I completely agree with the advice below. Without your books, Google.

Just be sure that the entries you find are from a verifiable source; you can also access Dorland's at the Merck website (google Dorland Merck and then add to favs).

I travel frequently and have found MT an easily-adaptable job for this. You'll want to get very used to setting up and taking down your computer quickly, as well as making sure you have the correct cords, etc. Seems like a "duh" thing, but... :)

If you have money and inclination, you might purchase a couple of your most frequently-used Stedman's on CD-ROM and install before you leave on your trip. I have the equipment words, surgery words, and emergency medicine words on CD-ROM that I use without having to have the physical books handy.

Enjoy your trip!

Reference books and Google
Google is not always accurate either!!!! In my 7 years as an MT, I find it taking way too much time trying to find the correct spelling of referring physicians or primary care physicians online, especially if you have no clue as to which city they practice in, and when they dictate all these physicians names they want a cc to go to. I also would just like to add that maybe QALady should consider taking the word "Lady" off the end of her name. Obviously no one will ever be as "perfect" as you and I feel for the man you're married to, if you're at all married. If you complain about a few MTs, don't refer to all MTs, do your job, provide feedback, and if those same MTs continue to be sloppy, then the supervisor isn't doing his/her job at all. I'm a firm believer of shame on me once, maybe even a second time, but no more than a second time for the same mistakes. I welcome feedback and print every single report I have had a blank on for future reference. Sloppy may describe some, not all.
Rarely use any books anymore. I use Google.
nm
Thank you, could not find it in any of my word books or Google
xx
Thanks so much for the insight and advice, guys, I really appreciate it, books are informative but
when you are in the at-home world like we are, there's nothing better than getting it straight from people who have been there!
The advice to Google is assuming SM
that the MT in question has half a brain and can discern what is a reputable link and what isn't. Or are you saying we shouldn't assume even that much?
I completely agree
These ESLs work hard to learn the language before they come here, many learning it through their school years, come here and legitimately and legally set up their practices (I haven't heard of any doctors complaining that their jobs are being taken by foreigners), and they still have to fight for any respect.
you are welcome and I completely agree with what you are saying!
it seems that so many like to twist around the Word or leave parts out that are uncomfortable.
I agree completely!!
When I first started typing for MedQuist, if there was a difficult doctor, I would skip over it. As time progressed, the more typing I did, the better I got and didn't want to skip over reports, I wanted to be able to type whatever came up! If you NEVER type these heavy accented doctors, you will NEVER learn to do them. I agree with you "Got the Letter" and am waiting for my phone call!!
I agree with you completely

when EVERYONE criticizes how the government is run and how they do things? Why put your life and those of your family in jeopardy waiting on the government to help you. What happened to PEOPLE helping each other?  People seeing that their elderly neighbors get to safety? People pulling together to solve these issues? Why do so many seem to be waiting to see what the government can do for them??  The government has enough problems!  I certainly would not rely on the government for ANYTHING!  Do these people want to government telling them what to do in their everyday lives?  If so, move to a country with no democracy!

I'm finished for the time being.. but WAKE UP PEOPLE!

I agree with you completely

and believe me, they don't give a patient a discount because they feel guilty. They don't give the employees yearly raises. While they (and the 2 office managers) get their bonuses and go buy brand new cars, SUVs, boats, vacation homes and, yes, even airplanes, they have plenty of employees struggling to make ends meet. One employee (that I know of, a newly divorced woman) recently took bankruptcy and our insurance is so bad that most of us can't afford to even go to the doctor as we have $2,600 deductible for a single person!  I would NOT feel guilty one bit!

I completely agree with you . .
Did you see Tanya Tucker's reality show? I loved that. There's one about roller derby girls and a new one is coming out about rodeo cowboys - sounds exciting to me.
I completely agree - sm

I love it when they say thank you.  It makes me smile every time.  It also makes me smile and chuckle a little when I get one that will laugh at themself when he/she gets tripped up on their words.

I agree completely
Sad but so true.
I agree with you completely!
And now that many companies are cracking down on and checking quality due to client complaints and sloppiness, I would bet many MT line counts will be going down real fast.  Remember, haste makes waste... and slow but steady wins the race!
Oh, I completely agree. (sm)
I've also seen 20-year MTs who proudly announce that they don't know the difference between there, their and they're, and it doesn't matter anyway. (?!!)

It is appalling. But those people also rarely post on boards because it's just a job they put in and they don't usually want to use a computer or talk about work outside of work (in my experience).

Maybe if somebody had let them know differently in the beginning, they would have chosen another career or taken the time to learn the English language.

You are only the second English major MT I have come across, and the other one is the best MT whose work I've seen.

Completely agree
Always have two companies, at least.
i completely agree.
"Assault" may sound nicer than "rape" but it's NOT the same thing. It's the MT's job to accurately record the doctor's words, pretty or not. Of course we may correct grammar but certainly not the meaning of a document.

