I have seen VPN used

It was used on my computer at work.  The IT person on the other end had to have my computer's unique address or number and establish a connection.  Once the connection was established an icon displayed in the bottom right corner of my screen.  They literally took over my computer.  I could see my cursor moving and watch everything happen even though my mouse was not moving.   

I also know that a trial version of internet monitoring software was briefly used at work.  This software tracked every web page you visited.
