I connect a larger screen - having two desktops is nice. sm

Just got my laptop cooler with its built-in USB hub, so I am adding other things.

Of course, the greatest thing you can do is take your job on impromptu vacations and not have to worry about approval from the boss.

laptops are no different than desktops.

You most likely won't have a serial port or game port connection on a laptop unless you have it customized, but there will be several USB ports and most everything these days comes with USB connections.  There will be a place for headphones on any computer.  As far as the rest of the stuff it is the same and you would look for the same things as if you were buying a desktop.  I was told recently though that the Sony Viao run hot and that they weren't really made for a mobile type situation.

If you want to travel you have to know all your internet options because you'll find yourself in various situations and your primary option may not be available for some reason, so you always have to have a backup plan.

I just got my 5th Dell---have 2 laptops and 3 desktops - sm
My laptop which I bought used about 5 years ago has been acting up for about a year, so expect it to die soon, so bought a new/used Dell laptop to replace that (use for travel only basically). My desktop crashed last year, got it fixed, bought a backup though about 8 months ago to replace that one. My everyday one finally died right after Christmas. On my backup desktop used Dell now, but this is supposed to be my younger daughters computer (and just my backup for emergencies); so I went and ordered a new Dell last week (with XP though), just got it and plan on setting it up over the weekend. I am very happy with the Dell product. My first one lasted 6 years, my used laptop is about 8 years old and still going though it is dying, my new/used laptop is about 2 years old and in great shape; my backup is also about 2-3 years old but I expect it will last longer than 6 years as it will not be abused like my regular desktop. I am sure I will be happy with the new one. I had a Gateway before and it died after 4 years, so I find Dell more reliable.
EXText Word Client - blank screen everytime I give "ok" in the DIS screen
I am using EXText Word Client software with Transnet. I am getting a blank screen everytime I give "ok" in the DIS screen (patient details info screen). I have uninstalled and reinstalled the software an upgraded but still errors out the same way. Are there any EXtexters who could help?

EXText word client blank screen everytime I give ok in DIS screen
Thanks your suggestion was very valuable. At a specified time (which the technical side say, when the net speed is very good), it is working without a problem at all (whereas this was half working and half not working before even at this time), but other times, still the same problem exists.

Actually the blank screen comes every time I give "ok" in the DIS screen (patient details info screen).
Screen Resolution/Font/Screen Percentage
My eyes are tired all the time. I usually have my monitor set at 800 x 600 pixels and use Bookman at 10 font in Word at 111% in the normal layout. What might be a better viewing screen setting to use?
I also used to connect (sm)
to a company VPN.  Each time I would connect, my keylogger program would alert me that by connecting to the VPN my Keystrokes and possibly screenshots could be monitored.  As another poster said, it is possible that a company could monitor your activity, but they probably do not have time to sort through all of this information.  I think the best solution is to have your computer protected and possibly install keylogger protection.  It is nice to know when your keystrokes will be monitored, then you have the choice to accept or not accept.
how to connect two computers
I am starting with a new company next week and have received their computer.  How do I connect this to my internet (DSL)?  My DH suggested that I would need a router which would plug into the modem and then something would go into the new computer, or something like that??  I am not too knowledgable about this type of thing.  Know how to use a computer but not sure about all that wireless stuff!!  If I need a router does anyone know what kind to get? Or what I need to know to determine what kind to get?  If anyone can advise...Thanks!!
DocShuttle does way more than just connect...sm

although you need to purchase all the components. DocShuttle Administrator will let you set up separate accounts for your dictators, and set privileges for which MT's work on which accounts and do they have QA privileges. Also allows you to upload templates to the FTP site for use by all transcribers. So you have to buy Administrator for sure. DocShuttle Client is for anyone who transcribes (including yourself), it lets you download files from the ftp site. When you click on the voice file, it brings up templates that you choose from. DocShuttle Dictator is for the docs. What I like about Dictator is you can set it to work with the Olympus recorder so that when the doc docks the recorder, it automatically imports to the Olympus program, and erases the file from the recorder. Then DocShuttle Dictator can be set up to automatically, say every 4 hours, import from the Olympus program and upload new files to the ftp site and download finished files. I have found that the front desk girls can sink your account by not being able to figure out how to upload or download files. I just did an install with DocShuttle and you should have seen the doc's eyes light up when he docked his recorder and it all went automatically. Also the files stay in the local box and get uploaded to the ftp site so there's always a copy at the doc's office for back up. It also marks the files with a coded number that includes the date, dictator, etc. And at the end of the month, you can run reports that will give you MSWord data such as characters or lines to you can do a line count without opening every single file. Files can be encrypted if you want.

