The OP asked how she could save on the cost of the CMT exam... SM

Seems to me, someone telling her it's a waste of money just might be the answer to her question.

Speaking of Vista, what companies have asked that we NOT install it yet? nm

save your money...
I've used it before. The software they include on the cd is Express Scribe which can be downloaded for free on the internet.

http://www.nch.com.au/scribe/

I was thinking about buying the All 'n One kit too, but I found that it was cheaper to buy the foot pedal and headphones separately and download the software for free.

It is so they can save money....
If they outsource, they will have 24/7 coverage, no need to pay out benefits, no need to pay vacation time, etc.  This has happened to many, but all that you can really do is either work for that outsourced company or find another job.  It's tough out there!  Sorry to hear that you're being outsourced.  You are not obsolete though, as I'm making more money anyway now than I ever have at my hourly job that I lost after 15 years to outsourcing...
Everyone is trying to save money

Try buying it from Half.com to save a little money.
How familiar are you with word expanders? The book has some great tips for newbies.
Parents - do you have your kids save money? sm
Our children have savings accounts and know that 33% of any money they earn from doing extra chores, babysitting, given as gifts, has to go into their savings account.  Do you have your children save money and if so, what are the rules at your house for this?
Save your money on the 2006 version - why -
I have used the CD version ever since it has been available and loved it, UNTIL the 2006 version. It is very different from the prior versions. It is far more cumbersome to use, is not designed for speed, and was such a waste of time I went back to using the 2005 version and just adding in the new drugs. My comments and questions to Stedman's about their latest version went unanswered. Like I said, I was very pleased with the prior versions and updated every year, but I will never buy this product again unless it is MT friendly, which the 2006 version is NOT.
Sounds like facility is trying to save money by
I have a job where MTs were to put in billing and coding number.  Use # X for emergency admits, except if it is Tuesday and sunny, then use # XX.  That sort of thing. I had no idea what I was doing but figured if Dr was going to sign off on this mess, it was all on him.
I forgot to mention how I save money on clothes...sm

The clearance racks are my best friends - often times I can find things there cheaper than on consignment or at Good Will.

Another thing I do is that I have a friend whose daughter is 1 size smaller than my daughter is, so in return for me giving her the hand-me-downs she will occasionally buy my daughter something new or give me the amount of money that I'd get if it went to consignment, and I don't have to deal with waiting for a consignment check.

If your kids/you like named brand items for clothing eBay can be great.  My sister buys my nephew's Abercrombie clothes on eBay for usually around $10 a shirt - these are shirts that normally sell for $35-45 in the stores.

Another thing I do is that I have a friend who wears the same sizes that I do and we have similar clothing tastes, so we often do "clothes swap" where we'll swap out some jeans, shirts, etc.  That way it sorta seems like you're getting something new.

that is what gets me, how do companies figure they save money overseas...
they pay you 4 cpl to edit a report, and probably the other person 4 or 5 cpl, that is already as much as they pay one American MT. I realize our MTs also use QA and editing, but on average, they must be losing money this way.

maybe the key is to refuse to edit them. what would they do with that? they could not possibly send reports out without us 'doctoring' them up.

we should just not edit them.

I do think editing the VR should be something we will all end up doing.

shouldn't we have some organization to help us make sure we make at least as much as we do now, though. you are only making 4 cpl, who comes up with that figure, and when did that become the standard? who decided that, what is their reasoning, and why do we have to accept it?

we need help here, especially with all the changes coming. what a disappointment the only organization that probably could have helped us (AAMT) has decided instead to become like any other corporation, just make money, period.

we need a VOICE, a single united VOICE...

we should be putting our heads together to try and do something to save our jobs.
I get my dogs heartworm pills there, save a ton of money - sm
I also get my Frontline there too. They save me hundreds of $$$ every year. Same exact stuff the vet sells, just cheaper, I imagine they can sell it for less because they buy it in bulk. Go for the savings, you and your dog will be very happy.
Save your money....there are websites and chat rooms

that are full of messages about scams......research, research and never, ever pay.  These places want you to feel 'rushed' so that you don't have time to really think or check them out.

Good luck and please beware.

Walmart is trying to save the consumer MONEY. It's not all about corporate greed.
Rubbermaid products are advertised. So the costs of doing business with Rubbermaid factor in advertising costs. Now I don't care what brand name of plastic container I buy if the quality is equal. So I buy Rubbermaid's competitor (I forget the name) cheaper because they don't advertise. I also think there are a lot of big executives at Rubbermaid who take a bigger profit each year which once again factors in the price of Rubbermaid.

