I am going to get a lot of flack for this, but it is

QA people are QA people for a reason, but not, in my experience, the right reason.

Those of us who can MT and make real money (over $25 and hour) would never want a poorly paid QA position, nor do we want to edit voice for next to nada. We CAN do our job and well, why mess with that?

You do find QA gals who are there because they have many years of experience, were outstanding MTs, but their hands and wrists gave out.  To stay employed in this business they go to QA and they are WONDERFUL.  They aren't on power trips and they are usually extremely pleasant to work with.  I have had the gift of being mentored and edited by couple of gals like this.

Most QAs I have come across are doing it thinking they are advancing their careers.  (Just how is very little money at a thankless job advancement?)  They are on a power trip in their own heads and they tend to think they know more than an excellent MT who is in the trenches.  They couldn't give up the typing quickly enough and often have less experience than those they "edit."  They don't notice the drop in income because they didn't make the big bucks as MTs.  I have quit more than one job because of gals like this.

You fall in the group of good MTs who somehow got caught in this loop because of experience and the needs of the MTSO.  Now that you are caught and want out because umm yeah you can hack the MTing and do well and you are not on a power trip.  Of course you don't like it, you aren't getting anything out of this deal at all except that you get to work on accounts you like.

I'd be honest and tell the boss you don't feel you are cut out to be a QA person and continue to MT if possible.  You could switch jobs and be a number in a large company that doesn't care about you (I am a number for one of them and I love it.  No one ever says a word to me they just pay me).  You could ask for more money if that would really make this worth your while, but I suspect that is a temporary fix for a permanent problem.
