Here's what I do

I have a list of every expense, how much it costs, and how many lines I need to net that amount of money. I have them listed in order of importance. When I start working (the 1st day of the month), I start checking off as I work to pay for each item. When I get all my expenses paid (I mean everything, down to haircuts and spending money, everything), then I have a list of wants. Sometimes it is maybe a piece of furniture, or a trip or just an extra amount of cash for my pocket. I list how much and, again, how many lines I need to net that money. I start working on that.

It is of most importance to me that every paycheck I get to reward myself personally for my job well done. It keeps me motivated.

I HAVE to work for my expenses to be paid. I'm not going to lie away at night wondering if I will have enough to pay the bills. I WANT more than that so I set goals and I work toward them.

This sheet hangs next to my summary of what my accounts expect and my employer info. I can see it plain as day all day. When I have a hard time pushing, even getting started, staying on task, I look at it and I can see where I am and what I need to do.

Just print off a new one every month!
