleviated pain in my back and shoulders. But I really need to strengthen my back and obliques more. I thought this chair might help with that.

Has anyone used this type of chair, or even used a balance ball at their desks? What do you think?
balance...sm (long message)
just wanted to encourage you. i suffer from burnout too (30+ years in this industry would burn out anyone!) =) ...but I have found ways to overcome it.

i would suggest that you NOT change companies. often when we're really stressed, making major changes is the LAST thing we should do.

for me, i find if i lower my MT expectations and quit being as perfectionistic as i want to be, i decrease the stress load. if you have the ESL from h*ll leave the allowed amounts of blanks or let QA deal with them and move on! you have nothing to prove to these difficult dictators...i try not to take it personally that they don't give a rip that they make our job nearly impossible....

i also need to keep my work life and home/personal/creative/school/community/family roles in balance. i work 2 jobs (1 MT, 1 not, go to school--online, and am a single mom raising 2 kids--older now) IT CAN BE DONE! And burnout can be BEAT!

if you need some moral support let me know--i'll give you my email addy.

ALSO, as far as the CTS, for YEARS I've had to wear typing gloves...best ones I've found are "MouseMitts" http://www.mousemitt.com/wrist.html
i have no affiliation with them...just passing on a good product that's saved me from having to have surgery...

hang in there...there is a creative solution to your burnout...

now, back to MT work for me!!!
=)
The OP was asking how other MTs balance homelife and work....
she didn't ask to be judged on whether or not she had experience working outside the home, et cetera...if you don't have anything productive to say to her than why bothering posting a response...obviously it sounds like she has a lot going on in her life and just needs some positive encouragement not judgement by others who feel they are more "grounded"....
Any advice on finding balance... sm

with working as an MT, the ebb and flow of the business of IC working from a pool, being a mother of a 10 year-old and a wife.  How do you find the time for a well balanced family and work life?  Finding time to be with your growing children, teaching them values, finding time for your relationship with spouse so that all of your family are happy, working as and MT at home.  I find I work way too long although I am still in the learning phase of my company just starting full time.  I find my daughter is growing up and I barely have time for her or for my husband.  I want to provide a happy home and I want my daughter to learn values.  She is having trouble at school and at home with her attitude.

Due to finanancial difficulties we had to move in with my mother-in-law and father-in-law and it really is not the best situation but could not be helped.  I am slow as an MT.  I just have a hard time finding a good balance for my family and working.  I wondered how some of you out there do it and are happy with your work life and family life raising children and finding time for a well-balanced relationship with your spouse.   My huband is trying to find a job now working as a cook in a hospital.  He just has to wait for the hiring manager to contact him.

I appreciate any advice.

They are trying desperately to balance their runaway budget
Have you heard about the new naturalization process aimed at 11 million illegals in the country... along with some hoops to jump through (Learning English - ???) etc., they must pay 2000 dollars.

Do the math 11 million x 2000
its not a lot but its something
I applaude all who are able to balance all their jobs; I doubt I could even do 2I!! nm
xx
How do you find a balance in this type of work...

with family, friends, hobbies, etc and still have time to type!  Is it possible, if so, how?

Do not close credit card accts with 0 balance
I get offered and have used no interest credit cards for years.  They are usually no interest for 1-1/2 years.  When it is time for them to start charging interest, I roll them over into another no interest card.  I have never closed an acct, just cut up the cards and forget about them.  My FICO score is excellent, as is my credit.  I get offers for no interest cards at least once a week so it obviously hasn't hurt me.
I read a book once that burnout was caused by being out of balance. sm
Working too much and not giving time to other parts of your life is the culprit in the job arena. Variety is the spice of life, so focusing on balancing your job, your need for a good cash flow, with times to enjoy yourself is essential.

It takes work, and fortunately I have an S/O that demands that I take time for us to have fun and for "me" to have fun as an individual.

Most banks have auto numbers to call to find out balance. SM
You could call bank tomorrow morning. Maybe put some charges on credit card, but anyway call them.

