I loved being paid for production/quality as opposed to being with the co. since

the beginning of time. And those long timers that I worked with tended to produce the least work and dish out the most criticism. I felt like a work horse and was paid half of what the 10 plus years on the job MTs in-house were. This created hostility, needless to say.

As a new MT one should not worry about production but quality. A lot of MTs old and new sm
don't take the time to do the work accurately.
quality versus production
I would say they are keeping you hostage with this 99% stuff. You should be reading as you go, then spell checking and move on. Try making some more $ that way, then if your quality dips slow down. We all make mistakes, we arenot machines. It sounds like you are afraid to have amistake and itis tying up your hands. Don't you love how these companies work??? They get you one way or the other.
If you are not paid on production, does
it really matter??? You are not losing money by doing these other things and if that is part of your job description, then you have to do it.
Nope. Not if I'm being paid production.
If I'm being paid hourly I'll do that, but they can't have it both ways. If they expect us to do that, they can pay us for it.
Paid production/hourly

To those of you who are paid production (other than MQ) - are you limited to working 39 hours a week? I don't understand being paid by the line, yet being treated as an hourly worker. Just curious as to whether this is the norm at other places.

Do you get paid by the hour or production?
`
are you paid by production or hourly?
nm
If you're paid on production, SM
I'd very strongly recommend buying a program. Looking things up in a book takes so, so much more time, and wild card searches are the pits at very best.
We are paid on a production system,
a tiered system determined by # of lines per pay period, not per hour. With each tier reached you get an extra 0.05 cpl on top of your normal cpl. Minimum line count per pay period (2 weeks) is 12,000 lines. Not at all hard to reach. The cap is 2 cpl above your starting cpl.
Exactly what happens when paid by production. Complain to all the companies sm
thay pay on production.  The bottom line is the dollar.
Depends on whether you are paid hourly or on production.

If you are paid on production, then I wouldn't even spend five minutes researching a physicians name because it's the MTSOs responsibility to make sure have up to date physician lists available to you.  Nothing irks me more than starting a new job with an MTSO who expects you to hit the ground running, but gives you very little to start with!

If you are paid hourly, then I would spend up to 10 minutes trying to figure something out.

Switching Around Accounts While Getting Paid for Production
Appalled, I understand what you're saying, but there's another side to your point that I think you didn't verbalize quite well enough for MT30+ to understand.

When the employer, who is paying you for production, or even the employer who might be paying you hourly, asks you to switch accounts frequently, the employer is also going to suffer. When you're not typing up to your potential, she's not profiting as much from your typing either.

Let's say the MTSO just got in over her head with backlog and needs more staff. It does take time to find and hire new staff. But if the MTSO doesn't do that AND QUICKLY, then the MTSO is going to be suffering from the learning curve of the MTs she's asking to pick up the slack in the meantime.

Everybody suffers when the MTSO doesn't staff adequately in advance for new accounts, not just the MT.

On the other hand, if the MTSO anticipates a new account and hires in advance, then everybody suffers again because they start seeing the No Jobs Available message from overhiring until the new account kicks in.

It's a very tricky business when you're taking on a new account, hiring new people to staff it, and trying to coordinate it all so that everybody stays happy.
It does exist; however, not everyone makes the same. I am paid for my experience and quality. nm

