Maybe we should print copies of this letter, stand outside hospitals and clinics, and hand copies of it to patients as they're leaving. Or else put it on their windshields in the parking lot.

I've said it before and I'll stay it again, there is absolutely no added worth to being a CMT.

It is a waste of nearly $300 and it serves little or no purpose.  You maybe get a penny more a line from a handful of services.  That's it.  Does it sound like it's worth it to you?

Furthermore, you'd be giving your hard earned money to an organization that advocates offshoring American MT jobs.  They even recently were asking American MTs to volunteer their time and pay their way on a $4000 trip to China to train the Chinese to take our jobs.

Then there is the whole problem with the ever-changing BOS.  Just when we learn their rules, they go and change them on us and make us all pay 90 bucks for the newest edition.

Uhem, sorry.  This subject tends to get me fired up.  The short answer would be -- No, it isn't worth it at all.

My 2-cents worth....
In my opinion, any time you transcribe in only 1 specialty, you only have to focus on only ONE area. It might be boring but your productivity will increase. While working for a big national, you could have 100s of dictators. In a hospital setting and with only one speciality, the number of dictators is fewer and therefore you become more accustomed to their dications. You should be able to create "macros" "expansions" or whatever your system allows for repetitive dictations. Good luck.
Here is my two cents worth,
This is my opinion...you need to say, I am working between this time and that time and try with everything in you to stick to it. Finish at your appointed time and then spend some time with your family. Your husband needs to help you on his days off; that needs to be a part of the "deal."

Maybe you could make more money if you didn't have to worry about keeping your house clean... could you ask for a housekeeper once a week?

I have 5 kids and it was very hard to get myself organized for a long time...and to be honest, it is still not easy by any means. I find that my whole life runs better if I do stick to a schedule the best I can (stuff does come up though). I lay out their clothes the night before and think about what they will eat neatly and quickly for breakfast. I try to make the next day run as smoothly as possible.

Since yours go to a babysitter three days and are home when hubby is, he really needs to help with them during your set work hours, and then you could take time afterward to do something as a family or as a couple, or maybe he needs some alone time too. He needs to keep them out of your "space" so you can get finished, just as if you were working in an office outside the home.

When mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy...so take some time to plan how you want your life to be on a daily basis. Strive for it. Everyday will not be like you plan, but you will feel more like you HAVE control when you TAKE control. You cannot do it all on your own and no one should expect you to. I have felt that very same way many times, but there is only one Tami and she can only do what she can do in a 24 hour period, nothing more. Just make the best of every day so you get to spend time with your family because that is what it is really all about anyway!

Just my two cents worth!
Have already sent my 2-cents worth

on the subject.  Found this address for him:  oreilly@foxnews.com

I stress heavily the security aspects of having all our personal info floating around Indiastanippines.  Anyone who posted a comment under TravelinMT's newspaper article might want to send O'Reilly a variation of that.  I'm all for pouring on the heat and letting everyone possible know about this.  Sent Glenn Beck the scoop a couple of days ago:  me@glennbeck.com.

Vive le revolucion!

My 2 cents worth
The other posts are spot on about AHDI selling us down a river, but most of the hospital jobs that allow you to work at home as an employee give preference to CMTs in the application process, so if you are looking for a position like that instead of working for a national you might want to consider getting it. It all depends on your employment goals. Good luck!
accounts - plus my 2 cents worth

I started doing part-time when working at a hospital as an Admin Sec/Assistant as docs were unable to find decent transcriptionists.  Went to full-time as my hubbie was a trucker and gone a lot and started in 1989 full-time.  At first did brochures/flyers to offices, subcontracted to local companies.  Then they started coming word of mouth.   I have not added an account for 5-6 years as have had enough but recently one of my favorites passed away and so will be adding another after Chrisitmas.   Have thought about expanding more with more IC's but I really have trouble finding people that are dependable and realize that sometimes work comes first and it is my name out there.   Since I am a small MTSO I can only pay 8.5 to 9 cents per gross line but all they do is type and I print, deliver and pick up.  My oldest psych account has been with me since 1988 and my latest since 2000 so they stay with me.  Pay on time, treat me pretty well and so can't complain too much.   My last mailing, mailed out about 90 to 100 flyers and got 5 phone calls and 1 account but again that was 5 years ago.

Some of you have to realize the cost of running and maintaining a business.  Though the doc gets $50 to $60 per office visit, more with labs, but think of their overhead in the office.  Also lots of times they only get 60 to 70% of what they bill out.  They not only have to pay me for the typing -- 35 to 40 lines,  (3-4 dollars) but the receptionist, billing clerk, nurse and themselves.  So the docs are not getting rich and I again say it is the insurance companies that put the squeeze on them and causing a lot of them to look for cheaper ways of doing things.

