I am always mindful

that it takes years and years for an MT to build up an unshakable confidence in herself/himself. Until that time, it is very easy to make someone feel totally inadequate for any or no reason and there are supervisors who get off to that.

Things that roll off me like water off a duck's back would be devestating to someone without such confidence.  I was fortunate enough to come up in the old school learning in a hospital where it was the usual, not the unusual, for the doctors themselves when they were in the MR department to come by and KINDLY point out an error to you, taking the time to explain what the error you made meant and what the correct terminology meant, then patting you on the back and saying "good job."  If I had my "rathers" the hospitals would again hire a lead transcriptionist who trained newbees the old way.  Can you imagine having a radiologist not only explain something to you but take out the film and actually SHOW you what it meant?  Unfortunately, that kind of training doesn't exist anymore.

Remember we all make mistakes...even doctors.  I recall once I was on auto pilot I guess and I had typed the absolute WRONG med dosage.  The Q.A. person (the way Q.A. should be) called it to my attention by saying, "I think you just killed your patient."  No ranting about the mistake, she knew I knew better.  I said to myself, "What was I thinking?"  Then I moved on knowing it wasn't the first mistake I ever made and certainly wouldn't be the last.

So for all MTs who have so many problems, I feel for you.  This is a DIFFICULT, and these days, thankless,  job and it isn't hard to undermine someone's self confidence.  So the best advice I can give is grow a thick skin, work hard to be the BEST MT and pat yourself on the back.  As for the companies you work for, just roll with the flow and if it is unbearable, leave.  There'll be another street car by in a minute.  :)