Yup, it's fact of life when people are paid on production..SM
I hate cherrypickers too, but part of me wonders from a devil's advocate point of view, what if everyone just refused to do the crappy dictators? Maybe they'd be forced to clean up their act. Because when you get right down to it, CRAPPY DICTATORS are the main problem causing cherrypicking, NOT the MT.
Nope. We get paid production too. Unfortunately, hourly QA is out the door.
They are fewer and farther between than you could imagine. AND, for those of us who have been fortunate enough to be paid production (I'm one of the unfortunate CBay editors who was fired just before Christmas.)
Production-paid employees have different laws and regulations. nm
nm
well, we ARE on production. And paid according to what the account pays. Have rates gone up? sm
You (supposedly) get a percetage of what the account pays.
We paid hourly with incentive for high production. So she's making money when she's just
sitting there.  I don't know if it is a habit or not because this is the first time I've really had to work with her for any length of time.  I usually only work a couple of hours a day with her when our shifts overlap.  I think I'm definitely going to ask the girl I'm filling in for what she thinks about her.
As opposed to Commie News Network?
x
I prefer software as opposed to looking it up in reference books...
I like the Stedman's word books software that you download on the computer and when you want to look something up you just click a button versus getting the book out and looking for it. I seems much quicker to me.
Hahah!a! Funny typo: not quality 'scAre', quality 'scOre'. LMAO!...nm
nm
We have a gunite pool as opposed to vinyl/sand liner..
The gunite is definitely more expensive, but lasts much longer.  I'm in NH and I see signs for gunite pools starting at 19,900 around here, but I have no idea what that includes. As usual, the advertisement and the actual cost out the door are probably too different things.  Also, expect your electric bill to hit the roof even if you run the filter only 12 hrs out of 24.  But it's worth it to us... Our kids are pre-teens and virtually LIVE in that thing, so we don't regret buying this house.
I think that depends on the quality. Do you honestly think there is good quality just throwing every
MT on any account like they are. I also think QA has been told to not waste a lot of time on blanks so I think the hospitals are getting a lot more blanks. I certainly have more when I get in a hospital I dont know and they talk 100 miles an hour.
I thought quality was a given. Speed and quality are not mutually exclusive. sm

I maintain 99% accuracy above on my reports.  However, the original question was regarding personal preference, and I have stated mine, and I respect your opinion as well.  :-)    I do think if I was working in an office or hospital setting, the setup you mentioned might be more profitable in the long run.  There are too many interruptions and such when you have other people running in and out, phones ringing, etc.

I doubt that anyone but me really cares about the lines per hour it takes for me to do a report.  They just want an accurate report in a timely manner.  I take pride in my work, and would never just slop something out for the sake of the almighty buck.   And, as an added incentive, I work for 2 companies, and one of them has my name on each report.  I don't have a problem with it, but I did think it was a bit unusual at first.

Oh well ... I must confess that what I'd TRULY like is to be paid lots of money to just sit and play Battle Phlinx on Pogo all day long, but as of yet, no such luck.

For QA consulting I'm paid per hour; QA instructing (college) paid salary, QA editing paid per li
I am an IC and work for two different MTSOs as well as instruct at a business college.
if mt paid 9, editor paid 4 or 5...how can company charge 14 and make it..sm

I know the going rate in our area is 14 cents per line.  As MTs most companies here pay us 8 or 9 cents a line.  Now add in the Editor rate at 4 or 5 per line..you are paying OUT more than you can charge a line.  How would companies stay in biz?

Unless all work is sent by the company overseas at pennies per line, this would not pay for a company.

just curious how this works out

But how much are the US EDs gonna be paid? Typically this work is paid at 2-3 cpl. nm
:+
You don't get paid an hourly rate you get paid by line - sm
so because of how you are paid (not an hourly rate) you don't get OT, especially if you are an IC.
I would move on. I think it is so unfair not to be paid for spaces! I think we should get paid

per keystroke, but that'll never happen.  I just think that these national companies are going to keep finding ways to cheat us.  I found a job working for a hospital as an employee, paid hourly plus incentive, and they let us expand everything!  Somebody's gonna have to kill me to make me give up this job.  I will never go back to the national's again.

I feel for you though.  I know that for us MTs those good jobs are few and far between and some have little choice but to work for the nationals.  I just happened to luck into the job I have now.  I just applied at the right time.

Good luck to you whatever you decide.

If those companies paid a fair wage, and paid more
all came out equal, people wouldn't feel the need to try to make up the deficit by going for the good stuff. I actually prefer the harder, juicier reports. But I can't make a living doing only that, because the pay is not commensurate with the difficulty. So even though I prefer not to, sometimes I have to pick up some of the easier, more boring 'line-o-matic' reports just to make ends meet. Tell your MTSO to make it work their while, and MTs will stop taking all the easy work away that you obviously would prefer to keep for yourself.
You wont show UE being paid because it is employer paid -
the employee will never have to pay this.
What you "should" be paid and what you "are" paid

sadly are two very different things.  Good luck on demanding more..because someone else will just come along and take it for what they offer and they know it.

