You might want to ask your vet, but we had a similar problem with our cat (who was 13 years old), and with him it started right before he had a major stroke and we had to put him down. The vet said he had several smaller ones before the big one and that changes in litterbox behavior are usually due to something going on health-wise. Maybe have him checked out at the vet. Sorry.