My two cents, for what they're worth.
Leasing never worked out for me simply because I put too many miles on a car at that time just going back and forth to work, etc. It did, however, work out wonderfully for a friend a mine who lived about 2 miles from work, took one car trip per year, etc. In fact, she came out great at the end of her lease and leased another one. She will probably buy this outright at the end of its lease.

Now that I'm no longer traveling for work, I would very seriously consider leasing were it not for one thing. I have now built up value in my car and it's simply not the best option for me.

Two ways to look at this thing.....good luck!
taxes -- see my 2 cents worth

To many variables -- are you married, what are your deductions, etc.  See what was held out when you were an employee and match that amount.  Your SS will be 7.5 more but some of your deductions can offset that.  Buy a copy of Turbo Tax and do a planning sheet on what you have made this past month or expect to make.  I pay very little but then I contribute a lot to my self employment pension.  How long have you been an IC -- i f just starting won't have to worry for a while.  But without knowing your entire financial picture it is hard to estimate whether it be 10 or 15 or 20%.   I pay less than 10% but that is because I have many deductions.  Look at last year taxes and see what you paid.  If that is what you are estimating on making divide that into quarters or monthly.  If married have hubbie over withhold.   Again without more info we are just guessing.   Patti

My 2 cents worth here (smile) ...
It's one thing to have a perspective as an MT, new or experienced, saying that the generalizations from MT Pundit are true or not (and I take his/her comments as generalizations, not true in every situation).

However, when you work with an abundance of both experienced and new MTs, it is very different. You really do see the trends being referred to in this thread.

For everyone who exclaims how adaptable they are but rant on and on, you probably are not as change-friendly as you think and it shows with your exasperated statements.

There are always exceptions to the rule but by and large what Pundit has said seems to be the overall trend in working with large groups of both experienced and new MTs.

I think offshoring has nothing to do with this. It is a separate issue altogether and will happen regardless.

I do think he/she has given excellent advice for those who want to hang onto this profession as long as possible.

It is much easier to go to the eager new MT minds and give instruction or feedback than to go through the arguments and backlash usually resulting from the same situation involving an experienced MT.

Glad I'm out of it!

"Just had to give my 10 cents worth"

Here's a dollar.

I'm paying you in advance for the next nine accurate statements you make.

12 cents. I'd love to make 12 cents. sm
a line as an employee.  17 years acute care experiencing doing all work types and I only make 9 cpl plus incentives.
well it added up for me,
characters divided by 65 -- they DO count spaces.

plus i just rec'd the unexpected check for 'errors' of over $400, yeehah!! and another letter explaining the new 'pay plan' which includes another week off for FT'ers, pay based upon experience, etc. MQ, like i've said before, is always improving, i love this company!! i just hope they continue to be who they are and not ever sell out!!
Added.
Thanks for your Feedback.

MTStars Support Team.

Should have added.
new platform, even after 3 months typing about 300 lines less per day.  Plus they might be doing away with incentive pay, so seeing what is "out there."  The insurance coverage also got so much worse with 3,000.00 deductible, no meds covered, etc., which is a huge benefit loss.  Will probably stay there, but seeing what other companies offer for a good overall pay/benefit package.
Oh I also added more RAM
I also added more RAM and it made not one whit of difference
added...
ADDED: She knows she's likely to lose some accounts due to poor quality but figures she'll worry about that later. I think it's a horrendous way to run a business, but nevertheless, it's exactly the way it's being done.
Also, I should have added that if your
facility goes by BOS, a copy of that is also an excellent idea. BOS2 is what is most commonly used, however there is a BOS3 out now. I would not purchase these, however, until I had a job and was told that I needed them as they can be quite expensive and not everyone has flipped over to BOS3. There are many things in these books on style, how to type certain things in reports (not always logical), etc.
Have you added in the other benefits

The company has great benefits that can add up to several thousand a year. Paid downtime. Paid holidays. Vacation/PTO starting the first year. No equipment rental fee. Big discount on word books. Rental library for medical education. Reimbursement for continuing education. Decent insurance. Might make a difference.

:P
The added pay for the CMT some companies SM
pay, like mine, is on top of basic pay, so you'd even make more than yourself if you had the credential.
One more thing that can be added - (sm)
You said: 'I was informed by 48 out of 54 potential employers that the CMT Credential that I thought I earned was false, counterfeit, and not worth the paper it was printed on.'

To all thinking of obtaining AHDI's CMT test (supposedly the 'legit' certification):

THE AHDI CERTIFICATION ISN'T WORTH THE PAPER IT'S WRITTEN ON, EITHER.

How do you spell S-C-A-M ?
TL is a do nothing, worthless added layer of
management to make some people think they are more important than they really are.  Most of them know jack-sh** about anything, are just company pets and get paid to be a PITA.
I have explained several times now that we have added the
Indian URL to the Google Adsense filter so that it will stop appearing, but it does take a few days for it to take effect.  We have NO control over Google when a banner appears, but we can remove it though it does take time on Google's part.
Cool! Thanks. I added it to my favorites!

