MT, my sister had just started doing MT for a local hospital, and was learning on the job. I was a temp. office worker at the time, couldn't really find anything that was a good fit. My sis thought I'd be good at MT, and I came to visit her at work one day and she let me listen to and try to transcribe some tapes that she was already finished with. I liked it, so went to night school to learn medical terminology. I was offered a job at a transcription company (using mag-card typewriters back then, which were the 'latest thing') and have been doing MT ever since.

Never learned it? Hah! I learned it and still didn't like it.

Oh one more thing..if your traveling and staying at hotels, plan ahead. I learned the hard way.

A hotel that states they have "internet access" does not necessarily have it in your room. A lot of them have what they call a "business" center where they have like a community computer to share with other guests or to have access on your laptop you need to sit in that room. I dont know about you but I dont feel like dragging out all of my equipment and sitting in a lobby somewhere to work. Double check that they have internet access available in your room.. and be forewarned that most chart for wireless internet access like maybe $10-12 for a 24-hour period. We just got back from Vegas, and to me, it was worth that fee for a whole 24 hours. I got the most work I could out of it.

We didn't install ours, came with the house, but I learned...
something today... If it's bitter cold outside and your woodstove is keeping your house warm, the water in your pipes (if you have steam heat) can freeze anyway because the thermostat never calls for heat and the water sits and can freeze in the pipes that are close to outside walls.  Other than that danger, it's great.  It never got over 15 today and our house was a gorgeous 75 degrees.  You have to keep an iron kettle full of water on top so it will boil and put some moisture back into the air.  Some people are bothered by wood stoves, but fortunately we are not.  Also, I would get a stove with a blower on it (we do) to help push the hot air out into the room.
Didn't plan to
I got into this about 5 years ago when I applied for a coding position at a hospital.  They filled that but called to see if I'd try transcription - they were willing to train.  I like it way better than coding and wish I'd got into this field a lot sooner.
you don't have to buy the business plan either - at least I didn't... nm

I learned along time ago: My house, my rules. sm

I have been through the wringer, trying to keep my two older kids away from "bad influences."  But I have learned.

When they were younger, I simply said, "You can play with so and so outside, but he's bratty.  If he gets bratty outside,  he'll have to go home."

When they were teenagers, I simply set the "House Rules".  Abide by them, or out you go.  Funny thing was, the friends were more compliant than my own kids. :)

If my older kids brought a friend over to stay the night because he/she was "fighting with mom/dad,"  I'd say, "Sure you can stay, but not until you call your mom or dad and tell them you are here and that you aren't going anywhere and that you are safe for the night."

I heard on occasion, "Didn't your mom say NOT to do that?"  I guess I had more "control" than they had at their own houses and they felt good about having some limits.

My son who FINALLY moved out at 19 had a few new friends that came over one night and, as they were leaving, they said,  "We'll be back around 10:30!"  I said, "Sorry guys, this place closes at 10:00 on weeknights."  They didn't come back.

I have 2 younger ones, 14 and 10.  We have a pool.  My pool rule?  No towel, no towel.  You can swim, but you can "drip dry."

Funny thing is, I've collected well over 2 dozen towels in the past 2 years that I have no idea where they came from.  If it were me, the minute my child came home, I would have said, "And where is my towel?"  Some parents just don't stay on top of things, if you know what I mean.

I learned a long time ago to now talk

At one time I would have let it slide, but now I've learned I can't afford it or

sorry I didn't have time to thank you, but I didn't forget!!

You're confusing the new QA plan with the new pay plan. New pay plan is still completely under wr
Shhhhhhhhhhh....
Time to confront them and ask what the future plan is and if it includes you. nm

Didn't tell them, but I'm on it all the time
and they haven't said boo.
I'm TRULY, TRULY SORRY. I DIDN'T take the TIME
to LOOK UP a fairly hard to spell word, just posted on a board, not at work, MIND YOU. SEND THE SPELLING POLICE AWAY, I GET IT. I've heard what's been said. I'LL CERTAINLY BE MORE CAREFUL NEXT TIME!!!!!!!
Didn't see last night but saw the first time and...
remember having that same feeling.  Couldn't believe the husband was doing her work as if anybody could do it.
Yes, it just didn't help to be unemployed for 2 months at that time.
We got a shutoff notice for Christmas with snow on the ground.
sorry, didn't realize there was a time limit. I
personally just read some of the posts.
I am originally from the NE too
I personally would not live over in Tampa as it is a military town with the bars and fast food joints and some very nice places to rent but very pricey for what you get.  In Clearwater I paid about $1,000 for a 3-bedroom apartment in a nice area.  Management could have been more on top of things but we were going through the "let's go condo" phase and as a result of the economy and many other factors, a lot of flippers got burned.  If you get out of downtown Tampa or even downtown Clearwater there is much that is affordable to rent.  When we came here it was not lo continue to live in the city .. we wanted water nearby and so we came to Pinellas County.  The commute is doable and many of the hospitals have incentive programs on top of their hourly rates .. the service I am with pays production, shift differentials, and has better insurance than a rather large hospital employer!  You just need to have some time to look around and get a feel for the area and not trust real estate people.  They just want a lease or a sale.  Moving anywhere new is just a mess .. with luck I won't have to do that again in a while!
Sorry, I meant didn't have to do it at home full time

This is what I went to school for originally.