These are sometimes used as legal documents and that should always be taken into account.
I COMPLETELY agree.
I mean, it's not as though we have nothing else to do! These tests take a long time and unless you have no job, they are much too time consuming. The worst is when you don't pass after spending so much time.

Also, you go through the grammar, etc. and then come to that?!

I think a couple of carefully selected files will tell them everything they need to know about your skill level.

NO. Not lazy at all!
Agree completely. Sometimes I am not even
sure if I am talking to the same person when they do not use their same initials or names with every post.
I agree completely (sm)

As another poster said, our bodies "know" when we have typed a certain number of lines.  Having worked for various transcription companies, I found it difficult to even reach the minimum lines with many of these places.  I feel very fortunate to have found an MTSO that is honest.  Guess what, I am transcribing over 2,000 lines in 5 or 6 hours!  I am saving every penny possible because I know it will not last forever.

I agree completely
Well said. It's been said time and time again there are no grammar police on this board but they're here all the time just the same.
I COMPLETELY AGREE!

nice post!

Exactly. Completely agree.
x
I completely agree with what you say.
However, I think the companies have the upper hand with the fact that we are remote employees who never to rarely actually see each other. If there were ever some kind of group formed to work on these issues, I'd be the first to join....
I agree completely. He is nuts.
But what did I miss with Johnny Depp???
I agree with you completely. It is our government that ALLOWS this
to happen though. My point exactly. Spend money overhauling the system. Make people accoutable for their actions. That opens up money for people who really need it. Also, people here that do not pay taxes and are not here legally, give them the boot.
I agree completely. Especially the line of
"if the company makes money"! I mean, gosh -- that's ridiculous.

I wouldn't stand for it.
Completely agree, Jess.
I could not have said it better myself.

Bravo! I completely agree.
x
Completely agree...you have to do what works for your family.
I wish you the best of luck, and keep us updated! :)
I agree...buy books
The internet can be very helpful, but it is not a substitution for books. I find books quicker to use then the internet sometimes.
I agree. I found him to be very sexy. He'd always take my breath completely away!

I completely agree. I don't care how long it's been a 'tradition'.
It's pure senseless slaughter in the purest form.  Maybe they should have "running of the Spaniards" and see how they like it!
I completely agree. Working alone is so much better than dealing with all that stuff.
x
Agree completely. I have seen some god-awful things in reports.
Things that are guessed at and sometimes even legitimately looked up and searched for, unfortunately not finding the correct word.  I told an MT once, "You can't just type that this patient is on that drug just because it is for the same symptoms.  You have to type what the doctor is saying."  I couldn't believe it.  I have seen some stuff, let me tell you, and 38 cms is the least of it.  I had a supervisor ask me once if I was "sure" that ostial was a term used in a cardiac cath and that "osteal" referred to bone.  DUH!  If I wasn't sure we wouldn't be having this conversation!  Then they get clerks to listen.  Puuhlease!  I'm not even QA and I scratch my head and wonder why people like that are in this business if they aren't in it to do a first-class job.  Once I had a team leader route me a report that she had started because she said her "head was stuffy " and she couldn't hear."   I couldn't believe the report when I looked at it.  Obviously nothing looked up, not even spell checked.  My 15-yo could have done a FAR better job.  Nobody cares.  They are just in it because they think they can still make the "easy money."  It's not bad money, but it's not like it used to be.  And management thinks we can all be so easily replaced by whoever steps off the bus next.  It's very disheartening to me.
Agree completely.....money making scheme....
xx
AGREE--they only do this to SELL MORE BOOKS. nm
AMA Style Guide or Chicago Manual of Style.  Go read all the classified ads for people in editing and publishing.
I agree ~ I like to write in my books, too. NM

Agree with this but disagree about Drug Books, sm
Would recommend the Quick Look Drug Book, but I only buy every other year. The FDA site is good but I like being able to cross-reference generic and brand names and get the dosage information.
I agree - Google
I have not cracked open a book in two years...they are here under my desk, collecting dust. I go to
http://www.medilexicon.com/
alot, or most of the time you can type in the search box and come up with it. There is a new search engine Google is working on specifically for MTs, and it seems to be pretty good. I've used it over the past few days since finding out about it here on MTStars.
It's called Medical Transcription Word Seeker - http://www.google.com/coop/cse?cx=010964806533120826279%3Akyuedntb2fy
I agree, and O'Reilly marketing his books and novelty times
a joke and sad that old folks down in fla watch it and get brainwashed, much like old people get tricked by contractors and other things. I hope I don't lose my marbles when I get old.
I so agree w/you. Look at what Google just did - bent over backwards to

wanting to catch porn sites.

Why does the US always have to be so darn politically correct.  We are going to //politically correct//outselves right out of existence one of these days.  Kiind of like that song that says you gotta stand for something or you won't mean anything.  We need some boundaries here.  *They* won't even let us have a common thread running through our nation anymore of having English-spoken-here to have us be a unified country.  They have fractured us to the point where we DO STAND FOR NOTHING.

