 I had the same exact problem when I started using Express Scribe and I too use a laptop.  These were instructions sent by my employer.  Maybe these can help you.  Keep me posted.  Good Luck. 
   
 Click StartClick My Computer
 Select Tools
 Select Folder Options
 Select File Types
 In the Registered File Types field, highlight the applicable audio file
 type (i.e., extension WMA(1)(2))
 Click Change
 Select 'scribe' from the program list.  Note: If 'scribe' is not located
 in the program list, click Browse and navigate to C:/Program Files/NCH Swift
 Sound/Scribe, select 'scribe', and click Open.
 Click OK
 Click Close
