Part of me wants to play an HR advisor and give them a mini-course!

Not going to happen, however, because that is their sole responsibility - to present their best foot forward.

I handle resumes/apps at my company and I would assume
If you note to me in your mail or on your resume next to the company name to not contact, I would have no problem whatsoever with that.

How to companies handle?
I understand that completely, (this is not the case, but something I just thought about), BUT let's say that a relative or your friend decided to bring about a malpractice case.....how would it look that you typed your own note, your family's note or your friend's note.  I know when I worked for a hospital, we were not allowed to do that and I am just trying to set a standard for my independent contractors.  I was just wondering how other companies handle it.
And large companies love getting ahold of those
nm
I've been with so many companies, large and small, I can't count anymore. nm

I don't understand these companies....

I am a newbie, have been doing this for a few months.  I work for this company, Sten-Tel.  They only send out QA'd reports every once in a while.  Their QA sucks.  One QA will say this and another will say that and all the time, it looks like you are the one making all the mistakes.  The QA supervisor does nothing but send you the corrected reports in an email and if you email her about something you are questioning, she does nothing about it.  I get an email from her today and all it states is "We need to have you out of editing by July 18.  Please review account specifics and thoroughly check your work before sending to QA."  What does that mean?  I do thoroughly check my work!  I sent her an email asking her to clarify what she is saying.  I mean, am I doing a sucky job or what?  I am confused.  I thought I was doing good.  How am I supposed to know when I don't hear anything from anybody?  Now I feel depressed.  I guess I am going to get fired.  I am not good at anything it seems like.  Are there any good companies to work for?

What I don't understand is why the companies don't send
the ESL dictators overseas.  You'd think an Indian Transcriptionist would be able to understand English in her own accent better than we would.
Do you understand companies can't be in the position
of judging whether your felony was really bad or not so bad? They have to leave that to the courts and make rules that people with felonies probably shouldn't work in the medical field where there's a slew of personal information available and individuals have a greater than average potential to physically harm another human being.

This is the nature of the medical field. They're not trying to be nasty or exclusive. They simply realize the gravity of the work in this field. When I was in nursing school, we had extensive checks done on us. This was long before even taking any licensure exams. We were told if we had anything shady in the past, perhaps not even a felony, we may be turned down by the state board.

And MTs aren't a scarcity. If a company has a choice between a felon or a non-felon, can you understand why they'd choose someone who may be less risk to them? If they did hire a felon who later sold patient information, imagine how they'd be raked over the coals for not having excluded that applicant.

I'm not saying you're any more of a risk than anybody else, only that I can understand their stance and I don't think it's a desire to snub felons. Personally, I think EACH of us has the potential to be a felon in the right circumstances. It's unfortunately one of those life choices that doesn't get erased even if we've learned our lesson.

Where there's a will, there's a way. You'll find your place, but expect you may have to try much harder than other MTs. Also know that most beginning MTs have trouble getting their foot in the door, so it's rarely easy for anybody to get started in MT, let alone with a decent employer.
Well they used to underbid from what I understand other companies to get clients and then as we know
they SUPPOSEDLY padded the bills. That is what the lawsuit is about. Now they have to be fair to the clients and therefore there is no bill padding and they have already underbid other MT companies so they are making bare minimum on their clients. Whose pocket do you think this will come out of. This is why I think the best is over. Plus I do believe they are losing clients and I know the good MTs are leaving. Hard to tell what will happen with this new pay plan when it comes out. It wont be in our favor for the reason listed above. This whole thing has also been discussed on another website as well. Pretty common knowledge this is what is happening. Now they also have to reduce lines rates to hospitals supposedly for ASR as well and I know my main hospital account asked to have their line rates reduced or they were leaving MQ so on it goes. A lot of this info comes from emplyees in the office that have quit and then they seem to want to discuss all this stuff that they hid from us before. You know the game.
Yes, it happens to me too. I think they are getting a lot of apps. nm

Job apps
I have sent in some resumes to a few companies on the Job Seeker's board. I have over 15 years experience.

I haven't heard back from any of them. Just wondering if this happens to anyone else???
You certainly can purchase Word alone. I do instead of upgrading all of the other apps. Do a googl

Resumes
I have been advertising for an MT, but some of the resumes received are appalling. There will be misspelled words, incorrect word usage, etc.  I advertised for a few years experience and although these resumes show that they have the number of years required, there are still these types of errors.    Now, of course, for me I will not hire anyone with multiple errors in their resume. But, here is my question I guess, I will thank everyone for sending a resume once I have filled the position, but on some of these (and I cannot do all of them of course) that just need a few touchups, would you take the extra minute to let them know what they could do to improve their resume?  Not downgrading them by any means, but just let them know maybe what knocked them out of getting the position you had available or maybe just letting them know about the errors.  I would love opinions on this please but really more for can I help them or will it just tick them off?
I don't know about the resumes, but --sm
on this board, they keep a pretty good eye on things. and now since it has been questioned by someone, the administrator may just come out and tell us if it is a US computer address or not.

