I used to swear by Sylcount but recently

to Practicount. You get the same counts as you do in Sylcount but you don't have to save the files in the rich text format for it to work. I found it annoying to have to save everything in RTF and my version of MS Word would always ask if I wanted to save it in RTF, and I'd have to answer "yes" to two different pop-ups before it would even save. There might have been a way around that, but I found Practicount worked just as well without that bother so I switched.

I just tried Sylcount and

I count by gross line and compared to MP Count, Sylcount counted a lot less lines for me! I could see where you could get a higher line count if you are counting by characters though since it offers the option of so many other keys you can include that are not technically characters but are actual keystrokes.

Just thought I would let you know what I found when I compared the two by  counting by gross lines. :)

I like Sylcount.
.
sylcount
I downloaded Sylcount (30-day trial) and followed the instructions perfectly.  The first time I used it, it went fine.  Now when i use it, i get "Could not attach or start WinWord.Files cannot be counted & reported"  What did i do wrong??
Sylcount

If I remember correctly,  it has been a while since I used it, Sylcount stores by the file name after you count them, and keeps it or is easily recounted again.   I always name the document by date and then doctor initials, i.e. 6-6-07.jlc; 6-6-07.rbf, etc.  Then when I counted by Sylcount I would count all of those files with the doctor's extension and it would give me a list and a total.  It does not produce an invoice but if I remember correctly it does give you a list from which you can easily transfer or type into an Invoice, i.e. Quick Books, and also attach the list printed so they can see the daily totals.   Right now I just use a spread sheet, foro my 7 docs, do my daily counts, keep them listed and produce an invoice and attach a copy of the spread sheet for each doctor.  Again, all my files are easily accessible and countable since I can search from the extension of their initials.

Someone one else might have a better system I am sure.   Patti

Sylcount - great
I do not know about the other two but I like Sylcount because it can be set to count extra character for caps, bolds, underlines, etc.
I tried the sylcount download too and
I did not care for them. I went with Spellex. Good program. Don't have to save files to any rtf. format, just doc. works good. They have a free trial too.
I just use Sylcount. You don't say what "reasonable" is but this is $99 and SM
has paid for itself with its invoice program.
I used Sylcount before too and it was great nm

Maybe that's it. Mine is SylCount Gold and relatively new.
nm
Are y'all meaning Sylcount?
If you need an Expander too, you can get Instant Text, which has counting, invoicing, and reporting built in. :-)
I use the invoicing report that Sylcount produces.
.
Sylcount IV lines only. You can trial for 30 days.

Hmm, I use gross lines and Sylcount is always higher
I've compared Sylcount with several different line counting programs and Sylcount was always higher, even if it was only by 10 lines. I did find that PractiCount is the same as Sylcount and I ended up switching to that since you don't have to convert files to rich text format, but other than that, I always found Sylcount to be the best.
Might be a newer version. I used Sylcount a while back
I switched to PractiCount myself because it gives a line count similar to that of Sylcount but you don't have to save the files in any special format. When I had Sylcount, though, I definitely had to save them in .rtf format or it would tell me it was not a Sylvan .rtf file and that I had to resave document in that format to count it. I remember because anytime you reopened a file, you also had to save it all over again under .rtf format because it would default to something else. Real PITA!
I could swear I had one say
The patient is tolerating her clothes.

Had the boss listen and she agreed, that's what it sounded like.
That would be me. You are very welcome. I swear by it. nm
.
Sylcount is good. It gave me a higher count
xx
I use a line counter system similar to sylcount--sm
It has an invoice feature within it. I save my daily files by patient name and whether CN, H&P, etc. If I had to run an invoice like that each month, it would be much easier to have your files by each doctor and then run the invoice feature on the line counter. It would count each patient during that month by name and list it on the invoice that way, as well as including the line count and the cost. It would be much easier than doing it by hand. Good luck to you.
Nope...I swear - s/m

Deals that big cannot, CANNOT, be done in a sneaky fashion.  It just doesn't happen.  I worked in investor relations for many years before my stint in MT and I promise you, if you read the fine print and follow shareholder's meetings and the daily stock news, you should never be surprised.

Not directed at you, but sometimes I think MTs love catastrophic thinking.  It's simply not realistic in this context.