This program is ideal if you have more than one MT working with you. If you are working alone, they just came out with an email program that would work for just an independent contractor working at home for a doc.

Scott and his crew have worked hard on making DS very user friendly, which as I said, is a must because of the front office ladies. Their support is excellent. Just get past the first lady because she usually doesn't know what she is talking about.

one more word - MAKE SURE you purchase the Dongle. You get unlimited installs with the dongle - otherwise three installs and they want you to buy another license. email me with any more questions - I've been using DS for a few years now and am very happy with it

Internet connect is bad
I have cable and upgraded to higher speed for download and upload, and it seems for every hour it works, the next is cutting in and out - worse is when I stop working the TV doesn't want to - too bad it could not connect to air -
Connect to a system via satellite
Rather than satellite, which can have "weather related" problems and so on, have you thought about a wireless connection? I am out in the country and use a wireless internet card which I got through Spring with a laptop computer. There are also companies that can put a wireless tower on your roof if need be, however, that was not an option for me so I went with the laptop and wireless internet card. I would also check to make sure that the software supports satellite or wireless. Many techs will tell you that it either does or does not.

Hope this helps.
Some companies don't really care how you connect, it all
depends on their system.   If you are thinking of working from home and can't DSL you most likely can't get WiFi either.  If you have a wireless network setup already you can use WiFi that way, but most companies will not allow for using WiFi like at Panera Bread.
How to connect laptop to desktop sm
My desktop will not connect to the internet, no internet explorer working yet my laptop connects so if I can connect to my desktop somehow could I start up the internet that way and download internet explorer to my desktop so I will not get an error message? Confusing, I know, but I did a disk compression and I think that's how it got messed up. A system restore will now be allowed on any old dates tried. It's very frustrating.
Do you like the larger font?

Yes like the larger font. Thanks.

Probably why the larger Nationals have their own
qq
not MQ, not SS, but see, most larger companies are ALL doing this...
everyone is trying to cut costs...

my question is, when the hospitals cut back on staffing (for example, the entire transcriptions departments, most all ancillary departments, nursing, etc.), the salaries/pay for all these Jobst, where did all that money go?

all I hear is how 'broke' supposedly hospitals are etc etc, but with all these cut-backs, all throughout the country, even in government, WHERE is all the MONEY?

why are we now to want all the savings to go to the heads of these corporations (hospitals are now businesses as well). they do not want to share the earnings anymore with employees, and we are supposed to like it?

benefits no longer have to be supplied by employers, etc, and every chance they get they are now making them contingent with hours worked or production...

well, where is all the money from all the savings?

it does not go to the patients (in the case of hospitals) because they do not even get to have nurses anymore, and are pushed out of the hospital immediately before they are even well.

it does not go to the employees, it does not go to the community, because none of taxes seem to go toward community programs much anymore...

where is the money?

why are we made to feel 'bad' about wanting more in our paychecks?

just not getting it here...I am worth every penny I get, and more, and deserve to have benefits and everything I used to have. rather, I am making less than I did 10 years ago in this business, plus less benefits...

sorry to go on about this...for those who are making tons of money right now, you obviously do not have to worry, but I am old-school, I guess. too much has been taken away from when I started...
10 is smaller not larger than 12, so it would be more than 65 cpl- nm

I think mainly the larger companies have

incentive plans, or the companies that have an unfriendly system so that it is hard to get lines, or horrible dictators so that MTs do the minimum and no more.  From what I have seen of the incentives there are a lot of strings attached and a lot of times the company finds a way to get around them, others make the line counts so high that is is near impossible to get the incentives without working 16 hours a day.  My company offers incentives if they get in a bind and get too far out of TAT.  They pay a 20% for any lines over your normal line count, so that anyone is able to reach the incentive level, just how much depends on how much they are willing to work extra.  I am an employee, but the ICs are offered the same incentives.  I have worked for other companies that did not offer an incentive until they got in a bind.

