I think I misstated it - the at home people live within an hour of the hospital - sm

In Reply to: If this is close by to me (VA) I would love to apply - sm - Laura E.

this is what the hospital is absolutely positively trying to avoid - having people all over the country doing the job. If the equipment breaks, if there are meetings, etc. - these cannot be done with transcriptionists all of the country.

I have 13 years experience and just started a hospital job working from home making $16 an hour

and with a really good incentive plan.  I live in the Kansas City area.  $10 seems like a low starting point even with only two years experience which is the usual benchmark for hospital MT jobs.

It's been my experience that the low end of the pay scale for hospital employed MTs was around $12 an hour.  Also, it's been my experience that the pay offered is usually based on years of experience and how well you perform on the transcription test.

I would say if their pay is that low, they should at least be making it up with incentive and it doesn't sound like they are.

great post - we have people that work at home in our hospital - sm
but getting them to work is like asking them to do a big favor. They constantly have the excuse "oh my kids are here, I have to play with them." "I can't work because my kids have a cold." "I can't work because my kids want to go outside and play."

I could go on and on and on. Those of us that work inhouse and have kids don't seem to have "the problems"
if you live among trashy people, low income people, people w/o goals or direction,
content to just get by, you by default become a part of a group. "people" have decided to group trailer people as trash. that is because there are enough people in that group to earn the title and even if you aren't trash, you are categorized by others. did i think i was trash in lower class neighborhood surrounded by people who drank and fought all weekend? no but i knew i wasn't staying and did not try to pretend that all the fools in the neighborhood were just nice folks who ended up where they were because high horse snobs deemed their neighborhood low class. people for the most part live exactly where they belong because they don't want to educate themselves, they don't mind "trash" around them and they don't want to be bothered trying just a bit hard to extract themselves from that world. they justify everything to themselves i guess saying everyone who doesn't like their lifestyle is a snob and the comedians (Jeff Foxworthy/Chris Rock, etc) who make fun of them are just ill-informed.

As for me, I fought hard to get out and don't even want to look back. It amazes me people stay for generations.
why yes the quality of air where i live is quite different than where the city people live.
Lots of pollution.  That's why everyone is moving away from the city and areas zoned for multiple housing units and low income housing and trailer parks.  Population is dense and near manufacturing.  So yes, the air is different but millions of people pay a little extra for the quality, the space and privacy afforded to those who move out of polluted crowded areas such as you defend.  There is always a reason why some areas and housing is cheaper than others.  Maybe it is the air and maybe it's something you can't quite put your finger on but you know you would prefer not to live in certain areas.  You know what I mean or are you living in one of those areas?  They tell after awhile you block out the sounds, the smells and get used to the pollution.  I don't know.  I didn't stay long enough to test the theory.  My mental and physical health is way too important to me.
Not every one can live off $11.50 an hour
I am not one here that complains about my wage as I do very well with MT, but I would be looking for a new job if I was only making $11.50 an hour. Consider yourself lucky that you have what you have making that wage. There is no way I could do it. We pay over $1100 a month for a 600 sq. ft. 1-bedroom condo for 3 of us. We pay another $250 a month for electricity. Once you factor in the higher cost of food and gas that we have to pay because everything has to be shipped 3,000 miles, there is no way I could live off $11.50. We only have 1 car and rarely go out to eat or spend money on extravagances. I recently had to buy clothes because I was still wearing my maternity clothes from 2 years ago that had too many holes in them. So we are not splurging. The only people in my area of the country that live off $11.50 an hour are working 2-3 jobs to survive. So just because you can live in your area of the country on what you make, don't judge others say we need to reevaluate our lifestyles. I don't think it is a bad thing to just want to get paid a decent wage for our job. For what its worth, Wal-Mart here pays their door greets more than you are making as an MT. Does that seem right?
No way, in New York or CA you can't live on $11.50 an hour.
I understand your message and get what you are saying; however, it is literally impossible to live on $11.50 an hour in those two states, and probably a few others. You can't even get a 1 bedroom studio apartment for less than $1500 a month, not including utilities, then food, clothing, and other bills. Sorry, can't do it.

hospital at-home -vs- national at home

I have an interview today with a hospital...work in-house for 3 months, then go home, paid on production. I don't know as of yet what they pay production, so my question is to anyone who works for a hospital at home AND has also worked for a national at home...

Which would be the best to choose? The hospital offers great benefits, but the national I work for now also has benefits, not as good as the hospital, though.  Any input would be most appreciated!

$10 an hour?? at a hospital ...
doing transcription ????
$45 plus tip. Takes about 1/2 hour. Live in Central FL. nm

$18 an hour but I work inhouse in a hospital.
nm
You must live in a metro area because rural areas pay even less per hour.

Of course you can buy a big house for 130,000 in a smaller town and the same amount won't buy you a pot to pee in, in a place like San Diego or the D.C. area.  It's all relative.

Philadelphia - $25 per hour at a large teaching hospital. nm

Hospital MTs around my neck of the woods make $24 per hour +. sm
The jobs are out there, you have to find them.
Dad was in the hospital an hour away from NYC having a stent put in. Heard the news on the way

Everything else was within normal range, so I figured she misstated.

