Go to tools, then options. Go to the "View" tab. Put a check mark in "Windows In Taskbar." Click OK. This should show all documents that are opened in the taskbar now.
For the taskbar being on the side, just point your arrow to any blank gray space on the taskbar and left click and drag it to the bottom of the screen.