With the economy as it is, gas prices soaring, interest rates up, taxes up, our pay going down (MQMT), I don't care to subsidize Rubbermaid's advertising budget or their CEOs salary. And I go to Walmart and buy the plastic container that is cheaper because they don't advertise.
Speaking of rip-offs, anyone have any advise on how to get back money paid for a product you never
received?  I needed a Dictaphone C-phone for my job (was using a loaner) and put a note on the equipment board pertaining to this back in May.  A woman contacted me stating she had one for $100 (I only needed the phone, power supply and phone cord).  She said she was going away for 3 weeks and to Western Union the money to her that night and she'd send it out the next day.  I did not like the high pressure and was still shopping around anyway so I told her I'd wait the 3 weeks and contact her then.  About a week later she emailed me stating she cut her trip short but was going away again that Friday (It was Tuesday), I had by this time decided to buy her phone.  I mailed out that day via Priority mail a M.O. for $100.  She was very anxious for the money, and thought I'd sent it Express Mail, which I of course informed her I did not.  She stated that it should be there by Friday and if she did not see her mail that day that she'd have her mom check the mail and then mail the C-phone to me.  After 2 weeks I emailed her as I had no phone as yet, no response.  A week later still no phone, emailed again, no response. Then I called her (looked it up) and she claimed her email was "broken" and she had not received my emails but would email me back as she was on her way out the door to a baseball game.  I asked her how can she email me back if it was broken??? So then she backpedaled and said she'd call me.... I held my breath at that point.  So the next day by some miracle I get an email from her stating her mother had mailed it regular mail, no way to track it, etc.  So supposedly it is lost.  I emailed her back which it appeared she did not get as she did not respond to my questions but she did email me again saying she'd return my money.....again I am holding my breath.  That was 8 days ago.  She is in OK, I am in VA.  If she sent me a refund promptly it would have been here by now.  Now when I call her, she does not pick up, and no answering machine either.  I am planning now to mail her a copy of her email and my response to getting my money back.  I am assuming at this point that I was taken for a sucker and was obviously too trusting.  Right now I don't have $100 to burn (who does?) with my drives to the hospital (60 miles round trip) for my daughter's chemo, doctor visits, etc, on top of only making about 1/2 what I used to make due to the changes in my life right now.  In the meantime I got kicked off the account for which I needed the C-phone for (add insult to injury here) due to problems at the company I was working for, so that does not sweeten my disposition any.  So does anyone have any idea how I can squeeze her and get my money back?  Contact the police there for fraud? Small claims court in OK?  I am a persistent pain in the butt and will keep at her until I get my money back, if it is fraud then she picked the wrong person to screw with, if it is on the up and up then it is unfortunate but she should have insured it to cover her own (and mine) butt, and sent in with a delivery confirmation too....but you know what they say about hindsight.  Any ideas???

US to outsource obesity to India....

Burn-out, carpal tunnel, RSI, obesity,
blood clots in the legs, very high stress to produce fast and still 100% accuracy, years of training... we are waaaay underpaid.
Did you see the story about bake sales/childhood obesity?

From the AP out of Minneapolis. "Study links bake sales, weight problems."

Puhleez. What next?

When are the "Diet Police" going to stop and realize that the majority of the obesity "problem" among children begins at home? Who gives these kids the money to go eat at McDonalds and loads their cupboards with junk food anyway?

Sure my kids like sweets and they like McDonalds, but monitor and moderation goes a long way.

Something tells me that a pencil sale just isn't going to bring in that much cash flow.

Yahaha! Wish you'd been in my conference

There was a conference call

when the new DOE came on board in which she said,"  I will not let this company fail!"  And for the next many months I kept wondering how the complete change in corporate culture which ran me (and I believe many others) off would further that promise.   Now I hear they are very heavily into offshore, which is exactly what happened to the last outfit this woman helped manage.  I gave her time to prove herself to me and what she demonstrated was not anything I wanted to be associated with.

I did try to save the file first but it wouldn't even let me save it.
.
if you really want to know, I suggest you attend an EMR conference..
I did. I was considering selling EMR's for my next career. Omigosh, if MT's would get their fat rear ends out of their chairs and into the real world and see what these babies can do, you would really hear people sweating it.  Every year, the docs that come out of medical school are more and more savvy with computers. I've seen lots of young docs who can type as fast as I can... so be educated and make educated decisions about your future...don't guess!
Is this for a conference, round-table discussion, or what? nm

Anyone here use one of those little earphone thingies, Bluetooth (?), for phone? For conference

Face transplant lady has news conference.. see link

Check out the slideshow under her picture.  Amazing.

Should company pay for time spent on a required conference call? (sm)

My company has been having conference calls on one of my accounts in which they request that you attend (they take roll call) to learn new rules, changed rules, updates, etc. on the account.  This has turned into a real pain because it takes so much time out of your production that day.  They say it will become more "routine" as time goes by because of the volume of the rules, etc.

I was wondering, do any others have had that situation and, if so, have you been compensated for that time?

I should note, I am an employee, not an IC, and am paid by the line.

