First, it IS true there is a shortage of QUALIFIED MTs in the US. Qualified is the operative word here!

I work for a national. I can see the old reports from other MTs. HELP syndrome in pregnancy. Caudad heart catheter. Mediolateral meniscus tear. I could go on all day as these are the routine errors that went right to the hospital.

I QA PT. Well paid MTs who can't do a thing right. I have one who swears she is verbatim and has all this experience and SHE IS ALWAYS RIGHT except that if I listen from one end of the report to the other, she didn't type what was said, in the order it was said, and many of her terms are incorrect. She actually spelled "uncircumsized" the other day. What on earth?

POOR POOR quality of MTs out there these days. They are not "qualified" in the true sense and turn out crappy work. Those of us who can turn an educated ear to any specialty and nail it at 99% accuracy or better, AND show up when we are supposed to AND get our line counts...we are getting to be very rare. My national has over 400 MTs and we have about 20 whom you could call "qualified" by the definition above. Sad, but true. The company refuses to offshore, which is wonderful, but they are suffering from lack of adequate MTs.

Justification for offshoring? Perhaps, but certainly justification to turn out better MTs and work with the ones out there who are not truly capable.
