secret shopping
Have you found any shops that will pay you more than $10.00 or less? I haven't!
really? made more money as an MT?

Wow, you must have had your own accounts independently then, right? It seems with some of today's trends in the MT field, that the pay will be not as good as it was, or harder to make equal to or close to what an RN would make.

I have made SO much money doing MT,

if I were doing it over again I would have finished my degree (which I am doing now).  I have been an MT for 25 years, as a hospital MT and an MTSO.  The money has been very good.  Being able to be home with my kids through the years was good.  But in other ways being home has been bad - for one not being able to walk away from work and leave it at the office.  I feel like I should always be working because there's always more money to be made.  I know over the years I have thrown 100% into my business and home/family have suffered.  I really think that other than being physically available for my kids, my home life was better when I worked in a hospital - because then when I was off work, I was off.  I came home and started dinner and cleaned the house while it was cooking and settled in for a relaxing evening.  Now I am often still working at 6 or 7 p.m., fast food dinners, house not cleaned, etc.  Yes, it's POSSIBLE to organize yourself so that you take care of those things too when you work at home, but I think for a lot of us we get into a rut.  I feel psychologically healthier getting out of the house, etc.  Which I am doing now that I am back in college and I will never go back to just being at home full time again.

Another downside - weight gain from being sedentary!

there is still money to be made in this sm
business. But, after over 30 years as an MT, I would suggest that you PLEASE work in-house in a hospital for 2-3 years before you ever come home to work on production. The schools are not telling the students this information and they are doing their students a great disservice.
I made my best money doing ER. Granted,

I got 13 cpl.  But the doctors said the same things over and over and there were I think only 6 or 7 ER doctors for that hospital.  I worked 4 hours a day, 7 days a week, and made $1000 a week.  Loved it!

T-chart changed all that.

While I have made great money doing MT,

if I had it do over, no I would not go into MT.  I would have finished college and gotten my degree instead.  I am back in college now to get my degree, but it would have been so much better if I had done it years ago.

I agree with the MT who says after 25 years she is working harder and making less.  It's the same for me.  I am getting burned out after all these years, I can't type the long hours I once did, I can't see doing this for another 20 years.  If the money was there like it used to be, that might be different.

made more money 15 years ago than I do now. nm.

Is there "bad" money to be made?
Just wondering in this economy if anyone would say, "Oh no, sorry, that's bad money." Unless, of course, it's the world's oldest profession which sometimes I think pays way higher!
Oh my goodness! They should quit then - if no money is to be made.
......
The most & easiest money I ever made typin'

was for a hospital that had all these kickass "normals" for OP notes.  The docs would say, "Please use my _____ template" and that was it.  Some ortho templates were an instant 100+ lines and they took mere seconds to zap in!  Those days are long gone for me but I remember them fondly.

I knew they made good money...
I used to work for Kaiser in California. I really wanted to get on with the transcription department but there was NEVER an opening. I really miss working for Kaiser. I have not been able to find a hospital like that since I left. I now live in GA. The Kaiser here is not the same -- much smaller operation here. But I knew it, I knew it!

:)

I charged by the gross line and made more money that way.

So if someone isn't rolling in money, they have made a life choice mistake
and are living in squallor?  Uh, I don't think so.  If you're not an MT, why are you even here?  You certainly aren't a very helpful or happy little elf.
Sickest thing, I made more money my first year as MT as I do now, for working
zz
Money, money, money, mmonnneyyy. Singing the Apprentice song.
:+
i made $15/hr before and didn't stay long because i made so much more on production. sm
that was with full benes too. i wouldn't do it for less than $20, but i think even with $20, i'd want benes. are you in-house?
Nothing is being said. How can something this big be a secret?
dd
the secret is

You need to have an extremely good memory.

Whether you use SmartType, Instant Text, Shorthand, Fast Type, or follows all of the suggestions books such as "When The Name of the Game is Keystrokes," or www.productivity.com. It will always boil down to having an extremely good memory. Without one, you will never have a high line production when you use the keyboard. --- Knowing how to write macros and templates certainly helps.

Anyone who says otherwise is not paying attention to their own capabilities.

No secret
I work for Spheris and it's certainly no secret it's a 24/7 company. The Indians are busy transcribing in a nice building Spheris built for them over there while we sleep, ha-ha. When I have PC troubles at night, an Indian tech usually helps me through it. Such is the way of the world, whether we like it or not, our business is global. Again, I think that thing you saw was somebody's blog, and I had no trouble whatsoever with my PC after visiting the site several times.
I don't think it's really a secret...
I think it is more of a preference.  Many people don't want to learn to transcribe OP notes because it is difficult in the beginning.  It is the same with ER reports.  Difficult in the beginning, but easy to make lines if you wait it out and learn.  Anyway, most MTs already know this information, they just prefer to transcribe other work types.  I don't think it's a big deal to talk about it.  If you are great at what you do, you have nothing to worry about.
The secret is...
SHE'S LYING.
Share your secret, PLEASE!
Who do you work for? I used to do that, but got a crappy account now. I miss those paychecks.

You have every right to be happy. I'm happy for you (and jealous LOL)!
Oh please, it is not top secret information.
She was just helping me out.
Ok, here's the Big Male Secret...
We want y'all to think we're helpless and can't do things so we can get out of doing stuff. It works, too! :)
Big Male Secret
It's not a secret, Rad Guy. We just let you think it is.
Shhhhh - it's best to keep it a secret.

Did you ever think of telling the person that hired you?  Daaaaaaaaaaa.LMAO

Exactly! Thanks! It's not secret Rosie is the man
in that relationship! Did you hear too that the View ladies per contract are not allowed to cut their hair without prior approval! I wonder if they just added that recently since Rosie is coming on board - picturing that buzz cut she had and all. LOL!
The secret to a good fit.