The degree was called medical records technology at the time (1976).  Now it is called health information management.  After graduation you took an exam to become an ART (Accredited Records Technician).  Transcription was a part of the curriculum.  I am not sure that it would be now.  My first job was in a physician's office.  Hospital coding was all that was done at that time.  Right after I went to work, coding came to the physician's office.  I coded, filed insurance claims, transcribed office notes, filed charts and completed records release requests.  I later became a  CMA (Certified Office Assistant) just by taking a test.  Doing all this in a physician's office was not very profitable compared to transcription.  That is why I ended up as an MT.  People who went to work in hospitals did a lot better.

I'm from Las Vegas originally.
My siblings go through new relationships every 5 years. They've been married and divorced at least three times each during my one marriage. It's almost as if many of the people in Las Vegas think nothing of marriage and commitment. I know it's a generalization, but maybe there are more fish down there to play with? My brother's wife just walked out on him after he put her through college because she met someone else. My siblings don't hang out in bars or gamble or anything. I don't know why they keep meeting up with users.
Originally from Albany, but just moved
to California and missing NY very much!
I'm in Cobb County. We were originally....sm

supposed to have started Monday but so many parents beat up on the school board that they delayed it a "whopping" 2 days.

At least our school board didn't get by with spending the $100 million on laptops for students!   It's a shame it took a judge to block them and put an end to that nonsense.   Speaking of which, I would expect that Apple will be having a huge sale on laptops soon since they've been blocked from selling the 63,000 laptops to the school system!

It is called The Weight, originally by

Keiser College originally and now....sm
Due to her having a full time 40-50 hour per week job, she only does college in the evenings.  *S*   Education never stops until we die anyway.
Except that when QA screws up originally correct
That's the whole point of this thread.
I am fairly new with my company and I tried the control Y one time, and it didn't work, so I thou
into the "global" normals, I will play with it again and give it a try. How long have you been doing transcription? Have you stayed with the same company for a long time? I worked at a clinic for 6 years, hospital for 8, and now this new national for 3 months.....I hate feeling new!
Originally I was going with a hat from Fredericks of Hollywood of all places BUT- sm
then I changed my mind when I found a veil I loved at a consignment store about 2 months before the wedding. So I returned the hat which I had bought about 8 months prior to the wedding. They were real good though and took it back (plus I told them I'd prove I hadn't gotten married yet if necessary). Glad I went for the veil instead of the hat though it was 90 degrees on the day we got married in June....hot!
weren't these shoes originally called...sm
to me, crocs would be made out of crocodiles (I do live in Florida *LOL*).....what you all describe sounds like the *jellies* my daughter wore when she was 10 or 12.
I'm an on-site, hoping to work at home soon. I originally (s/m)
got into MT for the flexibility, but over the years on-site MT where I work has no flexibility at ALL. They stand there all day looking over our shoulders, monitor our bathroom breaks, and even go into apoplexy if there is a gap of more than 30 seconds or so between finishing one report and starting another. Who needs THAT? And the OFFICE POLITICS.... OMG... I'm so sick to death of office politics, power struggles and back-stabbing. I would rather do ESL doctors all day long, by MYSELF, in the peace and quiet of my own home, on a flexible schedule so I can go outdoors in the daytime once in a while, and maybe get enough exercise that I won't become fat like all the rest of them in my office. After being an MT for more years than I care to admit, I know that money isn't EVERYTHING. It's not always how much you have, but how well you MANAGE what you do have. So at this point in my life, I'm ready to have fewer dollars in my wallet, and more peace in my life.
I am talking about the QA plan I dont know what the new pay plan is.

Learned something

I never thought that many peole would want a transcript of a show especially when it was availabe of DVD or tape.  That is why I did not think it would pay that well.  But I learned something and always glad to do so.   The last seminar that I type did not involve medical at all but was building a chip for a computer and all oriental speakers and so when I think my docs are bad, I remember that.  Lots of blanks needless to say.

Have a good day and thanks for the compliment but all I know is common sense and practical sense through years of doing this.