Do you want to live in the home?
If you want to stay there, you would probably be eligible for what the govt is offering, as stated. You need to make some phone calls. BK 13 is also an option if you want to save your home, can modify loan and make those payments. My neighbor lived in her house for over a year before they forclosed. Everyone worked with her, agent, bank so she and her young child could relocate (her husband had just been arrested for a white collar crime and left her on her own).

Don't feel alone, people like you are everywhere

Consider calling in to the Dave Ramsey Show or Suze Orman. You have some options.

Everything is dated and to the hour: As in: 1/30/2009 at 12:01 AM, the property at ___ will be auctioned. BK 13 would put a stay in place, and freeze any action which would buy you time. But future income will determine everything.

I am sorry this is happening and I know the stress as I have been there before once myself and hope it never happens again but you know, it's possible.

Late charges and finance charges and interest and penalties are what beat down people in this boat. It makes no sense to punish people who don't have enough cash as it is at this time in history.
"I would rather be from a broken home than live in one"
Please get out of the situation you are in.  You are not doing yourself or your children any favors by staying with this man who has great potential for violence.  The best thing you can give your children is a healthy, happy mother.  You do not deserve to live under threats all your life.  Make plans and get out - you and your children will be grateful!
Not OP, but how does one go about getting an at-home hospital job..sm
I have 30 years MT acute care experience and think I would like working at home for a hospital (currently work for a mid size MTSO). I don't recall seeing those type jobs advertised. Can anyone give me advice on where to find those kind of jobs? Thanks for any help!
I don't know where you people live
but in my neck of the woods if you are only making $20,000 a year, you are well below proverty level, with all the people who have quit from my old office, that is a drop in the bucket from what they gained from those salaries alone!!!
Hospital at-home job vs. service
Here is the scoop:  I work for a service now, but was offered an at-home position with a local hospital at $14.70 per hour with benes.  WHAT SHOULD I DO???????
hospital work at home
May I ask if it was easy for you to get the at-home job working for the hospital? I have a hospital very near my home and have been contemplating going there to see if they have at-home transcription jobs available, but haven't done so just yet. I would love to be paid hourly. I'm so tired of having to type my fingers to the bone to make good money. Hourly should would be nice, even if only temporarily. Thanks for any advice.
I work for a hospital but am home. nm

Home versus Hospital - sm
Speaking as one who was a unit secretary for many, many years, and now an MT working from home, I personally would NEVER, ever go back...but, the benefits of working in-house are much better than most MT companies offer. AND, your point of steady paycheck is a valid one. This is something you would have to sit down and write all the pros and cons, with your feelings included, to make a decision based on what is best for you. Good luck.
When I worked at home for a hospital
I had all of the benefits, but the hospital I worked at did not go by production.  They just basically paid per hour.  They did not expect a certain amount of work be done in a certain amount of time.  I had access to the software the hospital used.  This probably won't help you, but it has only been 2 years since I left the hospital.  I make way more with my own accounts.  If the benefits you are seeking have to do with retirement, then you may be better off setting up your own retirement account because if you are older, you will need to be vested before you even begin to think about a pension.
MT working at home for hospital
I just recently was sent home from a local hospital where I work. I make $15.80/hour, no incentive, and we are required to type a minimum of 1200 lines per 8-hour shift.
I work at home for a hospital
differential, average around $18 to $22 an hour. I am not paid hourly, but totally CPL. I don't use any benefits because I am on my husband's.
Missouri hospital at-home MT..........
I have worked for a hospital for 15 years. They moved us home about 10 years ago. I make 11 cpl on a 60-character line. We have to maintain a 5000 line per two week pay period quota for health insurance which is free for employees, but I carry family plan and it is 110.00 a month (hard to beat that). We can type whenever we want, no set hours. We also rotate weekly on call schedules where we go on call from Midnight Sunday morning to the next Saturday at Midnight. Just for being on call, we get an extra 220.00 that week regardless if we receive any calls, but if we do get called, we still receive our 11 cpl pay as usual. This is a 270 bed hospital with all fields and specialties and pretty well all of the dictators are great. I am very happy with my position at this hospital.
I am, but I work for a hospital (at home). (nm)

If he has a sudden bronchospasm at home, he may not LIVE during the trip to the ER. He needs to go.

I also live in Georgia - how did they find out you work from home?

PLEASE! Let's suppose a supervisor works an 8 hour day on and off. At home.
What does this supervisor do? So I have a supervisor now see. Every now and again I will get an e-mail that tells me account is behind or caught up. Not on a daily basis and sometimes not even on a weekly basis. Now besides looking into the computer to see account is behind or up to date, what does this supervisor do in the course of an on and off 8 hour day?

I am assuming this "supervisor" is not doing QA or anything, just supervising an account. So any questions regarding QA are sent off to QA personnel. So what questions can a supervisor have that would tie up their day? EIGHT HOURS of a working day doing what?
I think that other people who live in the same neighborhood
also bought their homes and paid good money for them. They have the right to look out their window that they OWN and not be forced to look across the street at Bozo's Big Top.
Some people live like this for years.....