I just wish they would monitor the MQ board better, as the people on that one are really calling each other s*t*u*p*i*d and the like, and getting away with it. I have never seen such rude people as on that board! my goodness.

If you have ever pasted it on the actual site, it will automatically fill stuff in for you.  I have mine on a certain other job website, and when I click on a job to submit my resume it fills in everything for me.
Polish up those resumes
I've been job hunting for a long time time searching for the right job. This week I got three job offers, plus my phone and emails are going on overload. Let the hiring begin.

Now's the time fellow MTs, everyone seems to be hiring!!
MTSOs AND RESUMES
As a recruiter, it is nice to have the references already listed in the resume.
I don't think everything is caught - like the job resumes
with addresses like Mumbai, Hawaii.  Could it be a name, not a place?
14 cpl? are you still taking resumes?

Resumes "use caution" sm
i provided a little too much information in my resume to a company I did not know. That company had the "brass ones" to go after some of the accounts I used to service. I think one has to be very explicit as to what they have to offer, i.e., education, backgound (not too specific yet), willingness to test (that should tell them something)and not too much upfront or personal. I have a wonderful background and while testing online, I was thrown some curves by a company, such as showing me an anatomy chart with arrows pointing. What did they want? They were not clear, I could have answered in muscles, bones, tendons, areas of the body, etc., just blank black and white charts with arrows pointing at random is kind of irrelevant. Then before they let me finish the test, I received a message that I had "failed the test." These brainless idiots missed out and I really would not want any part of them anyway. I have received replies that I would "here" from others with the worst English language on the face of the earth in those replies. This testing stuff is for the birds. Either you know it or you don't -- you're not going to fake it to make it just to land a job with a company who tell you nothing about themselves but want to know everything about you. Beware of the wolves at your door! I've given my life to this field and now I want to work from home for someone like myself who gave their heart and soul to the business, and I will be willing to share my experience for the comfort of working from home. I will not work for some money-making jerks who don't care about the patients, just the almighty $$$. Too bad they only care about how they can "soak" their clients and kick good people to the curb.Too many inmantes are running the asylum. Be careful!
Question for MTSOs about resumes

Just curious... what is the preference of an MTSO when it comes to references..... would you prefer to have them listed in the resume or is it acceptable to have "Available upon request" on a resume.

Thank you

AOL problems please resend resumes..sm

To anyone that applied for the radiology IC position posted a few days ago, if you sent a resume, or email, I did not get it. I have since found out that there is a problem with AOL for some reason on this site and no replies are coming through.  I have since reposted the ad with a different email server.

If you are still looking for IC radiology position, plenty of work guaranteed, do not over hire, please read the ad I reposted on the job board and send a resume.

I reply to all emails if you meet the requirements.

Resumes and filling out applications
Hi all, I'd like to know if any of you have run into the same problem as I have when filling out applications and what you did about it. I have, from time to time, left MT work and applied for other jobs outside the home. Over the last few years, I have worked for a few MT services for a short time. I don't even remember the dates that I started working for each one and stopped. Some were so short (a few months) because it didn't work out for some reason (job wasn't as described or some other reason). How do you handle something like that on an application? You don't want to appear as though you job hop, but you know as well as I do how some services are and you CAN'T stay any longer working for them. I'm at a loss now, how to handle this on a job application.

Thanks for any help or advice.

Thanks. I have already sent out like 11 resumes and tested with three of the places. I have only he
the woman told me she had just hired and to check back in 6 months.  I have also e-mailed five other companies to see if they were hiring.  I assume since I have heard nothing back from them they are not.  Thankfully the one I heard from was not a defnite no but I can't wait 6 months for a job either.  With times as they are I could use some extra income right now.  I guess I will keep looking and hope someone calls me soon.
Next thing they will be using HSD on resumes and credits ---
high school dropout.

AA is absolutely a nothing degree. It means you took a year or 2 of education beyond getting your GED or graduating from high school.
Start sending resumes now

I'd start sending resumes now.  The way things seem to be going, it will take several months to get anything anyway, so don't delay.  Really try to pump up the good aspects of how you work - good accuracy, building speed, reliability to schedule, etc.  That may help when employers see that you've only been at it for 9 months.  You will find someone who will take a chance on you.

As to your other questions, there are so many variables, there's no one situation that works for most people.  A lot of people like being employees, but a lot of us like being IC.  Some people hate large corporations and others love them and would never think of working for a small company.

I know for my situation, it took a couple of tries until I found a situation that I think works for me.