Make a list of what you want in a job.  What do you want to earn and how can you structure the job to conform to what you want?  Platform or no platform?  Do you want to work from a pool or get a dedicated acct?  Don't settle for someelse's idea of a great job.  Pick your job, don't wait for a job to pick you.

Next, do your homework.  Peruse the job sites and see which jobs have the characteristics you are looking for.  Research those jobs.  Research how other MTs feel about that company, keeping in mind that one person's dream job could by another's slave labor.

Never leave a job until you have a replacement up and going. Try to ask the pertinent questions before testing.  The recruiters I have dealt with have been more than happy to answer key questions, thereby saving company and myself wasted time.

I would love to know the secret...
I have been at this for nearly 9 years now, and working my tail off for an average of 6 hours per day, I still only clear $18,000 per year at 8 cents per line. I have had a good account, so that can't be it. I have worked for 10 cents per line, and really I did no better in terms of lines per hour. I do use expansions. I work without breaking. I can't figure out if it is me or if there are a lot of exaggerated income stories out there. Really, there is no way for me to ever know, is there? I just keep plugging away and hoping for better. Sometimes I swear there is a secret to it, but I just can't figure it out.

Perhaps I just suck?

Trade Secret...sm
There are basically three tests of a trade secret:

1. It is information that is not in the public domain, i.e. is exclusive to the company.

2. Its exclusivity is regarded by the company as providing a competitive advantage or some other benefit of value.

3. The company takes reasonable precautions to protect the information.

Within these parameters, a "trade secret" can be just about anything that a company decides it is, including customer lists, business plans, methods or processes of production, marketing strategies, hiring projections, you name it.
Moneymakers tell us your secret??

Any of you who are making 17 dollars or more an hour in an 8 hour day at the line rates that are posted - and I have ever see posted is jobs that pay about 8 cents a line or less.  Please share with us your secrets.  A lot of us have been doing this for 15 years or more, and cannot do that in 8 hours.  I have a hard time believing it.  When someone says how much they make in an hour, or how many lines they do per day, it is the assumption that that is in an 8 hour period since that is what the general population works on a full time basis.  My point being, is that it is misleading to people saying that you can make 20.00 to 30.00 an hour at 8 cents (I am assuming 8 cents a line, maybe I am wrong) if you are working 10 hours or more a day.   If there is a way to do this please tell us the secrets, because seriously we  would truly like to know.  I would also like to know who pays 10 cents a line anymore.  How do you find them.  I cannot - I have searched and searched.  We need to all stick together and be honest, otherwise I say let them send it overseas.  There are kids in high school making more than some of us.

Shopping for me.
aa
Try shopping around
There are a lot of lenders out there that will finance less than perfect credit. There is a lender who can probably give you a higher interest rate, then within the next couple years, get your credit score cleaned up (there are lots of tips on how to do that on the internet) and refinance to get a better rate as soon as you can get your score up. Be careful paying anything off that is on your credit report if it is getting ready to come off. That will leave it on there for a longer time. Get on the internet and read about your credit score and what you can do.
Sorry, that should be: No shopping FOR me, but....

shopping

Don't you always have that ONE gift that you have to search high and low for?  Well, that's me today!  An oriental rug (with particular colors of course!) for my brother's new house!  Especially here in Texas where is it 68 degrees, it's hard to get in the spirit!

SUV shopping

We are going to start shopping for a used SUV, less than 20K, probably 2003 to 2005 depending on model.  Leaning towards Ford or GM models, mid size, but right now open to most anything.

Can any of you who own SUVs comment on what you own and what you like/dislike about it?   TIA :)

Shopping around...

Hi Everyone...I am new to this board and would like some advice from experienced MT's out there! I have been working for a company for the past three years and things aren't quite panning out to my satifaction lately. I'm thinking of applying for other jobs with more benefits. Here's my question - What do you guys do when you aren't happy with your present employment? Do you list your current employer on your resume? Okay....What I'm getting at is this >>>>Will my present employer be contacted for a reference check, etc. should I be considered for another job?

Any help would be appreciated...Thanks!

SS....does that stand for secret service?

What do you want them to do, talk in secret code?
:+
Seriously? Must be a big secret. I find it very depressing and
very difficult.  New terms constantly and staging, etc., are written differently
I don't understand the secret santa? nm

Secret Santa Question
Is the secret post usually on the Main board or one of the ones above the ------------ line?  I tried searching this morning, but don't have time to puruse all of the different boards.  I was just wondering if you could narrow it down a bit.  It's okay if you can't just thought I'd ask.  Thanks!
of course; Spheris Healthscribe, not new, no secret
nm
Yes. It's no big secret. They talk openly about it.

When they try to keep what they're dictating a secret...
... from the people having the LOUD conversation right next to them. Guess they never figure out that they are also keeping it a big secret from ME. I keep waiting for them to yell SHADDUP! but for some reason they never do. Sometimes I am half tempted to just transcribe the background conversation instead......
Shopping for my home.

shopping at Wal-Mart
Our Wal-Mart Superstore is supposed to be ready by October and it is only 20 blocks from my house.  It has been open for about five years and now they are turning it into a superstore.  Im ready.  I know some of my political friends ask how could I shop there as they dont have benefits for their employees, LOLOLOL, heck, my trans company does not provide me with any benefits either..so, sure I feel the employees pain but I need to provide for my family and that comes first..I cant wait till Wal-Mart Superstore opens, then I can do my grocery and department store shopping all at once while my car is being serviced in their automotive area.
Thanks! I do most of my Christmas shopping
Love the fact that I can work and shop at the same time! And it's all delivered to me!