I think some companies try to confuse you with an incentive, so that you think you could make more than 7 cpl, but then the incentives aren't that easy to make and you'd have been better offer spending the extra time living instead of working.

Just connect your external keyboard and you won't know the difference.

You may want to attach an external monitor (I don't) or use a box of some kind to elevate the computer.  They have boxes at the office supply store in the computer area that have trays for storage or a place to put your keyboard and that is about the right height.  I would also suggest an external mouse.   If you need a new keyboard/mouse I'd go wireless.  If you want to be somewhat mobile, like sitting in the backyard in the shade unhooking and hooking everything up gets to be a pain and if you just want to diddle and not work you can use the laptop keyboard and not have to take the other keyboard and mouse.

If you are used to a large monitor that is probably your biggest adjustment, the rest is fairly easy and may take some trial and error to get everything worked out.

NO, you're off. 0.03 x 60 = 1.80 that's without a direct onesuite connect sm

I used them for years. I didn't pay any attention to their rate, above -- but it doesn't matter how fast you type. You could sit there and NOT type, and you're still paying $1.80 for every hour you're hooked up.

And by the way, there are several dictators I'm 1:1 on. Not many though!

Unless there is a network to connect to, you're out of luck.

Basically, you need to have an available network (also called hot spot) that will allow you to connect to the Internet. The card is only hardware, not the actual network.

I was told that it would connect directly - no ID needed. nm

When I connect to my computer via camera or memory

stick I have a menu come up that asks what I want to do, view, copy to  a file, etc.    Once they are in a folder you can send pictures as an attachment or copy the picture to the e-mail.   If you send as attachment when you request attachment it will ask you to search for whatever it is you want to attach, if you want to include a picture in the e-mail  right click on the picture and one of the options that comes up is to e-mail picture.  Just follow the directions.

Yes, a larger font would be more comfortable. Thx! nm

Can't please everyone although we try. The majority like the larger font.

tech help, new wireless router, now can't connect to clients

I am using a wired PC with a DSL connection.  Last night I set up a new wireless router and a laptop.  I had to have Linksys help me so I know we did it how they told me.  Both computers can connect to the internet, but now on my wired PC I cannot connect to my clients.  I have one I connect to with VPN and another over the internet through Citrix.  That one I can connect to initially, but it keeps disconnecting itself.  Help anyone?

Yes. It's called a phone. Connect, dial, and record. NM

Does anyone know how to make the text larger in Word?? TIA
nm
larger text in Word - start by
to preview and select what suits you best. Toolbar should be showing at top of screen, pull down where is says what font type is in there. Otherwise, you can to either go to Tools to select the "formatting" toolbar, or go to View, then Font. Since my old eyes are going, I also choose the option to increase my page view to 150% (also on the toolbar at the top of your screen displaying some kind of number) by dropping down the menu (use the arrow next to it) and select the % that suits you best. Hope this helps.
Making text larger in Word
Ctrl+A to select all text, choose font size from format menu. Also make sure view is at 100%.
Yeah, we just moved and got a larger house...
so we have brought the dogs in the house now. I love having them with us and I know they are loving it, but the hair is just horrible. They are labs too, so they need lots of attention.
Is there a setting on the computer that causes your internet connect to time out - I cannot stay
nm
You need an air card to connect to the Internet. Once you're connected, you can do what you norma
do.  I have Sprint PCS and like their service.  There are different plans you can choose from.  Some give you the air card if you sign up for their better plans.  Hope this helps.
If the home you're visiting has a wireless network, you can connect to that.

When you're there, let the computer search for the network and when it is recognized, connect to it. You will need to enter a passcode if it is a secured network (which it should be). You can save that confirguration to your laptop for future visits. It's really the same process as with a wireless router at home.