I swear I do not change my name. Seriously.
I don't lie. If you don't want to believe anything I say in other posts, believe this. I did not change my name to Zippy or Frankie Boy or any of the other people who are responding to me!
You swear to never have another surgery sm
because you know exactly what they will be doing to you.
some swear by, but I think my hands are too big.

Voc. Rehab. let me try one out when they were helping me get my ergonomics together, and I knew right away I could never get used to it.  I have rather "fat" fingers, though, and I think that was part of it.  If you have longer, thinner fingers, it might be right up your alley.

You can rent one (which can then be applied to the purchase price, I think?) for awhile from this site to try it out, rather than outright buying it.

Are we allowed to swear? I can't believe that!
If that is the quality of the transcription they are getting back, how on earth are they passing audits with hospitals?

I just do not get it.
I swear they are skimming off us somehow.

How do you prove it though unless you are on the "inside" workings of the beast?  It's like the old Bugs Bunny where they were splitting up cash or something and the swindling character said, "One for you, one for me.  One for you, one two for me.  One for you, one two three for me...etc."

swear words in the spellchecker would be because(sm)
sometimes doing psychiatry notes (or any other for that matter) the MD will dictate exactly what the patient says.  If that quote contains swear words, the spellchecker will not pick these up unless it's been programmed that that they are spelled right.  It get's tedious having swears pop up all the time so they go into the spellchecker.
I swear, the people who manage
this site should put a button right under  'main board' that says 'MQ Gripe Board' so that the seemingly hundreds of disgruntled MQ'ers can gripe and  argue all day long and the rest of us would be spared.  Every page of this board is filled with arguments between the MQ gripers and the few MQ folks who claim they are happy.  At some point you'd think the (MQ people) would realize that non MQ'ers don't want to hear this stuff every single day, all day long.
I swear I could hug you right now. Evidently my expander
left past the letter D and I was trying to replace because I have been using it for forever!!  Thank you so, so much!!!!!!!
I swear a troll or someone just throws these Q's out to see
how close were paying attention to posts
I swear I had a neurology doctor

who would dictate into the late hours, sometimes almost hour-long dictations, and I could periodically hear the cork coming out of a bottle of wine...guess we are not the only ones that are tempted

I swear mine does a few lines... (sm)
And then sniffs all the way through the report, he is constantly changing his mind. You know how you can just tell when someone is "under the influence"? I would almost bet this account that this one gets all coked up before he picks up the phone! I have never done one of his reports where he is not trying to inhale the room in between sentences...
Yes, and I swear I've gotten viruses

from tech support screwing around.  I now have a new one, and no, I will never work on platform again or have anyone be on my computer through a meeting.  If it's not FTP work using Word, no way will I let a company mess around.

I think they do more harm than good!

I swear, I just transcribed Bill Cosby! sm
you know that voice that Bill Cosby does, kinda sounds like he's drunk?  Well, this doc I just transcribed sounded like that!!! and it's workers' comp, no less. Just had to vent a little!  It's still too early for all this!
Hurry, watch the news & I swear

You will see my last dictator dictating from a chopper with at least 10 choppers around him, landing in the middle of a Rolling Stones concert notifying the fans that Mick is sick and won't be there

just don't know how better to describe this background noise that is obviously distracting to him...oh, please add,  oops change that...uhh, hmm where was I   I have a migraine now and I don't even know what one feels like and from the looks of my que, I'm going in for round 2

Sorry I did proof my post but I swear things moved around
Sorry for the typos.
Well, my husband and I paid 58% last year in taxes. I swear! sm
I won't tell you our gross, but it's above average, we both work 70+ hours a week and we are struggling to pay our bills - parents of 3 young children.

I am scared to death of Democrats being back in office. GW at least wants tax breaks for families like ours. If the Dems are in office I'm afraid we'll be taxed more to help pay for people like my niece who had babies beginning at age 13 and has never had a job in her life. How can this NOT outrage anyone - yet I know there are people out there who tell me to get over it, it's life, those other people are 'entitled' to our money. It's absolutely vile and disgusting.
Some people swear by vitamins, calcium, low protein diet, Flexeril. (sm)
try a variety of things, cuz it could be so many things.
I am laughing so hard, I swear I fixed my 'pot' (for potassium) expander, and it came out pota

