I clean houses for disabled at low cost and run errands.

Posted By: sm on 2005-08-08
In Reply to: Does anyone else earn extra money at home doing something along with MT work? - Need some extra cash.

I have several clients and make an adequate amount extra each month for bills, gas, going out, and those other things that POP UP.

I used to clean houses when I sm
needed extra money.  We got behind in bills a couple of times due to illnesses, surgeries, etc. I put an ad in the paper and picked up several jobs that way.
Sun. through Thurs. here. Like Fridays off for errands, etc. nm

Help! My dictionaries ae disabled!

I recently upgraded to MS Word Pro and now my dictionaries are disabled.  I'm almost positive that I worked in Word after the upgrade and they were fine, but this morning they are gone. When I look (Spelling>Options>Custom Dictionaries) I see my Stedman's listed and also a Custom listed which I think may be the words I have okayed (not really sure if that was there before).  They are both checked.  The custom was default so I changed Stedman's to default, but still Word is not recognizing any medical terms and is marking them all - good gravy!  Hoping someone with a bit more tech expertise than me can help me figure out what could be wrong?  TIA!

disabled transcriptions
Thanks to all of you that gave me an answer.  It is for my friend and I will pass on the information as this is something that she really wants to do as being disabled it is much easier working from home than trying to use public transportation in our little rural town.   I will certain pass on you sugestions.
Disabled internet
They were thinking of doing that or tried with a hospital I used to work for. Their rationale was that it was too much of a distraction. Could not believe that! MTs need the search assists on the internet. It just goes to show you how totally out-of-touch they are with job MTs perform.

I am an avid gamer and a MT.  I'm only 30 and already my wrists get sore periodically.  I'm wondering if there is a point where I will be disabled due to transcribing and difficulties with their hands and what to do to prevent it.  TIA for replies
Disabled working
Hey, hang in there. I know what you mean. I have been disabled since back surgery many years ago. I am in constant pain, but I still work for the Pain Clinic. I only transcribe one doctor who no one else wants. That is how I got the job. Company changed platforms and I only make 40% of what I used to, but I still work. I am now 69 years old and will probably expire in my chair. I still am thankful for my job, but I wish for all our sakes it was like it used to be when one could make at least a living wage and sometimes a good one. I praise you for working and not just letting your pain get the best of you and admire you greatly!

and he absolutely cannot make any money other than his disability if you want the full benefits. I think you can work part-time and get part-time benefits, but you will have to check on that. My understanding was they deduct any amount of money you make from your benefits and you would get what was left. But, again, the best thing is to go to the agency or call them and make sure before you do anything, as the rules seem to change constantly, but for full benefits you cannot make any money under your name.
Perhaps, but it's my opinion that someone with 5 houses & an SUV could
SELL something to put food on the table rather that hit up Angel Ministries. I wish the lady well, I really do, but she needs to use her own resources (and seems to have plenty) to feed her family.
houses/tenants
I would suggest what your husband is doing, sell that new house you bought quickly. Also, don't know what state you live in, but in our state of MA if you owe that much rent after landlord has evicted you via certified mail, etc, have 30 days to vacate and then sheriff's constable comes over takes your furniture out and padlocks the apartment. Small claims court will work also. I just saw a program on t.v. recently about Carlton Sheets and how many people have gotten into financial trouble listening and following his advise. You know the saying if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. Hope you sell your new house quickly and maybe you will have to sell a couple of your houses to get out of this mess. There are different agencies out there that will help, but also I think it depends on your income. I have been in financial chaos most of my life, living pay check to pay check. My husband was looking into the Carlton Sheets literature and when I read it a bell went off and I told him, don't think this will work or something is just not right.
I've done cleaning houses and do my dog and sm
my mother-in-laws, prefer doing the dogs as to dealing with ignorant people.  Actually, we'll have a spare room that could be converted to bathing facilities, etc. as it is right above the water supply line. More or less just looking to see if anyone knows of good training schools, etc.
There are transitional living houses available to help.
I too was in your position. My husband would beat me all the time and was verbally abusive. I got started in this business so I could leave him. Luckily, one day while at the ER getting patched up yet again, a doctor took the time to explain to my husband the consequences of wife beating. He looked at my husband like he was pond scum and threatened to have him arrested. He has not hit me since. I wish you luck. There are transitional houses that let you live there with your children while you save up enough money to get a place of your own. They even help with that (usually pay deposit and help furnish). If counseling or talking it out with him does not help, you could try this. Good luck!
I LOVE houses, too. When I go out for a walk,
I like to look at the different houses and pretend I could afford to buy one of them, and decide which one that would be. Also like to look at the yards and see what I would change or leave the same.

