Here's what I would do

Having 6 years already, why not apply for some PT jobs out there?  You can be vague (okay, lie like MQ!).  If nobody will let you learn, turn it around to your advantage.  If the co. fires you, big deal.  There will always be others.

Seriously, it's your financial situation, not anyone's here.  Many of us learned by just "doing it."