That is because tobacco co. added 10% more nicotine
I quit for fives years beginning in 1989. It was difficult but five years is a long time. Then, married a smoker...well, tried to quit again numerous times, going for 1-1/2 years without only to start again in 2002 and then 10 months without and starting again this past June.

I want to quit, the price is outrageous. The cough is so unappealing. And my mother just died of respiratory failure.

sry that should be c'mon, my shorthand was on and added the th. nm

He added over 200 to the counter right from the start.

It's a trick.

Hi, Lisa. Have you added macros to SM
your Expander yet for many of the common VR changes--such as for backspacing over a comma, adding a period, and capping the first word of the new sentence? How do you drop common words like, say, "she" into a sentence on the run? I hit "k" and in it goes, but I'm off scanning the next line by then and don't actually see it. Do you constantly use your program's function for jumping the cursor to the point of dictation and vice versa (assuming it has one)? This is a big speeder-upper.

And a reality that's hard for some to run into: Editing skills and talents are different than transcribing skills and talents. Reading fast and accurate becomes big. Punctuating fast on the run was always desirable, but it's more significant now as the ability to simply get the letters on paper becomes less so. Are you one of those this work suits or one it doesn't? If yes, keep working on speed. If not, move on sooner rather than later.
Glad you added that (:) to clarify. (nm)

Hey! I signed the above MQ QA
NOT not a cruise fan!!  What is up with that???
I just signed up with the gym. You get one
free visit with the PT and then they try and get you to pay $50 a month extra to sign up with a PT. Hahahahahahah! Not happening. My little toe feels great but the rest of my body is screaming at me. Trying to work but that's not going well today.

Best Friends. I wonder if anyone who has offered to foster pets from Katrina have been contacted yet. I haven't heard anything from them about being a foster parent. I live near Atlanta and I heard that several pets were sent to Atlanta's Humane Society, but haven't heard of anyone having a pet placed with them.

Maybe I'll try the LA SPCA posted here. Post if you or someone you know has had a pet from LA placed with them.

I thought I should say that I don't think there's anything funny going on, I just wonder what they're doing with all those pets.

Thanks!
I signed it but....

.....I don't like their tactics. When you click on "sign petition", it takes you to the donate page. Of course, you don't have to donate, but at first I, too, like some of the people further down in the threat, thought there was no other option besides donating. But then when I clicked on the "Signatures" tab, I saw my name was there.

There are a lot of gullible and unwary people out there - and the way they have that website set up, it is designed to prey on them. I signed this petition because I feel it is important, but I will not be signing any other petitions on that site.

Has anyone signed up for 6.99
a month with TranscriptionNet?  Is it worth it, any good jobs to be found? Thanks
8 cents versus 9 cents
Wait a minute....9/55 is to 8/65....would not 9/55 be significantly higher pay than 8/64 (spaces are not counted in either case)?
8 cents a line. Should be 10 cents for over 10 yrs exp but

The India ad is a Google ad and has been added not to show, however

it does not not remove instantly. It usually takes hours to a day for these types of ads to no longer appear.  We have no control over what ads pop up, but we can set them up to no longer appear once we see them and can block the URL.

Thank you.

Should have added below that my Infinity USB pedal works with it as well.

It would be a lot of added risk to an already risky surgery. nm

oops..i added my feathered friends.

I guess I should have added, now I use EXText with ESP and I love it. I just wonder if I could
even make it better.  I have ShortHand too, but I stopped using that when I started this job because they have ESP.
Hmm, I have a paper here that I signed that says
they will deduct FICA taxes, pay the employer part of FICA equaling 7.65%, and federal income taxes. It says I will receive a W-2, not a 1099.

FICA is the SS tax. So, if they are holding out federal taxes, FICA, employer part of FICA, then all that is left is state tax...??

it seems to be all offices, have you signed
up for IPAY? I have not gotten a check yet either, but there is a statement there for 09/02 which obviously is not a regular paycheck
Unless you signed something when you were hired

that says you agree to pay for return shipping when you leave, then the company is responsible.  If you don't have your original hire paperwork, ask them for a return shipping label.  If they say you agreed to pay for it, ask them to send you a copy of the signed agreement.  Make sure you save all correspondence.

You never signed a noncompete, right?
Besides that, I have it from two attorneys and the State Department of Labor that noncompete agreements aren't legal in many states.  TAKE the ACCOUNT and RUN!!!!  This woman has said that you can have them, she doesn't want them.  They do want you.  You don't owe her any loyalty, especially if she's running her business into the ground.  YOU need to look out for YOURSELF.  That's what I'm doing today is making a list of every potential transcription client in my city and soliciting them by phone with follow-up letter.
Gee...isn't that the profession YOU signed up for as well?
Constantly correcting mistakes?
I signed and sent the link to everyone I know