My love of 'house-hunting' was born pretty early. When I was 7 my family moved, and I remember the house-hunting process went on for quite a long time. I loved seeing all the different houses! One even had a basement, something you don't see that often on the West Coast.

Even after my parents found a house and we moved, my mom (who LOVED house-hunting) still liked to go and look at them. (She was a total 'lookie-loo!') On hot summer days when we kids were bored, or on rainy days when we couldn't play outside, she'd pack us in the car and contact a friend of hers who was a realtor, and we'd go off looking at some of the more unique homes for sale, including a stone castle 'way up in the mountains. (That was pretty spooky - we did it on a rainy, thunder-and-lightning day).

So, if I were in real-estate, one thing I would definitely be is totally enthusiastic about EVERY house I was selling! But I don't think I could deal with all the phone calls, appointments, no-shows, etc. ESPECIALLY the weekend work. So, I guess I'll just have to keep on looking.

Like you, I like MT and am good at it. I job-hopped relentlessly in my early 20's. Finally got tired of the hiring-and-quitting merry-go-round, and became a Kelly Girl. Pay wasn't the best, but I got lots of interesting jobs, including an architect's firm high up in the hills above Malibu, a race-car builder, a toilet factory, and even Walt Disney Studios. It was a good way to job-hunt, too, because frequently if an employer liked my work, they'd offer me a permanent job.

I finally 'fell into' MT when I was between jobs, as usual, and a relative who did MT at a hospital invited me to lunch one day. We ate in the hospital cafeteria, and afterward she showed me her office (some MTs had their own offices back in those days!), and let me listen to and try to transcribe a report. Of course, my first attempt must've been pretty hilarious to read, but I liked it. She told me to take a transcription course at night school, and the rest is history. I just wish MT could go back to the kind of work it was back in the 70's, when you were considered to be an actual EMPLOYEE, and not just a 'cog in the wheel'.
supplement income by cleaning houses.

Get a few rather neat, clean people who want their homes cleaned (vacuumed, dusted, change linens, etc.,) once a week or every other week.  Where I live it is very lucrative, pays about $20/hour.

If single, check out ads to be a "live-in" housekeeper.  I do this for a business man who is gone most of the time.  I clean the house once a week, cook lunch and/or dinner if he is home, and in turn he gives me run of the house, my own rooms (2 bedrooms, 1 bath for me), pays all utilities including my cable bill, and pays for all food.  I am not required to help with any entertaining he may do - he calls a caterer to do that.  I can have all the company visit that wants - he enjoys my friends, too - but cannot have late night parties or overnight male company.  Not a bad exchange

Sure, there will always be houses to sell. Buyers on the other hand? sm
The whole economy is on paper with nothing backing it anymore.  If banks stop lending, who will buy?
Maybe it's this one. It's nonpoisonous and the site says it is often found in houses when you

I own several rental properties, buy houses and flip them and
own several nationally-known chain restaurants.

Much more productive than pointing fingers at the government and blaming them for any poor choices on my part, most of which are fixable if you stop complaining and get off your butt!
Drug dealers live in nice houses, too.

I know of an "educated" person who bragged to me about buying a house wirth three times as much as my home.  Then we found out her husband had a meth lab in the garage and was dealing in stolen art.  He's in jail and won't see his kids for the next 10 years.  The house was seized, along with their cars, trucks, and hot tub.  We may not have much, but we work hard for what we have.  We don't do drugs, and we'd never do anything to jeopardize our children.

For that matter, go to the law enforcement auctions.  The property they sell, sports cars, houses, everything, was taken from convicted drug dealers.  So, no, meth labs and drug dealers are not only an low income, low education problem.  They're all over, and they make more money than we do until they get busted.  THEM'S the proven statistics.

Don't worry. Modern houses don't have big holes in the floors and walls. NM

I already thought of that, but I hear they aren't worth crap.

have you tried the can of air to clean it?
this is a post I just read:

My Microsoft Digital Media Pro keyboard is quite nice. The keys are all attached to the front of the keyboard. Just unscrew the back and the front lifts up with all the keys. On the bottom part of the keyboard remains the rubber/silicon and circuit board, which can be sprayed off. I then submerge the top keyboard in scalding hot soapy water to clean it.
Nothing to do with MT but does anyone have any ideas on how to clean - sm
a linoleum bathroom floor? All my bathroom throw rugs (4-large bathroom) have left yellow stains under where each lies.  I presume the rubber somehow reacted with the floor.  This has happened in both my bathrooms but much worse it the one which has a window.  Short of replacing the floor does anyone have any ideas? TIA.
Let's clean up our board........sm
While it is certainly everyone's right to "agree to disagree", the mud slinging that unfortunately takes place here is usually not started by anyone who truly wants to get a point across.  I myself have gotten into some very heated discussions over issues related to our profession. But I've never stooped so low as to attack anyone personally.. and the minute the discussion starts getting ugly, I'm outta there!  There are people on these boards with no other purpose than to see where they can start trouble.  They're just looking for attention and the only way to get rid of them is to totally ignore them.
Help! How do I clean out my cache?

