Holiday Pay

Posted By: Hazel on 2005-11-13

I recently began working for a service who only pays for a holiday IF you work that day (compensation of 10 cpl).  However, if you don't work that day, you don't get paid.  I am full time with all full-time benefits.  I realize production pay is entirely different than hourly, but is this common for most transcription companies?  I'm an old transcriptionist, but new to the ways of production pay.  Thanks for any input!

holiday day

at my company we don't get paid for holidays either...guess that is the price of being able to work at home....sucks...we can get paid by taking PTO time but I usually just work extra when I know a holiday is coming up, but frankly who wants to work during x-mas time with the hustle and bustle....

Holiday pay

It it a little hard for me to payfor holidays when the accounts don't pay the owner for holidays.  Wish I could for my help but just can't afford it.  I sympathize with you truly.  Guess I could pay a cheaper line rate to them year round and then be about to do it, but that does not seem fair.   It is hard in this business to offer many benefits as we do not get paid unless the work is done,  just like truck drivers, hair stylists, manicurists, etc.

No one ever has to pay you holiday pay.
It is a generous gesture but it isn't mandatory, you know.

There is no excuse for you to feel it is necessary to be paid for time not worked. If you want that, go back inhouse.

PTO is generous enough.

No, you will not get holiday pay until...
I was told that you have to be hitting your 11,000 per pay period for at least 90 days before you get holiday pay, benefits, etc. You can confirm this with the HR lady. They do pay for holidays once you get past this.
Holiday pay

I guess I should have stated that my gals are I/C's and they get 75 to 80% of what I get from the docs on a gross line.  If I charge more to the docs, they will go elsewhere.  They just type and I do all the pick up, delivery, invoicing, etc.  I  also just got hit by the city for my business license which just went up to 3.3% of GROSS receipts BEFORE any expenses.   If your business makes less than $25K you dont have to pay for a business license but if you make $1 over the 25K you have to pay on the entire amount.   So I have to pay this even on the amount that the gals make.  Am not sure I can stay in this for long.  The city is saying that all IC's that make over $25K should pay for a license.

Do you get holiday pay?
How many of you work for companies who give holiday pay premiums or time off with pay?  Mine doesn't give either and it sucks!
Yes a Holiday
Holiday for me. 6 cents a 75-character line kind of seems a bit low, though. Was that perhaps a mistake I am wondering?

holiday
Actually, there is no solution to this problem - there are no solutions to any questions about the MT world... it's always something and I don't say that lightly.
What is everyone doing for the holiday weekend? sm
We're not doing much - probably will go and see the Herbie movie at some point and of course cooking out on the grill is mandatory.
This is ONLY because of 4th of July holiday...sm
and not unheard of in the industry. You really should call your acct mgr and ask for a secondary acct. My acct mgr has been VERY accommodating. Before long all accts will be booming again, as mine has picked up today.
I am, too, wonder if it's just because of the Labor Day holiday?

Regular pay on a holiday? (sm)
I wouldn't do it.  No offense intended but I'm wondering how many places do that?  I've never heard of not getting 1.5 on a holiday for working?  Hey, if I could, I would give you mine since I'm not using it.  Have been an MT for a long time (16+ years) and have never and will never work a holiday for straight time.  As I mentioned when hired it was agreed I would not work holidays and I plan to stick to it.
Is July 4th a holiday for you?
I don't think the company I work for observes this holiday.  After checking my handbook, it looks as if it is not even on the list.  We have to alternate holidays and then only have to work a half shift, so it is not so bad.  I was just checking to see if it was my holiday and was surprised to see that it is a regular day.  I'm sure I saw it when I started with them last year, but it just didn't register with me.  We had Memorial Day and will have Labor Day.  I'd rather have July 4th than either of those two holidays.  Is anyone else having to work that day as a regular day?
What you doing over the Labor Day holiday?

Well today is a holiday......
And if my memory serves me right that means low work until maybe mid-October? LOL!
No Holiday Work
I work for a small local nephrology office. There is no weekend work (I work 40 hours during the week) and we get all the major holidays off, so Monday was a non-working day for me.
Venting on a holiday

Anybody out there working today, LABOR DAY? Expected to work the holiday, and guess what, no work! And then when it trickles in, of course the crummy junk bottom of the bucket type which add up to no lines, and getting lots of comments from QA (who is looking for something to do, no doubt).

How about we don't work a holiday, and everyone comes to work Tuesday with stuff to type, everyone makes money?

Bad idea of course, we have to remember the TATs.

Sorry to be so crabby, but thanks for listening to he vent.

Jewish holiday

holiday schedule?
Just wondering how other companies/hospitals handle the holiday schedule so as to where you will not be working the same holidays two years in a row.  I am working at a hospital and this is my second year in a row working Christmas.   I have worked two July 4ths in a row, too.  When I asked about it, was told it is just how it falls, but if i could come up with an easier solution, to let her know.  There are some companies that ask you to choose 1 winter holiday and 1 summer holiday to work, and the next year you do another.  Any other suggestions on how this can be handled fairly?  TIA
See Holiday/Recipe board.

