Going from cable to DSL will seem like slow motion at first, but it IS reliable and is never down.  They only had the slowest speed in my neighborhood when I signed up, but I went from dial-up so to me it is pretty quick. I used a friend's cable internet and I really thought it would be faster than it was.  My DSL is not much slower than her Charter cable.  She also had trouble with her cable going out many times during the week I was there.  I pay something like $29.95 a month for the DSL service, you have to sign up for a year, and if you cancel before the year is up, you get charged $200.  If you don't pay that, you lose your DSL and your phone line until you do, so you are strapped in.