I have been unable to access, since last night, a website (Weightwatchers.com) and/or its forums that I go to regularly. I have friends that are able to access it so I am wondering what I might need to do to "clean things out" on my computer in order to get back to the web site.

TIA.

Any way to clean up a BAD dss file??

Doctor dictated despite the fact that he had a tremendously BAD phone connection.  I can only hear a word every few sentences, the rest is loud humming and static.  I have a KOSS equalizer that didn't help at all.  Anyone know of a miracle program or something that might salvage this recording, as he doesn't want to re-dictate it?  THanks!

Does anyone pay someone to clean their house? sm
If so how often do they clean for you and how much do you pay them?   What size home do you have? i.e. 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, living room, dining room and kitchen?
Always a dishcloth and use a clean

one every time.  Right now we are without a dishwasher.  I use a dishcloth for dishes and a dishcloth to clean countertops/table  - or will sometimes use a paper towel.  I also use bleach or an antibacterial cleaner about once a week.

Never, ever use a sponge.  If you use a scrub brush need to at least dip in bleach every day that you use it.

I can't remember where it was, but in the last couple of months I saw a show like 60 minutes and it was talking about how dirty a kitchen is, especially in comparison to your bathroom, and it was enough to make you sick, in more ways than one.

I need help to keep my house clean. What should I pay?
Am thinking 10.00/hr cash of course. Is that too low? My house just needs maintenance (floors, dusting, countertops).
I third the Mr. Clean Eraser. nm

clean environment
Everyone is making great points and I appreciate your comments, truly!  But, paying a few more thousand dollars for a hybrid car isn't really a big deal to me, as I know I am doing my part to help reduce the dependency on foreign oil and also these hybrids reportedly are so much better for the environment as far as pollution.  That is really the reason why I'm leaning towards it, as well as the increased miles per gallon.  Thanks for your opinions!
You have to clean 3 rollers...sm

or you can do what I did, I waited until the Logitech mouse (originally was about $70) came down in price to about $20 or $24 and bought one.  You never have to clean them inside and you don't need a mousepad.

How do you all clean your keyboards? SM

I eat and drink at my desk, as I'm sure most of us do.  And of course, crumbs fall, drinks drip, and there's the dust.  I was just wondering what everybody else uses to clean their keyboards.  I have tried canned air to blow out the crumbs and then use alcohol on the surface and stick Q-Tips down in all the crevices and between the keys.  Just wondered if there was some miracle solution that would make it easier and less time consuming?

Put them on probation and tell them to clean up their act or they
are gone. Too many MTs are looking for work right now to put up with people who don't/won't do their job.
How do I clean my keyboard?

My keyboard is getting nasty down under the keys.  The vacuum used to do the trick, but now some dust, crumbs, and Lord knows what else remains in the bottom of the tray.  If I unscrew the screws on the bottom, will that allow me to lift the top off?

I figured I would ask, because I often do things like that only to end up with the wrong part coming off or nothing at all happens.  (I hate that.)

Any tips appreciated!

I just clean mine with...
a good upside-down shake, a clean paintbrush for between the keys, and a soft cloth with a little gentle cleaner of water with a splash of vinegar and hydrogen peroxide for the top.
Heck, I can't even keep my sink clean

And I hate shoes. I guess I need to be more dedicated. Just working on my hot spots every day would do me a world of good.

And then they'll have clean up poopoo

Do you have a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser???
I don't know if it will work, because thank God neither one of mine have ever done that before, but it does clean a lot of stuff, from walls, to white sneaker, the bathtub.
Do the first account first, clean it out, then move on

I do that, too. I don't like to shower first to power clean
the house because then you get all sweaty with cleaning chemicals all over.

I'm with you. I hate to clean and really don't have time (sm)

I work 7 days a week and used to have a gal come in twice a week until the place got back to normal....then once every 2 weeks after that. Had to pay $10/hour, so had to work twice as hard to pay her.

Finally had to let her go in September last year and the place hasn't been the same since.  Trying to get my savings back up so I can hire somebody again.  I have no closets but 1 in the whole house and no place to hang coats, etc.

I cleaned really good last week and was surprised it only took me 3 hours, but that's 3 hours I could be making money to save up to hire somebody. Everyone in this area are private people. There are no services like Merry Maids.

I second the Mr. Clean eraser motion
My son recently got black permanent marker on my wooden kitchen table . . . amazingly, the magic eraser rubbed it right off. I have used them for textured surfaces in the kitchen and bathroom before also and they "work like magic".