As stated, it is taken out immediately. When I purchase stuff and use it, but forget to put it in checkbook, recording will tell me as soon as I arrive home what was spent.
How about zillions of accounts. MQ has these accounts so overloaded even the new hires dont have any
work. I would love to read some of these reports and then they expect perfect QA and no blanks. Did they lose their minds completely.
How do I get it ST to open when escription is open?

Started yesterday, August 1st...balance calender year in Tennessee..nm
=
The accounts are old and she keeps her accounts TRUSTING she hired the right MTs
who if in doubt will ask questions regarding reports. No one can find all mistakes in all reports and that is human to have a report with perhaps a typo. You think anyone reads through all the reports of a national company before they get to the hospital? Not a chance. Some random QA is supposed to correct all mistakes? Not hardly. Doctors/dictators make mistakes too. We all do. So do QA people. So the thing is this person hires good people who are trustworthy, the hospital likes the way she does their account and life goes on quite nicely w/o hovering editors/QA people. BTW, who QAs the QA people on your accounts. Ever wonder?
The two sentence normal reports will balance out the 3 page reports.
I am Wendy too
Not all accounts are good accounts. One
That should not be the case. Sounds like you need new accountant with strong knowledge of IC deduction.  We save a several thousand on what we pay in taxes based on what I can deduct as at home IC, $2000 off the top for what I pay my child to help with office chores, as an example.  The measly 7.xx% I pay that an employer would pay is well worth my independence in being my own boss.
Going to keep this in the open
For anyone who did not read the previous.
I Already Open it
Please Tell Me How I can Remove it
Okay, this should be open to all MT's...sm
Thanks for bring me up short. This question should be open to all MT's, especially those working for other companies. Tell me what you like as well as what you dislike. If this comes about I want to try to fulfill those dreams and requirements as well as make a profit. I'm not greedy - I believe it sharing the wealth. Again, I want to get and RETAIN great employees!
Open
Express Scribe and click on Settings. Click on Files, and un-select the work file types you want the other program to open.

Or, open the program you want to use, find the equivalent settings in it, and then make sure the file types ARE selected.
This is what I was saying....the box does not always open.
My question is how do I manually open this box when it does not show up in the background or anywhere else. Thanks
Why do you want to open this?
If you don't know what this is, you probably don't need to be messing around with it, especially if you are being taken to a website that wants money to fix it for you.

If nothing was wrong with your computer before, you probably have no reason to need this. You didn't say how you ran into this, but in the event it is a scam, why don't you leave it alone.

AN OPEN NOTE TO MTS

1-Do not wonder WHY work is being sent overseas when in screening applications 20 of 25 resumes are full of errors, typos and people applying that do not come NEAR to fitting the job requirements.

2-Do not wonder WHY work is being sent overseas when you are hired to work hours YOU REQUESTED and then you do not even bother to start work, call, email, just nothing.

3-Do not wonder WHY work is being sent overseas when you are tested and screened only to find out that several "friends of friends" circulated the test around and while you do wonderfully on the test, now in the real situation, you can not figure out the difference between discrete and discreet.

4-Do not wonder WHY you were given less and less work, but take a look at the quality of work you produced...full of blanks, not formatted to specifications in the manual sent, skipped reports.  When Q*A has to redo 90% of your work, it is easier to quietly phase you out than to continue to "train" a supposedly seasoned MT

5-Do not wonder WHY you were taken off an account, but look at the feedback you were given regarding the continued mistakes with spelling (you do not use the spellcheck as too time consuming - your words), continued mistakes with doctors signatures, names, formats, phrases.  Your position is to "pound out lines" and not worry about the quality.

6-Do not wonder WHY no one will hire you...after all, MTSOs communicate with each other too and the same names just seem to cycle through

7-Do not wonder WHY companies look overseas for workers...because at least THEY want to work.  They are not taking days off at a time with no notice...leaving a company and client in the lurch.

8-Do not wonder WHY your resume was not answered...you applied before, were tested before and never bothered to answer emails regarding hiring...never bothered to start on your start date...resumes are kept and note made of why someone that seemed very qualified was not hired.

9-Do not wonder WHY you were not hired...remember me?  I am the one that tested you, screened you, then talked to you for quite some time on the phone interviewing you.  Remember me?  I am the one you "sold" yourself to as far as being ethical, good worker, etc., only to find out that you received the hiring package, then contacted the client directly and suddenly, you did not want the job and then I see you are working FOR THEM....