I learned that way too, but now

has anyone learned that their QA
person is using an outdated BOS ?  I can hardly believe anyone taking their position seriously would do this.  Am I wrong to be amazed and disappointed?
I know what you mean...you'd think I would have learned

my lesson in season 2.  I would love a Taylor/Elliott finale, but I really don't know what to expect.  You'd think Taylor has a big enough fan base to put him through, but after last week, I feel like anything can happen.

yes that's how I learned

how else to learn specialties?

What I have learned from VR is
that it does take an experienced and alert MT to recognize when a mistake has been made by VR. If the MT is editing too quickly or too careless when a mistake has been made by VR, and the incorrect term does sound close to what the doctor is dictating, the MT may not realize there is a mistake in the report that needs editing. This could be very dangerous if the doctors do not proofreading their reports carefully after they are returned to the system as complete.

Unless the VR technology improves substantially from where it stands now, I believe there will be gross errors not caught, which may lead to poor patient care and possible litigation.

I have been a MT since 1981 and have witnessed a lot of changes in this field. VR may appear to be an asset for medical personnel, but it may prove to be a detriment for patients. Sorry to come across as negative, just my opinion.
what I learned...
one can put 30.000-40.000.

Only if it is dictated 'between' 30.000 to
40.000, then write 'to';

or from 30.000 to 40.000.

Also AAMT BOS 2nd edition
Have learned
Have learned from talking with IRS I can become a Sole Proprietor and get an EIN. Nothing changes as far as filing and paying taxes, same as an IC. Sorry if this posts twice.
I took this course too. Learned how to
build my own computers. Never pursued a career in it but am planning on doing so if MTs goes downhill completely.

Does your course include networking too?
I learned that
disc was for the body and disk is for computers. I go by whatever the account spec says.
Well of course we know that now. Back then we didn't because he didn't allow unfettered access.
c
right we children didn't tattle to the administrator did we. BTW, didn't you think we were &#
because some half-witted idiot said everyone was jealous because some other anonymous poster said they were going to be a doctor. Didn't they call it doctor envy. Oh yeah, that was all about you wasn't it busy-body MT. You with your degree and premed but yet you still post here and acuse others of jealously. I dunno but you and dano seem so close, I can't put my finger on it but I would say you could be computer clones. Jealous indeed. Children indeed. I think you are blowing your covers) dano and busy body MT. This whole "jealously" thing makes me think that you may be one and the same poster.
I didn't go into labor until 2.5 weeks later, so it didn't work. Sorry!...nm

41 YO here, learned on the job 22 years ago(sm)
and still love MT.  I do acute care, clinic, whatever they throw at me.  Started out in a hospital in 1983 and went home/nationals in 1996.  Been working at home ever since and have no desire to go back in-house.
I have learned something!! I never knew this was possible!
I've always thought liquids damaged/ruined keyboards, but I guess I was wrong. What a good idea you all have!!
learned (not leared)
sorry
My beagle has learned
not to lay near the foot pedal, but just to the side of it. It's the darn cat that won't stay off my keyboard. He'll even lay on it while I'm typing, and knows I'm going to boot him off! I think he likes the attention when the kids are at school and DH is gone to work.
Does anybody out there sew regularly. I have never learned
how to sew and I want to learn.  I am going to take some classes here at a local craft store, but my question is that I want to buy a nice sewing machine, not top of the line but not a cheapy either.  I can always upgrade later if I need too.  Does anybody have any recommendations on a nice, easy to use sewing machine that doesn't have so much crap on it that I would be totally confused.
From what I've learned from...
doing psych reports, people rarely have MPD unless they've been abused horribly.  First off, I wouldn't blame this poor child.  Her life has obviously been unstable and erratic, no thanks to her parents.  I type it time and time again.... Kids are brought in and labeled with all sorts of conditions, ADHD, oppositional defiance disorder, OCD, you name it.  And WITHOUT FAIL when the doctor gets down to the social history, the child comes from some sort of broken erratic unstable home.  The parents don't create a nurturing environment for their child, parade boyfriends and girlfriends in and out of their lives, and then the poor child is labeled with a dozen diagnoses.  Sounds to me like this poor child has been abused, which isn't very far fetched if a mother is recycling boyfriends.  I'd contact a local psychiatrist and start from there.   I wouldn't take one person's word that the child wasn't abused.  Even if she is lying, she's doing it for some reason.
I learned it exactly the opposite...
back in 1980 I learned that disc was for the spine and disk was for anything ophthalmological ......
Yep, learned that the hard way, but then when I
told them I was looking things changed and now I'm down from about 95% ESL to about 60% and for the most part they aren't horrible.