If I were in your situation (and I have been) I'd send out resumes to every company that is advertising and even some that are not.  If a company is advertising and they want someone with 2 years or less, send them a resume or take their online test.  The worst that can happen is they say no, but you just might hit someone on a good day where they think you're worth talking to.

Good luck.

What a recruiter told me they look for on resumes
I was told when a job is posted, they literally get 100 resumes/applications.  When they go through them - they want to see exactly what kind of experience you have.  Not just specialties, neurology for example - but what type of reports, EMGs, EEGs, MRIs, CTs, etc.  What type of op notes?  This should be a little verbose.  Next they want to know what services you have worked for, paid by production, platforms used, and yes even the equipment that you currently have in your possession and ready to use.  This cuts down on the questions they have to ask you.  If you have already answered most of their questions on your resume, you probably go in the contact pile.  If your current and past MT employment is sketchy and verification information/dates is not offered, you probably go in the trash pile if they have enough qualified people to contact.  You can't just say I have been an MT for 10-20 years, a lot of people have.  Think of yourself as the recruiter and the information you would want to know.
Can someone tell me where you post your resumes on here. I dont see a place for them.
:
How would the info from our resumes be used for identity theft?
I guess I don't understand it. My social is not on my resume. Only my name and phone number and previous employers. How would one use this info to gain enough info to use my identity? I am just curious.
I would just start sending out resumes and posting
your resume on the various job boards.  I never had any MT training, but I have also been doing this for 20 years.  You might not get a job in acute care, but your experience should get you in the door.
May I ask if the experienced people have been getting any replies to their resumes posted on here
within the past few weeks. Just curious as to what type of responses you have hda. Thanks much.
There's a link to post resumes on the Job Seeker's board. nm

Moderator, how do I view my resume I place on your job site. I dont see any new resumes posted when

I look on there and I did mine yesterday. Where can I see it. I did not come up with the list of resumes that seems to end in August.

How do you handle
Your first year as an IC regarding taxes? Should I go ahead and set up some type of payment plan like that?
What? That's what you can't do - handle someone else having a
Take your own advice, please.

here's how i handle it N/A
when enrolling my son in high school they wanted all sorts of information like that about family history...i left all blank with N/A....

They also wanted his social security number....N/A There is no reason in the world they should need his social security number and I asked about this.. They said it was for when he signed up for college loans etc. I told them he's not in college yet and I would not be furnishing that information to anyone.

In a post below someone said something about ppl being over paranoid these days....I had my identity stolen a few years back. It nearly destroyed my credit, wiped out my bank accounts, and took me literally years to clean up. In this day and age you can never be too careful with privacy. You just cannot be sure what anyone is doing with your private information. Better safe than sorry.

How do you handle if you are an IC??

You need to know how to handle these people. sm

They will try to get you to work like a dog, your fingers to the bone.  You just tell him no.  I will work x number of hours a day and that is it.  That is what I did and it worked out fine.   They will try to push you to work 24 x 7 if they can.  That is the way they are (men from India).  Just hold firm and they will accept it.   You need to be "thick-skinned" I think to be able to work with them.

My DBF can't even handle the 2 hours
that he watches them every evening. They drive him nuts. He doesn't help with the cleaning, cooking, laundry, and like I said-those 2 hours from 8pm to 10pm, I don't really get much done cause they are in the next room screaming-him included. It's not fun. He does his best with them....when he takes them places in the evening, but of course, this can't happen every night. (I'm ready to bail in the relationship anyway) Just be so thankful to those of you who have "adult" spouses, he's like a big kid, leaves clothes all over, etc, doesn't know where the garbage can is. He is still in the dark ages I'm afraid when it comes to "women in the house, barefoot and pregnant" attitude. He's only 39. Blames it on the way he was raised. K. It's 2005, get with the program. It's a lost cause.
easy to handle

Merely sent an email. In the subject line put MTSTARS (company name) so when you get a response you have the details.

Merely say, I have a couple of question prior to sending in a resume or testing taking.  This saves time on both sides.

May I ask, what is the lowest to the highest rate of pay. What pay rate formula is used, for example, by the line, by the minute, by the word, by the gross word.  Are spaces paid, ALL spaces.

some in their ads say "we pay for ALL spaces"  so I guess some companies pay a percentage.

For instance Medquist does not pay for the demographic screen, the CC notation or the headings. and prob more that is not known. .

You need to know how to convert this to an hourly rate so you know how much you actually are making.

Below is a quote from a company in Texas TSI and I sat down with the calculator and figured some of the hourly rates.  For the most part, way too many lines for most MTs

Below is the quote in email from TSI.  The calculated figures are mine.

.____________________________________________________

Less than 1000 lines per day average = 6 cents (these we consider to be part-time positions and we really prefer to work with full-time employees.)