FYI I HAVE reference books, but in case you hadn't noticed, thing change a lot faster than BOOKS
I was simply asking for suggestions of other places on line that I might look for the latest info, especially considering that my work is on the internet, what the hell is wrong with trying to be more productive and efficient?!?! Good Grief!!
I prefer books. I'm kinda old school. I like to be able to write new terms in my books. I do

have Stedman's Medical Dictationary on CD and I do use it quite a bit, but that's more because the actual print dictionary is so darn heavy to pick up and look a word up!

I agree with this advice.
You could always use your new single status as an excuse and say you feel like a third wheel, preferring to go out with just her. If she just won't go along with this, you may have to eventually tell her the truth. At the very least, you'll have nothing to lose if the friendship is already suffering.
I agree with you....here is my advice....
Hello...here is some sound advice from a professional MT who is very happy with the line of work they do...check in with your local tax advisor to find out what rules may apply to your state. I know where I live, I do not have to keep up with ALL of that excess that I have been reading about. I keep invoices, check stubs, receipts, bills, et cetera for the things I use with my home-based MT business...the rest is just a waste of paperwork and time for me.
Agree with advice given by others...
Treat this job as you would an office job. Minimize distractions as much as possible, no surfing, no e-mailing, etc. until you are done working. Keep yourself on set hours as much as you can. I think we've all struggled with that 'balance' issue at some time in our career. Once your husband is working, if you are able, work his schedule. The more you can do while the house is empty, the better you will be. Best of luck to you on his new job and your living situation.
Agree with advice below and

be sure your resume is flawless, succinct, and easy to read.  I use bullets in some sections and even clipped sentences to keep it to one page.  You can find a lot of info online on resume writing.  It's pretty important because it will immediately get dumped in the 'round file' if it doesn't stand out somehow or has a lot of mistakes in it, needs to stand out from the rest.  Do you have any other related experience in a medical field of any kind?  Include that... even though it doesn't count towards transcription experience, it will let the company know that you have some medical knowledge and are aware of things thay may not sound correct in a report and that you can think on the fly and correlate everything in your brain while you're transcribing when a doc is dictating something that sounds off, not just mindlessly typing everything dictated.

When you email inquiring about the position, ask if they would allow you to test for them.  It's been a while and times were different then, but that's how I got my first job, asked them to let me test anyway.  If you come off well on personal phone calls, call those who don't exclude calls in their ads.

Did your school not provide job leads or assistance in job search?  Did they provide you with a letter of reference upon completion of the course?

Good luck, it's tough out here these days, but if you can get your foot in the door somehow, like others said in-house somewhere maybe, which would be best, or convince someone to let you show them your stuff with testing... Unfortunately, it seems like pay for this field has steadily gotten worse since I started, with more and more required, so it will probably be slow going for you when you do land a job.  Even the in-house jobs around here are scarce as hen's teeth.  By any chance, are there any small local transcription operations around you that could maybe use a little help?  You could try getting your own accounts, but I think that would be really tough not having any experience and with all the competition and changes in this field.

Good luck to you.  Don't give up if it's what you really want and are willing to devote yourself to it, going to take lots of sweat and tears.  I would get back with my school for sure and ask for some assistance!

Yep, google has it goin on... I really like the google earth...
Have you tried Google earth? You can type in any address, street, city, state, country, etc. and it will zoom in and show the area and then you can hit the + button and zoom right in and see the exact house, building, etc. that you are looking for.
Mainly Google; I google the known words in the phrase (sm)
That's my most frequent tactic if I don't find the word in my word books. I'll play with leaving certain words out and adding them in, in various combinations, to try to get a hit that has a word which sounds like my blank. If I get a hit, I'll Google WITH that word, and see what hits I get, and what their source is (i.e.,checking the sources out for reliability). When I say 5 sites or searches, I mean I don't often try more than 5 different combinations without a serious hit. If I get a hit, then I will spend a little more time checking that out before I give up.

If it's a drug name, I use RxList, or more frequently the Drugs.com website. Since they redid RxList, I haven't found one that has quite as good a wildcard search, but Drugs.com works okay most of the time.

If it's a place name (like when they give names of outlying outreach clinics and etc.) I'll use Mapquest and look up the city my hospital is in, then "pan out" and look at the outlying towns.

Hope that's what you're looking for. I do have bookmarks, but I find that even the ones I think I'll visit again, I waste more time doing that than with an intelligent google search. An example is the time I was looking for "banana bag." The only place I managed to find it with a degree of reliability was on a nurses' message board. I've found quite a bit sometimes on the various specialty message boards out there, but I think the quickest way to locate that is through a search engine rather than bookmarking each individual site and trying to figure out which ones to search for a particular term.