10-Do not wonder WHY you were not hired after taking the test...take a look at the test results and the responses back you made like "that is how I have always done it" and I do not think you are correct because that is not how I was told or trained to do it.

11-Do not wonder WHY you were quietly let go...check your invoices and the inflated lines and/or hours on there?  The system SHOWS the reports you ran, lines you did, but you continue to add report numbers not done by you and lines not done by you.  AND for bonus hours...you continue to add bonuses that were not earned.

12-Do not wonder WHY I cringe when it comes time to hire again..I cringe because of every MT out there that shows NO RESPECT to a potential employer now or down the road by ignoring remails.....receiving a test, but never taking it...getting a test graded and offered position but never responds back....going through entire hiring process with access codes, start dates and times but then NEVER even starts...or the ones that we PAY a computer guy to get set up and they never start working...or we send software and equipment to and then never get it back or have a legal fight to get it back.

There are two sides to ever story, this I know, but as an MTSO the above are simply a FEW of the hundreds of things experienced in trying to hire just ONE good MT....

How do you open up that .lex file to....sm
copy/paste it into MS Word?  When I try opening it, it asks what format do I want and every option I've tried hasn't worked.

It certainly is a thorn! Don't open any of it, though.
That's why I got concerned, and still concerned even with this SpamBayes, as there could be a virus in some of it.  Also, hackers may be trying to get into your stuff, maybe all they need is for you/ me to click on it and to get information, don't know all of it, but I won't open any of their stupid email.

With all due respect for your opinion, people from all extremes of thought, are what make this country great. As Americans, we should question everything our leaders do. For too long, politicians have tried to conceal information, or conceal an agenda from the American public. The public is growing up as a whole, and it is becoming wise to the manipulation by government, and those in charge of great power. There is great danger in this, and we should not become a complacent society. We should not be expected to accept explanations so easily, and create a society where we are not allowed to explore issues. Michael Moore is every bit as American as you or I. Many people do not like the policies by our government. Many people will speak out against those policies and protest. That does not make one anti-American. It is because many of us, including Michael Moore, who I may not necessarily agree with, have strong feelings about being an American that we protest what we feel goes against our definition of what America is about - freedom, justice, and the pursuit of happiness. This is the problem today, which I find disturbing - many people pledge unquestionable loyalty to our leaders who have too much power and abuse it, and then there are those of us who feel devotion and passion for America's ideals and constitution, and protest any sense of suppression from government. Remember our founding fathers, and what many suffered and sacrificed. They rebelled against government that was too harsh and unfair, and fought to uphold their freedom. This is what America is all about.

I have not removed it from the system but my boss should be in touch with me on Monday. They installed and I will pass that by them. Happy Medical Transciptionist Week to each and eveyone of you.  Your dedication to your profession is, in my opinion, admirable.  I wish I could do what you do.  The knowledge you carry with you each day, the amount of patience and attention to every detail is beyond belief.  I cannot imagine getting up out of bed every day and doing what you do each and every time you sit before your PC.  I am a mere radiology/Diagnostic Imaging MT.  They tried to cross-train me for discharge summaries, clinic notes, psychiatric notes, etc....and I almost went out of my mind.  I have nothing but the utmost respect for you all and for all you do and know how to do.  I just wanted to say this to you during MT week, and wish you all the best.  My hat is truly off to all of you.  You all deserve to take a bow!!

Sincerely.....

Thank you so much. After having a very frustrating day with my acute care job, it is so nice to hear that. Please don't discount yourself. I also started in radiology. I then went to a medical group and three years later went to acute care. It has been three years since starting acute care. I thought I would never get it, but I worked hard and am hanging in there doing a more than fair job.
just like people who don't NM at the end to let you know no need to open! NM

Open office
I am saying the same thing as I need to set up my laptop.  Someone told me that Open Office is compatible with Microsoft Word products - can switch documents between the programs.  I have gotten as far as installing it, but have not figured out anything further as of yet.  If you check this out and find it works for you - tell me how you did it!!   It has everything in it like Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Database - so hopefully it will work out to save us all some money - it is a free program.