Great post. I swear by both Advantage and Frontline Plus-- both work great! - sm
I don't know about "natural" approaches for the house. I have always used flea bombs in the past before the miracle of Advantage and Frontline changed my life. Have not had a flea problem at all since I began using those products about 10 years ago, dose all the dogs religiously once a month with the Frontline Plus except in Dec.-Feb. to save a few bucks and because the ground is generally frozen by then and no fleas are scurring about. -- Hope you get flea free soon.
Your son develops a rash and a fever and you swear he has Scarlet Fever! nm

NO... Just recently.....

my sister came home to a real disaster.  She left for work at the beginning of a thunderstorm and came home to find everything blown out in her house and scorched burnt wallpaper in places on the walls.  Apparently the lightening hit the Invisible Fence wire around the perimeter of her property, traveled into the garage where the power box for the fence was, and breached her circuit box and traveled up into the sockets in the house.  She lost TVs, her computer, all sorts of items which were destroyed.  I'd unplug and wait it out.

i just recently became SE
and all i can tell you is that when i talked with my accountant about what to do with the 401k that i already have, knowing my situation, she gave no indication of there being a problem maintaining this as an SE.
I recently got one because I could not
adjust to the earphones my company sent.  I got mine from the Dictation Store and they were $9, but shipping is about $8.  I just got standard shipping and I think it took 2 days to get it, though I'm on the same coast.
I had one of those recently.
Foot pedals wouldn't work (I tried several). Keyboard keys (F1, etc.) wouldn't work. I ended up using the mouse on media player to stop, start, and back up the dictations. Obviously it takes much longer to transcribe anything that way because it's a pain in the neck to use the mouse to operate the player, and you're much more prone to make mistakes because of the clumsiness and hassle involved.

The test I took was very easy (radiology). They graded it the same as if I had had full use of a foot pedal and no technical difficulties. There were a few simple errors that were obviously the result of not being able to quickly back up and re-listen to things. They also counted off for minor stylistic "errors" even though they did not make it known anywhere that they required the use of a specific set of style guidelines on the test (presumably the BOS). I now regret taking that test at all under those ridiculous circumstances.

In the end I concluded that they either didn't know how to administer a test or it was all designed to be an ambush to stifle the MTs they had decided they didn't like and weren't about to sign a contract with. Or both. In any case, I would never choose to work with a place that incompetent or that nasty anyway.
I have done several recently and
every single one of them required you to type it into Word 2003 and email it in so that they can read it.

Maybe you were testing with bigger companies than I was, though and they have some other way to test.
Why does it seem that VR/SR has just recently taken off
it just really seems like in the last few months everyone on here has been forced to go VR (I know not ALL of you), but the majority. My work had one account on VR last year and now ALL accounts are within the just the past months. Why all of a sudden are we getting bombarded with it. It doesn't seem to matter what company or what platform, but it is taking us by storm. I happen to like VR myself, but WOW its exploding!! Want your opinion as to why "all of a sudden"?
From what I have seen recently,
they are hiring people with little or no experience and getting rid of the ones who have tons of experience and can learn quickly and can start producing at the get go. They advertise for experienced MTs with acute care experience but they are not keeping them.  They even laugh and joke about it.
I have investigated recently-
checking up the corporate ladder and with tech people, all of us in MQ get paid for spaces within a section/paragraph, naturally not the blank line between sections/paragraphs. That was one of the motives for insisting we stop double spaces after periods and colons(:). It adds up.
I've seen the same recently...

"work pools were changed recently" was what I was told and now finding myself with the accents....luckily since I work on 85% during my full time job during the day the accents on this part time account are a piece of cake.  I did have a funny experience last night on my last report...

I pulled in an echo that someone apparently abandoned because they couldn't do it.  It was an ESL but not a difficult ESL.....

The doctor dictated....."Normal mitral valve........NO MORE MITRAL VALVE was transcribed....then pericardial effusion.....THE PATIENT WANTS DIVERSION was typed.....  !

I was just recently hired by
Transcend and am receiving the equipment today or tomorrow, will train next week. I would not worry about the interview if I were you.  She was very nice and we had a nice talk.  I am leaving MQ.  Welcome.
I checked it out recently (sm)
If I weren't already in my senior year of college and on a different path, I'd definitely check it out. The average income was something like 45K (salary.com).

I'd not worry about competition. MT is considered hard for newbies to break into, but we did that, didn't we? Where there's a will, there's a way.

I'd definitely consider it if I were you. Frankly, getting out of the house sounds really nice to me.
I think there was something recently posted about this
company.
