I have drainage too and a ton of ear wax! YUK! I lavage my ears with a bulb syringe and warm saline

about once a month or they will start to itch something fierce.  Nobody tells you about the ear hazards of being an MT, do they?  I also have to deal with recurrent bouts of labrynthitis which my doc has said may be a side effect of ear phones in my ears all day long!

We should get hazard pay or worker's comp!

You betcha! Sounds great! Though I would prefer warm champagne to warm milk, OK??
I'll be waiting...just honk twice! I'll put Dr. Mumble Mouth on hold, and dash away before he's done chewing and swallowing...
A $14 goose-neck lamp from Target, 40 watt bulb. SM
I have used this little lamp for years in the colder months. It has a nice opaque cover so doesn't give any glare. I tilt it way down so it is pointed right over the keyboard. Keeps my fingers toasty.

For my feet, I use one of those electric lap throws, right over my feet, the foot pedal and the big wooden shelf for the foot pedal that my sweetie built for me.

I don't like to heat the whole house and run up the bill so I try not to turn the furnace above 60 deg. My two little warming devices keep me really comfortable.

Mine is sinus drainage. Ugh.
Nothing I can figure out makes it go away. It hurts and I'm deaf in my left ear right now. A few more days, I should be right as rain, it is April!
Actually it is D5 0.25 normal saline

DECONGESTANTS. Your Eustachian tubes are plugged by drainage or
by swelling, and you could get a REAL nasty earache if you can't get the swelling down and the nose/sinuses drained. Lots of HOT fluids to make the drainage thinner. Chicken soup. Tea. (Rum and coke?) just kidding, that would hurt.
Looks like you got it right....D5 quarter-normal saline....n/m
x
can someone help me please... how is D5 quarter-normal saline typed?

TIA

Thank you for the warm welcome!
I will look forward to chatting with you in the future.
Thanks for the warm welcome and the (sm)
warning. I think that is one thing I have learned while surfing the net, trolls exist just about anywhere you go, but my opinion is this site has that very much under control:)
I'm all ears
I am totally frustrated myself and so ready for a change. Trust me, I can relate.
Me neither! Ha! We must both be missing something! Maybe we should try the warm
milk? Blech...sounds gross! Actually, I'm just getting rolling now - my morning - so am having coffee! If I were to have sounded irritated, certainly my irritation would be 100% to the dang fool recruiter who pulled this "faux paus" on the poor woman in the first place. Now, if you want to get me irritated, just get me yamming about recruiters...currently my FAVORITE people in our industry...I can't find the appropriate face-thingie to express pure disdain....How about, PEW!!
Menopause keeps me warm.
Be a 52-year-old woman and you will have no trouble keeping not only yourself warm, but radiating heat to those around you.
During warm weather I do (sm)
but when it's cold my fingers shrink and my rings start spinning around! That's when they come off.
Warm Hands
Or how about a heated wrist pad for in front of your keyboard?

all they want is a warm body?
NM
I warm my feet.
When my hands are cold, I warm my feet. Not sure why that works, but it does! I have an electric heating pad under my feet (type barefoot or in my socks) and it warms me up. I also have a blanket I crocheted and that helps too.
warm hawaii
it will be my first time living in hawaii-any advice? are you getting your own place out there? I'm in the freeeezing cold smack in the middle of the country right now so I am also looking forward to escaping!
Protect ears where you can
I recently bought a new blow dryer that is louder than my old one. I have started putting cotton in my ears while blow drying, and it muffles the high, painful whine. I suddenly have more patience with styling my hair, so I guess it may have been bothering me before this, too, and I didn't realize why I could hardly wait to finish.
definitely UNFAIR. You are our 2nd set of ears and still MTs. NM
.
OMG - My ears are always itchy - I actually
have an "ear itcher" that I keep on my desk - kinda gross, but what can ya do. I thought it was just me. I don't think I could go without them though, I work too much and my ears get sore. I guess I'll try Radioshack and Staples, if not, I guess I'll get them online. Thanks
You could use headphones that go over the ears
over your hearing aids, such as the noise-canceling headphones. I would assume this would work just fine. I don't like to wear my noise-canceling headphones because they get too hot, however.
My aching ears

Hi everyone!  Just wondering if you all have suggestions for inexpensive headphones that don't hurt your ears, but have good sound quality.  I have 2 different ones that I use and I prefer the sound quality of my little "bud" type, but they end up really hurting my ears after several hours of use.  The other are much more comfortable, but I lose sound quality.  I guess I'm looking for the best of both worlds -- oh, and inexpensively, too!!   (I don't ask for much, huh?)

Take care all!

I think it's because it is warm and cozy, like a crate. sm
My first cocker loved it under my desk and you couldn't get her out of there. I won't let my new cocker get in that habit because he won't leave my toes alone. Luckily, the golden thinks it is too hot in my office and seldom joins me. That's fine because he is always panting and that just heats the room up more.
Your welcome, Canada :) You snowbirds keep warm up there.

How is THAT warm water? hmmm? LOL..nm

Keep your hands warm! Even if it means your (s/m)
body temperature feels a little too warm, better that than cold hands. Athletes don't do their thing with cold muscles and joints - if they do they risk injury. Same goes for the muscles and joints in your hands and wrists.

If that fails, I get pretty good relief with Aleve.
and most of them have cellphones stuck in their ears. nm

Unfortunately, it will fall on deaf ears.
But give it a shot.

hears to ears through to threw
Sorry no wonder you are so down on being a Transcriptionist as it is evident you have problems spelling.
magots in the groin and ears....