Now, if neither router is wireless, you can get a cable from places like Staples that will connect directly into your laptop and the back of the router. You will still need to set up the laptop as described above but, again, that configuration can be saved.

I live in a small town and we don't have Starbucks, Panera, etc., close by but the public library has a wireless network that I can connect to for free; you might want to check into that option as well.

The biggest thing you should be concerned with is that you are operating on a secure network and that information going across the network is at the very least encrypted according to HIPAA standards.

EMRs already in place and working well in larger institutions
The midsize MTSO I edit for uses an internet-based transcription system. Our programmers re-wrote some of our proprietary software so we could interface with one of our clients' (university hospital) EMR system. What it amounts to for us is that the dictator now dictates only the objective portion of the procedure/op note or followup note. The demographics, history, etc., are already in the record. In other words, what used to be a 150-line job is now less than 50.
keyboard shortcut/make letters larger
Somewhere I saw a simple keyboard shortcut that would make the letters in a program appear larger without changing the font size. I have a program I have to access at work and the letters are hard to read, but I'm not allowed to change the size. Does anyone know about this? Thanks!
If starting with a larger service, yes, you'll get training... sm
...sometimes one day, sometimes 2, 3, or more days, depending upon how much depth they go into. You should get account specifics for your account(s), as well as their expectations as to style, procedures, etc.

Of course, the depth and quality of the training can vary, both with the company and with the trainer (and, to some extent, can be determined by the others in your training sessions and how much instruction they need).

If starting with a smaller MTSO, I have no idea what to expect; but, with a larger company/national, there's usually a couple of days plus a period in which you're on 100% QA so they can monitor your output and let you know what you may be doing that needs changing, etc.
Softer touch, clicky, yet larger size keyboard.
Don't know if you'll see this, but you may want to try the "cloned" IBM keyboard by the company I mentioned previously. It is the same size & layout as the IBM, "clicky", and yet there was a subtle difference in the "touch". I felt it "was" a "softer" touch compared to the original IBM. Wish I could offer a better explanation, but it's such an "individual" thing that it's hard to describe. What is comfortable for me may not be for you. I have the one I bought from them years ago boxed up for repair, so I'm just recalling this from memory. Haven't used it in quite a while, but do remember I did get comfortable with it in the interim without my IBM keyboard.

Oh - the memories - I'll never forget the "mag card" & how the part-time worker at night never failed to wipe out the "negatives" I had stored on "certain labeled" cards everytime she worked at my desk :o)

Well - if I do run across another keyboard I think you might be interested in, I'll address it to you as "me" & hope you'll see it.
I don't work for one of the larger nationals, but a good-sized national and

in 5 years the hospital system has been down twice and my company wasn't able to pull work and the company's system was down once for a hurricane and once the power was out for part of a day.   I never went a full day without work.

I think maybe some of the nationals are poorly managed and they use "server down" as an excuse for no work.  For a company that depends on their servers for their livelihood I don't believe they actually have the much down time.  I don't think most companies pay for downtime.

Most larger drug stores carry a selection of OTC braces and will order others, too. nm

How nice is this keyboard? Nice light touch?
I have a regular Microsoft ergonomic one now but I'm thinking I should probably get a replacement and use mine as a backup.
I was nice today, and people were nice to me.
If you steer away from the nastiness, there are a few nice and encouraging posts in there.
I am getting the LCD screen. Do you like that screen.

screen
yep! Only had mine for about two months now and just love it. sooo much more room on my desk, and alot less glare.
I'm getting the same screen here and I need a job!! :) nm

PS - Your screen name is the BEST.
We need more posters like you on this board... two thumbs up! :)
TES Screen is ...
the screen where the patient data is entered (name, DOB, acct #, ref. physician, etc.)

Anyone have a similar problem as posted above?
Screen shot
Can someone tell me how to make a screen shot of whatever is on my computer screen?  Sometimes it helps to have a screen shot when contacting the IT department for help.
Lagging screen
Have already checked with them.  I have my own new computer and don't use any of theirs.