10$ late if invoice is not paid within 10 days. At day 15 work stops until invoice is paid. Hardly

I LOVED IT. . . .
And had to forward it to all my "crabby" friends.
I loved my cat too and still do
I had to put my 18-plus year old cat to sleep 2 months ago.  She was with me since she was born.  She had end-stage renal failure and for a year I had to give her three times weekly infusions of Ringer's.  She was actually really healthy right up until the end though and used to boss the other 2 youngsters around.  I miss her every day.  She went with me back and forth across the country.  I know exactgly how you feel.
I did and loved it - sm

She came every other week and charged $15 and hour. She would spend 4 hours and she was a white tornado in those 4 hours let me tell you.  I loved, loved, loved having her.

Unfortunately, i had to let her go when i moved into rehabbers paradise. No sense in paying someone to fight a losing battle until rehabbing is over say in about 10 years :(

We did that too, my 2 loved it too! - nm

My mom loved them and had many of them -nm
throughout the years, so I grew up with them. They are nice, though I put my hair in a pony tail so I can see. Started out with an old Plymouth in the 60s and ended with a 2003 BMW Z4 (very nice). They only time it was a drag was in an unexpected rain storm, though now you just push a button and the top goes back on....until her corvette (1 car before the BMW) we had to do it manually, so stop the car, pull up the top, lock, etc. Also in the summer, very hot seats...carry towels so you don't scald off the skin on the back of your thighs, butt and back, though cloth seats would help with that problem, and obviously don't leave anything in the car you wouldn't mind losing (i.e. stolen or blown away). They are fun though, I hope to get one myself one day but content myself with driving with all the windows down now. Have fun shopping.
TFS! Loved it
I need that laugh!!
Loved pet...
I had to put down my Andi (poodle mix dog) today.  Last night I came home from church and found her on the door step apparently hurt.  Brought her to the vet who kept her over night.  I went in this morning but she had multiple fractures and had to be put to sleep.  I don't think I will get another pet.  It's too hard when you lose them.
yes, i saw and loved the

was wondering if the walking tour is only a group tour or is there a map and written directions so that one could walk the tour alone (or with a friend, etc.).

the MT info is good but i am much more interested in NY and seeing it from an *insider's* point of view.   i know that is not the purpose of the blog but maybe you could do something on that line regarding NY??

I used to do these too! Loved them! sm
They were long and kind of boring in my opinion, but I made a LOT of $$ and had a GREAT dictator.  he was so great, in fact, that he transitioned into doing his work by voice recognition without a hitch.  I truly miss that account . . . :(
Loved this. (nm)

Yes, loved it.....sm
Yes, I used it for several years and loved it. It does not have its own expander, but I used InstantText with it quite successfully. I hardly ever hear of it any more. Do you mind sharing what company still uses it?
Loved it
Who still uses this program????  It was great.  Does not have its own Expander but I used Instant Text and it worked great!!
Loved it.
Where did you find it? I am thinking to change mine.
LOVED the job!!!!
I worked for this company a while back & loved the job.  I say to anyone out there reading the same rubbish I did, use your own judgement about a person/job and don't let bitter faceless people influence you otherwise - and THEY talked about being rude?!!!  If I wasn't forced to give up the vet op work (family reasons), I would never have left!  New clinics kept opening every year, and the owner always did her best to keep me informed and made my job as easy as possible!  Some people prefer to work for large transcription companies, but I prefer to work for smaller companies, where you are recognized as being an indvidual that is an IMPORTANT member of the team.
Loved it!

I enjoyed reading this post.  I guess it was that punch line that really got to me LOL....

Your real-life doc kinda reminds me of Dr. House on TV, though Dr. House seems to have become more contrite during the last 10 minutes of the season finale.

I've always thought that there could not possibly be real life docs out there like House, at least not ones who would be allowed to see patients, but now I am not so sure.

Have you ever thought of a second career in which you take real-life experiences and fictionalize them, send the scripts to the people who make movies and TV shows?  I think you would be very good at that.

LOL! Loved your response...
the guy would probably burn the whole neighborhood down just to be sure he got the one who did it!  I really wished there was something I could do, though. I loved your graphics.. That's exactly what I feel like doing!
I loved it. Very moving.

I had one when I was inhouse and loved it! sm

I just wish I could afford to get my own right now. It takes a little getting used to, but not too bad and it's soooooo comfortable.