Ears now beat red and they are off for good.

My ears are not beat red and killing me.  I love the NC and they help quite ambient noise even with the feature off but wowzers.  Back to my cheapos for me.  I may try the Koss headphones and see if they are any better.  Hubby is not working so he gets to do all the running. He is going to kill me.

LOL Actually, I've got a husband and kids that keep me warm.
They're all "heaters", meaning they get very warm when they sleep.
The beach, anywhere. Warm and sunny and lots of fun!
But, Niagara Falls is always beautiful no matter what time of year. It's actually cheaper to stay there in the winter than the summer.

You gotta pick anywhere where you can just focus on each other and let the world go on without your for a night, a couple days, a weekend, maybe a week (yeah right) whatever.
Cool staff. Thanks for the warm wishes.
Hope everybody here had a good Mother's Day.
Not all have the warm and fuzzy feelings about mentors
I learned transcription inhouse in a hospital when I found out about a person being able to make more than just their salary each week by being fast and that I was. I thought it would be a piece of cake, hey I had worked in hospitals, both adult and children, doctor offices and the like. It took me a year of her training before I was put on incentive. My boss (mentor?) got upset with me 1 time and put me on 3 days work a week when I had been working full so then got a parttime job for those 2 days until the boss lady HAD to ask me to return. Their work was heavy in the first place, but that was what she did. Another time she told me after a person typed over 50 minutes a day (I was the only 1 doing this out of about 6 or 7 transcriptions)that then that person would stop and do paper work. I told her that would not work as it would only apply to me and I would have to go further up about that. Lastly when I left after 7 years working in transcription I had an outgoing evaluation and she put down average (instead of outstanding, superior) for attendance and told her I had not missed 1 single day of the last 3 years and she would have to give me the best mark on that if nothing else. She said she really had not checked her records. I am glad I learned but warm and fuzzy, not here. Reading above noticed you said only 2 more years until retirement. What is that? I am past retirement age now but this Friday am due to start drawing full social security payments. I am so excited and hope to continue working as the money will be twice of what I am making now. Sooooooooo excited.
I have real hearing loss (30%) in both ears and
was recommended to get 2 hearing aids, but did you ever price those things? 1200 for one? So I got one. I barely use it. I can't use it for work as it isn't small enough to accomodate the headphones. But since I got on DEP, the only good thing about it is the voice comes through the speaker right into my headset so I actually have to turn it DOWN. I was evaluated and wanted to hear so bad that it was work related but they say mine is congenital, and with a little digging into my family's history I realize that it is. I do know plenty of MTs, however, who do have credible hearing loss with no other factors. I mean, come on, how could you not? The secret is to keep the volume as LOW as you can stand it to try and avoid any loss. I also have terrible ringing and think that is job related.
My daughter is 17 and has never wanted her ears pierced!
She has always been involved in sports and would have to take them out during a game or put a band-aid over them. I wanted that to be something she wanted, and she has never wanted her ears pierced. For prom we bought clip-ons and they looked pretty nice. I was afriad they would be tacky. She might want to get them pierced before next prom but, again, that will be HER decision.

snot suckers, in our ears, like they don't know we hear that

40 degrees in August? Where do you live? Even Alaska is warm now.

You can proof the yeast by putting it in some warm water...

with a teaspoon of sugar.  If it starts to bubble within 10-15 minutes it's still alive.  Otherwise, it has died and will not breathe it's bubbles into whatever you are making and you'll get no rising.

Next time you buy yeast, stick it in the freezer.  That puts it to sleep, and it will last years.

Get a cloth damp with warm water and wipe
it, if that doesn't do it, spray a citrus-based cleaner on a cloth and wipe it with that.
I use SoftFlex gloves to keep hands warm, and I have Raynaud's. (nm)

I use golfers gloves..thin and keep my hands warm.

orlando bloom(lord of the rings without the elf ears)
thin crust pizza that has bacon and green olives only on it and corona with a lime and salt.
Harder on my eyes than my ears but I find it hard to

believe that listening to dictation could cause hearing loss.  Blasting music through headphones maybe, but not dictation.  I've been doing this for 20 years and have not noticed any difference in my hearing.

However, my eyes get soooooo tired.  I've started zooming in to make the print look bigger and that helps a lot.

Once a week, I clean my headset ears with alcohol.
Then swab out my ears after showering with Q-tips with alcohol on them. Keeps the itching down to nothing, and the ear wax doesn't build up that way, either.
Ears itch b/c of ear sponge bacteria (mine did)

Take off the sponges and clean the actual headset with rubbing alcohol damply applied to a towel, then replace the sponges.  Do this periodically.  Also, replace the sponges every month or so, especially in hot weather.

I have a pair of the earbuds (cheap ones) and they hurt my ears.
I couldn't wear them very long.
That's what I was thinking, Eat bread or drink something nice and warm to help dissolve.

My ears are feeling so horrible that I can't stand the feel of my headphones.
I have URI symptoms, saw the doc yesterday.  Has anyone ever not used their headphones and used the speaker instead.  I'm concerned that I won't be as accurate.  Any suggestions for me?  Thanks.
Actually it's years to ears. I can spell just fine, just don't take the time to proofread eve
post as I'm busy transcribing at the same time.  Sorry to say my priorities are such that you guys here don't rank perfect posts.  Now, if you guys want to pay per post....