Thanks!

Really really stinks to fire someone in a conference call for gosh sakes. nm

Make money? I'm not making any money because of my decision. You read my reasoning
You can agree with me or not, but don't make false assumptions please.
You're working to make money, not to spend money.
These people should be ashamed of themselves taking advantage of people this way!
I also blew some money signing up with Quixtar... The only way to make any money is to bug everyone

you know into signing up.  I felt like a snake oil huckster.  I hated it.  I was flushing money down the toilet from the moment I handed over my money.

RUN, do not walk away!  I do an entirely different side business now that I really love (in addition to my MTing, which I also love!)  Find something you're good at and that you truly love doing.  Then make a business out of it.  That's the best way to have a side business.  Selling discount toilet paper through Amway/Quixtar?  Not so much.

The CMT exam is overrated. Don't waste your time & money. Use that money on
paid anymore just because you have it.  There are a few CMT cheerleaders that post to people like you but they are pretty well sucked up into that association.
every question asked on here could be documented in some book. So? cant a question be asked?

Yeah, money, that's it. I paid $20.00 for my dog. Money is NOT THE ISSUE
walk him daily, play ball daily, he sleeps in my office daily while I work. Yeah, I got a lot of money, NOT HARDLY. And, my dog is HORRIBLY HORRIBLY ABUSED because he wears a collar around his neck. It's people like you that make me sick. I am done defending my use of the shock collar. I am going to continue with it and my dog will continue to be pampered , educated, fed, kept warm, and love me for everything that I do for him even when I remind him that his barking needs to stop. So, with that said, I will not respond to any more of your CRAP in reference to the shock collar.
Money is money and most people will do whatever it takes when in need. sm
if you do bring it to the attn of the office manager, why not offer her a raise to compensate. it is obvious she just needs or wants more money than your office is paying her. I agree, it is a free country and although it seems odd, unless you had it outlined in contract, she can work for whomever or whereever she pleases on the side. at least she is typing and not at a strip joint, lol. I see no conflict of interest, she has experience obviously in whichever field you are in and what is wrong with doing extra in that field. i agree with MYOB "nicely" and concentrate on your reports than looking at older reports and seeing who they are typed by.
speaking as the mom of a 15 YOD

TELL THEM!!! This is way too dangerous...tell them pronto! They will thank you and you will be able to sleep at night!

TELL THEM!

Speaking of which...
Great - not only does this guy have a thick accent, he mumbles, not to mention all the coughing in my ear he is doing. I'm only halfway through and have about 20 blanks. Hopefully the second time through will be a little better. Oh, and it's about 15 minutes long. Looks like a three or four time proof to me :-(
If you are speaking to me...sm
I didn't say I am THE BEST, I believe I said I am quite good, because I am. Happily, there is still room to grow and learn for me. It is not yet as good as it will get.

What makes me the "tops" if you will, is that I am willing to share what I know. I am happy to take the time to help ANY OTHER MT who wants to learn. I know a fair amount about Expanders and I share that. I give away my glossary to anyone who asks me for it. Newer MTs who take me up on my offer of help thank me and tell me that they come to MTStars because they don't know where else to turn. Often they are greeted by nastiness and rudeness!
Speaking of which...
...since settlement of the suit, has anyone been contacted by AHDI to see how they want to receive their pittance in '' benefits'' from the settlement?  Or are we supposed to chase them down and demand it?  I really have no intention of pursuing this, but wondering how they are supposed to be distributed.
Speaking of Aruba....
You are EXACTLY right. Good post. We're both going to be crucified for this.
Speaking to yourself? Because I'm not leaving here ... :)
..
Speaking of Nike/Just do it
I heard on some news channel doing a flash back thingie, that a young woman athelete is the one who actually created the Nike Swoosh logo...sold her swoosh sketch to Nike years ago for get this..........35.00, period! All rights, etc.  Must not have had any advise or she'd be rolling in the $$$ for the rest of her life
Speaking of trailers, what exactly does
Eminem mean when he says, "Two trailer park girls go around the outside."  Not even Whitetrash.net had an explanation.
Speaking of information...
I just called the phone company to move some old lines off my property from when I used to have three phone lines here to work.  The lines really hang down low, so it's a safety issue.  The guy gives me the third degree saying that I have to answer his "CI information".  He asks me if I'm married, if I'm employed, where I work, for a relative's phone number, and all sorts of stuff.  I asked him what he needed to know this for since I pay my account in full every month, so he tells me it's for the 9-1-1 system.  Why would they need to know all of this?  He never did set up the service call or tell me if there would be a charge.  Most companies only update information if they think they're going to need to put legal action against someone for not paying a bill.  Mine's paid!
Speaking of MedQuist
I got a check today for $114.60 and I haven't worked for them in over 2 years.  Well, I do appreciate the check. LOL
