I use the rule of thumb of never buying a first-yerar car model and the same with a new OS. There have been lots of reported issues with Vista.
You can still get XP on a new system if you get it from the actual manufacturer. I know that Gateway, HP and Dell have them available. There are some decent deals since these are the "old" models.