1000-1100 average lines per day = 7 cents

(this is $70 for 8 hours ($8.75 hr)

1200-1399 average lines per day = 7.5 cents

This is $90. for 8 hours $11.25 hr and 150 lines an hour about almost 4.5 pages/hr.  This is a lot of pages/hr.

1400-1599 average lines per day = 8 cents

This is 1400 X 8 = $112 per 8 hr.

8 divide into  $112=$14/hr

1400 lines divide 8= 175 lines/hr

Figure 34 lines/page+ 5.41 pages an hour.

No way I could do this. I would not work for 6,7,8,9- no less than 10 and this is not really great.  You cannot predict what you will end up with. You could be on target and lose it all, wham. .

1600-1799 average lines per day = 8.5 cents

1800 or greater average lines per day = 9 cents  So then this would be:

225 lines per hour, about 6.61 pages

112 lines 30 minutes, 3 1/2 pages

56.2 lines 15 minutes 1.65 pages

greater than 14,625 Keystrokes per hour

nearly 4 lines per minute

Well over one million keystrokes/8hr

 .

Here's how I'd handle the situation...

First off I'd tell my mom that he's a pig and what he has done.

Secondly I'd never be around him without a recording device turned on in my pocket so that way you can record his comments, and if he touches you or flirts then get a recording of your asking him to not touch or look at you that way and his response.  Then play the recording for your mom and other relatives.

While it may be true your mother may go into denial you need to stand up for yourself.   My mom was a fool and protected my father when she was told about his untoward advances towards women for years.... and then something happened that made her realize that she had been a fool for years and that he was the one with the problem.

Here is an even nicer way to handle it!
I totally agree with having her over in YOUR space and being nice to her. Tell her you can hear everything through the walls and celings (blaming them was a good idea) Tell her other things BESIDES her that you can hear. Tell her what you do for a living and what times you work, and how those "other" noises are so distracting. You don't have to tell her she is too loud; she will surely get the picture if she has any sense at all. If that doesn't fix the problem, then I would go to the manager and ask if there have ever been other complaints about her first. He/She may already know this is a problem. You never know how people will react if you tell them you would appreciate it if they would be quiet, no matter how nice you say it. I would have her over for snacks and a "chat" real soon though or you will go insane!
And another one who can't handle reality.

The reference I handle THE MOST - sm

How do you handle no work?

I have not had work for most of July.  I am an IC and have been doing this for years.  This is the slowest I have ever been and I'm stressed out.  Luckily, hubby pays the majority of the bills so I am not starving!  I have applied several other places with no luck.  Is this just a summer slow period or what?  How can I keep from going a bit crazy?  I am getting rather depressed.  TIA

How would you handle this situation?

I picked up some extra IC work back in May, and since that time have covered for the owner by editing for her while she was on vacation for a week, and then taken extra work as the MT with whom I share dictation from this doc was on vacation for a week, then sick for a week just after return, the next Friday had a family emergency, etc.  This was supposed to be part-time work, and has turned out to be more than I would expect for part-time . . . to the point where when this doc was going on vacation, I was trying to hold out and not say anything about it being too much, thinking that I'd be caught up and fine to take on the work when he returned, but wound up "breaking" with one day left to go, and told the woman it was too much, and she asked if I could just hang in there with her as she was testing another MT, and would reduce the amount she gave me if this girl worked out.

Well, the doc returned from vacation and I did not get any of his work for about a week, and then the next week (this past week), I was given slightly more work than in the weeks prior to his vacation, although I had already told her it was too much, and it was still the same girl working the account with me.  At the end of the week it seemed that she had hired another girl, but did not reduce my work, just switched from girl 1 to girl 2.

Sorry so long, but here's the BIGGER problem . . . in the early part of the week, the owner e-mailed with an attached voice file, requesting that I download the voice file and listen to a blank she was trying to fill-in.  I listened (over and over) could not find her sentence, so responded with what I was hearing in and around that area.  She then gave me another location and said that she had two counters on her program and did not know which one my program used, could I listen at xxxx location, so I did, gave her the fill-in, but was a little bewildered as to why she would request my assistance in that way as SHE IS NOT PAYING ME FOR THIS KIND OF HELP.

Here we go again, yesterday she sends an e-mail with some voice files attached and some sentences with blanks, and she is requesting the same thing, that I listen and fill-in the blanks.  I am just not sure what to do here.  Early on, a couple of weeks after she returned from her vacation, she asked me if I could "proofread" the other girls files for that day as an appointment she had was "screwing her up".  I e-mailed back that, due to my heavy workload, I would not be able to EDIT work for her.  (The girl's work requires editing, not proofreading, which I quickly found out while covering the owner's vacation.)  I thought that I had let her know then that I do not work for free, in a nice way.

I would like to keep the work, but only what I am being paid for, so . . . How would you handle this situation?

How do you handle burnout as MT? Any
suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I've only been doing this for 7-1/2 years and I've about had it with all the junk.