Family holiday plans (sm)

I just had to post this as it reminds me so much of a lady who posted about her family, saying that they were ungrateful.

I was going to take the Amtrak train to visit my family on Thanksgiving, it's only about an hour on the Amtrak, and about $80.00 for the ticket!  My stepmother says to me that it would be way to much trouble for them to drive the 15 minutes to the station to pick me up, they are having company that day.  My father would spend his whole Thanksgiving day going back and forth to the train station.  But I was welcome to come the day before Thanksgiving and stay until the day after Thanksgiving, that way they could drop me off at the train station when they didn't have company.  Company meaning her children, who have always come first.  So I am supposed to go to their house at an alloted time?  I'll be darned if I'm going to do that.

Now I'll be darned if I am going to pay $80.00 for a train ticket to spend a day with a family with this attitude.  I told them I won't be coming, I haven't had the time to spend 3 days there and have to work, and they said it would be too much trouble to pick me up at the train station on Thanksgiving.  Am I right or wrong in not going on Thanksgiving?  Any opinions?

Transhealth pays for holiday pay
You have to work if it falls on your day but you have the option of asking off. You get holiday pay (if you are off as well) plus you get your line count that day.
Pressured to work Holiday
Anyone else feel pressured to work holidays?  When hired, I made it clear I would not be working holidays, however, the inevitable e-mail about being out of TAT comes my way today and how if scheduled, you are expected online.  Don't plan on working it because it was made clear at time of hiring, I would not work holidays.  Another benefit of working at home -- pressured to work Holidays.  I'm just venting and I guess I'm crabby too!
Pressure to work holiday
I don't think you're crabby and appreciate the venting. Usually work volumes sink really low to almost nothing around the major holidays. They certainly are aware of this every time they pressure their employees to work a holiday. Just a thought.
Again, we agree. Very selfish to think they should have every holiday off, as if they are sm

the only ones with a family or a life.  And yes, when there is a chance to line their pockets, they will be the first to suck the work dry.

I guess it doesn't matter.   At least I know I'm doing the right thing.  I take breaks and have my family time and everyone understands that is just the nature of the business.   I guess once people quit getting sick at times it is inconvenient for us, we can all take off.

What holiday shortage? None this year

Mother's Day is not a Hallmark holiday (sm)

First, thank you to everyone for your thoughts on my kids. I am feeling pretty down today. I think it's compounded by the fact that I really feel the only person in my life who has really thought that I was just the greatest was my dad, and I lost him back in October. I sure miss having someone around who just in his own quiet way lets you know that you are loved.

So, anyway, I thought about the Hallmark holiday comment below, and while you would probably think Mother's Day was one of those (I guess I did), it actually is not. I thought what I found on the holiday was interesting so thought I'd share it with you.

Origin of Mother's Day

In the times of the ancient Greeks, Rhea, the Mother of the Gods, was honored with a special festival. In seventeenth century England, "Mothering Sunday," celebrated on the fourth Sunday in Lent, honored England's mothers.

Jumping across the ocean, the first observation of a Mother's Day in the United States took place in 1872 when Julia Ward Howe, social reformer and poet who penned the words to the "Battle Hymn of the Republic," suggested a day to honor mothers. This day, which she felt should be dedicated to peace, was celebrated by gatherings that she organized and held in Boston. This tradition spread, and was later organized in other areas of the country as well.

In 1907, Anna Jarvis took Howe's idea a step further and began to campaign for a nationally recognized Mother's Day. In the late nineteenth century, Jarvis's own mother had tried to establish "Mother's Friendship Days" as a way to heal the scars of the Civil War. Persuading her mother's church in Grafton, to celebrate Mother's Day on the anniversary of Jarvis's mother's death - the second Sunday in May - our Mother's Day holiday as it is now celebrated was born. Jarvis also began the tradition of wearing a carnation in honor or memory of our mothers - a coloured carnation if your mother is still living, a white one if she is deceased.

Jarvis's push to make Mother's Day a national event involved letter writing to ministers, politicians and businessmen. By 1911, Mother's Day was being celebrated in almost every state in the country. On 9th of May 1914, President Woodrow Wilson made the official proclamation that Mother's Day would be a national holiday to be celebrated annually on the second Sunday in May.

Mother's Day is still celebrated around the world at various times throughout the year. There are some countries, such as Finland, Denmark and Australia that do observe the holiday on the second Sunday in May.

sorry to wreck your holiday mood
but i personnally like to be aware of what is going on around me. We can be thankful on this 4th of July that we are still free -- obviously, many in this world would like to change that. We all need to remain vigilant in our awareness, preparedness and voting for the politicians who will be mindful of our enemies.
Work as usual on holiday - sm
As an IC, if I can find time, I will work as usual on a holiday. Being an IC means you kinda need to fulfill your client's needs. So, if they need me to work a little extra or work on the holiday, I will do my best to meet their needs. Sometimes, I can not, but most times I will do what they need.