The last time I got out of the hospital I couldn't work for almost two months, and that really set me back.  I'm single so have only one income, and a house payment with a second mortgage.  You can do a lot of things with beans, rice, potatoes.  There are loads of dollar stores and outlet stores almost everywhere...... Big Lots, Grocery Outlet, Wonder Outlet, day-old section in the grocery store... even meat from the day before if you get there early enough.  Sometimes right before bakeries close you can get bags or boxes or donuts and bread for almost nothing.  As for the ice cream, can't help you on that one.  Things are tough everywhere it seems.

And why do we think that we deserve to live better than other people?

This country is plagued with consumerism and lots of people don't seem to know when enough is enough. We have garages for our cars and other stuff when people in other parts of the world don't even have anything close to our garages to live in. No where have I read that only Americans are entitled to all these luxuries that we seem to think we can't live without. (Having food, clothing, shelter and clean drinking water is considered a luxury in many parts of the world, so please don't use that as a bully pulpit.)

I, too, am tired of this argument!

yep, she had to hire 3 people to do my 8 hour job - sm
AND TWO DOCTORS RETIRED AND TWO MIDWIVES LEFT!!! And the best part - I absolutely positively loved that job with all my heart, and didn't care that I was making $13/hour because my rent was so ridiculously low. But when she made that comment, I walked out, and she opened up a whole new door for me - I now make $68,000/year and granted I do work 45-50 hours a week sometimes, I wouldn't change it for the world.

So I will let her go and feed the monkeys at the zoo.
Former MQ here. I finally got a home-based hospital job.
Less flexibility, as in having to work set shifts, but the pay is great and I have all the great benefits.  I know there are so few hospitals that have their own department, but if you're in a populated area and can find a job, it will TOTALLY renew your opinion of this job. It has for me.

need advice /home-based hospital job

I was offered a home-based MT job as a direct employee of the hospital with an extremely good per-line-rate.   But yes, apparently it was too good to be true!  Apparently on further consideration, the administrator now says it is too costly (technically) for home set-up; mentioned something about the Lanier DVI desktop and how costly etc. etc.  and some other MT has the license (?what's that about?); also mentioned "Cquence" transcription software program.   They presently already have 5 other off-site MTs.   Anybody out there with opinions and/or constructive advice...please.     Thanks in advance.

I worked for a hospital at home for 4 years. sm
We had to work set hours. My advice is allow youself 1/2 hour for lunch, and at least two 15-minute break periods. Work 2 hours, take a break, work 2 hours, take a lunch break, etc. Otherwise, you may find yourself having back, shoulder and hand problems. Working 9 hours may seem like a drag, but not being able to work at all is even worse. Remember, if you were working on site, you would not only have to work 8-1/2 hours, but would have travel time on top of it. Just my experience.
I worked at home for the local hospital here.
It was fine. They paid hourly and provided equipment. We had plenty of work and had to stick to a set schedule. They do use a service or two for overflow, but it is strictly overflow. The hospital still has employees working at home. They don't ALL outsource. (And ironically, some hospitals are taking back their transcription and hiring in-house and at-home MTs!)
I work for a hospital from home on my computer and they do this too. sm
I was told that it is becoming more and more common to see this happen as the internet can open the hospital to too many vulnerabilities. It's my computer but I am on their clock, so I am OK with it. I prefer my books to internet research though so it is not so bad for me.

Good luck with this.
I do radiology now, paid by the hour, work from home, can it get any easier than that?

You can't judge people by what coast they live on....
I am originally from the East Coast and I am NOT a "nasty woman". The writer was cold hearted yes....but it doesn't give you the right to blame the East Coast. You could live anywhere...it depends how you were raised in the long run. I was taught to always treat others as I would expect to be treated...imagine that from an East Coast momma! Have a good day.
are there any websites that have live chat for MTs? that actually have people in them?
???
IT people aren't paid well where I live, and I'm not
willing to move to where the money is. The job market is saturated here with qualified IT people, so we fight tooth and nail for a $12/hr job requiring a college degree. I wouldn't say I'm unusually productive at MT. I use ShortHand as an Expander and stick to smaller MTSOs with decent accounts.
I am taking it that you live in my area..and people just don't get it here..
I know this is going to probably upset a lot of people on here, but at this point I have to take up for doxie. I believe she must live in the same area as me, and it is very, very rural..a place where you can barely make enough to survive.

Doxie, I have been an IC for many, many years and love working this way. If you would like to talk about it, please feel free to get in touch with me. I understand what it is like to have to live here and make a decent wage...and I can even tell you how to go about being an IC..which is what your original question was. :)
I think people don't understand what an audio hour is.
It's typing a one-hour long tape for $20. If it takes 3-4 hours, that's only actually $5-6.67 per hour. Hmm, I wonder why Guru didn't send that one to me! LOL
Hospital job is "work-at-home" paid hourly
Thank you for well wishes.

from working in a state that has low tolerance for drinking.
