I believe it is better than the generic internal sound cards. I was lucky and found mine for $25 in a WalMart bargain bin. I still plug my headset into my speakers, although you can plug them directly into the Soundblaster which also has its own volume control. I do that sometimes if I have some really awful audio. I never installed any of the software for audio conversion. I just use it with my wav player.