Mind you, I have my own clients, not an MT company. It is my philosphy that I need to keep my clients happy and exceed their expectations in fulfilling their needs or they will look somewhere else for my services.

Hope this helps you, even if in a small way.

I would like to say, it is an adjustment going from employee to IC. Some need to change their way of thinking and start thinking like a "business" owner. It is not just a job, but your business and your career.

Someone is not in the holiday spirit. Santa won't like that.

Hey,, holiday spirit on Gab Board sm
Someone posted a message on her nephew needing something while in service to our country, Whoa?? I'm going there, follow me, lets keep it about our USA over there, protecting us from the "press 1's" or whatever, who are sitting on their butts collecting money. I had to stay in line yesterday while others sent money home via wire while they are collecting from us?? Hello!!!!! ON the house, not on my shift, give to the USA!!!
Happy Thanksgiving Holiday to all...sm

What religious holiday was yesterday in which one could not work???

He said his religion was celebratting a special day, yom kippur?  ramadan?  Anyone know?  I have never heard of a week day religious holiday when one could not work.

I might use that excuse.

Anyone else having low work volume? Maybe due to holiday on Friday?

Holiday Greeting Capitalization Question.
I need help with capitalization!  In letters,  should I capitalize it when the doc says, "I hope you have a happy holiday season."  Happy Holiday Season instead? or if they say, "I hope you have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year."  Should I capitalize Merry Christmas and Happy New Year?  I couldn't find anything on this in the AAMT BOS.
Glad I'm not the only anti-Hallmark holiday (sm)
one here. Our family-created rituals are so much more satisfying.
Thanks SO very much. This will make the holiday extra special. nm

This is a U.S. holiday so the ESLs don't normally celebrate it at home anyway, so
that is why there are so many working on holidays IMO.
Snail Mail Holiday Cards

Do you send Christmas cards or other holiday cards?  About how many do you send out?

They're not apparently being asked to stand up and deny Jesus, for heaven's sake.

If it's a public school and public money goes to the school, my feeling is they'd BETTER be inclusive. If people's feelings get hurt because they're a majority and they just can't stand to have any of the minorities mentioned, tough.
Are there any Nationals that consider vacation pay, holiday pay, and sick pay separately sm

rather than wrapping them all into one so you have to use your crummy 10 days PTO to cover vacation, illness, and times of low work?  Doesn't leave any vacation time.

I work every holiday -- don't really mind, but would be nice to have extra pay. sm

When I worked for YOG, we got holiday pay and weekend differential.  I guess those days are gone.  Now, I'm just expected to work every holiday and every weekend and smile and say thanks for letting me be your slave.

I should probably stay away from the boards today ... Guess I'm Bad Mood Betty!  (ha)

Is this Holiday a major one? Clinics and offices closed?

I guess I am out of it.  How big of a holiday is this?  All the kids home from school today?  Post offices and banks closed?  Seems rather quiet work-wise.  Wondering if I should start cleaning the house or keep staring at the no jobs to do in my queue.

Thanks!

To me working on a holiday is a premium service and the IC should be compensated anything

above and beyond the call of duty.  I have charged more per line when working a holiday only when it has been specifically requested that I work the holiday.  If I decide to work on a holiday just because I want to catch up or I have free time, I won't charge extra for that.

But if the client asks me to work a holiday because they need coverage, then I will charge a little more per line, usually just a couple of cents more per line.  I don't understand why anyone wouldn't "dream" of doing this.  I've known computer technicians, electricians, plumbers etc. who charge more for after hours calls and holiday calls.  Why should we be any different?

Ditto this. I'm the family's official "deviled egg queen" for every holiday.
I always make them the day before and Saran Wrap them into my special crystal egg platter, but any plastic or glass dish will do.  How many days until Thanksgiving now?  LOL
My in-laws invite nonfamily members to our holiday get togethers.
The more, the merrier. Besides, most of the other people have nowhere else to go because their families are all out of state or dead. The holiday season is about family AND friends.

As for getting drunk, are they really polishing off several bottles of liquor, or is it just a glass of wine or a beer or two? My family is the type that only drinks on the holidays, but we drink slowly and eat plenty of food so we do not get drunk.

It sounds to me as if you have some issues with your sister. Don't get me wrong here, I'm not saying your feelings are not valid. I am saying that you need to draw some boundaries and detach yourself from her. Maybe she resents having to host every year. I know I do. We spend way more than everyone else does even though it's supposed to be buffet, parents don't watch their small kids, I spend several days cooking and cleaning with not a thank you in sight.

Start some new traditions of your own. Go to church. Volunteer with people who truly have nothing.

We know of some people who turn every family occasion into a drunken brawl complete with injuries, fights and police intervention. Be thankful your life isn't worse! I sure am.
Merry Christmas RadGuy!!! And to ALL of you have a WONDERFUL & BLESSED holiday!!
